British VS American. 33 Vocabulary Differences

Have you ever wondered how different are  American English and British English?

Today I’m gonna tell you 33 vocabulary differences 

Oggi ti parlerò di 33 differenze di vocabolario

between American English and British English. They have a huge number of

words for the same things and today we’re gonna learn them.

Let’s start with the food and drinks

Cominciamo con il cibo e le bevande

The first one is A sweet thing made of colored sugar. 

Il primo è Una cosa dolce fatta di zucchero colorato.

It’s often sold at fairs and festivals. In Britain people call it Candy floss 

Viene spesso venduto a fiere e festival. In Gran Bretagna la gente lo chiama zucchero filato

in the US American people call it cotton candy.

negli Stati Uniti gli americani lo chiamano zucchero filato.

The second one is drinks that contain dissolved carbon dioxide. 

Il secondo sono le bevande che contengono anidride carbonica disciolta.

Americans call them pop drinks or soda and in Great Britain they NEVER  

Gli americani li chiamano pop drink o soda e in Gran Bretagna non lo

call it soda or pop, they say Fizzy drinks. 

chiamano MAI   soda o pop, dicono bevande gassate.

By the way, I never consume any carbonated drinks because they contain lots of sugar.

A proposito, non consumo mai bevande gassate perché contengono molto zucchero.

Number 3 is 

Il numero 3 è

a kind of bread made of flour that  is partly milled from whole grains.

un tipo di pane fatto di farina in parte macinata da cereali integrali.

In the US it’s called whole wheat bread and in Great Britain they usually say Brown bread.

Negli Stati Uniti si chiama pane integrale e in Gran Bretagna di solito si dice pane integrale.

The next one is a type of milk that is about 3.5 percent fat. 

Il prossimo è un tipo di latte che contiene circa il 3,5% di grassi.

In American English it’s usually called whole milk. In Great Britain it’s full fat milk.

In inglese americano di solito si chiama latte intero. In Gran Bretagna è il latte intero.

Number 5 is – peppers, 

Il numero 5 è : peperoni,

this is how Americans call it. And British say bell peppers.

così lo chiamano gli americani. E gli inglesi dicono peperoni.

The next one is a store  that sells food and products. 

Il prossimo è un negozio che vende cibo e prodotti.

Americans use a grocery store. 

Gli americani usano un negozio di alimentari.

Whereas in Great Britain they  use the supermarket or the shop.

Mentre in Gran Bretagna usano il supermercato o il negozio.

Also the store where you can buy some  alcohol, a bottle of wine or whiskey, 

Anche il negozio in cui puoi acquistare alcolici, una bottiglia di vino o whisky,

it’s called ABC STORE in the United States. Alcoholic beverage control states, 

si chiama ABC STORE negli Stati Uniti. Stati di controllo delle bevande alcoliche, stati degli Stati

US states controlling the sale  of alcoholic beverages, and 

Uniti che controllano la vendita di bevande alcoliche e

in the United Kingdom that kind  of stores is called off-licence. 

nel Regno Unito questo tipo di negozi è chiamato off-licence.

These are extremely different names.

Questi sono nomi estremamente diversi.

Number 8 What do you think? 

Numero 8 Cosa ne pensi?

This is a case of beer in American English. The British call it 24 pack.

Questo è un caso di birra in inglese americano. Gli inglesi lo chiamano confezione da 24.

This thing is used by  customers at the grocery store, 

Questa cosa viene utilizzata dai clienti al supermercato,

where they put the items they wanna buy. In the Us people call it  

dove mettono gli articoli che vogliono acquistare. Negli Stati Uniti la gente lo chiama

shopping cart or just cart. British people say “trolley”. 

carrello della spesa o semplicemente carrello. Gli inglesi dicono "trolley".

Now let’s compare some clothes and footwear Number 10 is a pair of trousers with an  

Ora confrontiamo alcuni vestiti e calzature Il numero 10 è un paio di pantaloni con un

extra piece of cloth that covers the chest,  

pezzo di stoffa in più che copre il petto

and is held in place by a strap over each shoulder. In American English people use the word overalls. 

ed è tenuto in posizione da una cinghia su ogni spalla. Nell'inglese americano le persone usano la parola tuta.

And the British say dungarees.

E gli inglesi dicono salopette.

Number eleven. When I go swimming, diving or surfing,  

Numero undici. Quando vado a nuotare, fare immersioni o fare surf,

I put on my…swimsuit

metto il mio... costume da bagno.

Also Americans say a bathing suit. And one piece is a slang 

Anche gli americani dicono costume da bagno. E one piece è una

word for this type of clothing. British people call it a swimming costume.

parola gergale per questo tipo di abbigliamento. Gli inglesi lo chiamano costume da bagno.

