British VS American. 33 Vocabulary Differences

Have you ever wondered how different are  American English and British English? 

미국식 영어와 영국식 영어가 얼마나 다른지 궁금한 적이 있나요?

Today I’m gonna tell you 33 vocabulary differences 

오늘은

between American English and British English. They have a huge number of  

미국식 영어와 영국식 영어의 33가지 어휘 차이를 알려드리겠습니다. 그들은 같은 것에 대한 엄청난 수의 단어를 가지고

words for the same things and today we’re gonna learn them.

있으며 오늘 우리는 그것들을 배울 것입니다.

Let’s start with the food and drinks

음식과 음료부터 시작하겠습니다.

The first one is A sweet thing made of colored sugar. 

첫 번째는 유색 설탕으로 만든 달콤한 것입니다.

It’s often sold at fairs and festivals. In Britain people call it Candy floss 

그것은 종종 박람회와 축제에서 판매됩니다. 영국에서는 솜사탕이라고 하고

in the US American people call it cotton candy.

미국에서는 솜사탕이라고 합니다.

The second one is drinks that contain dissolved carbon dioxide. 

두 번째는 용해된 이산화탄소가 포함된 음료입니다.

Americans call them pop drinks or soda and in Great Britain they NEVER  

미국인들은 그것을 팝 음료 또는 소다라고 부르며 영국에서는 절대

call it soda or pop, they say Fizzy drinks. 

소다 또는 팝이라고 부르지 않고 탄산 음료라고 합니다.

By the way, I never consume any carbonated drinks because they contain lots of sugar.

참고로 탄산음료는 설탕이 많이 들어있어서 절대 안먹어요.

Number 3 is 

3번은

a kind of bread made of flour that  is partly milled from whole grains.

통곡물을 부분적으로 빻은 밀가루로 만든 빵의 일종입니다.

In the US it’s called whole wheat bread and in Great Britain they usually say Brown bread.

미국에서는 통밀빵, 영국에서는 통밀빵이라고 합니다.

The next one is a type of milk that is about 3.5 percent fat. 

다음 우유는 지방이 약 3.5%인 우유입니다.

In American English it’s usually called whole milk. In Great Britain it’s full fat milk.

미국식 영어로는 whole milk라고 합니다. 영국에서는 전 지방 우유입니다.

Number 5 is – peppers, 

5번은 - 고추,

this is how Americans call it. And British say bell peppers.

미국인들은 이렇게 부릅니다. 그리고 영국인은 피망을 말합니다.

The next one is a store  that sells food and products. 

다음은 음식과 제품을 판매하는 상점입니다.

Americans use a grocery store. 

미국인들은 식료품점을 이용합니다.

Whereas in Great Britain they  use the supermarket or the shop.

영국에서는 슈퍼마켓이나 상점을 이용합니다.

Also the store where you can buy some  alcohol, a bottle of wine or whiskey, 

또한 술, 와인 한 병 또는 위스키를 살 수 있는 가게를

it’s called ABC STORE in the United States. Alcoholic beverage control states, 

미국에서는 ABC STORE라고 합니다. 주류 통제 주,

US states controlling the sale  of alcoholic beverages, and 

미국에서는 주류 판매를 통제 하고

in the United Kingdom that kind  of stores is called off-licence. 

영국에서는 그런 종류 의 상점을 면허 취소라고 합니다.

These are extremely different names.

이들은 매우 다른 이름입니다.

Number 8 What do you think? 

8번 어떻게 생각해?

This is a case of beer in American English. The British call it 24 pack.

미국식 영어로 된 맥주의 경우입니다. 영국인들은 그것을 24 팩이라고 부릅니다.

This thing is used by  customers at the grocery store, 

이 물건은 식료품점에서 고객이

where they put the items they wanna buy. In the Us people call it  

사고 싶은 물건을 넣는 곳에서 사용합니다. 미국에서는

shopping cart or just cart. British people say “trolley”. 

장바구니라고 부르거나 그냥 장바구니라고 부릅니다. 영국 사람들은 "트롤리"라고 합니다.

Now let’s compare some clothes and footwear Number 10 is a pair of trousers with an  

이제 몇 가지 옷과 신발을 비교해 봅시다. 10번은

extra piece of cloth that covers the chest,  

가슴을 덮는 여분의 천 조각이 있는 바지이며,

and is held in place by a strap over each shoulder. In American English people use the word overalls. 

각 어깨에 끈으로 고정되어 있습니다. 미국 영어에서는 작업복이라는 단어를 사용합니다.

And the British say dungarees.

그리고 영국인들은 바지를 말합니다.

Number eleven. When I go swimming, diving or surfing,  

11번. 나는 수영, 다이빙, 서핑을 할 때,

I put on my…swimsuit

수영복을 입습니다.

Also Americans say a bathing suit. And one piece is a slang 

또한 미국인들은 수영복을 말합니다. 원피스는

word for this type of clothing. British people call it a swimming costume.

