British VS American. 33 Vocabulary Differences

Have you ever wondered how different are  American English and British English?

Today I’m gonna tell you 33 vocabulary differences 

Hoje vou contar 33 diferenças de vocabulário

between American English and British English. They have a huge number of

words for the same things and today we’re gonna learn them.

Let’s start with the food and drinks

Vamos começar com os alimentos e bebidas

The first one is A sweet thing made of colored sugar. 

O primeiro é um doce feito de açúcar colorido.

It’s often sold at fairs and festivals. In Britain people call it Candy floss 

Muitas vezes é vendido em feiras e festivais. Na Grã-Bretanha, as pessoas chamam de algodão-doce.

in the US American people call it cotton candy.

Nos Estados Unidos, os americanos chamam de algodão-doce.

The second one is drinks that contain dissolved carbon dioxide. 

O segundo são as bebidas que contêm dióxido de carbono dissolvido. Os

Americans call them pop drinks or soda and in Great Britain they NEVER  

americanos os chamam de refrigerantes ou refrigerantes e na Grã-Bretanha NUNCA os

call it soda or pop, they say Fizzy drinks.

By the way, I never consume any carbonated drinks because they contain lots of sugar.

Number 3 is 

número 3 é

a kind of bread made of flour that  is partly milled from whole grains.

uma espécie de pão feito de farinha que é parcialmente moída de grãos integrais.

In the US it’s called whole wheat bread and in Great Britain they usually say Brown bread.

Nos Estados Unidos é chamado de pão integral e na Grã-Bretanha costuma-se dizer pão integral.

The next one is a type of milk that is about 3.5 percent fat. 

O próximo é um tipo de leite com cerca de 3,5% de gordura.

In American English it’s usually called whole milk. In Great Britain it’s full fat milk.

No inglês americano, geralmente é chamado de leite integral. Na Grã-Bretanha, é leite gordo. O

Number 5 is – peppers, 

número 5 é - pimentão,

this is how Americans call it. And British say bell peppers.

é assim que os americanos o chamam. E os britânicos dizem pimentão.

The next one is a store  that sells food and products. 

A próxima é uma loja que vende alimentos e produtos. Os

Americans use a grocery store. 

americanos usam uma mercearia.

Whereas in Great Britain they  use the supermarket or the shop.

Enquanto na Grã-Bretanha eles usam o supermercado ou a loja.

Also the store where you can buy some  alcohol, a bottle of wine or whiskey, 

Também a loja onde você pode comprar álcool, uma garrafa de vinho ou uísque,

it’s called ABC STORE in the United States. Alcoholic beverage control states, 

chama-se ABC STORE nos Estados Unidos. Estados de controle de bebidas alcoólicas,

US states controlling the sale  of alcoholic beverages, and 

estados dos EUA que controlam a venda de bebidas alcoólicas e

in the United Kingdom that kind  of stores is called off-licence. 

no Reino Unido esse tipo de loja é chamado de off-licence.

These are extremely different names.

Estes são nomes extremamente diferentes.

Number 8 What do you think? 

Número 8 O que você acha?

This is a case of beer in American English. The British call it 24 pack.

Este é um caso de cerveja em inglês americano. Os britânicos chamam de 24 pack.

This thing is used by  customers at the grocery store, 

Essa coisa é usada pelos clientes no supermercado,

where they put the items they wanna buy. In the Us people call it  

onde eles colocam os itens que desejam comprar. Nos Estados Unidos, as pessoas chamam de

shopping cart or just cart. British people say “trolley”. 

carrinho de compras ou apenas carrinho. Os britânicos dizem “trolley”.

Now let’s compare some clothes and footwear Number 10 is a pair of trousers with an  

Agora vamos comparar algumas roupas e calçados. O número 10 é uma calça com um

extra piece of cloth that covers the chest,

and is held in place by a strap over each shoulder. In American English people use the word overalls. 

e é preso por uma alça em cada ombro. No inglês americano, as pessoas usam a palavra macacão.

And the British say dungarees.

E os britânicos dizem macacão.

Number eleven. When I go swimming, diving or surfing,  

Número onze. Quando vou nadar, mergulhar ou surfar,

I put on my…swimsuit

Also Americans say a bathing suit. And one piece is a slang 

americanos também dizem maiô. E uma peça é uma

word for this type of clothing. British people call it a swimming costume.

