British VS American. 33 Vocabulary Differences

Have you ever wondered how different are  American English and British English? 

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado qué tan diferentes son el inglés americano y el inglés británico?

Today I’m gonna tell you 33 vocabulary differences 

Hoy les contaré 33 diferencias de vocabulario

between American English and British English. They have a huge number of  

entre el inglés americano y el inglés británico. Tienen una gran cantidad de

words for the same things and today we’re gonna learn them.

palabras para las mismas cosas y hoy las vamos a aprender.

Let’s start with the food and drinks

Comencemos con la comida y las bebidas.

The first one is A sweet thing made of colored sugar. 

La primera es Una cosa dulce hecha de azúcar coloreada.

It’s often sold at fairs and festivals. In Britain people call it Candy floss 

A menudo se vende en ferias y festivales. En Gran Bretaña, la gente lo

in the US American people call it cotton candy.

llama algodón de azúcar, en los Estados Unidos, los estadounidenses lo llaman algodón de azúcar.

The second one is drinks that contain dissolved carbon dioxide. 

El segundo son las bebidas que contienen dióxido de carbono disuelto.

Americans call them pop drinks or soda and in Great Britain they NEVER  

Los estadounidenses las llaman bebidas gaseosas o soda y en Gran Bretaña NUNCA lo

call it soda or pop, they say Fizzy drinks. 

llaman soda o gaseosa , dicen bebidas gaseosas.

By the way, I never consume any carbonated drinks because they contain lots of sugar.

Por cierto, nunca consumo bebidas carbonatadas porque contienen mucha azúcar.

Number 3 is 

El número 3 es

a kind of bread made of flour that  is partly milled from whole grains.

un tipo de pan hecho de harina parcialmente molida a partir de granos integrales.

In the US it’s called whole wheat bread and in Great Britain they usually say Brown bread.

En EEUU se llama pan integral y en Gran Bretaña suelen decir pan moreno.

The next one is a type of milk that is about 3.5 percent fat. 

El siguiente es un tipo de leche que tiene aproximadamente un 3,5 por ciento de grasa.

In American English it’s usually called whole milk. In Great Britain it’s full fat milk.

En inglés americano generalmente se llama leche entera. En Gran Bretaña es leche entera.

Number 5 is – peppers, 

El número 5 es : pimientos,

this is how Americans call it. And British say bell peppers.

así es como lo llaman los estadounidenses. Y los británicos dicen pimientos.

The next one is a store  that sells food and products. 

La siguiente es una tienda que vende alimentos y productos.

Americans use a grocery store. 

Los estadounidenses usan una tienda de comestibles.

Whereas in Great Britain they  use the supermarket or the shop.

Mientras que en Gran Bretaña usan el supermercado o la tienda.

Also the store where you can buy some  alcohol, a bottle of wine or whiskey, 

También la tienda donde puedes comprar algo de alcohol, una botella de vino o whisky,

it’s called ABC STORE in the United States. Alcoholic beverage control states, 

se llama ABC STORE en los Estados Unidos. Los estados de control de bebidas alcohólicas,

US states controlling the sale  of alcoholic beverages, and 

los estados de EE. UU. que controlan la venta de bebidas alcohólicas y,

in the United Kingdom that kind  of stores is called off-licence. 

en el Reino Unido, ese tipo de tiendas se denominan sin licencia.

These are extremely different names.

Estos son nombres extremadamente diferentes.

Number 8 What do you think? 

Número 8 ¿Qué opinas?

This is a case of beer in American English. The British call it 24 pack.

Este es un caso de cerveza en inglés americano. Los británicos lo llaman 24 pack.

This thing is used by  customers at the grocery store, 

Esta cosa la usan los clientes en la tienda de comestibles,

where they put the items they wanna buy. In the Us people call it  

donde ponen los artículos que quieren comprar. En los Estados Unidos, la gente lo llama

shopping cart or just cart. British people say “trolley”. 

carrito de compras o simplemente carro. Los británicos dicen "tranvía".

Now let’s compare some clothes and footwear Number 10 is a pair of trousers with an  

Ahora comparemos algunas prendas y calzado. El número 10 es un par de pantalones con una

extra piece of cloth that covers the chest,  

pieza adicional de tela que cubre el pecho

and is held in place by a strap over each shoulder. In American English people use the word overalls. 

y se mantiene en su lugar con una correa sobre cada hombro. En inglés americano, la gente usa la palabra overoles.

And the British say dungarees.

Y los británicos dicen petos.

Number eleven. When I go swimming, diving or surfing,  

Número once. Cuando voy a nadar, bucear o hacer surf,

I put on my…swimsuit

me pongo mi… traje de baño.

