Present Perfect vs Present Perfect Continuous: Differences and Grammar Rules

I’m Kate and today we have a grammar lesson. Let’s take a look at these two sentences:

I have lived in the US for ten years and 

Vivo negli Stati Uniti da dieci anni e

I have been living in the US for ten years 

Vivo negli Stati Uniti da dieci anni

Do they mean the same thing or  do they have different meanings? 

Significano la stessa cosa o hanno significati diversi?

Let’s find out. The Present Perfect and

the Present Perfect Continuous can be used to talk about past actions which are still

Have I lived? We use Present Perfect to

talk about past actions and we don’t know when  they’ve finished and it doesn’t even matter.

The result of the action is more  important than the action itself.

For example, I’ve spilled my juice. We are not interested what time exactly

it happened, but we talk about the result: I have spilled my juice. Please, give me a

Now let’s remember how we form  the Present Perfect Continuous.

the Positive is have or has + been + verb – ing: 

il Positivo è avere o ha + stato + verbo – ing:  ho

I have been living The negative is 

vissuto Il negativo è

have or has + not + been + verb – ing: I have not been living 

avere o ha + non + stato + verbo – ing: non ho vissuto  E

And the question: have or has + subject + been + verb – ing 

la domanda: avere o ha + soggetto + stato + verbo – ing  Ho

Have I been living ? So we use the Present Perfect  

vissuto ? Quindi usiamo il Present Perfect

Continuous to talk about actions that started in  the past and has continued to the present moment  

Continuous per parlare di azioni che sono iniziate nel  passato e sono continuate fino al momento presente

and maybe they will continue into the future. So I can say for example, 

e forse continueranno nel futuro. Quindi posso dire, ad esempio,

I’ve been standing in front of the camera. It’s an unfinished action, 

sono stato davanti alla telecamera. È un'azione incompiuta,

it started in the past, and it has continued until right now,

and it’s going to continue into the future, and I hope you keep watching my lesson.

When we use The Present Perfect Continuous Tense we are more interested in action than the result. 

Quando usiamo il Present Perfect Continuous Tense siamo più interessati all'azione che al risultato.

Now I wanna focus on some exceptions. There are some stative verbs that  

Ora voglio concentrarmi su alcune eccezioni. Ci sono alcuni verbi stativi che

we cannot use in the continuous tense hate, like, love, want, wish, feel, know,  

non possiamo usare nel tempo continuo hate, like, love, want, wish, feel, know,

need, hear, see, believe. You can say: I’ve heard the news 

need, listen, see, believe. Puoi dire: ho sentito la notizia,

But You cannot say I’ve been hearing the news. 

ma non puoi dire che ho sentito la notizia.

You can say: We’ve known each other for years. 

Puoi dire: ci conosciamo da anni.

You cannot say: We’ve been knowing each other for years. 

Non puoi dire: ci conosciamo da anni.

That’s incorrect. Ok let me tell you

Difference #1. The Present Perfect Continuous  describes an action that may continue

whereas The Present Perfect describes  an activity that has been completed. 

mentre il Present Perfect descrive un'attività che è stata completata.

For example: I’ve read a book (I finished reading a book) 

Ad esempio: ho letto un libro (ho finito di leggere un libro)

I’ve been reading a book. (This means I’m still  

ho letto un libro. (Ciò significa che sto ancora

reading or I may go on reading the activity is NOT finished)  

leggendo o potrei continuare a leggere l'attività NON è finita)

Difference #2. We use the Present Perfect  Continuous to emphasize the amount of time that

has passed whereas the Present Perfect is used to  talk about how many times something has happened. 

è trascorso, mentre il Present Perfect è usato per parlare di quante volte è successo qualcosa.

I've been working on this project for a month.  (We're talking about the amount of time) 

Sto lavorando a questo progetto da un mese. (Stiamo parlando della quantità di tempo)

We've seen that movie three times. (We're talking  about how many times we've seen that movie) 

Abbiamo visto quel film tre volte. (Stiamo parlando di quante volte abbiamo visto quel film)

I’ve been passing the grammar test for two  hours! (We're talking about the amount of time) 

Sto superando il test di grammatica da due ore! (Stiamo parlando della quantità di tempo)

I’ve passed the grammar test six times (We're  talking about how many times I've passed the test) 

Ho superato il test di grammatica sei volte (Stiamo parlando di quante volte ho superato il test)

Difference #3. We use the Present Perfect  to talk about unfinished constant activities 

Differenza n. Usiamo il Present Perfect per parlare di attività costanti non finite

and we use the Present Perfect Continuous  to talk about activities that are temporary.  

e usiamo il Present Perfect Continuous per parlare di attività che sono temporanee.

