have you ever noticed sometimes  when you look in the mirror  

you look better than certain days when  you look in the mirror and you think

oh my goodness what is that i don't know why  this morning maybe it was the sunlight coming  

into my bathroom but i thought this morning i  thought oh mr duncan you look very well today

i will leave you to be the judge of that  here we go then yes we are back together  

at the weekend it is english addict coming to  you live right now check your watch it is now

it is honestly it it is  right now live from england  

from the birthplace of the english language yes  i said it once and i'm going to see it again

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are  you today are you okay i hope so are you happy  

is there a smile on your face today well  i hope if there isn't i will bring one  

to you i will bring a lovely smile to your face  i hope so my name is duncan i talk about english  

i like the english language you  might say that i am an english addict  

and i have a feeling you might be as well it is a  beautiful day here in england we are having a very  

nice day can i just say right now we're having  a lovely day sunny mild quite mild for the time  

of year so normally at this time of year it will  start to get quite cold especially in the morning  

but we are having nice mild weather at the moment  you can see behind me yes for all those who keep  

asking yes that is live behind me so everything  that happens behind me is live right now  

in this present moment of time so  i talk about the english language  

i've been doing this forever such a long  time how long mr duncan thanks for asking  

nearly 15 years and this month i am celebrating my  15th anniversary here on youtube can you believe  

it i've been doing this for nearly 15 years so  that's what i'm doing this month a special series  

a special season of live streams and i will  give you the details very quickly because i  

have a feeling there are still some of you who  don't realize so during this month the month of  

october from monday to friday i am with you from 2  p.m uk time 2 pm uk time is when i'm here with you  

during october and of course i'm also with you as  well on sunday which i i have a feeling you know  

because you're here now watching so there it is  the introductions are out of the way i'm here six  

days a week monday to friday and sunday during  october even though now i'm already receiving  

already i'm receiving messages from people  asking mr duncan can you please be live every day

can i just say i am not as young as i used  to be i'm getting older i have to have a nap  

in the afternoon that's how bad things have become  

during the afternoon almost every day including  today i often go and have a lie down on the bed  

for an afternoon nap so that's it there  there it is right there if you needed  

proof that i am no longer a young man i have  to have my little afternoon nap on the bed  

i'm sure a lot of other people do it as well i  have a feeling i'm not the only person maybe it is  

one of your traditions maybe it is something you  like to do every day i know in some countries many  

people have a tradition of having an afternoon nap  or a siesta during the day so i don't think it's  

particularly unusual however i do find that by  the time the afternoon comes and as the afternoon  

wears on or moves along i find that i become quite  tired i feel fatigued oh i like that word fatigue  

tiredness so if you have fatigue it means  you are sleepy you are feeling tired you  

are exhausted maybe you've had a busy morning  so that's my world for now how is your world is  

it okay i hope you've had a good week yes we have  made it all the way to the end of another weekend  

and we are now halfway through the month  as well in fact slightly more than halfway

yes it's sunday

there's nothing wrong with  having a nap during the day  

if you want to have a nap in the  afternoon go on do it don't be ashamed

there is no need to be ashamed or  feel embarrassed about having a nap  

so we are here on sunday and yes we are just  over halfway through october and in about a  

couple of weeks in fact i am celebrating my 15th  anniversary on the 31st of october which is sunday  

so that's great we can share the celebration  together on our sunday live stream so i'm looking  

forward to that i'm i'm pretty sure there will be  some special things happening on that day i have

what it actually meant was my whole live  stream stopped working but i was able to  

recover my live stream afterwards and join you  again so fortunately the electricity only went  

off for a few seconds and then it came back on  however beatriz was also having problems with  

her electricity on the same day which i thought  was quite strange hello also to oh louis mendes

scottish james bond with sean connery because he  was scottish you see so if you can have a scottish

not given birth but maybe his wife has given birth  to a baby girl isn't that lovely where is mr steve

a nap of maybe half an hour to recharge my brain  to get along until 2 or 3 a.m when my day ends  

and i have to go to bed i suppose so  some people work very long hours and i  

do realize this quite often in certain  jobs you might have to work for many  

hours my brother-in-law i don't normally  talk about him but my brother-in-law works  

very long hours because he works in a particular  field a particular area i won't say where  

i'm not sure if he wants me to tell you  you see but he works long hours and shifts  

so some people do work for for very long hours  maybe you are a person who is a security guard  

in a building you have to stay awake all  night i don't know how i could do that  

i couldn't you see i would fall asleep i would  be the world's worst security guard i would  

i would wake up and everything in the building  would be gone everything i would be terrible

do you pull many teeth out of people's heads  these days i have a feeling that dentists don't  

want to pull your teeth out unless it's absolutely  necessary many years ago dentists would just pull  

your teeth out all the time whatever it was they  would just pull them out i remember when i was a  

child i went to the dentist and they pulled 10  teeth from my mouth 10 teeth at the same time

is that 10 i think it was ten  ten teeth at the same time  

but i think these days i don't think  dentists like to take a person's teeth

see you all here today we are talking about  traditions so a few moments ago i mentioned  

the tradition of having a sleep in the afternoon  there are certain countries certain cultures  

that observe that tradition quite often people  will go to bed or have a sleep in the afternoon  

and that is what we are talking about today  one of the things we are talking about today  

is the subject of tradition things that  we often do things that we feel obliged  

to do the word oblige we often use the word oblige  if you feel as if you have to do something or  

something you feel you must do so we think of  tradition as something that is often done or  

observed so that's what we're talking about  today traditions there are many different  

traditions and i think it's fair to say that  from one country to another those traditions  

will change so maybe in one country there is a  certain tradition that is followed or observed  

and then maybe in another place there  is a completely different tradition  

so today we are going to look at some traditions  with mr steve and myself and also you as well  

we will also be looking at your own traditions  traditions that maybe you have in your country  

so that is something i will be asking you about  later on i hope you will join us or stay with us  

until then i really do also we are talking about  teams today i don't think i've ever discussed  

this topic before but i'm going to talk about  teams we often think certainly in the workplace  

we talk about teams quite often in a company or  maybe in an office environment or maybe in sales  

probably sales definitely i think so i'm  pretty sure in sales you often have teams  

