So, the key thing here is that you're looking at different stages on how something is made,

Processes can be natural or they can be man-made.

So it's good when you see a diagram to figure out: Where's the beginning, and where's the end?

One really important thing that you should include when you're describing a process,

Sequencers help us understand the order of something.

So, it helps us understand what is first, second, third, fourth, and so on.

We can use the word "step" or "stage" when we're describing a process.

jab hum kisi process ko samjha rahe hai tab hum "step" ya "stage" jaise shabdo ka istemaal kar sakte hai

Okay: "Next", this is another sequencer.

Ek aur sequencer hai "Next".

"Next, we put down the pickles on top of the bun", if you like pickles.

"Next, we put down the pickles (Achaar) on top of the bun", agar apko pickle pasand hai.

If you don't like pickles, you don't put them on.

Apko pickle pasand nahi hai to aap nahi rakhenge.

But in this case, in this sandwich, we put the pickles on the bun.

You don't have to use all of them, but you should be using some of them when you describe a process.

Next, let's look at the grammar of describing a process.

Okay, so when you are describing a process it's very, very important to use the passive

voice.

You can use other verb tenses, too, but the most common is going to be the passive voice.

aap dusre kriya kaal be istemaal kar sakte hai par passive voice hi sabse aam rahegi

So, what is the passive voice?

I have here two sentences.

Mere pass yaha 2 vakya hai

One of them is called the passive voice, the other one is the active voice.

ek passive voice me hai or ek active voice.

My two sentences are: "I make a cup of tea." and "A cup of tea is made."

dono vakya hai : " I make a cup of tea." aur "A cup of tea is made."

Now, I want you to look at these two sentences.

inn dono vakya ko dhyan se dekhe.

What are some of the differences between them?

dono me kya antar hai?

Well, one thing you might notice is this has "I" in it.

ek chiz aap dekhenge ki isme "I" hai.

"I make a cup of tea."

"I make a cup of tea."

Whereas this one, we don't actually know who made the cup of tea.

halaki iss me hume ye nahi pata ke cup of tea kisne banai

So, you'll notice that when...

aap dekhenge ki jab.....

This is active, by the way, and this is passive.

ye active hai or ye passive

In the active voice, the person is not important.

active voice me vyakti(person) jaruri nahi hai.

The person doing the action isn't...

Jo Vyakti kriya kar raha hai wo

Now, this is very different from the passive voice, where we don't actually know who made

The verbs themselves are different, too.

Verb(Kriya) bhi alag hai

Here, we have the simple present: "I make", whereas if you look down here,

yaha simple present hai: "I make", jab ki agar aap yaha dekhe

we have: "is" and "made".

hamare pass hai: "is" and "made".

So, when we use the active voice, we're just using, you know, simple present, simple past.

jab bhi hum active voice ka istemaal karte hai tab hum simple present ya simple past ka istemaal karte hai.

We can pretty much use any tense.

hum koi bhi tense istemaal kar sakte hai

But you'll notice, there is no "be" verb.

par aap dekhenge ki yaha koi "be" verb nahi hai.

Whereas, here: "A cup of tea is", we have the "be" verb, and "made", we have a past participle.

jab ki yaha par hamare pass hai: "A cup of tea is", jo hai "be" verb, aur "made", jo ki hai past participle

So, the construction of the two sentences is different.

matlab ye ke dono vakya ka nirmaan alag hai

So, if you're wondering what the rule is: For the passive, we have an object.

Theek hai?

agar aap soch rahe hai ke niyam kya hai: passive voice me hamare pass object hai.

In this case our object is "a cup of tea".

iss udaharan me hamara object hai "a cup of tea".

We have the "be" verb, so in this case, "is" is the "be" verb.

yaha hai "be" verb, iss udaharan me "is" hai "be" verb.

It can also be: "was" or "has been", or "will be".

ye "was" ya "has been", ya "will be" bhi ho sakta hai.

When I say: "'be' verb", it's a form of the verb "be"-okay?-depending on what tense you're

So, let's think of another example.

So, if we wanted to describe the process of making a cup of tea, we might start with the kettle.

to agar hum tea banane ke process ka varnan kar rahe hai to hum shuruat karenge kettle se.

What do we do with the kettle?

hum kettle ke saath kya karenge?

Well, we fill it with cold water.

hum usme pani bharenge.

Okay?

Theek hai?

So, we put cold water into the kettle.

hum kettle me thande pani bharenge.

Now, how could we make this into the passive voice?

hum ise passive voice me kaise badlenge?

What's a passive voice sentence we could use?

hum konsa passive voice vakya istemaal karenge?

"The kettle __________ with cold water."

"The kettle __________ with cold water."

Well, the first thing we know is we need to have our "be" verb somewhere.

sabse pehle hume pata hai ki hume kahi na kahi chahiye "be" verb.

And we're talking about the present, we're talking about a process that still happens today.

aur hum vartamaan (present) me baat kar rahe hai aur process abhi bhi ho raha hai.