Number twelve. There is an interesting word in American English 

Numero dodici. C'è una parola interessante nell'inglese americano

to call a type of underwear, with  no sleeves, usually made of cotton, 

per chiamare un tipo di biancheria intima, senza maniche, solitamente di cotone,

that covers the upper part of the body: a wife beater.

che copre la parte superiore del corpo: a wife beater.

When I heard this word for the  first time I was so confused, 

Quando ho sentito questa parola per la prima volta ero così confuso,

because I understood a literal meaning: a man who beats his wife – a wife beater.

perché ho capito un significato letterale: un uomo che picchia sua moglie – un picchiatore di moglie. Gli

British people call this thing “a vest”.

inglesi chiamano questa cosa "un giubbotto".

It often rains in Great Britain and people wear their 

Piove spesso in Gran Bretagna e le persone indossano i loro

wellies or welly boots,

stivali di gomma o di gomma,

and when it rains in the US  people put on their rain boots.

e quando piove negli Stati Uniti le persone indossano gli stivali da pioggia.

Number fourteen. Do you know what  

Numero quattordici. Sai come

is this type of open shoes called? In Great Britain they say flip flops,

si chiama questo tipo di scarpe aperte? In Gran Bretagna si dice infradito,

and in the US they also say flip flops.

negli Stati Uniti si dice anche infradito.

The next one is running shoes or sneakers in America,

Il prossimo sono le scarpe da corsa o da ginnastica in America

and trainers in Great Britain. Americans never use trainers.

e le scarpe da ginnastica in Gran Bretagna. Gli americani non usano mai le scarpe da ginnastica. Il

Number sixteen is a wide road for fast moving traffic. 

numero sedici è una strada larga per il traffico in rapido movimento.

In the US it’s highway or interstate, and in British English they NEVER say  

Negli Stati Uniti è autostrada o interstatale, e in inglese britannico non si dice MAI

highway or interstate, they say motorway.

autostrada o interstatale, si dice autostrada.

The next one is a path with a hard surface on both sides of a road.

Il prossimo è un sentiero con una superficie dura su entrambi i lati di una strada.

In Great Britain people say "pavement". And the Americans say "sidewalk".

In Gran Bretagna si dice "pavement". E gli americani dicono "marciapiede". Il

Number eighteen is a cover for a bed,  

numero diciotto è una coperta per un letto,

that is filled with a soft warm material.

che è riempita con un materiale morbido e caldo.

In Great Britain it’s called "a duvet", In the US people say "a comforter".

In Gran Bretagna si chiama "a duvet", negli Stati Uniti si dice "a comforter".

The next one is a set of rooms on one floor of a large building.

Il prossimo è un insieme di stanze su un piano di un grande edificio.

In Great Britain people say "a flat", 

In Gran Bretagna si dice "a flat",

And in America everyone calls it "apartment", Americans never say "the flat".

e in America tutti lo chiamano "apartment", gli americani non dicono mai "the flat". Il

Number twenty is a shop where you can buy medicines. 

numero venti è un negozio dove puoi comprare medicine.

In Great Britain it’s a chemist, In the US this is called a drugstore.

In Gran Bretagna è un chimico, negli Stati Uniti si chiama drugstore.

When I hear the word "a chemist", I think of a person who studies chemistry, 

Quando sento la parola "un chimico", penso a una persona che studia chimica

or a scientist who works with chemicals. "A drugstore" is more understandable to me.

o a uno scienziato che lavora con le sostanze chimiche. "Una farmacia" è più comprensibile per me.

Number twenty one. Do you know how do Americans call Mc Donalds? 

Numero ventuno. Sai come gli americani chiamano Mc Donalds?

It depends on the area, but in the most parts of the US

Dipende dalla zona, ma nella maggior parte degli Stati Uniti la

people call it Mickey D’s. In GB people say Mackeys.

gente lo chiama Mickey D's. In GB si dice Mackey.

The next one is 1 dollar coin – a buck – one buck,  

Il prossimo è una moneta da 1 dollaro - un dollaro - un dollaro,

two bucks, three bucks. And in Great Britain  

due dollari, tre dollari. E in Gran Bretagna

they have pounds. A pound is called "a quid".

hanno le sterline. Una sterlina si chiama "una sterlina".

Number 23. Where would an American go to fill up their car? 

Numero 23. Dove andrebbe un americano a fare il pieno alla macchina?

To the gas station, of course, and a Brit would go to a petrol station.

Alla stazione di servizio, ovviamente, e un inglese andrebbe a una stazione di servizio.