so that's another thing we are talking about  today i hope you will stay with me oh by the way

it is now starting to look like autumn i was out  yesterday walking around and it is definitely  

starting to look like autumn has arrived  now there aren't many leaves on the ground  

there are some but not many but you can see  they they have definitely started to fall  

and some of the leaves on the trees  have also started to change colour  

but very slowly i don't know what's happened  this year it's been a very strange year  

but this year we've had very mild weather  unseasonal so even today it's quite warm  

and i i couldn't resist showing you a couple of  views of the the autumn weather as autumn slowly  

arrives isn't that lovely one of the things i love  about autumn is the sound of the leaves crunching  

under your feet i love walking through leaves  that have fallen from the trees i don't know why  

there's something really pleasant about that sound  oh hello mr pigeon did you see the pigeon then  

so there it is the scene at the moment here  

in england and this was me yesterday having  a little walk into town with mr steve

and we had a nice afternoon in town yesterday  we went to our our new favourite place

to have a cup of tea well in fact we had a cup  of coffee this particular cafe in much wenlock  

does the most amazing coffee they use one of those  big machines that grinds and then makes the coffee  

it presses the coffee so all of that lovely  coffee goodness comes out i believe it's called  

tamping is that right so when you when  you squeeze the coffee when you squeeze  

all of that coffee goodness and flavour i think  it's called tamping you use pressure i think so  

but i do love the sound of of leaves as you walk  around and i also like the smell of coffee as well  

another person who loves the smell of coffee is  mr steve and he will be with us in a few moments  

right after we have watched one  of my many lessons here on youtube  

one of my full english lessons we we will  sit and watch this together and then mr steve  

will be here with us live  in the studio ah incredible

oh hello there welcome to another full english  lesson with me mr duncan i hope you are feeling  

good today what is full english i hear you ask  full english can be about anything connected  

to the english language new words new  expressions new ways of using familiar words  

perhaps that is the reason why we are here  before i begin i have a little brain teaser  

for you what common word can be used alongside  these five words down wet super place  

and stall i will give you the answer at the end  of today's episode so get your thinking caps on

here's an interesting phrase have you ever  been in a situation where you've reached  

the point of no return to be in a position  where you find yourself unable to go back on  

something you have said or done is to be at  the point of no return a moment of anger or  

frustration might cause you to say or do something  which you cannot go back on it cannot be undone  

there is no way back i told my boss he can  stick his job where the sun doesn't shine  

i got so angry at my neighbour and  said some very hurtful things to her  

we can also say that you have burned your bridges  an action that causes irreversible consequences  

might be described as burning your bridges  those actions are irrevocable irreversible  

final irretrievable and permanent they can't  be undone sometimes it is best to choose your  

words and actions carefully or else you might  find yourself stuck with the consequences of  

a situation where there is no going back  you have reached the point of no return

it's time to take a look at another biz word a  buzz word is a word or phrase that is popular  

during a certain period or is often used today's  buzz word is litigate the word litigate is a verb  

that means to go ahead or proceed with legal  action against someone the action of litigation  

is the process of taking a person to court due to  a perceived wrongdoing or in an attempt to receive  

payment for damages or some other form of  recompense the word lawsuit is often used  

when naming this action you issue a lawsuit  and you begin the process of litigation  

we might also use the word sue when legal action  is carried out against someone normally this  

involves the claiming of money for damages  caused to a person's reputation or good name

here are two words that begin with the same  letter but have very different meanings  

the words are help and hinder to help or  offer help is to give assistance or offer aid  

to someone with a task of some sort an action  that is useful to someone can be described as  

help you give help you offer help you are helping  someone then there is the word hinder which means  

to prevent or obstruct someone to distract or  interfere with the smooth flow of something is  

hinder you hold something back by getting in the  way a hindrance might occur when two actions clash  

two different languages being used at  the same time might hinder a conversation  

so help and hinder can be used as opposites  one is useful whilst the other is not

can you see where i'm standing i am  behind bars the bars on these railings  

are in the way they are partially blocking my  view and are preventing me from moving forward  

bars are often used as a safety measure  gates and fences might have bars on them  

windows sometimes have bars so as to  prevent break-ins or in the case of prisons  

breakouts you can bar someone as an action to ban  or list someone as not welcome can be described as  

barring you might be barred from your local  pub for bad behaviour to be added to a list  

of people who are not allowed to enter a  place or join a group is described as being  

barred i have been barred from the local pub  for fighting with the manager then there is  

the expression raise the bar which refers to the  standard or level of something being increased  

the bar is used figuratively to show  the expected standard of something  

so by raising the bar you are increasing the  standard or difficulty of something of course  

the opposite can also be true it is possible to  lower the bar when standards are being lowered the  

quality of something is not as high as it used to  be the bar has been lowered the phrase behind bars  

is often used to describe a person who is serving  a prison sentence they are literally behind bars

well sadly we have come to the end of another  full english lesson at the start of this video  

i asked you to work out what common words can  be used with each of the following words down  

wet super place and stall the answer is  

market you can have down market which  means cheap with no frills you can have  

wet market which is a place where fish is sold  you can have supermarket which is a large food  

retail store you can have marketplace which is  an area where traders gather to sell their goods  

and you can have market stall which is a position  where a trader will sell their goods from

it's mr steve i wondered what who you meant then  he's here i thought who i've got a special guest  

well of course it's you i know but you know you  are always a special guest i'm so modest i like to  

think it's somebody else somebody famous from the  local area but of course you're the most famous  

person in much when not mr duncan yes i would  wager even though i'm not i'm not on the wikipedia  

site for much when even though i keep putting  myself on there it's great i put myself on there  

as a famous local person and then someone comes  and they take me off again so this has been a  

long-running battle for about the last four  years so i i will go and put myself on there  

because i think i am a well-known person here in  much wenlock i think i deserve to be on that list  

of dignitaries famous people and every time i do  it someone else goes and they take me off again  

what we need is for somebody somebody maybe out  there to put mr duncan on wikipedia for much  

wenlock and then it can't be taken down is that  correct anyone can take it down oh i see yeah  

what mean spirited people mind you we have got a  famous television star living in much wenlock yes  