So, let's put: "The kettle is", so we have our "be" verb, and now we need a past participle.

to hum "The kettle is", yaha rakhenge, to humare pass hai "be" verb, ab hume chahiye past participle.

Let's say the kettle...

jaise ki kettle...

We fill a kettle, so what's the past participle of "fill"?

hum kettle ko fill kar rahe hai, to "fill" ka past participle kya hai?

"Filled".

"Filled".

So, we can say: "The kettle is filled with cold water."

to hum keh sakte hai: "The kettle is filled with cold water."

So, if we wanted to put that in the passive voice, again we need our "be" verb, so we'll put "is",

agar hume ise passive voice me badalna hai to hume jarurat padegi "be" verb ki, isliye hum "is", likhenge,

and then we can put a verb here in the past participle.

phir hum past participle me verb rakhenge.

"The kettle is put on the stove." or "The kettle is placed on the stove."

"The kettle is put on the stove". or "The kettle is place on the stove."

We can also say that.

hum ye bhi keh sakte hai.

Okay.

So these are both par-...

Theek hai.

Past participle hai.

Now, what about if, you know, we were using many kettles at the same time?

Ab, agar hum ek se jyada kettle istemaal kar rahe hai to kya hoga?

And so, we had an "s" here, and we were talking about many kettles.

Would this still stay as "is"?

When we're talking about plural, "kettles" has an "s" and it's plural, so this would

nahi.

actually turn into "are": "The kettles are put on the stove top."

badal jayega "are" me: "The kettles are put on the stove top."

"The kettle"-because there's only one-"is filled with cold water."

"The kettel"- kyunki yaha ek hi hai-"is filled with cold water."

Okay, so what's another step in the making of tea?

achha to tea banane ka agla charan kya hai?

In this case: "A cup and teabag __________ from the cupboard."

iss udaharan me: A cup and teabag _______ from the cupboard."

So, I take a cup and a teabag from the cupboard.

to me cupboard me se cup aur teabag nikalungi.

So, how can I make this into the passive voice?

to kya me ise passive voice me badal sakti hu?

Well, "A cup and teabag"...

A cup and teabag"....

So how many things do we have here?

to hamare pass yaha kitni chize hai?

We have a cup and a teabag, so that's two, so we would use the verb "are".

humare pass hai do chize, a cup aur a teabag, isliye hum "are" verb ka istemaal karenge.

So, they are "taken from the cupboard".

isliye wo "taken from the cupboard".

We take the cup and the teabag from the cupboard.

hum cup aur teabag cupboard me se nikalenge

"The cup and teabag are taken from the cupboard."

"The cup and teabag are taken from the cupboard."

So, again, we have our "be" verb and our past participle.

phir se hamare pass hai "be" verb aur past participle.

In terms of past participles, these are things you just need to memorize.

ye sab aapko yaad rakhna hai past participle ke vishay me.

Logically, sometimes, you know...

aap jante hai kabhi kabar tarkik taur par

Sometimes you'll see "ed", sometimes you'll see "en", so they have different endings.

kabhi kabaar aap "ed" dekhenge aur kabhi "en", matlab dono ke ant alag honge.

So the best thing to do is find a past participle list, and memorize it for the words that you use a lot.

sabse achha ye hoga ke aap ek past participle ki list (suchi) banaye aur use yaad kar le

Like "take".

jaise ki "take".

"Take" is a common word. "Taken", that's the past participle.

"Take" ek samanya shabd hai. "Taken" uska past participle hai.

Okay.

Theek hai.

So, there are many more stages to making a cup of tea, but we're going to end in the

cup of tea banane ke aur bhi stages hai par hum yaha khatam karenge

middle of making the tea.

tea banane ke beech me.

So, this is our last stage we're going to talk about.

ye hai akhri charan, chale iski baat kare.

"Once the water boils, it is poured into a cup."

"Once the water boils, it is poured into a cup."

So, we can use this in the past participle: "is boiled".

hum past part participle ka istemaal karenge jo hai "is boiled".

"Once the water is boiled, it is poured into a cup."

"Once the water is boiled, it is poured into a cup."

Okay.

So, this is not the final stage.

Theek hai.

ye akhri charan (stage) nahi hai.

In the final stage, we drink the tea.

akhri charan me hum chai piyenge.

Okay?

Theek hai?

So, again, very important to use this type of grammar when you're writing about processes,

to bahot jaruri hai ki aap iss prakaar ka grammer istemaal kare jab aap process ka vivaran de rahe hai.

especially on the IELTS because they want to see that you are...

khas kar IELTS me kyunki ki wo dekhna chahte hai ki

You know different types of grammar.

aapko alag alag prakaar ka grammer ata hai.

You have a range of grammar.

grammer ki kayi shreri (range) hoti hai.

Okay?

Theek hai?

And so this can help show the range of grammar, and that you know the appropriate grammar

ye darshata hai ki aap grammar ki range jante hai aur aap use upyukt tarike se

to use when you are describing a process.

istemaal kar sakte hai process ko samjhane me.

So, let's look at one other tip on how to do processes.

yaha hum ek aur tip dekhenge kaise processes ko darshate hai.