Also Americans say a bathing suit. And one piece is a slang 

También los estadounidenses dicen traje de baño. Y una pieza es una

word for this type of clothing. British people call it a swimming costume.

palabra de argot para este tipo de ropa. Los británicos lo llaman traje de baño.

Number twelve. There is an interesting word in American English 

Número doce. Hay una palabra interesante en inglés americano

to call a type of underwear, with  no sleeves, usually made of cotton, 

para llamar a un tipo de ropa interior, sin mangas, generalmente de algodón,

that covers the upper part of the body: a wife beater.

que cubre la parte superior del cuerpo: un golpeador de esposas.

When I heard this word for the  first time I was so confused, 

Cuando escuché esta palabra por primera vez, estaba muy confundido,

because I understood a literal meaning: a man who beats his wife – a wife beater.

porque entendí un significado literal: un hombre que golpea a su esposa, un golpeador de esposas.

British people call this thing “a vest”.

Los británicos llaman a esto "un chaleco".

It often rains in Great Britain and people wear their 

A menudo llueve en Gran Bretaña y la gente usa sus

wellies or welly boots,

botas de agua o botas de agua,

and when it rains in the US  people put on their rain boots.

y cuando llueve en los EE. UU. la gente se pone sus botas de lluvia.

Number fourteen. Do you know what  

Número catorce. ¿Sabes cómo

is this type of open shoes called? In Great Britain they say flip flops,

se llama este tipo de zapatos abiertos? En Gran Bretaña se dice chanclas,

and in the US they also say flip flops.

y en Estados Unidos también se dice chanclas.

The next one is running shoes or sneakers in America,

El siguiente son los zapatos para correr o zapatillas de deporte en Estados Unidos

and trainers in Great Britain. Americans never use trainers.

y los entrenadores en Gran Bretaña. Los estadounidenses nunca usan entrenadores.

Number sixteen is a wide road for fast moving traffic. 

El número dieciséis es un camino ancho para tráfico rápido.

In the US it’s highway or interstate, and in British English they NEVER say  

En los EE. UU. es autopista o interestatal, y en inglés británico NUNCA dicen

highway or interstate, they say motorway.

autopista o interestatal , dicen autopista.

The next one is a path with a hard surface on both sides of a road.

El siguiente es un camino con una superficie dura a ambos lados de una carretera.

In Great Britain people say "pavement". And the Americans say "sidewalk".

En Gran Bretaña la gente dice "pavimento". Y los estadounidenses dicen "acera".

Number eighteen is a cover for a bed,  

El número dieciocho es una funda para una cama,

that is filled with a soft warm material.

que está rellena de un material suave y cálido.

In Great Britain it’s called "a duvet", In the US people say "a comforter".

En Gran Bretaña se llama "un edredón", en los Estados Unidos se dice "un edredón".

The next one is a set of rooms on one floor of a large building.

El siguiente es un conjunto de habitaciones en una sola planta de un gran edificio.

In Great Britain people say "a flat", 

En Gran Bretaña la gente dice "un piso",

And in America everyone calls it "apartment", Americans never say "the flat".

y en Estados Unidos todo el mundo lo llama "apartamento", los estadounidenses nunca dicen "el piso".

Number twenty is a shop where you can buy medicines. 

El número veinte es una tienda donde puedes comprar medicinas.

In Great Britain it’s a chemist, In the US this is called a drugstore.

En Gran Bretaña es un químico, en los EE. UU. esto se llama farmacia.

When I hear the word "a chemist", I think of a person who studies chemistry, 

Cuando escucho la palabra "químico", pienso en una persona que estudia química

or a scientist who works with chemicals. "A drugstore" is more understandable to me.

o en un científico que trabaja con productos químicos. "Una farmacia" es más comprensible para mí.

Number twenty one. Do you know how do Americans call Mc Donalds? 

Número veintiuno. ¿Sabes cómo llaman los estadounidenses a Mc Donalds?

It depends on the area, but in the most parts of the US

Depende de la zona, pero en la mayor parte de los Estados Unidos la

people call it Mickey D’s. In GB people say Mackeys.

gente lo llama Mickey D's. En GB la gente dice Mackeys.

The next one is 1 dollar coin – a buck – one buck,  

La siguiente es una moneda de 1 dólar, un dólar, un dólar,

two bucks, three bucks. And in Great Britain  

dos dólares, tres dólares. Y en Gran

they have pounds. A pound is called "a quid".

Bretaña tienen libras. Una libra se llama "una libra".

Number 23. Where would an American go to fill up their car? 

Número 23. ¿Adónde iría un estadounidense a llenar su auto?

To the gas station, of course, and a Brit would go to a petrol station.