quite a few well mary beard as well she's famous  she's still alive and incredibly famous and she is  

from much wenlock and and she often appears on  television talking about literature and poetry  

so yeah she's very famous so quite a few famous  people have come from here much wenlock and you  

are let's say you're the third most famous person  yes let's say the third i want i want to say first  

would i be the fourth probably not no i don't  i'm not sure what you're famous for maybe you  

are infamous maybe you're famous in your company  i'm infamous by the way we're talking about teams  

today and this is something that steve knows a lot  about talking about teamwork being in a team some  

people are very good at working together whilst  others are not i would say that i'm one of those  

well i don't think we work very well together  as a team no anyway we're not talking about the  

subject yet oh okay before you launch i'm going to  say can i explain the word infamous first oh okay  

because i think i mentioned that word  somebody might want to know what it means  

if you're famous it means that  everybody knows you if you're infamous  

it means you're known for something bad you're  known for something bad something you've done  

wrong and there are many infamous people  i can i can think of three infamous people  

hitler is that a good one yes hitler yeah i  think he's infamous i think a lot of people know  

that he did bad things uh another one attila  the hun attila the hun he was a really angry guy  

so anybody that lots of people know about  but it's because they've done a bad thing  

we say they're infamous uh or you know infamous  infamous yes that's it right so that's that one  

and uh luckily with stalin says tomek yes yes  exactly yes there's lots of infamous people  

but you tend to use it as a joke when you say to  people if somebody says that somebody's talking  

about themselves you tend to use it as a joke with  people or you're infamous you are you might have  

done something bad at work it doesn't have to be  somebody who's done something really very bad no  

you could have done something bad at work you know  you might be known for always having accidents or  

it doesn't have to be genocide no it doesn't have  to be genocide it can be something that it's a bit  

of a joke at work say you you're always tripping  up and falling over or you're always you're always  

breaking the i.t systems or something oh you're  infamous you are you're always breaking the  

computer systems everybody knows about you and  in all the different offices maybe they're just  

always late you can be infamous for a certain  for a certain thing and maybe you didn't know  

that people were sort of talking about you uh in  the background um and then somebody says oh you're  

infamous you are because you're known for  something that's probably not that good  

and we didn't we did name some earlier we did  name some of those people yes so it's normally  

pretty pretty horrible people they usually say  it's usually said in a bit of a jokey way yes  

okay anyway we're talking about traditions as  well and there are many traditions by the way can  

i say happy mother's day to argentina because in  argentina today it is mother's day right because  

it's often celebrated at different times of the  year so we celebrate our mother's day earlier  

in the year don't we i think it's around april  yes and then in some countries it's much later  

for example october in argentina yes so hello to  all the mothers watching in argentina today and  

they're well i i've got a tradition mr uh duncan  mr duncan yes mr duncan that's no name that's me  

a tradition now is you doing a live stream on  a sunday yes i suppose so your tradition yeah  

this is this is a sort of this is a sort of  tradition i suppose and we're going to look  

at many words there are many words that you  can use many words and many ways of expressing  

things that are seen as traditions i feel you  want to say something did you say we're talking  

about teams as well we are talking about teams  well you see there we go that tomek's revealing  

his i think what he does for a living because  uh nobody would use the phrase there is no i  

in team i don't think unless they were involved in  sort of sales or something to do with that because  

it sort of drummed into i think we do know what  atomic does there isn't revealed to us before  

there is no eye in team but there is me yes no one  ever notices that yes they always say there's no i  

in team but there is me in team yes m-e it's  in there check it have a look now me is in team

you can blow that one straight out of the water so  what are we talking about first teams or um what  

was the other subject i've forgotten already  traditions traditions well look at the screen  

which one there's so many i don't know which  one to look at it's just a wall of screens in  

front of us steve gets very easily confused and  distracted traditions we are looking at traditions  

first of all words phrases ways of describing  or expressing traditions traditions are things  

that are done at certain times or for certain  reasons i would say that that was a fair enough  

explanation of what traditions are a  certain custom or event with significance  

is a tradition so it can be something that  a lot of people observe at a certain time of  

year or during a certain period of time  these traditions can be small or large  

casual or grandiose oh i like that word something  grandiose is something extravagant opulent  

so maybe there is a big festival where lots of  people do things maybe they have big meals and  

celebrations in the street and lots and lots of  things happen maybe there is a carnival that takes  

place during that tradition so these traditions  can be small or large casual or grandiose  

yes grandiose grand so lots of people are dressing  up in maybe uniforms and their finest clothes  

maybe like going to ascot it's quite  a horse famous horse racing event uh  

it would be grandiose because everybody would  dress up if you went to the queen's garden party  

which we're you know expecting an invite one  day for our services to english uh then we  

might get invited to the queen's garden party  and that would be grandiose because we would  

dress up uh in our finest clothes i've been to  quite a few queens god and parties really that  

doesn't surprise me mr duncan that's another story  an act that is customary is a type of tradition  

so something that you often do in a certain  period of time or maybe on a certain day of  

the week which we will be looking at a little bit  later on so there are traditions that we might do  

at a certain time maybe on a certain day or  during a certain month for example this month  

a lot of people are talking about and  celebrating and observing black history month  

so there is a tradition that has come to light  and come to mind the minds of many people over the  

past 10 or 15 years so it's become more and more  popular even though in the united states black  

history month has been around for a very long  time but now it is being observed in other parts  

of the world as well have we mentioned mother's  day being a tradition have we mentioned that yes  

that is a tradition it is yes well in argentina  as i said it is a tradition so it is a moment  

for people to say thank you mommy for giving  me a helping hand or a helping start in life  

people can say in their own families it doesn't  have to be something that everybody does in a  

particular country it can be you might do  something in your family yes every month  

or every year that's it you might have something  that your family will do together and you call  

that a tradition that's it it might be a big  family get together we are going to be covering  

all of these things steve so we're just looking  at the meanings first so you can have cultural  

traditions i like the way when i like the way  that steve sometimes does the rest of the lesson  

well because i don't know what you're  doing i just come on i've been busy  

doing other things and i just come on don't i you  can have cultural traditions or social traditions  

so cultural traditions are the ones that are  deeply embedded in cultures as it suggests  

