All I can say is it is too hot for trousers.

I've taken my trousers off, but I'm wearing my shorts today because it's so hot.

I can't begin to tell you how hot it is outside and also in the studio.

In fact, my poor little computer is struggling at the moment.

It is making some very strange noises.

It is trying to cool itself down. But

all that is going into it is hot air, unfortunately.

Anyway, here we go.

We are back together again and there is the view outside the window right now.

It's looking ever so nice outside and I hope you are having a nice day where you are.

All I can say is it is hot.

I don't think I've ever experienced

40 degrees in my life anyway.

Even though I've travelled to many places around the world, hot places

I've never actually experienced 40 degrees before.

So that should be very interesting.

Today it's about.

Well, it's only 31 today.

Very cool.

I was saying to Mr.

Steve earlier, perhaps we should put the central heating on

because it's only 31 degrees here in the studio.

It's about 35 degrees.

It's too hot to do this.

It's too hot to stand in a hot studio doing this.

We've made it all the way to another well,

another week we've got through and another weekend almost.

And of course, we've had a very busy weekend yesterday

I went to see Steve in his show.

He was in a show yesterday, a musical.

Lots of singing, lots of dancing, lots of

acting as well.

And Mr. Steve was there.

We are going to take a look at a video clip of Mr.

Steve performing yesterday

on a very hot stage.

Can I just say the place where we were

at yesterday was really, really hot.

We were indoors and there were lots of lights above the stage.

So the whole room was quite hot, even though they had air conditioning on.

It didn't make much difference.

It was very hot in there.

Anyway, more about that later on when Mr.

Yes, as I said, we've made it all the way to the end of the week

the birds will will stay in the shade.

If you are experiencing unseasonable, I like that word.

If something is unseasonable, it means it is something that doesn't

normally happen at that time of year

or during that particular season.

It is unseasonable and that is the word

I suppose I could use today to describe the weather here.

Very and seasonable.

Even though it's summer, it is hotter than it

normally is, hotter than the average.

Also, we're talking about pictures today. Pictures,

photographs, taking photographs.

I was at the show yesterday that Mr.

Steve was in and we were told that we could not

take any photographs

or video of the performance.

However, I did because I am very naughty.

I did take some video clips yesterday

and we will be watching a little bit of that later on.

There will be no sound because of copyright reasons, but you will

you will be able to see the action on the stage, but there will be no sound.

And I thought, let's talk about photography today, because a lot of people do it.

Some people do it as a as an amateur.

There are lots of people now doing it professionally.

And because of this little device here,

the mobile phone or the smartphone,

anyone can now be a photographer.

So I think it's a pretty popular thing nowadays.

Lots of people enjoy looking at photographs of things that they've done in the past.

It is a great way of reliving your memories, I think so.

to photographs and I suppose also I will ask a couple of questions today.

Do you like having your photograph taken?

Some people don't.

Some people prefer to have control

over pictures that are taken of them.

I will be honest with you.

You might be surprised to find this as as a fact,

but I don't really like having my photograph taken

if I don't have control

over the actual camera or the picture.

I know that sounds strange because you can't always take a photograph of yourself,

but I always worry that the person

will take such a bad photograph and maybe the light will be wrong.

And I will look very strange on the picture.

So that's the reason why.

So even though I spend most of my life

standing in front of a camera like I am now,

I even I feel a little self-conscious

when a person is taking a photograph of me

using their camera or their phone

because I always worry about whether it looks good,

whether it looks good on the actual photograph.

So everybody does it.

And of course, nowadays is a lot of people take photographs of themselves

and then they make some alterations.

They put a filter over the photograph to make themselves look younger.

Or maybe I think nowadays you can actually change the shape of your face as well.

You can actually change the size of your eyes and the shape of your face.

So if your face is a little bit fat, you can actually make your face

look thinner on the camera by using the software.

And then when you take the photograph, you look at it

and you think, Ooh, I look so handsome and beautiful

when in fact it is the camera

that has made you look fantastic and beautiful

because in real life you might not look like that.

So I think that does happen quite often.

But no, not in the UK.

It's very, very rare in homes.

It was so hot that at half time

a lot of people left on one night because they couldn't stand the heat.

There was a lady there of 101 and she had a carer with her

and they took her home because she was overcome with the heat.

I do remember the first time we went to Malaysia and we stayed with

someone they, they were very kind and allowed us to stay with them.

The only problem they had no air conditioning.

And the daily temperature there in Malaysia

is around 33 Celsius.

And the high humidity they had, no air conditioning is unbearable.

