This is a very common mistake I hear many, many students making.

And this, in case you're wondering, is the past tense of "meet".

So let's get started.

So I have here four sentences.

ここに4つの文があります。

"I knew Chelsea last week."

"I knew Chelsea last week." (先週、チェルシーを知った)

And "knew" is the past of "know".

"knew" は"know"の過去形です。

"I met Chelsea last week."

"I met Chelsea last week." (先週、チェルシーに会った)

"Met" is the past of "meet".

"Met"は"meet"の過去形です。

"I met with Chelsea last week."

"I met with Chelsea last week." (先週、チェルシーに会った)

and: "I met up with Chelsea last week."

最後は、"I met up with Chelsea last week." (先週、チェルシーと会った)

Do you know what the difference between these sentences are?

この４つの文章の違いがわかりますか？

Are there any ones that have a mistake in them or all these all good sentences?

この中に間違っている文章はありますか、 それともすべて正しいですか。

Okay, so take a moment and think about it.

Okay.

So, let's first look at the difference between these two:

まずはこの2つから 違いを見てみましょう。

"I knew Chelsea last week." and "I met Chelsea last week."

"I knew Chelsea last week."と "I met Chelsea last week."です。

So I have here some pictures.

So, let's get started over here.

We have "meet", which is now and the past, which is "met".

ここに現在形の"meet"と 過去形の"met"があります。

I have here two people.

ここに二人います。

These people do not know each other.

この人たちは お互いを知りません。

It's the first time that they are talking.

初めて話をする 二人です。

Okay? They don't know each other.

今までは会ったことが ありません。

So what do they say?

何と言っているでしょうか。

They say: "Nice to meet you!"

この人は "Nice to meet you!"と言ってます。

We use "meet" when we're meeting somebody for the first time.

"meet"は誰かと初めて会うときに 使います。

We use "meet" with strangers.

初めての出会いで使います。

Okay?

So these guys, they don't know each other and now they are meeting for the first time.

この二人はお互いを知らず 初めて出会ったところです。

Okay, so these two, we could say: "They met last week."

この場合、二人について"They met last week (先週出会った)."と言えます。

Meaning: The first time they shook hands:

初めて出会い、お互いに 握手を交わしたということです。

"Hi. Nice to meet you." was last week.

"Hi. Nice to meet you”という やりとりを、先週しました。

Now, compare this to "know" or "knew", which again, is the past tense.

これと、"know"または過去形の "knew"を比べてみましょう。

We have here two friends.

ここに友達同士の二人がいます。

Okay?

We can call them David and Ken.

仮に、デビッドとケンとしましょう。

They're friends forever.

昔からの親友で

Okay? They've been friends for a very long time.

ずっと以前に 知り合った二人です。

In this case they know each other.

この場合、"They know each other. (お互いを知ってる)"訳です。

They have history.

知り合ってから長く

It's not they're meeting for the first time.

初めての出会いでは ありません。

No. They met a long time ago.

ずっと以前からの知り合いで

So if there's history between two people, they know each other.

友達同士として 付き合ってきました。

If there is no history between two people and, you know, it's their first time shaking

二人の間に付き合いがなければ 今回が初めての出会いで

hands, saying: "Nice to meet you", they meet each other.

"Nice to meet you"と言う間柄なら 「they "meet" each other」です。

Okay? So this one we would never say...

これは実際に使うことのない…

This is a mistake I hear a lot.

でもよく耳にする間違いで

A lot of people say:

多くの人が口にします。

"Oh. It's nice to know you."

"Oh. It's nice to know you."

We don't say that.

このようには言いません。

Okay? Because "know" means you met the person a long time ago and you've...

つまり"know"を使うなら 相手とは以前に知り合っていること

You know, you have a history together.

お互いを知っている 必要があります。

For this, this is the first time, we would use "meet" not "know".

これが初めて会うのなら "know"ではなく"meet"を使います。

Okay?

So another thing I wanted to say on this is a lot of the times you want to...

"know"に関して もう一つ

You know, you want to talk about how long has somebody been friends with somebody or

知り合ってどれぐらいになるか、

how long has somebody had this person for their teacher.

