Present Perfect vs Present Perfect Continuous: Differences and Grammar Rules

Today we're going to talk about the difference

between the Present Perfect and the Present Perfect Continuous

I’m Kate and today we have a grammar lesson. Let’s take a look at these two sentences:

I have lived in the US for ten years and 

ده سال

I have been living in the US for ten years 

است که در ایالات متحده زندگی می‌کنم و  ده سال است که در ایالات متحده زندگی می‌کنم

Do they mean the same thing or  do they have different meanings? 

آیا معنی آنها یکسان است یا معانی متفاوتی دارند؟

Let’s find out. The Present Perfect and  

بیایید دریابیم. Present Perfect

the Present Perfect Continuous can be used to talk about past actions which are still  

و Present Perfect Continuous می‌توانند برای صحبت در مورد اقدامات گذشته که هنوز

connected to the present. We can use both tenses to

describe finished and unfinished actions. Before we start talking about the differences

let’s remember how we form them. So the Present Perfect is formed with

have or has + the past participle

I have lived. The negative form

have or has + not + the past  participle: I have not lived.

And the question: have or has +  the subject + the past participle:

Have I lived? We use Present Perfect to

talk about past actions and we don’t know when  they’ve finished and it doesn’t even matter. 

صحبت در مورد اقدامات گذشته استفاده می‌کنیم و نمی‌دانیم چه زمانی آنها تمام شده‌اند و حتی مهم نیست.

The result of the action is more  important than the action itself. 

نتیجه عمل مهمتر از خود عمل است.

For example, I’ve spilled my juice. We are not interested what time exactly

it happened, but we talk about the result: I have spilled my juice. Please, give me a

I use the Present Perfect in question and ask YOU: Have you subscribed to my Youtube channel?

I’m really more interested  in the result of the action.

Now let’s remember how we form  the Present Perfect Continuous.

the Positive is have or has + been + verb – ing: 

مثبت is have or has + been + verb – ing:

I have been living The negative is 

I have been living منفی است

have or has + not + been + verb – ing: I have not been living 

have or has + not + been + فعل – ing: I have not been living

And the question: have or has + subject + been + verb – ing 

و سؤال: have یا has + فاعل + بود + فعل –

Have I been living ? So we use the Present Perfect  

آیا من زندگی کرده ام؟ بنابراین ما از Present Perfect

Continuous to talk about actions that started in  the past and has continued to the present moment  

Continuous برای صحبت در مورد اقداماتی استفاده می کنیم که در گذشته شروع شده اند و تا لحظه حال ادامه یافته اند

and maybe they will continue into the future. So I can say for example, 

و شاید در آینده نیز ادامه داشته باشند. بنابراین می‌توانم بگویم برای مثال،

I’ve been standing in front of the camera. It’s an unfinished action, 

من جلوی دوربین ایستاده‌ام. این یک اقدام ناتمام است،

it started in the past, and it has continued until right now,

and it’s going to continue into the future, and I hope you keep watching my lesson.

When we use The Present Perfect Continuous Tense we are more interested in action than the result. 

هنگامی که از زمان استمراری کامل استفاده می کنیم، بیشتر به عمل علاقه مندیم تا نتیجه.

Now I wanna focus on some exceptions. There are some stative verbs that  

اکنون می خواهم بر روی برخی استثناها تمرکز کنم. برخی از افعال ثابت وجود دارد

we cannot use in the continuous tense hate, like, love, want, wish, feel, know,  

که   نمی‌توانیم از آنها در زمان استمراری متنفر، مانند، عشق، خواستن، آرزو، احساس، دانستن،

need, hear, see, believe. You can say: I’ve heard the news 

نیاز، شنیدن، دیدن، باور کردن استفاده کنیم. می‌توانید بگویید: من اخبار را شنیده‌ام

But You cannot say I’ve been hearing the news. 

اما نمی‌توانید بگویید که من اخبار را می‌شنوم.

You can say: We’ve known each other for years. 

می توانید بگویید: ما سال ها همدیگر را می شناسیم.

You cannot say: We’ve been knowing each other for years. 

نمی توانید بگویید: ما سال هاست که همدیگر را می شناسیم.

That’s incorrect. Ok let me tell you

about the differences between the Present  Perfect and The Present Perfect Continuous. 

درباره تفاوت‌های Present Perfect و Present Perfect Continuous به شما بگویم.

Difference #1. The Present Perfect Continuous  describes an action that may continue  

تفاوت شماره 1 Present Perfect Continuous عملی را توصیف می‌کند که ممکن است ادامه یابد

whereas The Present Perfect describes  an activity that has been completed. 

در حالی که Present Perfect فعالیتی را توصیف می‌کند که تکمیل شده است.

For example: I’ve read a book (I finished reading a book) 

برای مثال: I’ve read a book (من خواندن یک کتاب را

I’ve been reading a book. (This means I’m still  

تمام کردم)  I’ve been reading a book. (این بدان معناست که من هنوز در حال

reading or I may go on reading the activity is NOT finished)  

خواندن هستم یا ممکن است به خواندن فعالیت ادامه دهم)

Difference #2. We use the Present Perfect  Continuous to emphasize the amount of time that  

تفاوت شماره 2. ما از Present Perfect Continuous برای تأکید بر مقدار زمانی که

has passed whereas the Present Perfect is used to  talk about how many times something has happened. 