social traditions might just be things  we do in certain areas at certain times  

maybe you have a social tradition in your  family or a social tradition with your friends  

hey we've got one from willian said in brazil in  february and february and march there's a carnival  

a big party with samba and costumes it's a  brazilian tradition although willian says  

he's not a fan but it does have well i'd like to  see it you know a lot of these things can be very  

noisy not everyone likes noise so if you have  banging drums and street festivals and people  

blowing whistles and making lots of noise not  everyone likes that you see but it is a bit of fun  

i suppose once you've been to one  of them and it's not every day  

no exactly imagine every day imagine if you did  that every day just every day you had to run  

around the streets blowing whistles and making  lots of noise that would be a lot of headaches  

here's another way of looking at traditions  well traditions as you mentioned earlier steve  

can be related to family time family time and  i think this is a tradition well i certainly  

remember it and i'm sure you do as well steve  traditions involving the family and there will  

be lots of lovely family traditions that people  would observe individually or as a small group  

maybe people would get together at certain  times of the year maybe you would have just an  

occasional get-together i like that word if you  have a get-together it means you meet together  

as a group you come together and you have a social  event and particularly for example if families are  

spread around in different parts of the country  which is very common these days in the uk that  

people don't aren't born in one town and stay  there all their lives with all their families  

around their aunts their uncles mother father  brothers and sisters quite often people move  

away they might go to university they might get a  job somewhere else and the families are split up  

all over the place we won't go into the into  the pros and cons of that but then once a year  

they might all meet in the same place  everybody comes together so that the family  

all meet once a year maybe they go out  for a meal something like that well  

you often find in countries that have well large  populations or are large i suppose a good example  

is india a lot of people live far away from their  families so family reunions are a very big event  

they are important events especially if you live  hundreds of miles away from your family because  

you are living in a big country india china is  another one one of the largest movements of people  

in the world happens during the chinese new year  in china nowhere else on the planet do so many  

people move all at the same time from place to  place millions and millions and millions of people  

move and they go to visit their family they go  to stay with their family for the spring festival  

because china is so large and people live hundreds  sometimes maybe a thousand miles away from their  

family and they have to spend three or four days  going back home can you imagine spending three or  

four days traveling back home maybe on a train or  in a car oh my goodness i couldn't do that i could  

not do that but yes family time and i suppose  the simplest form steve would be just sitting  

with your family on on any normal day sunday  lunch yes we're talking about that in a moment  

there's a there's a song if  anybody has ever seen the show  

fiddler on the roof which is a well-known  musical there is a song in that called tradition  

and that's uh because i don't think there's  many songs about traditions but that's one  

and it's quite a well-known song and  it's talking about different traditions  

um i think within the jewish community in this  particular uh context in that show uh but yes  

worth listening to that if you like show songs  which of course i do having appeared in so many  

not that one though i was going to appear in  fiddler on the roof uh but then the the show  

was cancelled uh it was a big disappointment  to me because i've always wanted to do that  

much to the relief of many people never mind oh  i'm right okay so family time can can be just  

sitting down with your family and i think this is  one tradition that doesn't really happen anymore  

look beatrice says here pizza on saturday night  with family or friends is one of the traditions  

that uh beatrice does uh there we go um so  that's good yes please tell us if you've got  

sort of family traditions things that you do  on a regular basis could be every week once a  

month once a year you know just let us know  we'd like to know but i remember as a child  

that all of our family would sit  down my mum my dad if he was there  

my sisters and myself we would all sit down  together normally we would have our evening tea or  

evening dinner and then we'd all sit down and  watch the television we would spend some time  

together as a group and the reason why that  happened more than anything else steve was  

because there was nothing really else to do yeah  but also it was a nice way of just spending time  

with your family so i i have many fond memories  of sitting with my family especially on sunday  

evenings and we would all sit around and watch a  bit of television maybe a little bit of bullseye  

our favorite quiz show at the moment that's become  a tradition for us to sit down every night and  

watch two episodes of a quiz program that ended  in 1990 four four yes but but but it but it was  

running during the 1980s as well so it was on for  many years but my family would sit down i would be  

with them and we would all sit and watch a little  bit of television so it was family time that's  

what i like to describe it as and that's how i  remember it sitting there all happy together and

it's it's it's a special moment however these  days i don't think family time really does happen  

in quite the same way maybe there is family time  but they're all in different parts of the house  

having yes not everybody wants to  get get together with their families  

um but um it you know it's a good idea  to stay in touch with people so yeah  

little these little traditions can can uh  can start um without people realizing like  

groups of friends yes and things and they  suddenly realize they've done the same thing  

you know every year or they've done that every  week they might every friday they might go out for  

a meal together friends at work or something and  then suddenly someone will say oh this has become  

a tradition now we always go out on a friday night  a group of us from work and the you know they can  

sort of just start in that way they're not big  traditions that have been around for sort of  

decades or hundreds of years but they're just  little ones that start up within groups of friends  

so traditions don't have to be big things they  don't have to be the day that your country became  

independent so those are big grandiose traditions  but they can be anything meeting up with your  

friends once a month can become a tradition so  here's a good one steve now this is one that  

i always think of i always think of this when i  think of traditions especially in in your normal  

week in your normal day-to-day in your normal  activities from monday to sunday well sunday  

is often seen as a separate day from everything  else so i remember years ago sunday used to be so  

i want to say unique because i i think it was  because everywhere would be shut yes you couldn't  

do anything on sunday all the shops were shut all  the shops were in the 1970s when we grew up yes

and uh you couldn't get anything if you'd run  out of milk yeah or bread you had to go and  

ask your neighbour yes so it is true that from  from my childhood i remember sundays being quite  

quite dull and they could be quite boring  yes they had a fear a certain feel to them  

um something you couldn't put into words that  um when you grew up sunday had that feeling  

because there were certainly lots of religious  things going on church bells would be ringing  

my mother always went to church on a sunday  and she'd always come back very happy

and uh then we'd cook sunday lunch dad would  always do roast beef or something like that  

so that's a good that's a good example steve yes  of a sunday tradition so there are things even now  

even though the shops are open all the time now  including sundays so many shops will still be open  

even on sunday however there are some traditions  that we still observe some people do go to church  

