in this blogcast we are going to discuss

how fluency is a lot like a beauty

it is in the eye of the be holder

I'm also bring to give you

the first step that you need to take

in order to get fluent english

so guys I would thinking today

about how I made a mistake in english

I would teaching in english class

and talking about different phases

that you can use to make suggestion or recommendation

or even to invite people to do something

like ahh how about going to lunch that one example

so I was telling my students this time

we are not going to say I suggest or I recommence

we are going to use other phases

so I said don't say I suggest to go to lunch

or I recommence to go to lunch

umm I suppose is not in correct

but what I would commentary here or say

is I suggest going to lunch or I suggest

ohh sorry I recommence going to lunch

ahh so usually I would use the ing form of the second verb

it's minor detail but you can use both

I just was thinking that you know the more time I spend in different countries

like right now in Japan

and I live in travel in different country around the world Brazil, Dominican Republic

ahh and I 've been in Japan for few years on and off

umm of course I live in the US this well

but the more I travel and the more I spend time with international friends and students

I speak a source of well english both

because I become a product of the people around me

I try to emphasize and emulate them

and I also what to be clear to my students

so I end up speaking more clearly

I end up speaking in words that they won't understand

because there are high fluency words of word that my might have in a textbook

and so I was thinking today is that wrong

should I continue to speak in a away that more native like

even means people won't understand me

so what I think the right answer is

you have to ask yourself for questions

and this is the first step to really become in fluent in english

do you have to ask yourself do you want to speak world english

or do you want to speak american english

or native english

or do you want to be able to function at a high level

maybe a aprofessional or academic level

in english in the United State

or in another english speaking country

because if you want to functional a high level

you want to have native english

if you want to be able to speak with international friends

and do international business you need world english

that is a different right

world english is not concern as much with grammar

or with using really umm fancy vocabulary

we want to use for world english

we want to use what we use we call high frequency vocabulary

vocabulary that we use a lot in english

because those of the words that other english learners will know and you got it

I don't know you realize more

but there are more non english speaker in the world than native english speaker

so if you want to be able to communicate with more people

then we should be learning world english

world english is about learning a lot of vocabulary

world english is about being able to understand of variety of accent

and make yourself clear to people

who are from a variety of background

that 's what I speak very clearly

because I want to be understood

by people from different background

or different languages

so when we learn of world english

we want to focus on high frequency words

like verb like ,have, be, do, go, make, want

it's very elementary verb

but we want to know them and use them often

also we wanna learn a lot of vocabulary

like places, things ,daily activities

really common words that going to need a daily basic to express

what you have,what you are, what you do,where you go,what you make and what you want

so you have to ask yourself what is your goal

for example if you want to be a train conductor

and you are working on the train

where you need to speak english

well for your purpose

all you need to say to be fluent in english is to give please

and I got that example for my friend Tony March

he gave example

because it'show in order to be a successful train conductor in english

you only need 2 words

right well yeah what else someone ask you a question in english

it will help to more than 2 words

but the point is you have to first ask yourself

what is your purpose for learning english

if your purpose is to be a train conductor

you need a specific vocabulary

and I believe in that 100% that you need to learn english that is specific to your purpose

if you want to be able to make friends when you travel around the world

then you should learn a variety of conversational english word

you should be able to talk

about travel and culture and languages and may be current advance

but if you want to be a diplomatic you are going to need to learn a specific that vocabulary

if you want to be a medical translator

that's very specific that vocabulary that you need to learn

I like to share my example because I'm pretty fluent in Spanish

I taught Spanish for over 3 years

and a lot of people think when they hear me speak

ohh you are fluent Spanish speaker

I thought for a while about becoming a medical translator from spanish to english

I had even volunteer as a medical translator for a fews years

so when I apply to be in an official pay the medical translator

I thought I got it

I took the test and I'm embarrass to say I failed

you know why I failed

I didn't have the very very specific vocabulary

like words for certain organ or word for certain only is

that I need it in order to pass that test

so it is all about your goal

and it's all about studying the words

and the expression that you need to reach your goal

all right so that the first step to fluency

even befor you start learning

any english grammar or vocabulary

I want you to ask yourself what is my goal

It might goal to go to the university in the United State

may be to do a MBA program

ahh a business program that is a master of business administration in the US

or do I just want to use english to travel

do I want to use english to make new friends to connect with people

to have rich conversation

and have people understand when I'm saying

or maybe is both and that ok then you know you need the vocabulary and the grammar to do both

so again fluency is in the eye the be holder

just as we say beauty an the eye the be holder

that means that

what I think is a beautiful my bite different that use it,it's beautiful

may be you see a person you say wow she is beautiful

but I think ohh I don't know

or maybe I say wow that man is beautiful

you say umm really are you sure

well that was fluency is right

I maybe fluent enough in Spanish

to have a great conversation

but I'm not fluent in Spanish to be medical translator

so may fluency in Spanish is in the eye of the be holder

or depend on the situation

ok so ask yourself that question

why do I want to be fluency in english

what is my goal
