This is a very common mistake I hear many, many students making.

And this, in case you're wondering, is the past tense of "meet".

So I have here four sentences.

"I knew Chelsea last week."

"I knew Chelsea last week."

And "knew" is the past of "know".

"knew"는 "know"의 과거형입니다.

"I met Chelsea last week."

"I met Chelsea last week."

"Met" is the past of "meet".

"Met"은 "meet"의 과거형입니다.

"I met with Chelsea last week."

"I met with Chelsea last week."

and: "I met up with Chelsea last week."

그리고 "I met up with Chelsea last week."

Do you know what the difference between these sentences are?

Are there any ones that have a mistake in them or all these all good sentences?

Okay, so take a moment and think about it.

So, let's first look at the difference between these two:

먼저 "I knew Chelsea last week."와 "I met Chelsea last week."의 차이에 대해서 살펴봅시다.

"I knew Chelsea last week." and "I met Chelsea last week."

So I have here some pictures.

여기 그림을 그려봤습니다.

Pictures can really help you remember things, and they can really, you know, help make a point...

그림은 여러분이 잘 기억할 수 있도록 도와줘요.

A stronger point.

So, let's get started over here.

여기서부터 시작해봅시다.

We have "meet", which is now and the past, which is "met".

여기에 현재를 나타내는 "meet"가 있고, 과거를 나타내는 "met"가 있습니다.

I have here two people.

그리고 여기에 두 사람이 있습니다.

These people do not know each other.

이 사람들은 서로를 모릅니다.

It's the first time that they are talking.

그들이 대화하는 것은 처음입니다.

Okay? They don't know each other.

알겠나요? 그들은 서로를 알지 못합니다.

So what do they say?

그들은 뭐라고 말할까요?

They say: "Nice to meet you!"

그들은 "Nice to meet you!"라고 말할 것입니다.

We use "meet" when we're meeting somebody for the first time.

우리는 "meet"를 어떤 사람을 처음 만날 때 사용합니다.

We use "meet" with strangers.

우리는 "meet"를 낯선 사람에게 사용하죠.

Okay?

So these guys, they don't know each other and now they are meeting for the first time.

그래서 이 사람들은, 서로를 모르고, 지금 처음 만났습니다.

Okay, so these two, we could say: "They met last week."

그래서 이 두 사람을 우리는 "They met last week."라고 하죠.

Meaning: The first time they shook hands:

그들이 악수를 처음한 날을 의미하죠.

"Hi. Nice to meet you." was last week.

"Hi. Nice to meet you."는 지난주에 했습니다.

Now, compare this to "know" or "knew", which again, is the past tense.

그렇다면 meet를 "know"나 과거형인 "knew"를 비교해봅시다.

We have here two friends.

여기에 두 친구가 있습니다.

Okay?

We can call them David and Ken.

David 와 Ken이라고 부릅시다.

They're friends forever.

그들은 영원한 친구에요.

Okay? They've been friends for a very long time.

그들은 아주 오랫동안 친구였어요.

In this case they know each other.

지금 이 상황은 그들은 서로를 알아요(know).

They have history.

그들은 내력(과거)이 있어요.

It's not they're meeting for the first time.

그들은 처음 만난게 아니에요.

No. They met a long time ago.

그들은 아주 오래 전에 만났죠(met).

So if there's history between two people, they know each other.

그래서 두 사람 사이에 과거가 있다면, 그들은 서로를 알아요(know).

If there is no history between two people and, you know, it's their first time shaking

두 사람 사이에 과거가 없다면, 그러니까, 그들이 처음 악수를 한 날이라면,

hands, saying: "Nice to meet you", they meet each other.

"Nice to meet you"라고 말하며 서로를 만나겠죠(meet).

Okay? So this one we would never say...

This is a mistake I hear a lot.

실수하는 것을 많이 들었어요.

A lot of people say:

많은 사람들이

"Oh. It's nice to know you."

"Oh. It's nice to know you."라고 말해요.

We don't say that.

그렇게 말하면 안됩니다.

Okay? Because "know" means you met the person a long time ago and you've...

왜냐하면 "know"는 그 사람을 오래전에 만나서

You know, you have a history together.

과거가 있다는 것을 의미해요.

For this, this is the first time, we would use "meet" not "know".

이것은 처음 만난 경우니까, 우리는 "know"가 아니라 "meet"를 사용해요.

Okay?

So another thing I wanted to say on this is a lot of the times you want to...

You know, you want to talk about how long has somebody been friends with somebody or

여러분들이 어떤 사람이 누군가와 친구로 지낸지 얼마나 됐는지 물어보고 싶거나

how long has somebody had this person for their teacher.