i will say not many you if you if you ever go  to any church on a sunday morning you won't see  

hundreds of people you might see 20 or 15 or 30  but not hundreds so going to church is is not  

really seen as is something many people do anymore  however there is one tradition that many people do  

can you guess what it is steve sunday lunch no  in the morning uh clean their teeth that's not a  

tradition is it no in on a sunday yes on a sunday  in the morning yeah go to church no no i've just  

mentioned that um what lots of people do it do  they they do especially for a walk no they get  

the sunday paper oh the sunday paper the  sunday paper yes it is a big tradition  

in this country i don't know where you are i  don't know about where you are but here sunday  

papers and the reason why the sunday newspaper is  so popular is because it's not just the newspaper  

if you buy if you buy a sunday newspaper in  this country it's normally full of magazines  

and other things to read as well piles of paper so  normally your newspaper on sunday is is this thick  

it's full of things most of which you never read  and end up being thrown away um you get all these  

supplements supplements extra sort of things that  are that are added in like a newspaper on travel  

you might get a little magazine about travel and  i used to search through my father's stack of  

new sunday papers for the one that talked  about cars there was always a separate piece  

that talked about cars the latest cars or road  testing things so our our sunday newspaper drink  

our sunday newspaper is not really a sunday  newspaper it's it's just everything it's a massive  

pile of magazines and things and you just take  it home and then you you you divide everything up  

and then you read the newspaper first to fall and  then you go through the magazines and as steve  

rightly said maybe you have a magazine included  that has news about cars or fashion or travel  

celebrities that's the big one now so there  are many of these supplements that are put  

inside your newspaper on a sunday about celebrity  gossip i used to think what good value you've got  

this great you could literally read all week how  much comes with the sunday newspapers of course  

i think that's a tradition  that's dying out because  

i mean for example um i'm the next  generation obviously after my parents well  

my mother and father every week went out  every sunday went out to get the sunday papers  

but i haven't i don't do that no we well we don't  really read newspapers anyway no but you know i  

haven't carried that on because newspapers are  going online more now you read newspapers a lot  

you have to subscribe to them on the internet  so i think it's people of a certain age  

maybe maybe over 60 in the uk over 70 that still  go out every week for their sunday newspapers i  

think i i would uh well i don't know anybody of  my age or younger that still goes out and buys a  

sunday newspaper even my mother stopped doing you  will be surprised steve if you go to a news agent  

at 8 8 30 or 9 o'clock in the morning you'll find  people fighting literally fighting over the sunday  

sunday newspapers but not as much as they  used to not as much everybody bought us a  

newspaper when we were growing up i think if  we did go though we would easily win the fight  

because you know most of them would be quite  elderly yes and we'd easily be able to push  

them out of the way we just come on i'm having  the last paper get out of the way your old bag  

mr duncan uh we've had somebody here say  ahmadu bar has said thank you so much  

for your lessons over the years  how much do we have to pay you oh

i've been watching you since second class in  college thank you i was the chairperson in  

our school wow so hopefully that mr duncan has  helped you uh over the years so thank you very  

much for that that comment it's very nice to hear  that thank you very much yes well well i've been  

i've been doing this for nearly 15 years at  the end of october 15th anniversary two weeks  

from now we will be here celebrating my 15th  year so we are doing our sunday live stream  

steve on the actual anniversary which is pretty  good yes it's the same day today no not today  

right you obviously didn't listen to a single  word i just said i'm reading the live stream and  

reading the live stream maybe i should just talk  into your ear like this very annoying mr duncan uh  

vitas has asked me specifically a question  which i'm sure you would be able to answer  

what's the longest word in the english language  oh everyone keeps doing this every week  

is it supercalifragilistic no because that's not a  real word i know it isn't but that's made up there  

there are there are two or three very long words  in english but there is one that is a specialist  

word a medical word which relates to a type  of lung condition and it has a very long name  

it's made up of about maybe 10 or 15 different  syllables but it's really long and i'm not going  

to try and pronounce it and it doesn't mean i  don't know about english if i can't pronounce it  

so there but it is long look it up it's the  internet for goodness sake just google the  

bloody thing uh yes just google it is eating very  uh varenic verenicki oh you're okay i said yeah  

uh it's a tradition for me not to be able to  pronounce words that people put on the live stream  

for a moment i thought you were having a stroke  uh thank you uh it's a tradition traditional dish  

a belarusian dish pasta mashed  potatoes fried onions and bacon  

you had me at mashed potatoes that's it exactly  just mashed potatoes would have been enough if it  

is if it involves mashed potatoes i am there count  me in well that's another tradition isn't it food  

and lots of traditions around food in the  uk it's turkey at christmas not so much in  

america i think they have turkey at thanksgiving  don't they don't sure what they do at christmas  

maybe they have turkey anyway but yes we are food  related ones we're digressing and of course it's  

making people hungry already another tradition  that we have in this country and you might  

have them where you are as well so these might be  different depending on where you are in the world  

bank holiday so yes this this is a tradition  that i i remember for all of my life  

i i can't think of a time when there wasn't a bank  holiday so your bank holidays would be a public  

holiday and it would allow people to celebrate  normally religious festivals so that's how the  

whole thing came about so people wanted to have  their own special day or their own special holiday  

and of course the word holiday derives from holy  day which is a day when you would have a rest and  

you would be able to go to church and pray to  your god and say please please don't smite me  

anarchy says the the in spain the tradition  for christmas night dinner is arguments  

well we can all relate to that when families  come together i mean christmas is all can be very  

stressful yes it's all the preparation leading up  to it making sure you've got all the food having  

to fit working around that it's very stressful  and then of course somebody might say something  

during the christmas meal yes and then there's  big arguments in fact there was a big argument in  

our family years and years ago when i was a young  child now i'm interested yes i thought you would  

be come on uh when i was a young child apparently  my brother my your brother my father you have a  

brother my father maybe it's you maybe that's what  the row was about oh yeah you're finding out you  

had a brother well probably do have in various  countries your father was a sailor well exactly  

we've got relations all over the world a woman  in every port yes but anyway surrounded by seaman  

uh but yeah mr duncan but yes i mean i could  well have um you know brothers and sisters half  