I don't think we've ever, ever been in such

an uncomfortable place because I think inside the flat it was probably more like 38.

It's not very nice in sort of places like that.

Malaysia, when it's hot because it's a it's a

it's a moist heat. Yes.

So you're constantly feeling horrible and sticky.

And that's a good word.

It's 48 degrees now in Kuwait, 48 as our Matt.

So I bet you've got air conditioning there.

I think I think because that's the country that is normally hot.

So if you normally have hot temperatures because we have four seasons here, so all summer

is only for a short time, it's almost unnecessary

to have expensive air conditioning in your house.

We can almost get by.

But I will say something now.

We are not used to anything over 35 degrees

because most to get effective air conditioning in your house,

it needs to be sort of put in when the house is built because you have to have something in every room.

It doesn't it doesn't transfer the cold air doesn't transfer from one room to another very well.

So you have to probably have a unit in each

or in each

room which would be quite expensive to fit retrospectively.

Some people put it in their bedrooms

because that's going to be the place where you're going to feel at the most

when you're asleep, when you're asleep and you want some cool air.

So I think it's going to be on the increase.

But what I was going to mention is, is, is that when we,

when we first went to Malaysia, we sleeping, it was impossible.

It's horrible.

It was the worst experience ever was trying to rest,

trying to sleep when the room was was like a like a furnace.

But we are coping here.

will have had air conditioning fitted as standard.

I mean, when I first started in my sales job many,

many decades ago, three, three over 30 years ago,

it was many, many years before I had air conditioning in a car.

And it used to be unbearable in the summer it was you had to have your windows open, Mr.

Jenkins, spitting water, all of his equipment

that went into my mixer.

So if you hear sparks and

the sound of

it's the water that's gone into Mr.

Jenkins equipment, I've just spat water all over my mixer.

I hope it's still working.

It never used to be standard in cars and so relatively recently, I don't think you can

probably buy a car without it now

because it causes a lot bigger glass area in cars now anyway.

So that they're like and it's all very the glass is all snappy and sleek,

so they're like greenhouses, very old days.

There were small windows and everything was upright, so it didn't get quite so hot inside the car.

Steve Obviously I feel as if we strayed and we coped.

Then I kept driving around in the summer just with the windows down,

but you had to have the windows down, even on the motorway.

But it wasn't as hot then.

Well I think in I don't think I don't remember in the 1990s

or the 1980s having temperatures where it was in the mid thirties,

but it seemed that in a car, if the sun's out in the summer,

even as the temperature's only about 25, it gets very hot in a car.

That's true.

And I don't know how we used to cope. No.

Where you could open the windows because you'd just get the blast of air as.

As you're moving along.

That's all you could do.

So it was no easy use more fuel.

I quite like I don't know if you've ever tried this, if you're driving along on a nice day,

you open the windows and you put your arm outside.

Not your whole arm, but just your your elbow.

You put it outside.

It's the most refreshing feeling.

cars, Steve They often stick their head out of the window

because they like the sensation of the speed that says it's quite

bearable in his room in

I would say that his English level was intermediate because he could definitely understand

what we were saying, that that's what I have to pretend.

Quickly just to show some hot words.

So there are many words we can use to describe today.

So all of these can be actually used to describe hot weather.

For example, you can say that it's hot.

The weather today is hot.

It is scolding.

Scolding It is scolding.

It is so hot.

It it feels as if you are burning scolding.

Normally you use that phrase to refer to hot water, your skin,

anything that can cause damage using heat burning on your skin.

So if you put boiling water on your skin, you've been scolded by the water.

And there is another spelling of that as well, which is a C, o

l, which means to be punished

or to be told off for doing something wrong.

You are punished in some way. You are scolded.

So there are two words, but

this one means to be burnt something is put onto your skin.

Or maybe something burns your skin.

It is scolding.

Yes, baking, you might say today the weather is baking like an oven.

Yes, baking.

If you put something in the oven, you bake it.

So that's a good reference to heat that.

So you can use the word baking hot to imply that it's like being inside an oven.

So we are baking

in the in the studio today.

Here's another scorching another good word.

Oh, look at that.

said it's a real scorcher today in an algae.

Yes, scorcher. So that's a good use of the word.

So if something is scorching, it is so hot, it might catch fire. Yes.

So it is burning, but it almost it's

almost about to actually catch fire.

So you might say that today is hot,

scalding, baking, scorching.

Jamila has used that phrase very well.

It's a real scorcher. Yes.

If you say it's a real scorcher today, it means it's so hot

things could, you know, burst into flames spontaneously.