이런 종류의 옷을 가리키는 속어입니다. 영국 사람들은 그것을 수영복이라고 부릅니다.

Number twelve. There is an interesting word in American English 

12번. 미국 영어에는

to call a type of underwear, with  no sleeves, usually made of cotton, 

소매가 없고 일반적으로 면으로 만들어지며 상반신을 덮는 일종의 속옷을 부르는 흥미로운 단어가 있습니다.

that covers the upper part of the body: a wife beater.

아내를 때리는 사람입니다.

When I heard this word for the  first time I was so confused, 

이 단어를 처음 들었을 때 너무 혼란스러웠습니다.

because I understood a literal meaning: a man who beats his wife – a wife beater.

문자 그대로의 의미를 이해했기 때문입니다. 아내를 때리는 남자 – 아내를 때리는 사람.

British people call this thing “a vest”.

영국 사람들은 이것을 "조끼"라고 부릅니다.

It often rains in Great Britain and people wear their 

영국에서는 비가 자주 내리고 사람들은

wellies or welly boots,

웰리 또는 웰리 부츠를 신고,

and when it rains in the US  people put on their rain boots.

미국에서는 비가 올 때 레인부츠를 신습니다.

Number fourteen. Do you know what  

14번.

is this type of open shoes called? In Great Britain they say flip flops,

이런 유형의 오픈 슈즈가 무엇인지 아세요? 영국에서는 플립플롭이라고

and in the US they also say flip flops.

하고 미국에서는 플립플롭이라고도 합니다.

The next one is running shoes or sneakers in America,

다음은 미국의 운동화나 운동화,

and trainers in Great Britain. Americans never use trainers.

영국의 운동화입니다. 미국인들은 트레이너를 절대 사용하지 않습니다.

Number sixteen is a wide road for fast moving traffic. 

16번은 빠르게 움직이는 차량을 위한 넓은 도로입니다.

In the US it’s highway or interstate, and in British English they NEVER say  

미국에서는 고속도로 또는 주간 고속도로 이며 영국 영어에서는

highway or interstate, they say motorway.

고속도로 또는 주간 고속도로라고 말하지 않고 고속도로라고 말합니다.

The next one is a path with a hard surface on both sides of a road.

다음은 도로 양쪽에 딱딱한 표면이 있는 길입니다.

In Great Britain people say "pavement". And the Americans say "sidewalk".

영국에서는 사람들이 "포장"이라고 말합니다. 그리고 미국인들은 "보도"라고 말합니다.

Number eighteen is a cover for a bed,  

18번은

that is filled with a soft warm material.

부드럽고 따뜻한 소재로 채워진 침대 커버입니다.

In Great Britain it’s called "a duvet", In the US people say "a comforter".

영국에서는 "이불"이라고 하고 미국에서는 "이불"이라고 합니다.

The next one is a set of rooms on one floor of a large building.

다음은 큰 건물의 한 층에 있는 방 세트입니다.

In Great Britain people say "a flat", 

영국에서는 사람들이 '플랫'이라고

And in America everyone calls it "apartment", Americans never say "the flat".

하고 미국에서는 모두 '아파트'라고 부르지만 미국인들은 절대 '플랫'이라고 말하지 않습니다.

Number twenty is a shop where you can buy medicines. 

20번은 약을 살 수 있는 가게입니다.

In Great Britain it’s a chemist, In the US this is called a drugstore.

영국에서는 약사, 미국에서는 약국이라고 합니다.

When I hear the word "a chemist", I think of a person who studies chemistry, 

'화학자'라는 단어를 들으면 화학을 공부하는 사람

or a scientist who works with chemicals. "A drugstore" is more understandable to me.

이나 화학 물질을 다루는 과학자를 생각합니다. "약국"이 더 이해하기 쉽습니다.

Number twenty one. Do you know how do Americans call Mc Donalds? 

21번. 미국인들이 맥도날드를 어떻게 부르는지 아세요?

It depends on the area, but in the most parts of the US

지역에 따라 다르지만 대부분의 미국

people call it Mickey D’s. In GB people say Mackeys.

사람들은 미키 D's라고 부릅니다. GB에서는 Mackeys라고 합니다.

The next one is 1 dollar coin – a buck – one buck,  

다음은 1달러 동전 – 1달러 – 1달러,

two bucks, three bucks. And in Great Britain  

2달러, 3달러입니다. 그리고 영국에서는

they have pounds. A pound is called "a quid".

파운드가 있습니다. 파운드를 "퀴드"라고 합니다.

Number 23. Where would an American go to fill up their car? 

23번. 미국인은 차에 기름을 채우기 위해 어디로 가야 할까요?

To the gas station, of course, and a Brit would go to a petrol station.

물론 주유소에 가면 영국인은 주유소에 갈 것입니다.

The next one is hair which is cut 

다음은 이마 위로 늘어뜨리도록 자른 머리카락입니다

so that it hangs over your forehead. 

