You probably know a lot of things that you NEED  to do in order to improve your language skills. 

Probablemente sepa muchas cosas que NECESITA hacer para mejorar sus habilidades lingüísticas.

But what about all those things that  DERAIL your progress in English? 

Pero, ¿qué pasa con todas esas cosas que DESCARAN tu progreso en inglés?

Things that you should STOP doing 

¿Cosas que deberías DEJAR de hacer

if you want to be fluent  and express yourself freely?

si quieres tener fluidez y expresarte libremente?

The first thing you need to STOP  doing is stop studying the language

Lo primero que debes DEJAR de hacer es dejar de estudiar el idioma.

Let me explain. Studying is the wrong thing to do 

Me explico. Estudiar no es lo correcto

if you want to make progress in English  and speak fluently. I'm totally serious. 

si quieres progresar en inglés y hablar con fluidez. Hablo totalmente en serio.

You can never speak a language by just  studying it, no matter how much you study. 

Nunca puedes hablar un idioma con solo estudiarlo, sin importar cuánto estudies.

Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t  tell you to stop studying at all. 

Por favor, no me malinterpretes, no te digo que dejes de estudiar en absoluto.

When we study, we learn vocabulary, we improve our  grammar skills and of course, our level improves.  

Cuando estudiamos, aprendemos vocabulario, mejoramos nuestras habilidades gramaticales y, por supuesto, nuestro nivel mejora.

Through watching videos and TV shows we  develop our understanding more and more. 

Al ver videos y programas de televisión, desarrollamos nuestra comprensión cada vez más.

But when it comes to a conversation it turns  out that we can’t remember words and phrases  

Pero cuando se trata de una conversación, resulta que no podemos recordar palabras y frases

or can't use the words properly, so we can’t  express our opinions and share our thoughts. 

o no podemos usar las palabras correctamente, por lo que no podemos expresar nuestras opiniones y compartir nuestros pensamientos.

Learning a language without putting it into  practice does NOT help you to make progress. 

Aprender un idioma sin ponerlo en práctica NO te ayuda a progresar.

The more you know without  application of that knowledge,  

Cuanto más sabes sin la aplicación de ese conocimiento

the more you feel unskilled and helpless. 

, más te sientes inexperto e indefenso.

Learning to speak a language is  like learning to ride a bike. 

Aprender a hablar un idioma es como aprender a andar en bicicleta.

You can't master it by studying parts of a bike. And you don't learn to ride a bike by watching  

No puedes dominarlo estudiando partes de una bicicleta. Y no se aprende a andar en bicicleta mirando

videos of other bikers. You learn by doing! 

videos de otros ciclistas. ¡Se aprende haciendo!

Watching a lot of content on YouTube  doesn’t help you to make progress. 

Ver mucho contenido en YouTube no te ayuda a progresar.

Reading books and listening to podcasts are  good for comprehension, but it’s not enough  

Leer libros y escuchar podcasts es bueno para la comprensión, pero no es suficiente

for being fluent in English. These ways of studying are  

para hablar inglés con fluidez. Estas formas de estudiar son

passive and they do NOT advance you. They're NOT going to help you speak better. 

pasivas y NO te hacen avanzar. NO te van a ayudar a hablar mejor.

Doing these things only is  not the way to reach fluency. 

Hacer estas cosas solo no es la forma de alcanzar la fluidez.

Start using what you’ve already known  instead of just watching English content. 

Comienza a usar lo que ya conoces en lugar de solo mirar contenido en inglés.

You need to PUSH yourself forward. You need to focus on active ways of  

Necesitas EMPUJARTE hacia adelante. Debe concentrarse en formas activas de

learning – SPEAKING, reading out loud,  shadowing, and talking to yourself.

And the next thing that you need to stop doing  is STOP wanting to speak like a native speaker. 

Y lo siguiente que debe dejar de hacer es DEJAR de querer hablar como un hablante nativo.

You need to get rid of the desire  to sound like a native speaker. 

Tienes que deshacerte del deseo de sonar como un hablante nativo.

A lot of time I see these headlines “Speak like a  native speaker” or 'Sound like a native speaker". 

Muchas veces veo estos titulares "Habla como un hablante nativo" o "Suena como un hablante nativo".

In fact, native speakers learned to speak a  language as a part of their childhood development.  

De hecho, los hablantes nativos aprendieron a hablar un idioma como parte de su desarrollo infantil.

They were born and raised in an English-speaking  environment, and they learned to speak by

listening and imitating what they heard. And you have been learning English for a

As a result, native speakers and you  are at completely different levels.

English pronunciation can be difficult to master. And it requires a lot of hard work, and

When you compare yourself to native speakers, You’re kind of feeling you are not good enough.

You shouldn’t expect to speak  perfect and sound like a native!

You should make your accent clear enough that  other people can understand you when you speak.

I’m not a native speaker and you may  notice that I have a slight accent. 

No soy un hablante nativo y es posible que note que tengo un ligero acento.

And I work on improving my  pronunciation every day.

But the only thing I want is to  sound clear and to speak like myself.

Being a non-native speaker is  not a trouble, it's an advantage. 

Ser un hablante no nativo no es un problema, es una ventaja.

Speak confidently, it doesn't  matter if it's with an accent.  

Habla con confianza, no importa si es con acento.

What really matters is how you feel about  yourself and deliver your messge to people.

Lo que realmente importa es cómo te sientes contigo mismo y cómo transmites tu mensaje a las personas.

The next thing you should STOP doing

if you want to be fluent in English is STOP being afraid of making mistakes. 

si quieres dominar el inglés es DEJAR de tener miedo a cometer errores.

