The 2 Things You Need to Do Now to Become Fluent in English | Go Natural English

How are you?

You know, the top question that I get as an English teacher is, "How can I become fluent

in English?

This is what we all want to know, is how do we reach that goal of fluency in conversational

English?"

Well, what I noticed from my experience over 10 years teaching English at university, at

a corporation, and at various different language schools, and then finally on my own, in my

own company, Go Natural English, is that when you learn English in a traditional classroom,

with a traditional textbook, there's something missing.

There is something really big missing.

You might learn grammar.

You might learn some vocabulary.

But when you go to speak with English speakers in the real world, or when you go to watch

a movie, or listen to the news, there's something missing.

You just can't understand everything the way that natives say it.

So, what I am doing with Go Natural English for you is bridging that gap between the traditional

classroom and real English the way that we speak naturally in everyday conversations.

So, what's missing from the traditional English classroom, from the textbooks, are the words

and the phrases that we use in modern-day conversations.

I mean, I don't know when your textbook was made -- it could be more recent, it could

be older... but when teachers create textbooks, when they create classes, it's an academic

setting.

So you're learning for university, or for writing an essay, or for speaking to your

professor.

But if you want to do things like speak with colleagues, or speak with friends, or maybe

in a social setting, you need different ways of speaking.

You need different phrases, different words.

The way that we speak English naturally is quite different from the way that you may

have learned in your high school English class.

So, I'm here to help you!

Some of the things that we do at Go Natural English are to explore and to really learn

things like phrasal verbs, because these are the phrases that native speakers use ninety

percent of the time.

Instead of saying "to enter work" -- "What time do you enter work?"

-- I would say, "What time do you get to work?"

Right?

Or there's a ton of phrasal verbs.

I have a lot of different videos on phrasal verbs like "get" as a preposition, how we

use it as a native speaker and how you can use it, too.

There's a lot of phrasal verbs out there.

So, that's one thing that, in the new course, Fluent Communication, we spend a lot of time

on because, really, phrasal verbs are one of the keys to becoming a confident and fluent

English speaker.

Also, conversational phrases, idioms, slang that we use, that we use in all different

settings -- slang is not just for kids, it's not just for teenagers, but adults of all

ages use different vocabulary words, different slang because it's fun, because these words

evolve out of popular culture.

And so, you have to know something about slang and about American popular culture to be an

excellent communicator with people who speak English, whether they're from North America

or from other countries.

If you want to keep your English modern and current so that you can understand movies,

the news, and conversation, you have to know the words and phrases that people use outside

of the classroom.

So, this is what I notice, is that in the classroom you learn classroom English.

So if you want to be an English teacher, or if you want to do well in your English classes,

or maybe on an English test, well, that's good for you.

But if you want to be able to understand native speakers, have conversations, be confident,

speak without hesitation, these are the skills that we give you at Go Natural English.

So, you need the words and phrases to keep your English modern.

It's sort of like if you have an app on your phone, sometimes you need to upgrade it because

there's new versions available.

And even learning languages, like learning English, is like that.

You have to update your English vocabulary every once and a while.

Imagine if we still talked like in the 1800's... right?

-- when people used completely different vocabulary, spoke in a different, even a different accent,

right?

So, imagine if we still spoke like that!

In some ways, when I hear non-native English speakers speaking English, they're using terms,

they're using words, vocabulary, even grammar that native speakers just don't use anymore.

So, I'm here to help you with that.

Just to summarize, there's two things that I said today in this video that will really

help you to become fluent in English.

One is to develop the right word choice.

You don't need to know all the English words in the world.

That's probably impossible.

You need to know the right English words -- how, when, where and with whom to use them.

So, word choice: learning those modern-day phrases that we use in the real world.

And two: develop your confidence through using the strategies that we use at Go Natural English,

strategies like copying and pasting what you hear, just like on the computer.

Strategies like shadowing what you hear; repeating.

Strategies like imagining yourself having a conversation, maybe thinking in English

and how to develop your thinking skills in English, as opposed to in your first language.

So actually, thinking through your plans, through your day, even dreaming in English,

how to do that!

And also how to use strategies like recording yourself, reflecting, free writing and getting

feedback from Go Natural English teachers.

Those are some of the ways that you can reach fluency in English.