The next one is hair which is cut 

Il prossimo sono i capelli tagliati

so that it hangs over your forehead. 

in modo che ricadano sulla fronte. Gli

British people say "fringe". And Americans use the word "bangs".

inglesi dicono "frangia". E gli americani usano la parola "frangia". Il

Number 25 is a large truck

numero 25 è un grande camion

that is made in two separate sections. In American English it’s called a tractor-trailer, 

realizzato in due sezioni separate. In inglese americano si chiama trattore-rimorchio,

and in GB they call it a lorry.

e in GB lo chiamano camion.

The next word is a party before someone gets married. 

La parola successiva è una festa prima che qualcuno si sposi.

In Great Britain people say a hen do or a stag do, or a hen night.

In Gran Bretagna si dice addio al nubilato o addio al celibato, o addio al nubilato.

In America they call it a bachelor party 

In America lo chiamano addio al celibato

for a man who invites only his male friends, 

per un uomo che invita solo i suoi amici maschi

and a bachelorette party for a woman and her female friends.

e addio al nubilato per una donna e le sue amiche.

The next one is a sofa or a settee in the UK 

Il prossimo è un divano o un divano nel Regno Unito

and a couch in the United States. In Britain people never use a couch 

e un divano negli Stati Uniti. In Gran Bretagna le persone non usano mai un divano

when they mean this thing.

quando intendono questa cosa. Il

Number twenty eight is a large area covered with trees. 

numero ventotto è una vasta area coperta di alberi.

In American English it’s a forest, And the British say the Woods. 

In inglese americano è una foresta, e gli inglesi dicono i boschi.

For an American 

Per un americano

the woods sound kind of old-fashioned. They really rarely use this word.

i legni suonano un po' antiquati. Usano davvero raramente questa parola.

A check or a bill is commonly  used in American English. 

Un assegno o una banconota è comunemente usato nell'inglese americano.

In Britain people say a check. 

In Gran Bretagna si dice assegno.

But there’s a difference in  meaning in American English: 

Ma c'è una differenza di significato nell'inglese americano:

A bill is an invoice stating what you have bought and asking for payment. 

una fattura è una fattura che indica ciò che hai acquistato e richiede il pagamento.

A check is a form of payment needed to pay the bill.

Un assegno è una forma di pagamento necessaria per pagare il conto.

Number 30 is small paper tubes filled with tobacco, 

Il numero 30 è piccoli tubi di carta pieni di tabacco,

that people smoke: cigarettes, 

che la gente fuma: sigarette,

smokes or ciggies in American English, And the British also say cigarettes,  

fumi o ciggies in inglese americano, e gli inglesi dicono anche sigarette,

ciggies or fags. They never use smokes.

ciggies o fags. Non usano mai fumi.

Please remember that smoking is dangerous.

Ricorda che fumare è pericoloso.

Americans say bathroom or restroom, which is usually used for public places.

Gli americani dicono bagno o toilette, che di solito viene utilizzato per i luoghi pubblici.

In Great Britain it’s the toilet, and they also often use the slang word the loo.

In Gran Bretagna è la toilette, e spesso usano anche la parola gergale the loo. Gli

British people say that a bathroom is a room with a bath and a shower.

inglesi dicono che un bagno è una stanza con vasca e doccia.

This sign means WC "water closet" and is used in many countries, 

Questo segno significa WC "gabinetto" ed è usato in molti paesi,

but no one really says: "Where is a watercloset?" 

ma nessuno dice davvero: "Dov'è un water?"

In Great Britain people say “Where is the toilet?” 

In Gran Bretagna si dice "Dov'è il bagno?"

Or “Where is the loo?” And in the US people say 

O "Dov'è il gabinetto?" E negli Stati Uniti la gente dice

“Where is the bathroom?”. If you ask someone in the US:  

"Dov'è il bagno?". Se chiedi a qualcuno negli Stati Uniti:

“Where is the toilet?”, it’s gonna sound kind of rude, 

"Dov'è il bagno?", suonerà un po' maleducato,

or people would say: “It’s in the bathroom”.

o la gente dirà: "È nel bagno". Il

Number 32 is a large building  

numero 32 è un grande edificio

where you can leave a car for a period of time. 

dove puoi lasciare un'auto per un certo periodo di tempo.

It’s a parking garage in the US and a car park in Great Britain.

È un garage negli Stati Uniti e un parcheggio in Gran Bretagna.

And the last but not the least one is the last letter in the alphabet. 

E l'ultima ma non meno importante è l'ultima lettera dell'alfabeto.

Zee in American English, and Zed in British English.

Zee in inglese americano e Zed in inglese britannico.
