5 Proverbs to Inspire Language Learners

Hey, everyone. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this inspirational video on

learning a second language. So, whether you are learning English or Spanish or Portuguese,

Korean, Farsi, it doesn't matter. It's a long journey. It's a long commitment, and sometimes

we need some words to inspire us to keep going, and that is the purpose of this video. So,

today, I am going to give you five proverbs, five sayings, that will hopefully inspire

you, motivate you to keep going, because this is a journey, and I'm going to help you take

that journey and inspire you a little bit today. All right, number one, Rome wasn't

built in a day. So, we talk about a long journey. We know that learning a language doesn't happen

in one month. It doesn't happen in two or three months. It's something that requires

a long commitment and something that takes a long time to do. So, if you consider Rome

to be your language skill, your second language skill, it takes time to build. You have to

build it brick by brick, go step by step, and commit to the process, because you will

grow, you will develop, you will learn this language. You just need to remember it's a

long journey, and that Rome wasn't built in a day.

Number two, actions speak louder than words. Have you been talking about learning a second

language for a long time? You've always wanted to do it. You know what you need to do to

do it, but you just don't do it? Well, remember, you have to make it happen. You have to take

the necessary steps. Don't just talk about it, actually do it. Go online, watch movies,

listen to music, watch TV shows, you know, watch videos like this one, and actually do

the work that is necessary. Don't just talk about it, do it.

Three, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. So, this is a cooking proverb.

You need to break eggs in order to make an omelet. Now, I'm going to tie this to making

mistakes when you are learning a language. Again, whether it's English, French, Japanese,

it doesn't matter. You need to know that mistakes will happen, that mistakes are part of the

learning process, that you will make them. They are unavoidable, but don't feel so bad.

Don't be worried about breaking the egg, because if you worry so much about breaking the egg,

you will suffer from perfection paralysis. Okay? You cannot be worried about having everything

be perfect all the time. You will make mistakes, and it's okay. As long as you learn from those

mistakes and you do improve your skills, whether it's grammar, vocabulary, punctuation skills

and writing, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.

Number four, if you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. Now, you can learn a language

by yourself to a certain degree. You can immerse yourself in the pop culture and the culture

of a language. But at some point, you will want to talk with other people. You will want

to have conversations. In that situation, you need to help others learn, and they can

help you learn in return, or you can get a teacher to help you as well, of course. So,

one of the most important parts of learning almost anything and becoming more proficient

at it, especially something that you're learning because you want to communicate with other

people, is to find communities who are learning the same thing. So, you can find online communities

who are learning English or another language and communicate with them. Go in the comment

sections of YouTube videos, or Facebook, or any type of social media, or maybe an online

blog at EnglishAlex.com, for example. Check it out.

Let's develop a language-learning community. Number five, learn to walk before you learn

to run. You have to start with the fundamentals. You cannot expect to start a race three kilometers

deep, you know, if a race is five kilometers, for example. You have to take it step by step.

Go one step at a time. I just said the same thing twice, but that's okay. And one day,

you will learn to run, maybe even all the way to Rome as you finish building it. So,

as a reminder, let's go over these one more time.

Number one, Rome wasn't built in a day. It takes time to learn a language. Commit to

the process. Two, actions speak louder than words. Don't just talk about wanting to learn

a language. Do it. Number three, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.

You're going to make mistakes. It's part of the process. Do not be paralyzed by perfection.

a language-learning community and interact with them. Five, learn to walk before you

learn to run. Basically, learn the fundamentals and go step by step from beginner to intermediate

to advanced, whatever that terminology means to you, basically.