어떤 사람이 누군가를 선생님으로 받아들인지 얼마나 됐는지 물어보고 싶을 거예요.

So the...

What we usually use is the present perfect, so we often say how long we've known someone.

그래서 보통 현재 완료를 사용해서, 'how long we've known someone'이라고 말해요.

Okay? So "known" is the past participle of "know".

“Known"는 "know"의 과거형이에요.

So what you can say if somebody says:

그러면 어떤 사람이

-"Oh. How long have you known your husband for?"

"Oh. How long have you known your husband for?(남편을 얼마나 오래 알고 지냈어?)"라고 하면

-"I've known my husband for 10 years."

“I've known my husband for 10 years."라고 대답하고,

-"How long has Dave known Ken for?"

-"How long has Dave known Ken for?(Dave가 Ken을 얼마나 오래 알고 지냈어?)"라고 하면

-"Dave has known Ken for five years."

-"Dave has known Ken for five years."라고 하는 것이죠.

Okay? So, again, this is asking about: How long is your history?

알겠나요? 즉, 이것은 관계가 얼마나 되었는지 물어보는 거예요.

How long have you known each other for?

서로를 얼마나 알고 지냈는지 물어보는 거죠.

Again, this is key English.

다시, 정말 중요한 표현입니다.

It comes up a lot in conversation.

일상 대화에서 자주 쓰입니다.

When you meet somebody, you know, and there's like a couple, you often say:

여러분이 누구를 만난다면, 그리고 거기에 커플이 있다면 여러분은 이렇게 자주 말하죠.

"Oh. How long have you known Bob for?

"Oh. How long have you known Bob for?(Bob을 얼마나 오래 알고 지냈나요?)"

How long have you known Jennifer for?" Okay?

"How long have you known Jennifer for?(Jennifer를 얼마나 오래 알고 지냈나요?)" 알겠나요?

So now let's look at some of the differences with "met", or, sorry.

그러면 지금부터는 "met”과.. 아 죄송합니다.

"Meet", "meet with", and "meet up with".

“Meet", "meet with" 그리고 ”meet up with"의 차이를 비교해봅시다.

Okay, so quick question to you.

좋아요, 간단한 질문 하나 해보겠습니다.

We've just gone over the difference between "know" and "met".

우리는 방금 “know"와 ”met“의 차이점에 대해서 배웠죠.

For these two: "I knew Chelsea last week.", "I met Chelsea last week."

그렇다면 ”I knew Chelsea last week.",와 “I met Chelsea last week." 중

which one do you think is correct?

어떤 게 맞는 문장일까요?

Well, if you said number two: "I met Chelsea last week."

만약에 2번 째 문장 ”I met Chelsea last week."이 맞다고 하셨다면,

that's right. Oh, okay.

정답입니다.

"I met Chelsea last week."

“I met Chelsea last week."가 맞습니다,

This one is correct, because usually you know somebody for a long time and we usually don't

왜냐하면 보통 우리가 사람을 알 때 오랜 기간 알고,

"knew"는 그 사람이 죽은 것처럼 들리고, 그 사람을 더 이상 모르는 것처럼 들리기 때문에 잘 사용하지 않아요.

use "knew" because it makes it sound like the person has died or that you don't know

them anymore.

So we usually use "know" or we use "have known".

그래서 보통 ”know(안다)"나 “have known(알고 있다)"를 사용하죠.

We don't use "knew" a lot.

우리는 "knew(알았다)"를 잘 사용하지 않아요.

So, what you could say is: "I have known Chelsea since last week."

그래서 여러분이 할 수 있는 말은 "I have known Chelsea since last week.(저번주부터 나는 Chelsea를 알고 있어.)"이죠.

But if you're talking about, like, meeting first time, we would use "met".

하지만 만약에 여러분이 처음 만난 것에 대해서 말한다면, "met(만났다)"를 사용해요.

"I met Chelsea last week."

"I met Chelsea last week.(지난주에 Chelsea를 만났다.)"는

Means: -"Nice to meet you, Chelsea."

"Nice to meet you, Chelsea.(만나서 반가워 Chelsea.)"를 의미하죠.

-"Nice to meet you, too."

-"Nice to meet you, too.(나도 만나서 반가워.)"

Okay? So in general what you're looking for is "met" for a first time meeting.

알겠나요? 그래서 일반적으로 처음 만났을 때는 "met"을 사용합니다.

Now let's look at these other sentences and how we use them.

그렇다면 이제 이 다른 문장들을 어떻게 사용하는지 배워봅시다.

Okay, so we've talked about "know" meaning you have a history with somebody, and we talked

좋아요, 우리는 지금까지 어떤 사람과 과거가 있다는 것을 의미하는 "know"와

about "meet" meaning for the first time.