brothers and sisters all over the world they  could be little mr steves everywhere around the  

world so if you're you know in a port somewhere  uh in a seaside place where you have a big port  

so if you have you see somebody who's bald  if you have a brother that looks like this  

there is a good chance that maybe you know at some  point but anyway talking going back to my original  

story yes i want to hear about the argument yes  the argument my mother always tells me this story  

um quite regularly uh it was many years ago  where i think i was quite young maybe a baby  

okay and my father and mother and my father's  brother and his wife and their young children  

and my grandparents all got together for  christmas christmas day big massive argument  

and my father's brother walked out uh on  christmas apparently with his family and  

all drove back home okay and but no that you've  left the bet the best part out why i don't know  

the story was it because of all your father's  illegitimate children nothing to do with that  

allegedly mr duncan allegedly i'll sue you for  for that for that if you carry on no apparently  

apparently i just love the idea of lots of  little mr steve my father's brother my uncle  

and uh his father my grandfather okay never really  got on they didn't together they never got along  

together he didn't get on very well i think my  father was seen as the favourite out of the two  

and uh there was always sort of tension and i  think uh there was a big argument yeah and uh my  

uncle walked out and uh there we go yes i really  i want to know why though that i want to know yeah

i don't think she remembers what she remembers  is the horrible feeling of that happening because  

you know rushing out and it was late at night  as well wow and um you know just drove out of  

the house maybe there was some alcohol being  consumed right could well have been i remember my  

my grandad can you believe this by  my grandad and my father getting into  

almost into a fist fight one one christmas and  that was all because of drink all because of  

alcohol and and they would get more and more they  would get louder and louder and then eventually  

you know you know how it happens when you have a  bit of booze and people start talking more freely  

and and saying what they think and in the  end i think it was almost picture of the  

scene almost my father and my grandad going  out of the house to have to have a fight  

in the garden so that would have been my father  and his father you see so now you can see why that  

would happen quite often the friction friction  disagreements between children or the offspring  

or or and the parents would often come around  during certain festivities so bank holiday is when  

everyone gets a little bit of time off from their  job traditionally it would have been a religious  

festival maggie p says that in germany the shops  are still closed on sunday oh i didn't know that  

no well there you go some traditions that we don't  have anymore still exist in other countries yes  

yes yes it's quite sad really i mean it used  to be nice that uh i suppose it's good was it  

margaret thatcher that in that introduced  opening on sundays i can't remember now  

margaret thatcher was responsible  for many things most of them bad  

uh but allegedly we won't get into it  allegedly uh i don't think they were all bad um  

in uh in the beach yeah in willian says uh that  people go and go to the beach and jump the waves  

three times oh i see a new year ah there are  many of those though aren't there steve so  

we used to have the tradition where you would  run out the house and carry a piece of coal  

around the house around the streets and  i think you did it maybe three times and  

then went back into the house so you'd bring the  hot coal then into the house and that supposedly  

is bringing the new year in to the house but  there are many of these traditions that exist  

around the new year i think you're right  there steve definitely i don't remember  

running around the house with a piece of coal no  around the house outside okay not in the house  

please don't run around the house don't run  inside the house with a big piece of hot coal  

because you might burn your house down and that is  not a good way of starting the year to be honest  

not a good day no not a good way willian's put on  a very very long word which obviously is a medical  

term yes i won't even attempt that's the one  that's the one don't don't count the words that's

has said i can't stop saying myori myori myori

really yes i didn't see that in in georgia says uh  monica uh we used to eat mashed corn with cheese  

oh now fat sounds quite nice cheese with corn that  is a very strange combination but if you added  

potatoes into that mashed potatoes imagine what  that was in fact we had something very similar  

last night yes we had mashed potatoes with sweet  corn and also lentils lentils yes lentil and  

potato pie and spinach and what you didn't know  is that i added in your favourite ingredient  

except it's not your favourite ingredient uh  because mr duncan hates it i hate it you i hate  

it wasn't that disgusting stuff that looks like  it looks like tiny eggs i've i've added in some uh

some i think you pronounce it quinoa quinoa  quinoa which is all i had this last week but  

we didn't have time to to show it it's a grain uh  but mr it's hot it's a bit mr duncan doesn't like  

it but i put some sneak some in the pie last  night because it's very good for you and this  

comes all the way from peru yeah so is anybody  watching from peru we've got your quinoa quinoa  

in our house quinoa i think it's pronounced quinoa  it's disgusting it's very posh if you say you eat  

quinoa in the uk people think oh how how terribly  cultured of your posh this is really moving away  

from what we're talking about we've got a whole  nother subject to talk about we have that's  

right yes yes anybody watching from peru okay now  what's that what now this will be a test mr duncan  

yes no let's forget about it because i'll be  talking about something i know nothing about  

i'll get everything wrong well that looks stupid  that's just a normal uh week isn't it nobody's

really really this this is so dull and boring here  we go it might be to you a commemoration steve a  

type of tradition can also be a commemoration so  when you think of commemorations can you think of  

one well we commemorate the for example  every year the the dead from world wars  

we commemorate their memories every year wars  centre not necessarily world wars but any war  

that's what we do isn't it every year yes and  some people have mentioned that as well that they  

commemorate the dead once a year probably from  wars but yes we do that well there is a tradition

there is a tradition in in asian countries  where people remember their dead relatives  

and they call it tomb sweeping so they  call it tomb sweeping festival it happens  

i think it happens in japan and also in china i'm  not sure about other asian countries but there  

i know so every year there will be a festival  where people remember their their relations who  

have passed on but they will also go to their  grave and they will clean it and attend to it  

uh in china they call it cl tomb sweeping tomb  sweeping i remember because sometimes my friends  

would call me and say i can't see you tomorrow  i'm going to to sweep my grandmother's two really  

yes and i i just thought what that's that's  not a that's not a phrase that's not a sentence  

you would normally expect to hear it's  showing respect for your dead relatives  

look at that enaki is uh sorry maggie  p is cooking right now with with quinoa  

quinoa yes uh anakin says it's a first class  protein yes it is there's not many vegetable  

proteins that have a good balance of all the  amino acids that you need to meet you know like  

chicken animal food animal protein is very high  in all the essential amino acids that you need but  

