How to use 'Literally' + 'Figuratively' - It's time to Learn English

It is true that the English  language can be quite confusing.

영어가 상당히 혼란스러울 수 있다는 것은 사실입니다.

There are so many things you have to remember,

기억해야 할 것이 너무 많고

so many rules that must be followed and obeyed.

따라야 할 규칙이 너무 많습니다.

One thing in particular is the  use of literal...literal meanings.

특히 한 가지는 문자 그대로...문자 그대로의 의미를 사용하는 것입니다.

When we talk about things that are literal

문자 그대로의 일에 대해 이야기할 때

it means that they are happening

그것은 그것이

or have actually happened in real life.

실생활에서 일어나고 있거나 실제로 일어났음을 의미합니다.

It has literally happened.

문자 그대로 일어났습니다.

There is of course figurative as well.

물론 비유도 있다.

Figurative means something has been imagined

비유적이란 무언가가 상상되었거나

or perhaps you are using a  term or a word as an idiom.

용어나 단어를 관용구로 사용하고 있음을 의미합니다.

You are using it figuratively.

비유적으로 사용하고 있습니다.

For example maybe something embarrassing happened

예를 들어 부끄러운 일이 생겼을 때

and you might say 'ah I was so  embarrassed I literally died'.

'아, 너무 부끄러워서 말 그대로 죽었어'라고 말할 수 있습니다.

That is not true because  you are clearly still alive

그것은 사실이 아닙니다. 당신이 아직 살아서

telling the story.

이야기를 하고 있기 때문입니다.

You did not literally die.

당신은 말 그대로 죽지 않았습니다.

We can of course use death as figurative,

물론 죽음을 비유적으로 사용할 수 있습니다.

that is to say you can say 'I nearly  died' or 'I thought I would die'.

즉, ' 죽을 뻔 했어요' 또는 '죽을 줄 알았어요'라고 말할 수 있습니다.

We are using death figuratively.

우리는 죽음을 비유적으로 사용하고 있습니다.

In other words you didn't actually die.

즉, 당신은 실제로 죽지 않았습니다.

You are saying that you felt as if you were

당신은 당신이 마치 당신이 그렇게 느꼈거나

or perhaps you thought you would.

아마도 당신이 그렇게 생각했다고 말하고 있습니다.

You didn't die. You didn't literally die,

당신은 죽지 않았습니다. 당신은 말 그대로 죽은 것이 아니라 비유적으로

you died figuratively.

죽었습니다.

So remember next time you  want to state the way you feel

그러니 다음에 당신이 느끼는 방식

or maybe something you want to express,

이나 표현하고 싶은 것을 말하고 싶을 때 기억하세요.

don't forget there is a difference  between literal and figurative.

문자 그대로와 비유 사이에 차이가 있음을 잊지 마세요.

Literally means it did happen or it is happening,

말 그대로 그것이 일어났거나 일어나고 있다는 것을 의미하고, 비

figuratively means that it  is imagined as happening...

유적으로 그것이 일어나고 있다고 상상된다는 것을 의미합니다 ...
