British VS American. 33 Vocabulary Differences

Have you ever wondered how different are  American English and British English?

Today I’m gonna tell you 33 vocabulary differences

between American English and British English. They have a huge number of  

、アメリカ英語とイギリス英語の 33 の語彙の違いについて説明します。

words for the same things and today we’re gonna learn them.

同じことを表す言葉がたくさんあります 。今日はそれらを学びましょう。

Let’s start with the food and drinks

まずは食べ物と飲み物から

The first one is A sweet thing made of colored sugar. 

1つ目は 、色砂糖でできた甘いもの。

It’s often sold at fairs and festivals. In Britain people call it Candy floss 

フェアやお祭りでよく売られています。 英国

in the US American people call it cotton candy.

では綿菓子と呼ばれ、米国では綿菓子と呼ばれます。

The second one is drinks that contain dissolved carbon dioxide. 

2つ目は 、炭酸ガスが溶けた飲み物です。

Americans call them pop drinks or soda and in Great Britain they NEVER  

アメリカ人はそれらをポップ ドリンクまたはソーダと呼びますが 、イギリスでは決して

call it soda or pop, they say Fizzy drinks. 

ソーダまたはポップとは呼ばず、 フィジー ドリンクと言います。

By the way, I never consume any carbonated drinks because they contain lots of sugar.

ちなみに、炭酸飲料 は糖分が多いので飲みません。

Number 3 is 

番号 3 は

a kind of bread made of flour that  is partly milled from whole grains.

、 一部が全粒粉から粉砕された小麦粉で作られた一種のパンです。

In the US it’s called whole wheat bread and in Great Britain they usually say Brown bread.

アメリカでは全粒粉パン 、イギリスではブラウンブレッドと呼ばれています。

The next one is a type of milk that is about 3.5 percent fat. 

次は、 脂肪分が約3.5パーセントのタイプの牛乳です。

In American English it’s usually called whole milk. In Great Britain it’s full fat milk.

アメリカ英語では通常、全乳と呼ばれます。 イギリスでは全脂肪乳です。

Number 5 is – peppers, 

5 番 はピーマンです。

this is how Americans call it. And British say bell peppers.

これはアメリカ人の呼び方です。 そしてイギリス人はピーマンと言います。

The next one is a store  that sells food and products. 

次は 食品や商品を販売する店舗です。

Americans use a grocery store. 

アメリカ人は食料品店を利用します。

Whereas in Great Britain they  use the supermarket or the shop.

イギリスで はスーパーマーケットやショップを利用します。

Also the store where you can buy some  alcohol, a bottle of wine or whiskey, 

また、 アルコール、ワイン、ウィスキーのボトルを購入できる

it’s called ABC STORE in the United States. Alcoholic beverage control states, 

店は、米国では ABC STORE と呼ばれています。 アルコール飲料規制の州、

US states controlling the sale  of alcoholic beverages, and 

米国の州はアルコール飲料の販売を規制して

in the United Kingdom that kind  of stores is called off-licence. 

おり、英国ではこの種 の店はライセンス認証外と呼ばれています。

These are extremely different names.

これらは非常に異なる名前です。

Number 8 What do you think? 

8位 どう思いますか？

This is a case of beer in American English. The British call it 24 pack.

これは、アメリカ英語のビールの場合です。 イギリス人はそれを24パックと呼んでいます。

This thing is used by  customers at the grocery store, 

これは 、食料品店で顧客

where they put the items they wanna buy. In the Us people call it  

が購入したい商品を置いて使用するものです。 米国では、

shopping cart or just cart. British people say “trolley”. 

ショッピング カートまたは単にカートと呼ばれます。 イギリス人は「トロリー」と言います。

Now let’s compare some clothes and footwear Number 10 is a pair of trousers with an

extra piece of cloth that covers the chest,  

and is held in place by a strap over each shoulder. In American English people use the word overalls.

And the British say dungarees.

そしてイギリス人はダンガリーと言います。

Number eleven. When I go swimming, diving or surfing,

I put on my…swimsuit

Also Americans say a bathing suit. And one piece is a slang 

は、水着を着ます。また、アメリカ人は水着とも言います。 ワンピースは、

word for this type of clothing. British people call it a swimming costume.