There is one important thing that you need to keep reminding yourself. 

Hay una cosa importante que debes recordarte a ti mismo.

Everyone makes mistakes – even native speakers do. Haven’t you ever said something silly in  

Todo el mundo comete errores, incluso los hablantes nativos lo hacen. ¿Nunca has dicho alguna tontería en

your mother language, for example, a word that  doesn’t exist? Of course you have. We all have.

Just think about it! The point is fear of making

mistakes's holding back your progress My friend tells me that she hates

speaking up in the group because she feels that her groupmates

will laugh at her and probably judge  her for her pronunciation mistakes.

By the way, her spoken  English is actually very good,

but her fears and insecurities  are holding back her progress.

So where does this fear of  making mistakes come from ?

Maybe the reason goes back to your school days  when you studied English sitting behind a desk.

That was a fear of being judged by  a teacher or getting a bad grade…

And now you have to completely  change your mindset.

You don’t need to worry about  saying something incorrect. 

No tienes que preocuparte por decir algo incorrecto.

The most important thing we should  keep in mind all the time is

that making mistakes is a  natural part of learning English. 

que cometer errores es una parte natural del aprendizaje del inglés.

So eliminate your fears. Stay  positive and learn from your mistakes. 

Así que elimina tus miedos. Mantente positivo y aprende de tus errores.

Michael Jordan said “I’ve failed over and over and over

again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” So don’t be afraid to fail and speak as much

A lot of people think that they  haven’t practiced enough and their

level of English is not good enough. When the opportunity comes they feel like

“I’m not gonna speak now because  I’m not ready yet for speaking!"

"I’m afraid I’m not prepared yet!" "My English is so bad!” 

"¡Me temo que todavía no estoy preparado!" "¡Mi inglés es muy malo!"

If you run from every possible  chance to practice speaking English 

Si huyes de todas las oportunidades posibles para practicar hablar inglés

you will never improve. Let’s say you are in Video Game Voice Chat, 

, nunca mejorarás. Digamos que estás en Video Game Voice Chat

and somebody asks you a question and you’re like: “Oh I don’t know  

y alguien te hace una pregunta y dices: "Oh, no sé

what to say, I’m not gonna speak.” And this is the biggest mistake!

Stop waiting for a good enough  level to start speaking. 

Deja de esperar un nivel lo suficientemente bueno para empezar a hablar.

You have to start before you are ready.  Don’t be afraid to join in the conversations. 

Tienes que empezar antes de estar listo. No tenga miedo de unirse a las conversaciones.

If you get an opportunity to  speak English, just take it. 

Si tienes la oportunidad de hablar inglés, tómala.

Don’t worry about failure. Just do it! 

No te preocupes por el fracaso. ¡Hazlo!

As a matter of fact, those  people who challenge your English 

De hecho, esas personas que desafían tu inglés

help you improve yourself  and become a better speaker 

te ayudan a mejorar y a convertirte en un mejor orador.

Just throw yourself in conversation and DO it. Take any opportunity to speak and communicate. 

Solo lánzate a la conversación y HAZLO. Aprovecha cualquier oportunidad para hablar y comunicarte.

I know it may be scary, because you get out of your comfort zone. 

Sé que puede dar miedo, porque sales de tu zona de confort.

But it’s the only way to grow  and make progress in English. 

Pero es la única forma de crecer y progresar en inglés.

And the last thing you should STOP doing  is stop negative thinking about yourself. 

Y lo último que debes DEJAR de hacer es dejar de pensar negativamente sobre ti mismo.

Every time you speak English and  think that you sound funny and stupid 

Cada vez que hablas inglés y piensas que suenas divertido y estúpido,

you hold yourself back. 

te reprimes.

These negative thoughts don’t help you improve. They just derail your progress. 

Estos pensamientos negativos no te ayudan a mejorar. Simplemente descarrilan tu progreso.

You have to remember that fluency in  English is not about being perfect. 

Debes recordar que la fluidez en inglés no se trata de ser perfecto.

It’s about interacting with the world. It’s  about expressing yourself and being yourself. 

Se trata de interactuar con el mundo. Se trata de expresarte y ser tú mismo.

Stay focused on what you want. Language is about connecting with people. 

Mantente enfocado en lo que quieres. El lenguaje se trata de conectar con la gente.

Turn negative thoughts into positive. The only thing you need  

Convierte los pensamientos negativos en positivos. Lo único que

to do is reprogram your mind. Think positive when you start speaking in English.

When you join in the conversation,  your mind is doing like this:

What if I say something wrong?  What if I use the wrong word? 

¿Qué pasa si digo algo incorrecto? ¿Qué pasa si uso la palabra incorrecta?

What if I mispronounce words? What if, what if, what if...? 

¿Qué pasa si pronuncio mal las palabras? ¿Qué pasa si, qué pasa si, qué pasa si...?

Just replace those negative  thoughts with positive ones 

Simplemente reemplace esos pensamientos negativos por otros positivos:

“I can speak confidently. I can speak clearly. My mind is focused on what I say.  

“Puedo hablar con confianza. Puedo hablar claramente. Mi mente está enfocada en lo que digo.

I pronounce English words correctly”. I know it seems strange, but it really works. 

Pronuncio correctamente las palabras en inglés”. Sé que parece extraño, pero realmente funciona.

Tell yourself that you become  a better speaker day by day. 

Dígase a sí mismo que se convierte en un mejor orador día a día.

Notice your progress. It’s  so incredibly important. 

Observe su progreso. Es tan increíblemente importante.

Appreciate yourself. Feel good  about yourself and your English.

Valórate a ti mismo. Siéntete bien contigo mismo y con tu inglés.