この先生と知り合ってどれぐらい、 といった質問があります。

So the...

この場合

What we usually use is the present perfect, so we often say how long we've known someone.

通常現在完了形を使って、 "how long we've known someone."と言います。

Okay? So "known" is the past participle of "know".

"known" は"know"の 過去分詞形です。

So what you can say if somebody says:

誰かに次のように聞かれたら…

-"Oh. How long have you known your husband for?"

"Oh. How long have you known your husband for?" (旦那さんと知り合ってどれぐらい？)

-"I've known my husband for 10 years."

"I've known my husband for 10 years” (知り合って10年になります)

-"How long has Dave known Ken for?"

-"How long has Dave known Ken for?" (デイブとケンは知り合ってどのぐらい？)

-"Dave has known Ken for five years."

-"Dave has known Ken for five years." (知り合って5年になります)

Okay? So, again, this is asking about: How long is your history?

付き合いの長さを尋ねる質問です。

How long have you known each other for?

"How long have you known each other for?" (お互い知り合ってどれぐらいですか)

Again, this is key English.

これは重要な表現です。

It comes up a lot in conversation.

頻繁に会話に出てきます。

When you meet somebody, you know, and there's like a couple, you often say:

誰かと出会ったとしましょう。 その人がカップルなら、

"Oh. How long have you known Bob for?

"Oh. How long have you known Bob for?” (ボブと知り合ってどれぐらいですか)

How long have you known Jennifer for?" Okay?

How long have you known Jennifer for?"

So now let's look at some of the differences with "met", or, sorry.

では、"Meet", "meet with", "meet up with"の

"Meet", "meet with", and "meet up with".

の違いを見てみましょう。

Okay, so quick question to you.

まず一つ質問をします。

We've just gone over the difference between "know" and "met".

ここまで、"know"と"meet"の 違いを見てきました。

For these two: "I knew Chelsea last week.", "I met Chelsea last week."

この"I knew Chelsea last week"と "I met Chelsea last week."

which one do you think is correct?

正しいのはどちらでしょう。

Well, if you said number two: "I met Chelsea last week."

2番目が正しいと答えた方： "I met Chelsea last week."

that's right. Oh, okay.

正解です。

"I met Chelsea last week."

"I met Chelsea last week."

This one is correct, because usually you know somebody for a long time and we usually don't

つまり、すでに知り合いである 人に対して、通常"knew"は

use "knew" because it makes it sound like the person has died or that you don't know

使いません。「知っていた」だと 相手がすでに亡くなっているか

them anymore.

もう今は知らないように聞こえます。

So we usually use "know" or we use "have known".

だから"know"か"have known"を 使います。

We don't use "knew" a lot.

"knew""はめったに使いません。

So, what you could say is: "I have known Chelsea since last week."

"I have known Chelsea since last week."なら 問題ありません。

But if you're talking about, like, meeting first time, we would use "met".

でも初めて会ったことを 伝えるなら"met"を使います。

"I met Chelsea last week."

"I met Chelsea last week."

Means: -"Nice to meet you, Chelsea."

"Nice to meet you, Chelsea." (初めまして、チェルシー)

-"Nice to meet you, too."

-"Nice to meet you, too." (こちらこそ)

Okay? So in general what you're looking for is "met" for a first time meeting.

初めての出会いには "met"を使いましょう。

Now let's look at these other sentences and how we use them.

では他の文章の意味、使い方を 見ていきましょう。

Okay, so we've talked about "know" meaning you have a history with somebody, and we talked

すでに知り合いである場合の "know"、そして

about "meet" meaning for the first time.

初めての出会いの"meet"について 説明しました。

Now, what's the difference between: "meet", "meet with", and "meet up with"?

次はmeet", "meet with"、そして "meet up with"の違いです。

Let's look at that now.

So, I told you before "meet" has to do with strangers meeting for the first time, or maybe

"meet"は初めて会う人同士、 または何度か会ったけれど

they met a couple times but they don't know each other well.

あまりよく知らない人たちに 関わる言葉です。

Each time they see each other:

会うたびにこのように挨拶します。

"Oh. It's nice to meet you."