It's these are all exaggerations of this.

When people are talking about the heat, they will always use exaggeration

to make things seem more than they actually are.

Obviously, nothing is literally scorching,

not all baking, but

the implication is that by exaggeration, we have blazing,

hot, blazing, hot day, it's blazing outside.

You can just see blazing, it's blazing, oozing outside.

The sun is ablaze.

The implication there is that the sun is really because these are quite subtle,

the way that you would use you couldn't use them all in exactly the same conditions.

Blazing hot would suggest that the sun

is beating down very hard. Yes.

So blazing normally refers to something that is on fire.

A blazing forest is a forest that is in flames.

It is actually burning.

So it really does describe

incredibly well how hot the weather is

when it's really hot like today, roasting,

roasting something by the fire.

If you stand by the fire or if you put something by the fire

for a long time, it will begin to roast

just as like just like we are today in the studio similar

to baking in that the implication is that you're putting something in an oven

or it's by a fire or something like that to heat something through you.

Heat something through is to roast

blistering another good one.

Maybe if you have an old house that is being painted,

you might see the the paint will start to come off.

It will blister because of the intense heat.

If you've been out in the sun, your skin might come out and blisters

because you get sunburnt,

blistering hot.

So the implication is it's so hot, you will your skin will come up in burnt blisters.

Sweltering, sweltering, sweltering is

is very expressive because it's showing that there's heat.

But also it shows the effect that it's having on on your body or you

as a person featuring physically.

So you're sweating. You're sweating.

Yes. Sweltering is the implication that you're.

It's very humid.

Yes. So in Malaysia, it's sweltering

because you can get dry heat,

like in Australia,

for example, or certain parts of America

where it's it's very hot out in the desert

in Africa, it's hot, but it's a dry heat.

There's no moisture in the atmosphere, you know, whereas if you go to a tropical country,

the same temperature, you've got high humidity combined with the heat.

And that makes it sweltering

because you just you're always sticky, sizzling again.

Something is so hot. It is almost boiling.

It is sizzling, but you can use it figuratively

just to show that the temperature is very high.

So all of these words can be used to describe hot weather,

sizzling, boiling.

It's boiling.

Outside we go.

Well, if it gets too, I mean, I would think that's amazing.

So obviously, water boils at 100 degrees C Yeah.

But in certain parts of the world, it can get to 50 degrees.

That's halfway to the boiling point of water.

Yeah.

I mean that is that's going some isn't it.

It is pretty amazing.

But even getting to 40. Yes.

Is, you know, well, a few months ago, if you well, I suppose

I should say a few weeks ago in India, it was it was getting into the mid-fifties,

which I can't believe I've never heard of these temperatures ever occurring.

And that's the that's the reason why we're getting so excited here in England,

because we've never had 40 degrees.

And apparently that's what it's going to be tomorrow.

So there's another there's another phrase you can use to describe it being very hot.

It's so hot. It's literally you are melting

They're exaggerations to indicate the extreme heat.

It's like if it's very cold, you say I'm freezing.

Well, you're not literally freezing, but it gives the impression that it's very cold.

Yes, that's what we use exaggeration a lot in these types of phrases.

And finally, one that we don't use often, but it is used.

Searing, searing, you might describe the heat is searing.

I came very, very expressive.

I love these words because they they're not just describing something.

They are describing it very vividly.

See, hearing if you see a meat, it means that you see

the outside on a hot flame. Yes.

Or in the frying pan, a hot temperature.

You put the meat in and you see it.

So you you burn the outside of it slightly.

Yes, too.

So that's a good phrase to use often that is used in cooking.

When you see the meat, especially when you're cooking, maybe stew

and you want to seal the outside

so the meat doesn't fall pieces, you want to keep the flavour in.

That's it.

You're really showing that the temperature is higher than it normally is boiling.

Obviously, it's not literally boiling.

So if we say leftovers, it means that you've cooked a meal.

People have eaten so much of it, but you have something

Leftovers is more about what's on the plate of people.

It's a seagull, a very common bird that can often be found

near the seaside or on the coast.

We decided to see what would happen if we threw

some of the chips on the ground.

Needless to say, the result was chaos.

You will often see seagulls

at the seaside,

so our day trip to the seaside is almost at an end

as we walk off together into

the sun set. Oh,

I wish I was there.

Right there at moment, but unfortunately we're not.

Lewis said they have it once a year.

Lewis and his wife have lobster once a year.

And it's one of those things.

Some people like lobster, crab.

I'm not sure if I've ever tasted lobster.

