How to use 'Literally' + 'Figuratively' - It's time to Learn English

It is true that the English  language can be quite confusing.

É verdade que a língua inglesa pode ser bastante confusa.

There are so many things you have to remember,

Há tantas coisas que você precisa lembrar,

so many rules that must be followed and obeyed.

tantas regras que devem ser seguidas e obedecidas.

One thing in particular is the  use of literal...literal meanings.

Uma coisa em particular é o uso de significados literais... literais.

When we talk about things that are literal

Quando falamos de coisas que são literais,

it means that they are happening

significa que elas estão acontecendo

or have actually happened in real life.

ou realmente aconteceram na vida real.

It has literally happened.

Literalmente aconteceu.

There is of course figurative as well.

Claro que também existe o figurativo.

Figurative means something has been imagined

Figurativo significa que algo foi imaginado

or perhaps you are using a  term or a word as an idiom.

ou talvez você esteja usando um termo ou palavra como uma expressão idiomática.

You are using it figuratively.

Você está usando isso figurativamente.

For example maybe something embarrassing happened

Por exemplo, talvez algo embaraçoso tenha acontecido

and you might say 'ah I was so  embarrassed I literally died'.

e você possa dizer 'ah, fiquei tão envergonhado que literalmente morri'.

That is not true because  you are clearly still alive

Isso não é verdade porque você claramente ainda está vivo

You did not literally die.

Você não morreu literalmente. É

We can of course use death as figurative,

claro que podemos usar a morte como figurativa,

that is to say you can say 'I nearly  died' or 'I thought I would die'.

ou seja, você pode dizer 'quase morri' ou 'pensei que iria morrer'.

We are using death figuratively.

Estamos usando a morte figurativamente.

In other words you didn't actually die.

Em outras palavras, você realmente não morreu.

You are saying that you felt as if you were

Você está dizendo que sentiu como se fosse

or perhaps you thought you would.

ou talvez pensasse que sentiria.

You didn't die. You didn't literally die,

Você não morreu. Você não morreu literalmente,

you died figuratively.

você morreu figurativamente.

So remember next time you  want to state the way you feel

Portanto, lembre-se da próxima vez que quiser expressar o que sente

or maybe something you want to express,

ou talvez algo que queira expressar,

don't forget there is a difference  between literal and figurative.

não se esqueça de que há uma diferença entre literal e figurativo.

Literally means it did happen or it is happening,

Literalmente significa que aconteceu ou está acontecendo,

figuratively means that it  is imagined as happening...

figurativamente significa que é imaginado como acontecendo...