"Oh. It's nice to meet you." (初めまして)

So, for example...

例をあげてみます。

This isn't true, but just for this example: "I met Taylor Swift twice."

たとえ話として聞いてください。 "I met Taylor Swift twice.(テイラー スウィフトに２度会った)"

This means Taylor Swift has no idea who I am.

つまりテイラー スウィフトは 私のことを知りません。

Or maybe, you know, just at that meeting we say:

初めて会ったその場では 簡単な挨拶程度するかもしれません。

-"Hi. Nice to meet you.

-"Hi. Nice to meet you. (初めまして)

My name's Emma. What's your name?"

My name's Emma.(エマです) What's your name?"(お名前は？)

-"Oh, I'm Taylor Swift."

-"Oh, I'm Taylor Swift."(テイラー スウィフトよ)

And then we see each other maybe a couple years later:

その後、数年後に再び会う機会が あったとします。

"Oh. It's nice to meet you again."

"Oh. It's nice to meet you agai." (またお会いしましたね)

But we don't know each other.

お互いを知りません。

Okay?

We don't have history together.

まったく付き合いがありません。

We've only met two times.

本当に２度会った、だけなのです。

Now, compare this to: "meet with".

今度は"meet with”と 比べてみましょう。

"Meet with" is when we're talking about usually a business situation or some sort of formal

"Meet with"という言葉は、通常 ビジネスの場や少し改まった状況、

situation where we're talking about some sort of serious matter.

つまり真剣な話をする場所で 使います。

Okay? So, for example: "I met with my professor today."

たとえば、"I met with my professor today" (今日、教授と会いました)、とか

Or: "Tomorrow I will meet with my boss to talk about our company.",

"Tomorrow I will meet with my boss to talk about our company."(明日上司と会社のことを話し合う),

"Today I had a job interview. I met with some people about the job."

"Today I had a job interview. I met with some people about the job."(面接で仕事関係者と会った)

So we're usually talking about formal situations when we use "meet with", or again, this is

通常"meet with”は改まった状況を説明するときに 使います。こちらは

the past: "met with".

過去形の"met with"ですが。

Okay?

So notice there is no "with" here, because it's the first time.

ここには "with"はありません。 そして初回のことです。

Here, there is "with", and it just indicates a formal meeting.

ここには"with"があり、改まった 会合を表しています。

And for this one, you know, it doesn't have to be the first time.

これに関しては、初回だとは 限りません。

Maybe you've met with your boss a hundred times before, so it can...

上司とは数えきれないほど 会っているかもしれません。

It has a different meaning than this.

こちらとは違う意味を持ちます。

Okay, the next one: "meet up with".

次は"meet up with"です。

So, "meet up with" is another way to say hang out or do something social with people.

"meet up with"は"hang out(一緒に過ごす)や 社交的な付き合いを表します。

It's fun or it should be fun.

だいたいは楽しいことです。

Okay?

So usually it's with friends, it can be with other people, too.

友達だったり、他の人だったり するかもしれません。

But when you meet up with somebody it's not a business meeting, it's not formal.

ただし、誰かと"meet up with"する場合 仕事や改まった状況ではありません。

It's you're meeting for fun.

何か楽しい集まりです。

So, for example: "I met up with my friends tonight."

例としては"I met up with my friend tonight."(今夜、友達と会った(遊んだ))

So, this is why people get really confused by these things because when we just have

"meet" with no prepositions after, it indicates a first or second meeting where you don't

For "meet with" it indicates some sort of formal situation, whereas "meet up with" is

It's pretty much saying: "I'm hanging out with somebody.

"I'm hanging out with somebody.” (誰かと楽しく過ごす)とほぼ同じです。

I met up with my friends tonight.

I met up with my friends tonight.

I'm hanging out with my friends tonight."

I'm hanging out with my friends tonight."

Okay? So, we've covered a lot in this video.

We've covered the difference between "know" and "met".

Remember "know" is you have a history with someone, "meet" is, you know, you're pretty

"know"は誰かと付き合いが あることを示し、"meet"はほぼ

So this is a lot of different concepts and different vocabulary to remember.