I think I have.

It is renowned for being expensive as a meal.

So maybe if you go to a very fancy restaurant or a posh.

I have tasted it.

Oh, yes.

I went round to somebody's house, which was cruel.

They'd bought a live lobster.

Okay. Ooh.

And they and they cooked it, they put it in the water

and put the stove on and then heated at the wharf.

And you know, eventually

when the water gets to a certain temperature dies and the poor thing is trying to crawl out.

That ooze crawled out of the pot. It was

cool, I thought.

I mean, normally they steep it into boiling water, then they

to to cook lobster.

That's basically the best way to cook it.

It's the best way not it isn't the best way for the lobster, unfortunately not for the lobster.

And I have to think I don't think they enjoy it.

And Jameela said at the start of the video

she wanted to have some it made her want to have fish and chips. Yes.

And then, of course, later on you showed us actually

getting fish and chips, because traditionally when we think

going to the beach or the seaside

in this country, we often think of having fish and chips as well.

Although I do remember that the fish in that video,

your fish, you didn't really enjoy it because it was a bit greasy and tasteless.

Used to be lovely. That fish shop has gone downhill.

and they've lost a day because the flight was cancelled at the last minute.

So I think we'll avoid airports this year. Yes.

I don't think flying and that was my feeling anyway,

because I just think everything will take at least another year to get back to normal.

So I think I think may be abroad next year, but this year somewhere.

So something that we call a staycation.

Staycation, should you stay in your own country and you've got lots of problems.

Duncan. Well, there are lots of places to visit, though.

Many places that we could stay at.

And maybe we we're thinking of September at the moment, aren't we? Yes.

When the children and the kids have gone back to school,

which is sort of

the second week of September, not our kids, we don't have any

we had the children take six weeks off in the summer and then they go back.

In fact, they'll shortly be breaking, weren't they, for that summer break? Yes.

And they go back.

You don't want to be going on holiday

when the children are off

because it means everybody's booked up, the prices are high

and you've got kids everywhere when you're out having meals, screaming children.

So best to go on holiday when the children are back to school, which will be mid-September

and we'll have maybe a couple of weeks before it gets into when autumn of nice weather.

And I think we're going to have a nice holiday.

So we might go to Wales, we might go we might go to a beautiful place called the lake.

That's another place I've always wanted to actually go to.

Never stayed there.

Or maybe we might go down south,

we might head down south, maybe toward the south coast would be nice. Yes.

We actually have a friend who lives on the south coast and he has

with his wife invited us.

Go down there means that Sean.

And we've got friends in Plymouth as well. Yes.

We'll do a tour.

Yes, I quite fancy going to Scotland, but maybe that's a bit too far.

That's too far away.

And also the weather in September in Scotland will not be very good.

And they've got lots of midges.

Like small mosquitoes that bite you.

You wouldn't things.

I see Holland is renowned for its it's got a very bad

reputation, particularly in August September for mosquitoes.

That's because of all the large lakes and lochs.

There's a lot of water, more water than you might realise in Scotland

because of the nature of the land might not put you off.

But yeah,

it take

a long time and you take a long time to drive to the south coast,

probably about four and a half hours.

But if we wait until the children

go back to school, then the roads will be less busy

and we will be able to get somewhere nice for probably the price.

What I do enjoy is these days there are many holiday companies there

that actually have exclusive holidays where there are no children.

They don't actually allow children to be

to be brought with the parents.

That's what happened when we went to Turkey.

So the place we stayed at in Turkey, they had a no child policy,

even though on one occasion they did bring somebody

who did bring a very annoying child

who is incredibly spoilt and precocious

and she did annoy

quite a lot, but that's besides the point.

They're much smaller, but their bite is just as bad.

Well, they can be horrible, but they come

the UK, you get midges coming out at night.

You'll just get a bite.

But midges are very small and they get they

they come out at night and you can go outside and they sort of get in your hair, on your scalp.

And you can they give you a little sort of

They must be they must be biting.

But they're very small midges.

I mean, the word midge means small, doesn't it?

It's somewhat as a very small thing.

A person.

So that's small mosquitoes, but they still bite.

But the bites aren't quite as bad.

Because you know, you're not looking deliberately in the mirror to look at yourself.

So the person's self image is, is of a young person,

but when they suddenly see their reflection, it's almost like they're looking at another person.

But photographs are very unusual things because.

Well, first of all, a lot of people don't like having their photograph taken.

As I said earlier, I'm not comfortable

when someone else is taking my photograph

because I always worry about what the photograph will look like.