.

British people say "fringe". And Americans use the word "bangs".

영국 사람들은 "fringe"라고 합니다. 그리고 미국인들은 "bangs"라는 단어를 사용합니다.

Number 25 is a large truck

25번은

that is made in two separate sections. In American English it’s called a tractor-trailer, 

두 개의 별도 섹션으로 만들어진 대형 트럭입니다. 미국 영어에서는 트랙터 트레일러라고

and in GB they call it a lorry.

하고 영국에서는 트럭이라고 합니다.

The next word is a party before someone gets married. 

다음 단어는 누군가가 결혼하기 전에 파티입니다.

In Great Britain people say a hen do or a stag do, or a hen night.

영국 사람들은 a hen do, a stag do 또는 hen night이라고 말합니다.

In America they call it a bachelor party 

미국에서는

for a man who invites only his male friends, 

남자 친구만 초대하는 남자의 총각 파티,

and a bachelorette party for a woman and her female friends.

여자 친구 와 여자 친구의 총각 파티라고 합니다.

The next one is a sofa or a settee in the UK 

다음은 영국의 소파나 긴 의자,

and a couch in the United States. In Britain people never use a couch 

미국의 소파입니다. 영국에서는 사람들이 이런 말을 할 때 절대 소파를 사용하지 않습니다

when they mean this thing.

Number twenty eight is a large area covered with trees. 

28번은 나무로 뒤덮인 넓은 지역입니다.

In American English it’s a forest, And the British say the Woods. 

미국식 영어로는 forest이고 영국식 영어에서는 the Woods라고 합니다.

For an American 

미국인에게

the woods sound kind of old-fashioned. They really rarely use this word.

숲은 구식으로 들립니다. 그들은 이 단어를 거의 사용하지 않습니다.

A check or a bill is commonly  used in American English. 

수표 또는 청구서는 일반적으로 미국 영어에서 사용됩니다.

In Britain people say a check. 

영국에서는 수표라고 합니다.

But there’s a difference in  meaning in American English: 

하지만 미국 영어의 의미에는 차이가 있습니다 .

A bill is an invoice stating what you have bought and asking for payment. 

청구서는 구매한 항목을 명시하고 결제를 요청하는 인보이스입니다.

A check is a form of payment needed to pay the bill.

수표는 청구서를 지불하는 데 필요한 결제 수단입니다.

Number 30 is small paper tubes filled with tobacco, 

30번은 담배로 채워진 작은 종이 튜브로

that people smoke: cigarettes, 

사람들이 피우는 담배입니다.

smokes or ciggies in American English, And the British also say cigarettes,  

미국식 영어로는 ciggies, smokes 또는 ciggies이며 영국에서는 담배,

ciggies or fags. They never use smokes.

ciggies 또는 fag라고도 합니다. 그들은 담배를 절대 사용하지 않습니다.

Please remember that smoking is dangerous.

흡연은 위험하다는 것을 기억하십시오.

Americans say bathroom or restroom, which is usually used for public places.

미국인들은 욕실이나 화장실을 말하는데 주로 공공장소에서 사용된다.

In Great Britain it’s the toilet, and they also often use the slang word the loo.

영국에서는 그것이 화장실이고 그들은 또한 종종 속어인 the loo를 사용합니다.

British people say that a bathroom is a room with a bath and a shower.

영국 사람들은 욕실을 욕조와 샤워기가 있는 방이라고 합니다.

This sign means WC "water closet" and is used in many countries, 

이 표지판은 WC "수세식 변소"를 의미하며 많은 국가에서 사용되지만

but no one really says: "Where is a watercloset?" 

실제로 "수세식 변소가 어디인가요?"라고 말하는 사람은 없습니다.

In Great Britain people say “Where is the toilet?” 

영국에서는 사람들이 “화장실이 어디에 있습니까?”라고 말합니다.

Or “Where is the loo?” And in the US people say 

또는 "화장실은 어디입니까?" 그리고 미국 사람들은

“Where is the bathroom?”. If you ask someone in the US:  

"화장실이 어디야?"라고 말합니다. 미국에 있는 누군가에게

“Where is the toilet?”, it’s gonna sound kind of rude, 

"화장실이 어디죠?"라고 묻는다면 무례하게 들릴 것입니다.

or people would say: “It’s in the bathroom”.

또는 사람들은 "화장실에 있어요"라고 말할 것입니다.

Number 32 is a large building  

32번은

where you can leave a car for a period of time. 

일정 시간 동안 차를 떠날 수 있는 큰 건물입니다.

It’s a parking garage in the US and a car park in Great Britain.

미국의 주차장과 영국의 주차장입니다.

And the last but not the least one is the last letter in the alphabet. 

그리고 마지막이지만 적어도 하나는 알파벳의 마지막 문자입니다.

Zee in American English, and Zed in British English.

미국식 영어는 Zee, 영국식 영어는 Zed입니다.