Actions that are not usual. I’ve worked in the office for 10 years. 

Azioni non usuali. Lavoro in ufficio da 10 anni.

I’m using the Present Perfect because the  action is unfinished and I still work there,  

Sto usando il Present Perfect perché l' azione è incompiuta e ci lavoro ancora,

I go to my office every day to work. I’ve been working from home (I usually  

vado ogni giorno nel mio ufficio per lavorare. Ho lavorato da casa (di solito

work in the office but recently I’ve been working  from home for the reason of pandemic situation) 

lavoro in ufficio ma recentemente ho lavorato da casa a causa della situazione pandemica)

In this case I mean the action  that started in the past,  

In questo caso intendo l'azione che è iniziata in passato,

it’s unfinished because I’m still working  at home but it’s a temporary situation. 

è incompiuta perché sono ancora lavorare a casa ma è una situazione temporanea.

Let’s have a look at the next example from the first part of our lesson.

I hope that it will be easier to  understand the differences in meaning.

I have lived in the US for ten years 

Vivo negli Stati Uniti da dieci anni

and I have been living in the US for ten years

If I use the Present Perfect it’s a more constant situation, 

Se uso il Present Perfect è una situazione più costante,

that means I’m not going to  change the place where I live, 

ciò significa che non cambierò il luogo in cui vivo

and if I say it using the  Present Perfect Continuous 

e se dillo usando il Present Perfect Continuous

the focus is on the action; I’m still living here  

il focus è sull'azione; Vivo ancora qui

but it makes you think that  it’s a temporary situation, 

ma ti fa pensare che sia una situazione temporanea

and it may change in the future and maybe I’d move somewhere else.

e potrebbe cambiare in futuro e forse mi trasferirei altrove.

The next difference. We use the Present  Perfect and the Present Perfect Continuous  

La prossima differenza. Usiamo il Present Perfect e il Present Perfect Continuous

to express different kinds of results. I’ve painted my room. It looks so lovely! 

per esprimere diversi tipi di risultati. Ho dipinto la mia stanza. Sembra così adorabile!

We use the Present Perfect when the result  comes from the activity being finished. 

Usiamo il Present Perfect quando il risultato deriva dal completamento dell'attività.

The room looks lovely because I’ve painted it.  I’ve finished painting. The activity is completed. 

La stanza sembra adorabile perché l'ho dipinta. Ho finito di dipingere. L'attività è completata.

I’ve been painting my room, so I’m tired. We use the Present Perfect Continuous  

Ho dipinto la mia stanza, quindi sono stanco. Usiamo il Present Perfect Continuous

when the result comes from doing the activity. Why am I tired? 

quando il risultato deriva dall'esecuzione dell'attività. Perché sono stanco?

I’m tired of painting my room. There is another example: 

Sono stanco di dipingere la mia stanza. C'è un altro esempio:

I’ve played a new game, so  I can tell you the rules.

We use the Present Perfect when  the result comes from the activity 

Usiamo il Present Perfect quando il risultato deriva dall'attività

I can tell you the game  rules because I’ve played it. 

Posso dirti le regole del gioco perché ci ho giocato.

I’ve been playing video games all  day, so I have a headache now. 

Ho giocato ai videogiochi tutto il giorno, quindi ora ho mal di testa.

We use the Present Perfect Continuous when the  result comes from doing the activity itself: 

Usiamo il Present Perfect Continuous quando il risultato deriva dall'esecuzione dell'attività stessa:

I have a headache now because I’ve  been playing video games all day.

ora ho mal di testa perché ho giocato ai videogiochi tutto il giorno.

But there is one important thing you should know: 

Ma c'è una cosa importante che dovresti sapere:

with the verbs STUDY, TEACH and WORK in most cases there is no difference in meaning. 

con i verbi STUDIA, INSEGNA e LAVORA nella maggior parte dei casi non c'è differenza di significato.

I’ve studied languages for five years. I’ve been studying languages for five years.

Studio lingue da cinque anni. Studio lingue da cinque anni.

they mean the same thing

significano la stessa cosa

He’s been worked here for two weeks. He’s been working here for two weeks. 

Ha lavorato qui per due settimane. Lavora qui da due settimane.

Once again, there is no difference in meaning.

Ancora una volta, non c'è differenza di significato.

I’ve taught English since 2016. 

Insegno inglese dal 2016.

I’ve been teaching English since 2016. And these sentences mean the same thing, too. 

Insegno inglese dal 2016. E anche queste frasi significano la stessa cosa.