Number twelve. There is an interesting word in American English 

十二番。 アメリカ英語には、上半身を覆う

to call a type of underwear, with  no sleeves, usually made of cotton, 

、通常は綿でできた、袖のない一種の下着を呼ぶ興味深い言葉があり

that covers the upper part of the body: a wife beater.

When I heard this word for the  first time I was so confused, 

この言葉を聞いたとき 、とても混乱しまし

because I understood a literal meaning: a man who beats his wife – a wife beater.

た。文字通りの意味を理解していたから です。妻を殴る男、つまり妻を殴る男です。

British people call this thing “a vest”.

イギリス人はこれを「ベスト」と呼んでいます。

It often rains in Great Britain and people wear their 

英国ではよく雨が降り、人々は

wellies or welly boots,

長靴や長靴を履きます。

and when it rains in the US  people put on their rain boots.

米国で雨が降ると、 長靴を履きます。

Number fourteen. Do you know what  

十四番。

is this type of open shoes called? In Great Britain they say flip flops,

このタイプのオープン シューズを何と呼ぶか知っていますか？ イギリスではフリップフロップと言います

and in the US they also say flip flops.

が、アメリカでもフリップフロップと言います。

The next one is running shoes or sneakers in America,

次は 、アメリカではランニングシューズやスニーカー、

and trainers in Great Britain. Americans never use trainers.

イギリスではトレーナーです。 アメリカ人は決してトレーナーを使いません。

Number sixteen is a wide road for fast moving traffic. 

16 番 は、車が高速で移動するための幅の広い道路です。

In the US it’s highway or interstate, and in British English they NEVER say  

米国ではハイウェイまたは州間高速道路です。 イギリス英語では、ハイウェイやインターステートとは決して言い

highway or interstate, they say motorway.

ません。高速道路と言います。

The next one is a path with a hard surface on both sides of a road.

次は 道の両側が固い道。

In Great Britain people say "pavement". And the Americans say "sidewalk".

イギリスでは「舗装」と言います。 そしてアメリカ人は「歩道」と言います。

Number eighteen is a cover for a bed,  

18 番はベッドのカバーで、中

that is filled with a soft warm material.

は柔らかく暖かい素材で覆われています。

In Great Britain it’s called "a duvet", In the US people say "a comforter".

イギリスでは「羽毛布団」 、アメリカでは「掛け布団」と言います。

The next one is a set of rooms on one floor of a large building.

次は 大きなビルのワンフロアにある部屋のセットです。

In Great Britain people say "a flat", 

英国では「a flat」と

And in America everyone calls it "apartment", Americans never say "the flat".

言い、アメリカでは誰もが「アパート」と呼びますが、 アメリカ人は決して「the flat」とは言いません。

Number twenty is a shop where you can buy medicines. 

20番は 薬が買えるお店です。

In Great Britain it’s a chemist, In the US this is called a drugstore.

イギリスでは化学 者、アメリカではドラッグストアと呼ばれています。

When I hear the word "a chemist", I think of a person who studies chemistry, 

「化学者」という言葉を聞くと、 化学を研究する人、

or a scientist who works with chemicals. "A drugstore" is more understandable to me.

または化学物質を扱う科学者を思い浮かべます。 「ドラッグストア」の方が分かりやすいです。

Number twenty one. Do you know how do Americans call Mc Donalds? 

21 番。 アメリカ人がマクドナルドをどう呼ぶか知っていますか?

It depends on the area, but in the most parts of the US

地域によって異なりますが、米国のほとんどの地域では、

people call it Mickey D’s. In GB people say Mackeys.

ミッキー D と呼ばれています。 GB では Mackeys と言います。

The next one is 1 dollar coin – a buck – one buck,  

次は 1 ドル硬貨 – 1 ドル – 1 ドル、

two bucks, three bucks. And in Great Britain  

2 ドル、3 ドル。 そして英国

they have pounds. A pound is called "a quid".

ではポンドがあります。 ポンドは「a quid」と呼ばれます。

Number 23. Where would an American go to fill up their car? 

No.23. アメリカ人は車に給油するためにどこに行きますか?

To the gas station, of course, and a Brit would go to a petrol station.

もちろん 、ガソリンスタンドに行きます。英国人はガソリンスタンドに行きます。

The next one is hair which is cut 

次は

so that it hangs over your forehead. 

額にかかるようにカットされた髪です。

British people say "fringe". And Americans use the word "bangs".