처음 만난 것을 의미하는 "meet"에 대해서 얘기해봤습니다.

Now, what's the difference between: "meet", "meet with", and "meet up with"?

그렇다면, "meet", "meet with", 그리고 "meet up with"는 어떤 것이 다를까요?

Let's look at that now.

So, I told you before "meet" has to do with strangers meeting for the first time, or maybe

they met a couple times but they don't know each other well.

Each time they see each other:

So, for example...

This isn't true, but just for this example: "I met Taylor Swift twice."

This means Taylor Swift has no idea who I am.

Or maybe, you know, just at that meeting we say:

-"Hi. Nice to meet you.

My name's Emma. What's your name?"

And then we see each other maybe a couple years later:

"Oh. It's nice to meet you again."

"Oh. It's nice to meet you again.(다시 만나뵙게 되어서 반갑습니다.)"라고 말한 경우에 사용할 수 있겠죠.

But we don't know each other.

하지만 저희는 서로에 대해서 모르는 거죠.

Okay?

We don't have history together.

저희는 과거를 가지고 있지 않고,

We've only met two times.

저희는 고작 두 번 만났습니다.

Now, compare this to: "meet with".

그렇다면 이것을 "meet with."와 비교해봅시다.

"Meet with" is when we're talking about usually a business situation or some sort of formal

"Meet with"는 보통 업무 상황이나

중요한 문제를 다루는 공식적인 상황을 말할 때 사용해요.

situation where we're talking about some sort of serious matter.

Okay? So, for example: "I met with my professor today."

예를 들어, "I met with my professor today.(나는 오늘 교수님을 만나 뵀어.)"

Or: "Tomorrow I will meet with my boss to talk about our company.",

아니면, "Tomorrow I will meet with my boss to talk about our company.(내일 나는 상사에게 우리 회사에 대해 얘기하러 찾아 뵐 거야.)"

"Today I had a job interview. I met with some people about the job."

"Today I had a job interview. I met with some people about the job.(오늘 직업 인터뷰가 있었어. 나는 직업과 관련있는 사람들을 찾아 뵀어.)"

So we're usually talking about formal situations when we use "meet with", or again, this is

the past: "met with".

Okay?

So notice there is no "with" here, because it's the first time.

Here, there is "with", and it just indicates a formal meeting.

여기는 격식을 표현해주는 "with"가 있다는 것을 인지하시기 바랍니다.

And for this one, you know, it doesn't have to be the first time.

이 경우에는, 꼭 처음이 아니여도 됩니다.

Maybe you've met with your boss a hundred times before, so it can...

여러분이 여러분의 상사를 수백번 봤을 수도 있고...

It has a different meaning than this.

그래서 meet with는 이것(stranger)과는 다릅니다.

Okay, the next one: "meet up with".

다음은 "meet up with"입니다.

So, "meet up with" is another way to say hang out or do something social with people.

"meet up with"는 다른 사람과 놀러가거나 같이 어울리는 것을 말하는 다른 방법이에요.

It's fun or it should be fun.

이것은 재밌거나 재밌어야만 해요.

Okay?

So usually it's with friends, it can be with other people, too.

그래서 대개 이것은 친구들과 있을 때 쓰여요. 다른 사람과 있을 때도 쓰이긴 하죠.

But when you meet up with somebody it's not a business meeting, it's not formal.

하지만 여러분이 누군가를 만난다(meet up with)는 것은 회사 미팅도 아니고, 격식적인자리도 아니라는 것을 의미해요.

It's you're meeting for fun.

이것은 재미를 위해 만나는 것이에요.

So, for example: "I met up with my friends tonight."

예를 들어, "I met up with my friends tonight(나는 오늘 밤 내 친구들을 만났어.)"

So, this is why people get really confused by these things because when we just have

그래서 사람들이 이것들을 정말 많이 헷갈려해요.

"meet" with no prepositions after, it indicates a first or second meeting where you don't

"meet"뒤에 전치사를 붙이지 않는다면, 모르는 사람과 한 번이나 두 번을 만났다는 것을 의미하고,

know the person.

For "meet with" it indicates some sort of formal situation, whereas "meet up with" is

"meet with"는 격식적인 상황, "meet up with"는

about a fun situation.

It's pretty much saying: "I'm hanging out with somebody.

"I'm hanging out with somebody.(누군가와 오늘 놀러 갈거야.)

I met up with my friends tonight.

I met up with my friends tonight.(오늘밤 내 친구들이랑 만났어.)

I'm hanging out with my friends tonight."

I'm hanging out with my friends tonight.(오늘밤 친구들이랑 놀러 나갈거야.)"