I always like to make sure I can see or control

the photographs after they've been taken.

So I always feel as if I want to look at them.

And then the ones I don't like, I want to delete.

And I also have this annoying habit.

If I miss a wedding and they take photographs, I always pull

a very silly.

I normally do this

and there are lots of wedding photos

with me in normally in the background or amongst the group.

We can be camera shy.

So this is a good one.

Very similar to what we just said.

A person who does not like

or does not want to have their photograph taken,

we can describe them as camera shy.

A person who is camera shy is a person will.

They will always hide their face.

So it may be if they're in a group of people and one person

is taking a photograph of the group,

there's always one person who does this.

They will hide.

They just don't like their picture.

Being my mother's camera shy. Yes, very.

Isn't like our favourite picture. Very. Because

to take a good

photograph, you've got to smile, haven't you?

You've got to.

You can't be afraid of the camera. No.

Because otherwise

you'll take a poor picture.

So you've got to.

It's a bit of a skill, learning how to take a good photograph.

You've got to be you can't be self-conscious.

You've got to I don't know how you do it, but not if you're camera shy.

You probably won't take a good picture because you'll be worried about how the picture is going to come out.

And then you look worried.

And the picture and then you look at it, you say, well, look awful.

I look horrible.

So so I think with us over the years,

we've become very used to having ourselves on camera.

But even now, I still don't like having my photograph taken unless I have some control

over what it looks like afterwards or if it's a bad photograph.

It can happen even even if you are on camera a lot.

And the best photographers are people that will will encourage you to they will talk to you.

You do that when you are.

That's how you get my mother to take good photographs. Yes.

I normally start laughing and joking and then your mum will start laughing

at that distracts my mother away

from the worry of having a photograph taken.

And you'll do something to make an angel and then you'll get that natural

look then not an artificial look, which is a posed photograph.

Which looks unnatural and probably makes you look than you when you actually.

I use the same method that photographers use when they're trying to take pictures of children.

They get the child to be distracted or to to smile, laugh.

And so I use the same method with your mum.

I just.

I just do something silly and then your mum starts laughing.

Says if you normally say when you say cheese, although actually

when you say cheese, you don't actually smile necessarily.

You see, I can say cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese.

You're not even smiling.

It's a phrase to usually

people respond to that because it makes them smile.

And another one to be photogenic.

Are you a person who always looks good in photographs?

So There are certain people who always look good

in photographs wherever they are,

whatever type of light is around them, they always look good.

They have a certain face or a certain

shape of their face, which always looks good on photographs.

According to Jamilla, we are photogenic.

Oh, but the lighting is very carefully arranged yet.

So this is a studio environment where quite often

the lighting is created.

You create this environment, so you always make sure that it looks

as as good as possible, photogenic.

A person who looks good models, sexy models

where they always look good.

Maybe a male model or a female model.

They have a certain look.

Sometimes I find sometimes I see people who are

but not not good looking.

And I think you know what I mean?

I'm sure you know what I mean.

You see a person often in advertising, they will use a person who is not necessarily

good looking, but they are.

There is something interesting photograph genic.

Yes, there is something interesting about their appearance, but they're not

what you would call classically attractive or good looking.

They just have something that makes them interesting

and interesting face as well, which is often used in advertising.

I think the thing is, if you if you want to take a good photograph or you want to

be good on video, you've got to behave naturally.

I think if you start, if you worry too much about, what's

going to happen, then naturally your face will morph into a

into a into an expression that will not look good on camera.

So it's true, though, there are all these different types of software now

and that I think young people are quite obsessed with taking photographs of themselves,

but quite often they will use filters

so that that software is called a filter

and it filters out all of the blemishes or the impurities.

And quite often also you can change the shape of your face.

Of course, we can't do that because this is life.

You can't really do anything with a live image.

But so this is really.

Yes, but things like Zoom.

Oh yeah.

Teams have these beauty filters and I know people at work

switched that on and you can you can have it on minimum or maximum.

Yes, it increased and we've noticed some people who during

the pandemic were on the news, but they couldn't come into the studio.

So they were using Zoom or teams from their home and they certainly look much younger

than they used to on the television or we saw them on Zoom on the television

and then we saw after the pandemic on the television, outside being interviewed.

And they looked about 20 years older. Yes.

Because they were clearly using these beauty filters.

On that Zoom or teams app. Yes.

But if you use Instagram, Instagram has hundreds of filters now,

different filters to make the eyes look larger or even to change the whole shape of your face.

So if you think your face is too fat, you can actually make it look slimmer
