Present Perfect vs Present Perfect Continuous: Differences and Grammar Rules

I’m Kate and today we have a grammar lesson. Let’s take a look at these two sentences:

I have lived in the US for ten years and 

I have living in the US for 10 years and

I have been living in the US for ten years 

I have been living in the United States for 10

Do they mean the same thing or  do they have different meanings?

Let’s find out. The Present Perfect and

the Present Perfect Continuous can be used to talk about past actions which are still

let’s remember how we form them. So the Present Perfect is formed with

have or has + the past participle

I have lived. The negative form

have or has + not + the past  participle: I have not lived.

And the question: have or has +  the subject + the past participle:

Have I lived? We use Present Perfect to

talk about past actions and we don’t know when  they’ve finished and it doesn’t even matter.

The result of the action is more  important than the action itself. 

행동의 결과가 행동 자체보다 더 중요합니다.

For example, I’ve spilled my juice. We are not interested what time exactly

it happened, but we talk about the result: I have spilled my juice. Please, give me a

Now let’s remember how we form  the Present Perfect Continuous.

the Positive is have or has + been + verb – ing: 

긍정은 have or has + been + 동사 – ing:

I have been living The negative is 

I have been living 부정은

have or has + not + been + verb – ing: I have not been living 

have or has + not + been + verb – ing: I have not been living

And the question: have or has + subject + been + verb – ing 

그리고 질문: have 또는 has + 주어 + been + 동사 – ing

Have I been living ? So we use the Present Perfect  

내가 살아왔나요? 그래서 우리는 과거

Continuous to talk about actions that started in  the past and has continued to the present moment

and maybe they will continue into the future. So I can say for example,

I’ve been standing in front of the camera. It’s an unfinished action,

it started in the past, and it has continued until right now, 

과거에 시작해서 지금까지 이어왔고,

and it’s going to continue into the future, and I hope you keep watching my lesson.

When we use The Present Perfect Continuous Tense we are more interested in action than the result. 

현재 완료 진행 시제를 사용할 때 우리는 결과보다 행동에 더 관심이 있습니다.

Now I wanna focus on some exceptions. There are some stative verbs that  

이제 몇 가지 예외에 집중하고 싶습니다. 사랑, 원하다, 원하다, 느끼다, 알다,

we cannot use in the continuous tense hate, like, love, want, wish, feel, know,  

need, hear, see, believe. You can say: I’ve heard the news 

필요하다, 듣다, 본다, 믿는다와 같이 진행형 시제로 사용할 수 없는 상태 동사가 몇 가지 있습니다. 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다. 뉴스를 들었습니다.

But You cannot say I’ve been hearing the news.

You can say: We’ve known each other for years.

You cannot say: We’ve been knowing each other for years.

That’s incorrect. Ok let me tell you

about the differences between the Present  Perfect and The Present Perfect Continuous.

Difference #1. The Present Perfect Continuous  describes an action that may continue  

차이점 #1. 현재 완료 진행은 계속될 수 있는 작업을 설명하는

whereas The Present Perfect describes  an activity that has been completed. 

반면 현재 완료는 완료된 활동을 설명합니다.

For example: I’ve read a book (I finished reading a book) 

예: I've read a book (나는 책을 다 읽었습니다)

I’ve been reading a book. (This means I’m still  

I've been read a book. (즉, 아직

reading or I may go on reading the activity is NOT finished)  

읽고 있거나 활동이 완료되지 않은 상태에서 계속 읽을 수 있음을 의미합니다.)

Difference #2. We use the Present Perfect  Continuous to emphasize the amount of time that  

차이점 #2. 현재완료 진행형은 지난 시간을 강조하기 위해 사용하는

has passed whereas the Present Perfect is used to  talk about how many times something has happened. 

반면, 현재완료는 어떤 일이 몇 번이나 일어났는지에 대해 이야기하는 데 사용됩니다.

I've been working on this project for a month.  (We're talking about the amount of time) 

한 달 동안 이 프로젝트를 진행했습니다. (시간에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다.)

We've seen that movie three times. (We're talking  about how many times we've seen that movie) 

우리는 그 영화를 세 번 봤습니다. (저희는 그 영화를 몇 번이나 봤는지에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다.)