Okay, so, so far I have talked about sequencers and the grammar of writing about processes.

ab tak humne sequencers aur grammar ki baat ki hai processes ke baare me.

Now, I want to talk a little bit about the IELTS, and something you really shouldn't

ab me baat karna chahti hu IELTS ke baare me aur wo jo aapko kabhi nahi

do when you write the IELTS, especially...

Well, with processes or anything, but here is an example of a question on the IELTS that

processes ya kuch aur, yaha hum ek IELTS ka udaharan dekhte hai

has to do with processes.

jo processes se sambandhit hai

Now, here in this question you don't actually see a diagram, but usually there would be

iss sawal me aapko aarekh (diagram) nahi dikh raha but aam taur par

images or a diagram of a process.

tasveer ya aarekh (image) hoga.

So, the question is: "The diagram below shows the process of making a cup of tea.

to sawal ye hai: "The diagram below shows the process of making a cup of tea.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features."

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features."

So, this is the type of question you'll get.

aapko iss prakar ke sawal milenge.

Okay?

It might be: "The diagram below shows photosynthesis" or "The diagram below shows how concrete is made."

Theek hai?

"The diagram below shows photosynthesis" ho sakta hai ya phir "The diagram below shows how concrete is made."

Okay? So, it might be man-made, it might be natural.

Theek hai? to ve krutrim ya kudrati ho sakte hai.

Now, what a lot of students do is they see this, and they decide to write their introduction,

to, jyadatar students ye dekhte hai aur apna introduction likhne ka tay karte hai,

and they copy the words from here into their introduction.

aur wo yaha se words copy karte hai apne introduction me

So they read this, and then they start their answer with:

to wo ye padhte hai aur apna jawab shuru karte hai

"The diagram below shows the process of making a cup of tea."

"The diagram below shows the process of making a cup of tea."

You should not copy the question words.

aapko sawal ke shabd copy nahi karne hai.

Okay? It's very important that you paraphrase, that you use your own words in your first sentence.

theek hai? sabse jyada jaruri hai ki aap pehle sentence me apne shabd istemaal kare yani apni sankshipt vyakhya de

So, if this was the question I had, a couple things I might do is, instead of using the

to agar ye sawaal hai mera pass, kuchh chize me kar sakti hu, "diagram"

word "diagram", I might use the word: "illustration", or "image", "images". Okay?

shabd istemaal karne ki jagah me istemaal karungi "illustration", ya "image", "images". Theek hai?

And instead of using the word "shows", I'd use a different verb.

to "shows" shabd ki jagah me aur koi shabd istemaal karungi.

So, instead of: "The diagram shows", I would say: "The illustration demonstrates"

to "The diagram shows", ki jagah me likhungi: "The illustration demonstrates"

or "The diagram illustrates". Okay?

ya "The diagram illustrates". Theek hai?

So, it's good to change the language, and this is one of the easier ways to do it, is

to language badalna achha rahega aur iska asaan tarika hai

change the verb.

verb badalna.

If they use "show", use "demonstrates" or "illustrates".

to agar waha "show" likha hai aao likh sakte hai "demonstrates" ya "illustrates".

Okay?

Theek hai?

And if you can, instead of the word "diagram", use the word "illustration" or "images".

to ho sake to "diagram" ki jagah "illustration" ya "images" shabd istemaal karein

Okay?

Theek hai?

Another thing a lot of students do is they would copy the rest of it:

ek aur chiz jo bahot students karte hai wo hai ki wo baki sab copy karte hai:

"The process of making a cup of tea".

"The process of making a cup of tea".

You can also change this around.

Aap ise bhi badal sakte hai.

So, in my example, I put: "The diagram illustrates how a cup of tea is made."

to mere udaharan me me likhungi: The diagram illustrates how a cup of tea is made."

So, I've changed it from the active voice to the passive voice.

mene yaha active voice ko passive voice badal diya hai

You don't have to do that.

aapko ye karne ki jarurat nahi hai

My main point here is: Don't copy the instructions.

me mudda hai ki : instructions copy na kare.

Use your own words in your introduction.

introduction me apne shabd istemaal kare

Okay?

Theek hai?

Another tip that's very important when you're describing processes is:

ek aur chiz jo process samjhane me kaam ati hai wo hai

Take a couple of minutes to actually look at what's happening.

jo ho raha hai uspe kuchh minutes dhyan de.

A lot of students, they start writing, but they don't actually understand the pictures

jyadatar students turant likhna shuru kar dete hai bina ye samjhe ke tasveer me

they're looking at.

we kya dekh rahe hai.

So, take a moment to figure out: Where does the process start, what happens,

to kuchh samay de ye samjhne me ke: kaha process shuru ho raha hai, age kya ho raha hai,

and where does it end?

aur kaha khatam ho raha hai?

What is the final product?

antim parinaam kya hoga?

How many stages are there?

kitne charan(stages) hai?

How many steps?

Kitne charan(steps) hai?

Okay?

So it's important to ask yourself some questions before you start writing to make sure you

really understand what the pictures are showing you, and what the illustration is showing you.