گذشته است استفاده می کنیم، در حالی که Present Perfect برای صحبت در مورد چند بار اتفاق افتاده استفاده می شود.

I've been working on this project for a month.  (We're talking about the amount of time)

We've seen that movie three times. (We're talking  about how many times we've seen that movie)

I’ve been passing the grammar test for two  hours! (We're talking about the amount of time)

I’ve passed the grammar test six times (We're  talking about how many times I've passed the test) 

من شش بار امتحان گرامر را گذرانده ام ( در مورد اینکه چند بار امتحان را پس داده ام صحبت می کنیم)

Difference #3. We use the Present Perfect  to talk about unfinished constant activities 

تفاوت شماره 3. ما از Present Perfect برای صحبت در مورد فعالیت های ثابت ناتمام

and we use the Present Perfect Continuous  to talk about activities that are temporary.  

و از Present Perfect Continuous برای صحبت در مورد فعالیت هایی که موقتی هستند استفاده می کنیم.

Actions that are not usual. I’ve worked in the office for 10 years. 

اعمالی که معمول نیستند. من 10 سال در دفتر کار کردم.

I’m using the Present Perfect because the  action is unfinished and I still work there,  

من از Present Perfect استفاده می‌کنم زیرا عمل ناتمام است و هنوز در آنجا کار می‌کنم،

I go to my office every day to work. I’ve been working from home (I usually

In this case I mean the action  that started in the past,

it’s unfinished because I’m still working  at home but it’s a temporary situation.

Let’s have a look at the next example from the first part of our lesson.

I hope that it will be easier to  understand the differences in meaning.

I have lived in the US for ten years

and I have been living in the US for ten years

If I use the Present Perfect it’s a more constant situation, 

that means I’m not going to  change the place where I live,

and if I say it using the  Present Perfect Continuous 

می کنم. آن را با استفاده از Present Perfect

the focus is on the action; I’m still living here  

Continuous بگویید، تمرکز روی عمل است. من هنوز اینجا زندگی می کنم

but it makes you think that  it’s a temporary situation,

and it may change in the future and maybe I’d move somewhere else.

The next difference. We use the Present  Perfect and the Present Perfect Continuous

to express different kinds of results. I’ve painted my room. It looks so lovely! 

برای بیان انواع مختلف نتایج استفاده می‌کنیم. اتاقم را رنگ کرده ام خیلی دوست داشتنی به نظر می رسد!

We use the Present Perfect when the result  comes from the activity being finished. 

زمانی که نتیجه از فعالیت در حال اتمام است، از Present Perfect استفاده می‌کنیم.

The room looks lovely because I’ve painted it.  I’ve finished painting. The activity is completed. 

اتاق زیبا به نظر می رسد زیرا من آن را نقاشی کرده ام. من نقاشی را تمام کردم فعالیت به پایان رسیده است.

I’ve been painting my room, so I’m tired. We use the Present Perfect Continuous  

من اتاقم را رنگ کرده ام، بنابراین خسته هستم.

when the result comes from doing the activity. Why am I tired? 

وقتی نتیجه از انجام فعالیت حاصل می‌شود، از Present Perfect Continuous  استفاده می‌کنیم. چرا خسته ام؟

I’m tired of painting my room. There is another example: 

از رنگ کردن اتاقم خسته شدم مثال دیگری وجود دارد:

I’ve played a new game, so  I can tell you the rules. 

من یک بازی جدید انجام داده‌ام، بنابراین می‌توانم قوانین را به شما بگویم.

We use the Present Perfect when  the result comes from the activity 

زمانی که نتیجه از فعالیت می‌آید، از Present Perfect استفاده می‌کنیم.

I can tell you the game  rules because I’ve played it. 

می‌توانم قوانین بازی را به شما بگویم چون آن را بازی کرده‌ام.

I’ve been playing video games all  day, so I have a headache now. 

من تمام روز در حال انجام بازی‌های ویدیویی بودم، بنابراین اکنون سردرد دارم.

We use the Present Perfect Continuous when the  result comes from doing the activity itself: 

ما از Present Perfect Continuous زمانی استفاده می‌کنیم که نتیجه از انجام خود فعالیت به دست می‌آید:

I have a headache now because I’ve  been playing video games all day.

اکنون سردرد دارم زیرا تمام روز در حال انجام بازی‌های ویدیویی هستم.

But there is one important thing you should know: 

اما یک چیز مهم وجود دارد که باید بدانید:

with the verbs STUDY, TEACH and WORK in most cases there is no difference in meaning. 

با افعال STUDY، TEACH و WORK در بیشتر موارد تفاوتی در معنا وجود ندارد.

I’ve studied languages for five years. I’ve been studying languages for five years.

من پنج سال زبان خوانده ام. من پنج سال است که زبان می خوانم.

they mean the same thing

منظورشان همان چیزی است که

He’s been worked here for two weeks. He’s been working here for two weeks. 

او دو هفته است اینجا کار کرده است. او دو هفته است که اینجا کار می کند.

Once again, there is no difference in meaning.

بار دیگر تفاوتی در معنا وجود ندارد.

I’ve taught English since 2016. 

I’ve teached English from 2016.

I’ve been teaching English since 2016. And these sentences mean the same thing, too. 

I’ve been تدریس انگلیسی from 2016. و این جملات نیز به همین معنا هستند.
