Animal Idioms - Common English Idioms With Meaning

In today’s video, we’re going to  be learning 30 British idioms.  

오늘 영상에서는 영국 관용구 30개를 배워보겠습니다.

An idiom is a common phrase  which is used colloquially  

관용구는 구어체로 사용되는 일반적인 구문

but the meaning is not immediately obvious.  

이지만 의미가 즉시 명확하지는 않습니다.

We use so many idioms in our day to day life and  many of them are animal-related, so we’re going  

우리는 일상 생활에서 매우 많은 관용구를 사용하고 그 중 많은 관용구가 동물과 관련되어 있으므로

to focus on idioms which are animal-based today. The first idiom is: Fly on the wall. 
To be a fly  

오늘은 동물 기반 관용구에 초점을 맞출 것입니다. 첫 번째 관용구는 Fly on the wall입니다. Be a fly

on the wall means to be unnoticed while watching  or listening to something.
“They’re discussing  

on the wall은 무언가를 보거나 듣는 동안 눈에 띄지 않는다는 의미입니다 . “그들은

the argument now. I’d love to be a fly on the  wall so I could hear what they were saying.”

The second idiom is: Bee’s knees.
If something is  the bee’s knees, that means it is excellent and of

The fifth idiom is: Sitting duck.
A sitting  duck is an easy target, something or someone  

다섯 번째 관용구는 앉아있는 오리입니다. 앉아 오리는 공격에 취약한 무언가 또는 누군가 손쉬운 표적입니다

which is vulnerable to attack.
“If we leave the  shop doors unlocked it’ll be a sitting duck.” 

. " 상점 문을 잠그지 않은 상태로 두면 앉아 있는 오리가 될 것입니다."

The sixth idiom is: To chicken out.
To  chicken out of something means to back  

여섯 번째 관용구는 To chicken out입니다. To chicken out of something은

out of it because of feeling scared or worried.  
“James was going to go on the rollercoaster  

겁이 나거나 걱정이 되어 뒤로 물러나다는 뜻입니다. "James는 롤러코스터를 탈 예정이었는데

but he chickened out at the last minute.” The seventh idiom is: A wild goose chase.
A wild

goose chase is a pointless task, particularly  one that involves travel. 
“She sent me

The eighth idiom is: To take a bull by its  horns.
This means to face a problem directly.  

여덟 번째 관용구는 황소의 뿔을 잡는 것입니다 . 이것은 문제에 직접 직면하는 것을 의미합니다.

Sometimes you might hear someone say to ‘grab’  a bull by its horns, which means the same

The tenth idiom is: Until the cows come  home.
Until the cows come home means for a long,

possibly even never-ending length of time. It’s  usually used when talking about something that you

hold your horses means to wait.  
Person 1: (walks through the door)

Person 2: Brilliant, you’re  home. I’ve been wanting to talk to you  

안녕하세요. 사람 2: 훌륭합니다. 집에 오셨습니다.

The thirteenth idiom is: Straight from  the horse’s mouth.
If you hear something  

열세 번째 관용구는 바로 말의 입에서 나온 것입니다.

straight from the horse’s mouth, that means  you are hearing it straight from the source;  

말의 입에서 에서 직접 듣고 있다는 것을 듣고 있다는 것을 직접 듣고 있다는 것을 듣는다면 소스에서 직접 듣고 있습니다.

from somebody who has direct  and personal experience.  

직접 적이고 개인적인 경험이 있는 사람에게서


“I don’t usually pay attention to gossip but  I heard this straight from the horse’s mouth.” 

“저는 평소에 험담에 관심을 두지 않는데 말의 입에서 직접 들었습니다.” 열네

The fourteenth idiom is: In two shakes of a lamb’s  tail.
In two shakes of a lamb’s tail means in a  

번째 관용구는 양 꼬리를 두 번 흔드는 것입니다 . In two shakes of a lamb's tail은

very short amount of time.
“I’ll be back with  a cup of tea in two shakes of a lamb’s tail.” 

