the reason why we have Shrove Tuesday

is because it's part of a religious festival

called Shrove Tide,

and this takes place over

three days before Ash Wednesday.

So this is the beginning of what we call Lent.

So certain religions follow a fasting period, and in the Christian religion,

certain people will follow Lent,

they will abstain or they will fast.

Maybe they will give something up for that

particular period of time.

We often call it the Festival of Confession.

And normally on Shrove Tuesday, people will gather together

and they will collect all of the food

and they will eat it on that day.

And then during the festive period, all of that food will not go to waste.

So that's the reason why people do it, Although nowadays

I don't think people do all of that.

I don't think many people do actually fast.

First of all, it's not very good for you.

So this

leads up to the period called Lent, which is the fasting period.

So during Lent, people will give things up.

Quite often people will give up smoking or maybe drinking

or chasing ladies around or something like that.

So Lent is the period that follows Shrove Tide.

So first of all, you have three days of celebrations

and then you have Shrove Tuesday and then

Lent begins.