A la gasolinera, por supuesto, y un británico iría a una gasolinera.

The next one is hair which is cut 

El siguiente es el cabello que se corta

so that it hangs over your forehead. 

para que cuelgue sobre la frente.

British people say "fringe". And Americans use the word "bangs".

Los británicos dicen "fringe". Y los estadounidenses usan la palabra "flequillo".

Number 25 is a large truck

El número 25 es un camión grande

that is made in two separate sections. In American English it’s called a tractor-trailer, 

que se fabrica en dos secciones separadas. En inglés americano se llama tractor-trailer,

and in GB they call it a lorry.

y en GB lo llaman camión.

The next word is a party before someone gets married. 

La siguiente palabra es una fiesta antes de que alguien se case.

In Great Britain people say a hen do or a stag do, or a hen night.

En Gran Bretaña la gente dice despedida de soltera o despedida de soltero o despedida de soltera.

In America they call it a bachelor party 

En Estados Unidos lo llaman despedida de soltero

for a man who invites only his male friends, 

para un hombre que solo invita a sus amigos varones

and a bachelorette party for a woman and her female friends.

y despedida de soltera para una mujer y sus amigas.

The next one is a sofa or a settee in the UK 

El siguiente es un sofá o sofá en el Reino Unido

and a couch in the United States. In Britain people never use a couch 

y un sofá en los Estados Unidos. En Gran Bretaña, la gente nunca usa un sofá

when they mean this thing.

cuando se refiere a esto.

Number twenty eight is a large area covered with trees. 

El número veintiocho es una gran área cubierta de árboles.

In American English it’s a forest, And the British say the Woods. 

En inglés americano es un bosque, y los británicos dicen el bosque.

For an American 

Para un estadounidense,

the woods sound kind of old-fashioned. They really rarely use this word.

el bosque suena un poco anticuado. Realmente rara vez usan esta palabra.

A check or a bill is commonly  used in American English. 

Un cheque o una factura se usa comúnmente en inglés americano.

In Britain people say a check. 

En Gran Bretaña la gente dice cheque.

But there’s a difference in  meaning in American English: 

Pero hay una diferencia en el significado en inglés americano:

A bill is an invoice stating what you have bought and asking for payment. 

una factura es una factura que indica lo que ha comprado y solicita el pago.

A check is a form of payment needed to pay the bill.

Un cheque es una forma de pago necesaria para pagar la factura.

Number 30 is small paper tubes filled with tobacco, 

El número 30 son pequeños tubos de papel llenos de tabaco,

that people smoke: cigarettes, 

que la gente fuma: cigarrillos,

smokes or ciggies in American English, And the British also say cigarettes,  

fuma o ciggies en inglés americano, y los británicos también dicen cigarrillos,

ciggies or fags. They never use smokes.

ciggies o fags. Nunca usan cigarrillos.

Please remember that smoking is dangerous.

Recuerde que fumar es peligroso.

Americans say bathroom or restroom, which is usually used for public places.

Los estadounidenses dicen baño o baño, que generalmente se usa para lugares públicos.

In Great Britain it’s the toilet, and they also often use the slang word the loo.

En Gran Bretaña es el inodoro, y también suelen usar la palabra del argot the loo.

British people say that a bathroom is a room with a bath and a shower.

Los británicos dicen que un baño es una habitación con bañera y ducha.

This sign means WC "water closet" and is used in many countries, 

Este letrero significa WC "inodoro de agua" y se usa en muchos países,

but no one really says: "Where is a watercloset?" 

pero nadie dice realmente: "¿Dónde hay un inodoro?"

In Great Britain people say “Where is the toilet?” 

En Gran Bretaña la gente dice "¿Dónde está el baño?"

Or “Where is the loo?” And in the US people say 

O "¿Dónde está el baño?" Y en Estados Unidos la gente dice

“Where is the bathroom?”. If you ask someone in the US:  

"¿Dónde está el baño?". Si le preguntas a alguien en los EE. UU.:

“Where is the toilet?”, it’s gonna sound kind of rude, 

"¿Dónde está el inodoro?" , Sonará un poco grosero,

or people would say: “It’s in the bathroom”.

o la gente dirá: "Está en el baño".

Number 32 is a large building  

El número 32 es un edificio grande

where you can leave a car for a period of time. 

donde puedes dejar un coche durante un tiempo.

It’s a parking garage in the US and a car park in Great Britain.

Es un estacionamiento en los EE. UU. y un estacionamiento en Gran Bretaña.

And the last but not the least one is the last letter in the alphabet. 

Y la última, pero no menos importante, es la última letra del alfabeto.

Zee in American English, and Zed in British English.

Zee en inglés americano y Zed en inglés británico.