イギリス人は「フリンジ」と言います。 そしてアメリカ人は「前髪」という言葉を使います。

Number 25 is a large truck

25 番は、

that is made in two separate sections. In American English it’s called a tractor-trailer, 

2 つの別々のセクションで製造された大型トラックです。 アメリカ英語では tractor-trailer と呼ばれ、イギリス

and in GB they call it a lorry.

では lorry と呼ばれます。

The next word is a party before someone gets married. 

次の単語は、 誰かが結婚する前のパーティーです。

In Great Britain people say a hen do or a stag do, or a hen night.

イギリスでは、ヘン・ドゥ、スタッグ・ドゥ、 またはヘン・ナイトと言います。

In America they call it a bachelor party 

アメリカ

for a man who invites only his male friends, 

では、男性が男性の友達だけを招待

and a bachelorette party for a woman and her female friends.

する場合はバチェラー パーティーと呼び、女性 と女性の友達を招待する場合はバチェロレッテ パーティーと呼びます。

The next one is a sofa or a settee in the UK 

次 は英国のソファまたは長椅子

and a couch in the United States. In Britain people never use a couch 

、米国のソファです。 英国では、この意味でカウチを使用することは決してありませ

when they mean this thing.

Number twenty eight is a large area covered with trees. 

28 番 は木々に覆われた広いエリアです。

In American English it’s a forest, And the British say the Woods. 

アメリカ英語では森 、イギリス人は森と言う.

For an American 

アメリカ人にとって

the woods sound kind of old-fashioned. They really rarely use this word.

、森は時代遅れに聞こえます。 彼らがこの言葉を使うことはめったにありません。

A check or a bill is commonly  used in American English. 

小切手または請求書は 、アメリカ英語で一般的に使用されます。

In Britain people say a check. 

イギリスでは小切手と言います。

But there’s a difference in  meaning in American English: 

しかし 、アメリカ英語では意味が異なり

A bill is an invoice stating what you have bought and asking for payment. 

ます。請求書とは、 購入したものを記載し、支払いを求める請求書です。

A check is a form of payment needed to pay the bill.

小切手は、請求書の支払いに 必要な支払い方法です。

Number 30 is small paper tubes filled with tobacco, 

番号 30 はタバコが入った小さな紙管であり

that people smoke: cigarettes, 

、人々が喫煙するものです:

smokes or ciggies in American English, And the British also say cigarettes,  

アメリカ英語ではタバコ、スモーク、または ciggies です。 また、イギリス人は、タバコ、

ciggies or fags. They never use smokes.

ciggies または fags とも言います。 彼らは決して煙を使いません。

Please remember that smoking is dangerous.

喫煙は危険ですのでご注意ください。

Americans say bathroom or restroom, which is usually used for public places.

アメリカ人はバスルームまたはトイレを言い、 通常は公共の場所で使用されます。

In Great Britain it’s the toilet, and they also often use the slang word the loo.

英国ではトイレであり、俗語の「トイレ」 もよく使用します。

British people say that a bathroom is a room with a bath and a shower.

イギリス人 は、バスルームとはバスタブとシャワーのある部屋だと言います。

This sign means WC "water closet" and is used in many countries, 

この標識はトイレの「水洗トイレ」を意味し 、多くの国で使用されていますが、

but no one really says: "Where is a watercloset?" 

「水洗トイレはどこですか?」と言う人はいません。

In Great Britain people say “Where is the toilet?” 

イギリスでは「トイレはどこ？」と言われます。

Or “Where is the loo?” And in the US people say 

または「トイレはどこですか？」 また、米国では

“Where is the bathroom?”. If you ask someone in the US:  

「トイレはどこですか?」と言われます。 米国で誰かに

“Where is the toilet?”, it’s gonna sound kind of rude, 

「トイレはどこですか?」と尋ねると、失礼に聞こえるか、「トイレにあります」

or people would say: “It’s in the bathroom”.

と答えるでしょう 。

Number 32 is a large building  

32 番地は大きな建物

where you can leave a car for a period of time. 

で、車をしばらく停めておくことができます。

It’s a parking garage in the US and a car park in Great Britain.

米国では駐車場、英国では駐車場 です。

And the last but not the least one is the last letter in the alphabet. 

そして、最後の 文字はアルファベットの最後の文字です。

Zee in American English, and Zed in British English.

アメリカ英語では Zee、 イギリス英語では Zed です。