Number twelve. There is an interesting word in American English 

Número doze. Existe uma palavra interessante no inglês americano

to call a type of underwear, with  no sleeves, usually made of cotton, 

para chamar um tipo de cueca, sem mangas, geralmente de algodão,

that covers the upper part of the body: a wife beater.

que cobre a parte superior do corpo: espancador de esposa.

When I heard this word for the  first time I was so confused, 

Quando ouvi esta palavra pela primeira vez, fiquei muito confuso,

because I understood a literal meaning: a man who beats his wife – a wife beater.

porque entendi um significado literal: um homem que bate em sua esposa - um espancador de esposa. Os

British people call this thing “a vest”.

britânicos chamam isso de “colete”.

It often rains in Great Britain and people wear their 

Muitas vezes chove na Grã-Bretanha e as pessoas usam

wellies or welly boots,

galochas ou galochas,

and when it rains in the US  people put on their rain boots.

Number fourteen. Do you know what

is this type of open shoes called? In Great Britain they say flip flops,

chama esse tipo de sapato aberto? Na Grã-Bretanha, eles dizem chinelos

and in the US they also say flip flops.

e nos EUA também dizem chinelos.

The next one is running shoes or sneakers in America,

O próximo é tênis de corrida ou tênis na América

and trainers in Great Britain. Americans never use trainers.

e tênis na Grã-Bretanha. Os americanos nunca usam tênis. O

Number sixteen is a wide road for fast moving traffic. 

número dezesseis é uma estrada larga para tráfego rápido.

In the US it’s highway or interstate, and in British English they NEVER say  

Nos EUA, é rodovia ou interestadual, e no inglês britânico NUNCA dizem

highway or interstate, they say motorway.

estrada ou interestadual, dizem autoestrada.

The next one is a path with a hard surface on both sides of a road.

O próximo é um caminho com superfície dura em ambos os lados de uma estrada.

In Great Britain people say "pavement". And the Americans say "sidewalk".

Na Grã-Bretanha, as pessoas dizem "pavimento". E os americanos dizem "calçada". O

Number eighteen is a cover for a bed,  

número dezoito é uma capa de cama,

that is filled with a soft warm material.

preenchida com um material macio e quente.

In Great Britain it’s called "a duvet", In the US people say "a comforter".

Na Grã-Bretanha é chamado de "um edredom", nos EUA as pessoas dizem "um consolador".

The next one is a set of rooms on one floor of a large building.

O próximo é um conjunto de quartos em um andar de um grande edifício.

In Great Britain people say "a flat", 

Na Grã-Bretanha, as pessoas dizem "um apartamento",

And in America everyone calls it "apartment", Americans never say "the flat".

E na América todo mundo chama de "apartamento", os americanos nunca dizem "o apartamento". O

Number twenty is a shop where you can buy medicines. 

número vinte é uma loja onde você pode comprar remédios.

In Great Britain it’s a chemist, In the US this is called a drugstore.

Na Grã-Bretanha é uma farmácia, nos Estados Unidos chama-se farmácia.

When I hear the word "a chemist", I think of a person who studies chemistry, 

Quando ouço a palavra "um químico", penso em uma pessoa que estuda química

or a scientist who works with chemicals. "A drugstore" is more understandable to me.

ou em um cientista que trabalha com produtos químicos. "Uma drogaria" é mais compreensível para mim.

Number twenty one. Do you know how do Americans call Mc Donalds? 

Número vinte e um. Você sabe como os americanos chamam Mc Donalds?

It depends on the area, but in the most parts of the US

Depende da área, mas na maior parte dos EUA as

people call it Mickey D’s. In GB people say Mackeys.

pessoas chamam de Mickey D's. Em GB, as pessoas dizem Mackeys.

The next one is 1 dollar coin – a buck – one buck,  

A próxima é uma moeda de 1 dólar - um dólar - um dólar,

two bucks, three bucks. And in Great Britain  

dois dólares, três dólares. E na Grã-Bretanha

they have pounds. A pound is called "a quid".

eles têm libras. Uma libra é chamada de "uma libra".

Number 23. Where would an American go to fill up their car? 

Número 23. Onde um americano iria para abastecer o carro?

To the gas station, of course, and a Brit would go to a petrol station.

Para o posto de gasolina, é claro, e um britânico iria a um posto de gasolina.

The next one is hair which is cut 

O próximo é o cabelo que é cortado

so that it hangs over your forehead. 

de modo que fique pendurado na testa.