normally something like rice or lentils have  got aren't very good quality whereas quinoa is  

virtually identical to meet i'm starting to think  that mr steve has shares no i don't in a quinoa  

company zika says it's a bit expensive it it is  but it's come down dramatically in price okay  

actually over the last right okay is it cheaper  than all even maggie peas is it cheaper than oil

or petrol commemorations so quite often around  the world there are different commemorations  

remembering a certain event maybe a certain  tragedy maybe a certain change maybe a certain law  

or something else changed during a period of  time so the commemoration can be just remembering  

something that happened did you know there is  a joan of arc festival in france really they  

have a festival where people all gather together  and they dress up like joan of arc and they they  

have a big festival there i'm sure louis yes and  and i think as well and i think willian as well

maybe they can tell us yes there is a joan of ark  festival and everyone gathers together and they  

dress up like joan of arc i is that true is that  a real thing or did i just imagine it in my brain  

maybe it was once but not so much now maybe um i  did see tomek that you tomek was joking that he  

was he was in peru oh but he's since retracted the  comment but too late because i saw it very good  

so commemorations are a type of tradition i  suppose so for example here here's a tradition  

that we have here normally the summer months  are lovely and bright if you are lucky you will  

have sunshine during british summer months and  quite often we will have a summer fate fate so  

you can see the word their fate we could also say  festival or fair and people will gather together  

they will sell cakes and food and there will be  lots of games to play we have one here don't we  

much wenlock we do in fact a couple of years ago  we were there live at the at the local summer fair  

in much wenlock and we were there live doing a  live stream church fates are very common as well  

uh that you have a church fate where normally  they're trying to raise money for the church  

so they're might be selling old clothes somebody  might make some cakes or jam uh there might be  

some fun little things to do as well a tom bowler  there might be a raffle where you've got prizes  

and you pay so much money for a ticket and then  hopefully you get the winning ticket and then  

you can pick one of the prizes yes fates are often  used to raise money aren't they for churches yes  

so so quite often there is some charity involved  and maybe there is some money being raised for  

for good causes so we do have summer fates here  apparently the largest festival in the world is  

in brazil that must be the one that william was  referring to and referring to earlier lots of  

noise lots of color lots of drums beating away  with that wonderful and as you know if you are  

a regular viewer you will know that i love  that sort of music latin american music sort of  

because of my opening music that i play during  the countdown so i i love that sort of music  

it really makes you feel like steve  it makes you feel like moving like  

yes yes exactly yes so it's a nice bit  of a nice bit of samba or calypso music

yes and just the fun of  everything everybody dressing up  

we don't really have them here we have the um  what's that one they have in london every year  

the carnival i can't remember what it's called  gay pride no not that one wasn't thinking of that  

one uh like a caribbean sort of festival they have  every year and what you mean notting hill carnival  

notting hill they have that every year and that  looks like a load of fun i've never been to it  

but uh none of these things are happening at the  moment for two years so there are no fates no  

festivals a lot of things have not been happening  for obvious reasons uh harvest festival here's  

another one steve a tradition many years ago it  used to be a very big thing i remember growing  

up at my school we would we would celebrate  the harvest festival yes everyone would bring  

little pieces of food or cans of food and then we  would leave it at the school and then that would  

be donated to someone a local cause or a local  charity so harvest festival traditionally again  

religious it was all based on religion so  you were you were basically getting together  

and saying thank you god for allowing us once  again to have some lovely nice corn to eat but  

of course in america they call it thanksgiving uh  you know they're thanking you know and then giving  

to the poor in society uh giving because that's  what we used to do isn't it you take food in  

uh to the church um maybe something  that you've grown in your own garden  

and then it would be given out to the poor in  society um as well but yes you you are thanking  

god for your for the the bountiful harvest um  and then you're also uh helping poorer people  

in society by giving them some of the food  that's come out of course well i mean it's  

um autumn normally i mean that's at the moment  mr duncan autumn we talked about autumn earlier  

okay that's one of the traditions of autumn as  you say the harvest festival or thanksgiving in  

america but it's very late this year isn't it in  this country what uh because harvest well because  

the the the season has extended on and on i mean  it i mean if we're nearly in november and it feels  

like september the weather's unbelievable yes i  mentioned this earlier it's it's so warm we could  

almost go outside now in our shorts and t-shirt  and and we would feel comfortable it's bizarre  

and yet november is just two weeks away and  yet the leaves are still on the trees normally  

they've gone off the deciduous trees the leaves  have fallen off but it's nearly november and  

they're still there on most of the trees it  only just started to turn their normal sort  

of shades of autumn colours but you'd normally  expect that in end of september beginning of  

i think it's gone on for an extra month we've  had an extra month of of summer weather yeah well  

the strange thing was in september we had more  heat and longer days of sunshine than in august  

in so september was more like summer than august  was very strange but we we are still having lovely  

mild weather as you can see behind with our live  view as the birds fly by do we celebrate saint  

john's night says anarchy oh um the shortest  night of the year well yes that is the uh

i'm going to reveal my ignorance and say i've  never heard of st john's night no no well we have  

one coming up soon in november we have a little  tradition uh guy fawkes night yes on fire night  

yes that's a good one mr duncan on the  5th of november where people get together  

and we commemorate the the failure of guy  fawkes and his co-conspirators blowing up  

they tried to blow up the houses of parliament  and and that is a tradition that we we hold on to  

we do now that i can't remember what year that is  we should know we should know yes but just don't  

draw attention to it if we don't know something  don't draw our attention to something we don't  

know so yes i mean i don't suppose that  happens in other countries guy fawkes night  

where we think it was the 17th century  someone will tell us please google it  

um we should we should know but yes somebody's  trying to blow up the heist as a parliament yes  

uh and uh why you dress up a scarecrow to look  like a guy a scarecrow uh you you dress you you  

dress up a mannequin because guy fawkes was was  arrested and burnt wasn't he yeah on a bonfire  

actually he was he was um i as i understand it  he was actually disembowelled and then and then  

burned and then burned on a bonfire so every year  in this country on the 5th of november people put  

a guide for they dress they dress up a doll or  dress dress up you know in old clothes stick him  

on the top of the bonfire put a hat on and and  set fire to it but they don't disembowel anyone  

