Now in this episode, I want to answer a question

from a student of mine.

She's from Japan.

And her name is Fumiko.

Fumiko asked, which sentence is correct?

A girl whom I met knew your family well or a girl who I met

knew your family well.

So the question is whom or who?

Which is correct?

And she says, one website I saw said that whom is correct.

But another website I saw said that who is correct.

So what's the deal?

Which one is really correct?

Let me help you.

I can tell you 100% that whom is correct.

However, nobody talks like that.

So if you are taking a grammar test,

if you're taking the TOEFL, the IELTS,

if you're taking your teacher's grammar test,

please use whom for direct objects like this.

However, if you are speaking, if you are having a conversation,

if you want to sound natural like a fluent, native English

speaker, then don't use whom.

It's too formal.

It's extremely formal.

Nobody uses it anymore unless they're

trying to sound really formal.

So if you want to sound nativelike, normal, natural,

in everyday conversation, I can tell you 100%

that you can use who.

And no one's going to think, oh my gosh,

her English is incorrect.

She's not using the proper form.

This is a point in the English language

that I feel is changing to become a bit more casual

in everyday use.

And I'm not feeling it.

I know it 100%.

It's OK to say who.

So a girl who I know-- a girl who I met

knew your family very well.

So to explain with the same example, you can use who.

And it's totally OK.

That's what you're going to hear people saying

in everyday conversation.

Now I'm not saying it's grammatically correct.

But I am telling you that it's OK.

Relax.

Use English as other native and fluent English speakers use it.

And you'll sound more relaxed, more casual, more

like you're used to using English

in everyday conversation.