British people say "fringe". And Americans use the word "bangs".

Os britânicos dizem "franja". E os americanos usam a palavra "franja". O

Number 25 is a large truck

número 25 é um caminhão grande

that is made in two separate sections. In American English it’s called a tractor-trailer, 

feito em duas seções separadas. Em inglês americano, chama-se trator-reboque

and in GB they call it a lorry.

e, em inglês, é chamado de caminhão.

The next word is a party before someone gets married. 

A próxima palavra é uma festa antes de alguém se casar.

In Great Britain people say a hen do or a stag do, or a hen night.

Na Grã-Bretanha, as pessoas dizem que uma despedida de solteiro ou despedida de solteiro, ou uma despedida de solteiro.

In America they call it a bachelor party 

Na América, eles chamam de despedida de solteiro

for a man who invites only his male friends, 

para um homem que convida apenas seus amigos do sexo masculino

and a bachelorette party for a woman and her female friends.

The next one is a sofa or a settee in the UK 

O próximo é um sofá ou canapé no Reino Unido

and a couch in the United States. In Britain people never use a couch

when they mean this thing.

quando querem dizer isso. O

Number twenty eight is a large area covered with trees. 

número vinte e oito é uma grande área coberta de árvores.

In American English it’s a forest, And the British say the Woods. 

No inglês americano é uma floresta, E os britânicos dizem que é o Bosque.

For an American 

Para um americano,

the woods sound kind of old-fashioned. They really rarely use this word.

a floresta parece meio antiquada. Eles realmente raramente usam essa palavra.

A check or a bill is commonly  used in American English. 

Um cheque ou uma conta é comumente usado no inglês americano.

In Britain people say a check. 

Na Grã-Bretanha, as pessoas dizem um cheque.

But there’s a difference in  meaning in American English: 

Mas há uma diferença de significado no inglês americano:

A bill is an invoice stating what you have bought and asking for payment. 

Bill é uma fatura informando o que você comprou e solicitando o pagamento.

A check is a form of payment needed to pay the bill.

Um cheque é uma forma de pagamento necessária para pagar a conta.

Number 30 is small paper tubes filled with tobacco, 

O número 30 são pequenos tubos de papel cheios de tabaco,

that people smoke: cigarettes, 

que as pessoas fumam: cigarros,

smokes or ciggies in American English, And the British also say cigarettes,  

fuma ou ciggies em inglês americano, E os britânicos também dizem cigarros,

ciggies or fags. They never use smokes.

ciggies ou fags. Eles nunca usam cigarros.

Please remember that smoking is dangerous.

Por favor, lembre-se que fumar é perigoso. Os

Americans say bathroom or restroom, which is usually used for public places.

americanos dizem banheiro ou banheiro, que geralmente é usado para locais públicos.

In Great Britain it’s the toilet, and they also often use the slang word the loo.

Na Grã-Bretanha, é o banheiro, e eles também costumam usar a gíria loo. Os

British people say that a bathroom is a room with a bath and a shower.

britânicos dizem que banheiro é um cômodo com banheira e chuveiro.

This sign means WC "water closet" and is used in many countries, 

Essa placa significa WC "banheiro" e é usada em muitos países,

but no one really says: "Where is a watercloset?" 

mas ninguém realmente diz: "Onde fica um banheiro?"

In Great Britain people say “Where is the toilet?” 

Na Grã-Bretanha, as pessoas dizem “Onde fica o banheiro?”

Or “Where is the loo?” And in the US people say 

Ou “Onde fica o banheiro?” E nos EUA as pessoas dizem

“Where is the bathroom?”. If you ask someone in the US:  

“Onde fica o banheiro?”. Se você perguntar a alguém nos EUA:

“Where is the toilet?”, it’s gonna sound kind of rude, 

“Onde fica o banheiro?”, Vai soar meio rude,

or people would say: “It’s in the bathroom”.

ou as pessoas diriam: “Está no banheiro”. O

Number 32 is a large building  

número 32 é um prédio grande

where you can leave a car for a period of time. 

onde você pode deixar o carro por um período de tempo.

It’s a parking garage in the US and a car park in Great Britain.

É um estacionamento nos EUA e um estacionamento na Grã-Bretanha.

And the last but not the least one is the last letter in the alphabet. 

E a última, mas não menos importante, é a última letra do alfabeto.

Zee in American English, and Zed in British English.

Zee em inglês americano e Zed em inglês britânico.