아주 짧은 시간 안에를 의미합니다. “ 양꼬리 두 번 흔들 때 차 한 잔 들고 돌아올게요.” 열

The fifteenth idiom is: To go the whole hog.
To  go the whole hog means to really commit to  

다섯 번째 관용구는 To go the whole hog입니다. to go the whole hog는 실제로

something and to take it as far as possible.
“Most  people in the office don’t celebrate Halloween,  

무언가에 전념하고 가능한 한 멀리 가져가는 것을 의미합니다. " 사무실에 있는 대부분의 사람들은 할로윈을 기념하지 않지만

but Anna goes the whole hog every year.” The sixteenth idiom is: The cat’s

Similar to the bee’s knees, if something  or someone is the cat’s pyjamas, that means they  

pyjamas입니다. 꿀벌의 무릎과 유사하게 무언가 또는 누군가가 고양이 잠옷이라면 그것은 그들이 최고라는 것을 의미합니다

“My last teacher wasn’t very good  but my new one is great- she’s the cat’s pyjamas.”

The seventeenth idiom is: To let the cat  out of the bag.
To let the cat out of the  

열일곱 번째 관용구는 To let the cat out of the bag입니다. let the cat out of the

bag means to reveal a secret. This could be  accidentally or it could be on purpose.
“I  

bag은 비밀을 밝히는 것을 의미합니다. 실수일 수도 있고 고의일 수도 있습니다. “

think it’s time I let the cat  out of the bag… I’m pregnant!” 

고양이를 가방에서 꺼내야 할 때인 것 같아요 … 임신했어요!” 열

The eighteenth idiom is: Cat got your  tongue?
This is a question you might  

여덟 번째 관용구: Cat got your tongue? 이것은

ask somebody who is being unusually quiet.  
“What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?” 

비정상적으로 조용한 사람에게 물어볼 수 있는 질문입니다. “무슨 일이야? 고양이가 당신의 혀를 잡았습니까?” 열

The nineteenth idiom is: Raining  cats and dogs.
If someone says it is  

아홉 번째 관용구는 Raining cats and dogs입니다. 누군가가

raining cats and dogs, that means it  is raining very heavily outside.
“I  

고양이와 개에 비가 내리고 있다고 하면 밖에 비가 많이 내리고 있다는 뜻입니다. “

wanted to go for a run but it’s raining cats and  dogs outside so I think I’ll go tomorrow instead.” 

뛰고 싶었는데 밖에서 고양이와 개들이 쏟아져내려서 대신 내일 갈 것 같아요.”

The twentieth idiom is: To let sleeping dogs  lie.
To let sleeping dogs lie means to leave  

스무 번째 관용구는 잠자는 개를 눕히다입니다. 잠자는 개에게 거짓말을 하게 한다는 것은

a situation alone, to not interfere so you  don’t cause trouble.
Person 1: “I’m so angry,  

문제를 일으키지 않도록 상황을 내버려 두는 것을 의미합니다. 사람 1: “너무 화가 나서

I’m going to call her right now and argue with  her.”
Person 2: “Wait a minute. Don’t you think

it might be better just to let sleeping dogs lie?” The twenty-first idiom is: In the doghouse.
To

be in the doghouse means to be  in trouble or disgrace. Usually,  

개집에 있다는 것은 곤경에 처하거나 수치를 당한다는 뜻입니다. 일반적으로

because you’ve upset or angered somebody with  something you’ve done or not done.

smell a rat means to be suspicious of a lie.

because she had other plans but I smell a rat.” The twenty-fifth idiom is: Fishy.
If something is  

쥐 냄새가 난다.” 스물다섯 번째 관용구는 비린내. 비린내가 난다면

fishy, that means it is suspicious.
“There’s

something fishy going on in that office.  Something’s not quite right with their numbers.”

The twenty-sixth idiom is: To have bigger  fish to fry.
If you have bigger fish to fry,  

스물여섯 번째 관용구: 튀길 더 큰 생선을 갖다. 더 큰 생선을 튀겨야 한다면

that means you have more  important or better things to

If something is another kettle of fish,

or a whole other kettle of fish, that means  it is entirely different.
Person 1: “I’m just

Crocodile tears are fake tears,

for example, if somebody is pretending to cry or  has forced themselves to cry to gain something.

The twenty-ninth idiom is: Elephant in the  room.
An elephant in the room is something obvious

and uncomfortable which has not been  discussed.

And finally, the thirtieth idiom is: To have the  lion’s share.
To have or get the lion’s share

of something means to have the largest amount of  something.
“As the main character in Harry Potter,
