Need to know about if you are going to be speaking English out there in the real world

Hi guys, it's me Hale and did you know that there are over?

160 recognized dialects of the English language. Yes

160 that's a lot

That's so many that you can't be expected to understand and speak all

160 dialects and even native English speakers like me we can't always

understand every dialect in every accent in the English language

for instance

I find the Scottish accent to be somewhat difficult to understand and

Other people might find my accent difficult to understand

now if you're going to travel to the United States

there is a standard American accent and

it's something like what I'm speaking now, and if you've heard Gabby and her videos, that's a standard American accent, but

Did you know that there are also many regional accents and dialects in the United States in this video?

We are going to visit four of the most common

Accent in American English that you might encounter if you're traveling around the United States

it is the southern accent the New England accent the New York City accent and

the Midwestern accent so as we look at these four different accents remember

These are general regional accents even within each region or area of the United States

There might even be smaller accents for instance the New York City accent

You can even get smaller. You can break that down into a Brooklyn accent a Queens accent a Bronx accent

You can go very very local with these. So this video we're just doing a generalized regional accent

Overview so let's get started

So the southern accent is my personal favorite because I am from the South I was born in Virginia

And so the southern area of the United States is the states from Virginia, North Carolina

South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi

Tennessee

Even northern Florida is considered the south

and again

So the regional accent of this is really you can recognize it by these drawn-out vowels

So let's look at some examples from popular culture. Here are some clips to look at

Next up let's look at the New England accent. So this accent is used around that the states

Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire

Maine the areas that make up the the area of the United States called New England

Which is one of the first Sutton settlements from England now the most famous

Of the New England accents is the Boston accent and you see that a lot in films and on TV

So let's look at some clips where we're going to have the Boston accent and a more general New England accent

One thing to remember is that the New York City accent it can even be more

Distinctive than the entire city you can get down to accents from the different neighborhoods

You can have a Brooklyn accent a Queens accent a Staten Island accent

So here we're just looking at a general. Look at a New York accent

It's impossible it'll never happen. So why whole crazy think about someone

so the Midwest of the United States is kind of in the middle of the country to the north up near Canada, so

Wisconsin and Minnesota are the two big states that are known for this specific accent

And so let's take a look at some movies that have a really pronounced

Midwestern accent

Do you think that most people would say the teenage beauty pageants are a good idea? Oh, yeah. Sure

Bra wear and hairy-legged women livers might say they might say that a pageant is old-fashioned and demeaning to the girls

So there you have four typical accents of the United States

the southern accent the New England accent the New York City accent and the Midwestern accent

So if you're ever traveling in the United States and you go through those areas you're now going to be more prepared