I’ve been passing the grammar test for two  hours! (We're talking about the amount of time) 

저는 2시간 동안 문법 시험에 합격했습니다 ! (시간의 양을 말하는 것입니다)

I’ve passed the grammar test six times (We're  talking about how many times I've passed the test) 

문법 시험을 6번 통과했습니다( 시험을 통과한 횟수를 말하는 것입니다)

Difference #3. We use the Present Perfect  to talk about unfinished constant activities 

차이점 #3. 우리는 완료 되지 않은 지속적인 활동에 대해 이야기하기 위해 현재 완료를 사용

and we use the Present Perfect Continuous  to talk about activities that are temporary.  

하고 일시적인 활동에 대해 이야기하기 위해 현재 완료 진행을 사용합니다.

Actions that are not usual. I’ve worked in the office for 10 years. 

평소답지 않은 행동. 저는 10년 동안 사무실에서 일했습니다.

I’m using the Present Perfect because the  action is unfinished and I still work there,

I go to my office every day to work. I’ve been working from home (I usually

work in the office but recently I’ve been working  from home for the reason of pandemic situation)

In this case I mean the action  that started in the past,

it’s unfinished because I’m still working  at home but it’s a temporary situation. 

집에서 일하지만 일시적인 상황입니다.

Let’s have a look at the next example from the first part of our lesson.

I hope that it will be easier to  understand the differences in meaning.

I have lived in the US for ten years

If I use the Present Perfect it’s a more constant situation,

that means I’m not going to  change the place where I live,

and if I say it using the  Present Perfect Continuous

the focus is on the action; I’m still living here  

초점은 행동에 있습니다. 나는 여전히 여기에 살고

but it makes you think that  it’s a temporary situation,

and it may change in the future and maybe I’d move somewhere else.

The next difference. We use the Present  Perfect and the Present Perfect Continuous

to express different kinds of results. I’ve painted my room. It looks so lovely!

We use the Present Perfect when the result  comes from the activity being finished. 

결과가 완료되는 활동에서 나올 때 현재 완료를 사용합니다 .

The room looks lovely because I’ve painted it.  I’ve finished painting. The activity is completed. 

내가 페인트칠을 했기 때문에 방이 멋져 보인다. 페인팅을 마쳤습니다. 활동이 완료되었습니다.

I’ve been painting my room, so I’m tired. We use the Present Perfect Continuous  

방에 그림을 그리느라 지쳤어요. 우리는

when the result comes from doing the activity. Why am I tired? 

활동을 함으로써 결과가 나올 때 현재 완료 진행형을 사용합니다. 내가 왜 피곤해?

I’m tired of painting my room. There is another example: 

나는 내 방을 칠하는 데 지쳤습니다. 또 다른 예가 있습니다.

I’ve played a new game, so  I can tell you the rules. 

새 게임을 해봤기 때문에 규칙을 알려드릴 수 있습니다.

We use the Present Perfect when  the result comes from the activity 

우리는 활동 결과가 나올 때 현재완료를 사용합니다.

I can tell you the game  rules because I’ve played it. 

제가 게임을 해봤기 때문에 게임 규칙을 말씀드릴 수 있습니다 . 하루

I’ve been playing video games all  day, so I have a headache now. 

종일 비디오 게임을 해서 지금 머리가 아픕니다.

We use the Present Perfect Continuous when the  result comes from doing the activity itself: 

우리는 현재 완료 진행형을 사용합니다. 그 결과는 활동 자체를 수행한 결과일 때 사용합니다.

I have a headache now because I’ve  been playing video games all day.

하루 종일 비디오 게임을 했기 때문에 지금 두통이 있습니다.

But there is one important thing you should know: 

그러나 알아야 할 한 가지 중요한 사항이 있습니다.

with the verbs STUDY, TEACH and WORK in most cases there is no difference in meaning. 

동사 STUDY, TEACH 및 WORK는 대부분의 경우 의미에 차이가 없습니다.

I’ve studied languages for five years. I’ve been studying languages for five years.

저는 5년 동안 언어를 공부했습니다. 저는 5년 동안 어학을 공부했습니다.

they mean the same thing

He’s been worked here for two weeks. He’s been working here for two weeks. 

그는 여기서 2주 동안 일했다는 것과 같은 의미입니다. 그는 여기에서 2주 동안 일하고 있습니다.

Once again, there is no difference in meaning.

I’ve taught English since 2016.

I’ve been teaching English since 2016. And these sentences mean the same thing, too.