we don't do that anymore no but but we do recreate  the punishment tomic says i'm going to mention it

where is sergio i don't know we don't know where  he's gone i don't know well i know he was blocked  

somebody blocked him but it wasn't me can  i just say it wasn't me yes that's what i  

just said he was being naughty wasn't he's being  naughty he upset people yes but the thing is no  

it's it's closed but you can't unblock him can  you because unless he comes down he can't do  

i just wish you'd know when to stop well i'm  just saying we can't bring him back because  

we don't want to bring him back he was causing  chaos and being real anyway right why would you  

bring someone back who insults the people on  your live chat okay stevens no i have zero zero  

steve just let me finish my bloody sentences  zero tolerance if people come on here and  

they they are purposely hating and being  disrespectful and hurtful to other people  

then then i i don't know who blocked him  but he's blocked and he he's not coming back

sometimes i wonder if it is my show but not  on a sunday no clearly it's become a tradition  

i do like it when steve brings up things subjects  and and facts that he actually doesn't know about  

and then reveals our ignorance so i can't remember  the exact year of the gunpowder powder plot  

but somebody tell us but it wasn't it was  the 5th of november and that's all it matters  

we all get together we burn little effigies on  bonfires and then we eat lots of lovely hot food  

but not many people do it anymore it's it's  another thing that is slowly dwindled so not  

not as many people celebrate it as before steve  i'm getting to the end of this i think i said  

they tend to have this sort of big sort of  mass bonfires now yes we always used to have  

one everyone had one in their garden but it's sort  of everyone goes through a big mass event now yes  

and they're not going yeah anyway right move  on hurry up mr duncan i just love it when you  

interrupt yourself you start saying something  then you interrupt yourself you you actually  

interrupt your own sentences i haven't i've  never met anyone that does that by the way

oh dear well go on what well you said you  wanted to move on to something else causing  

an interruption so there are it's interesting  just to notice how many traditions there are  

in fact in your country i i imagine in  your country can you name a tradition  

that maybe you have what traditions do you  have in your country and they can be anything  

and i would imagine steve many of them will be  religious festivals because that's what the whole  

thing came from many traditions were or are based  on religious events or religious beliefs things  

that are written things that happened maybe a  hundred years ago or a thousand years ago or  

two thousand years ago or one and a half thousand  years ago depending on where you sit and how you  

pray so what traditions do you have do you have  any special traditions we don't really follow them  

anymore do we steve i wouldn't say we have any  big traditions that we follow i suppose the only  

one is christmas christmas yes we don't really  follow easter anymore no um but then you'd have  

to be quite religious to want to follow that one  maybe um oh i was right about i was right about  

because i thought guy fawkes it was 1605 wow which  was the start of the 17th century so i knew that  

just wanted to see if anybody else did i really  don't think you did i really don't think you did

oh yes eid there we go that's a celebration  that which has uh for muslims celebrating eid  

yes that's just happened recently hasn't it uh and  we have big celebrations in the uk with that yes  

um well i remember when we were in malaysia  when the chinese new year and also eid  

fell at the same time and they called it  something slightly different in different  

countries when we were in malaysia  uh used to be called harry rya  

harry ryan i don't know what i don't know what  the what that was that's probably somebody's name  

so if anyone's from malaysia you'll know about  harry rya maybe it's in other countries as well  

i think it's a type of greeting yes eid is is  right after ramadan then we have diwali as well  

the festival of lights that's right that one also  observed in this country you will find many people  

put put small lights in their windows around  the country um during that time around the world  

country others are the gum tree the country yes no  unfortunately that was my asthma you see my asthma  

just kicked in there but thanks steve i think  it's the food i'm going to i want to be invited  

to um one of these festivals um because uh the  food must be amazing because i love i love uh  

what we would call a curry which is spicy food um  oh yes in fact i went out for a curry mr duncan  

didn't i on thursday night fascinating yes yes  tell us all about it that's a tradition for me  

to meet up with my friend that i've known for  40 years to meet up for a curry once a month  

pardon i said he's a lunatic i said he's a lunatic

broke down on the way back quite late at night  it's not the only thing that broke it's not the  

only thing that broke down it's not very nice  to break down late at night on a lonely road  

i feel like i might be breaking down  myself mind you he can take care of himself

saint martin's day in italy nobody else will  during this day people celebrate the autumn  

drinking the new wine and eating good food  well i like the sound of that laura the one  

thing i love about religion is is quite often  there's lots of lovely food involved yes i would  

i would like to sign up to all the religions  that exist in the world and then go along to  

all of the festivals just pretend just for the  food just pretend that you have uh converted  

to all these different religions  and then you can go along to  

all the celebrations i don't think it works  like that uh no you'd soon be found out

right what are we moving on to now mister  we've had lots of people have been sending  

in lots of traditions already we've  already mentioned lots of them  

there's a festival of colour as well yes holly or  holy which is the festival of colour right okay  

people make carpets on corpus christi day i've  heard it on the streets and use many materials  

like coffee powder sand and rice husk that's  very interesting yes um well the carpet i think  

i think it's it's things that are scattered  around so i don't think it's actual carpets  

i think it's just the things they they take all  of those things and scatter them around and that  

one of my favorite festivals i think  is it in i think it's in thailand  

there is a wonderful festival where they  they throw tomatoes at each other is that  

is that thailand i think it is i remember seeing  a documentary a report about this years ago when  

everyone is throwing or is it water i think it's a  water festival but there is another country where  

they throw tomatoes at each other as well they  used to do that here and they if you've been bad  

they used to throw rotten tomatoes at you daniel  um shafiq says it's quite interesting that i  

mentioned harry rya but yes well please tell me i  can't remember what it is is it to do with ramadan  

uh i think it is it's not a person it's definitely  not a person yeah so uh please tell me exactly  

what that is because i can't remember all i used  to know is that that used to happen in malaysia  

because when we were there they would often  be celebrating it if it coincided when we were  

there at the time and there was so much food  oh yes nashad says do you celebrate halloween  

in the uk not as much as we used to however in the  united states halloween is celebrated and observed  

quite quite often and a lot however there is a  lesson by the way this is a good chance for me to  

to mention one of my lessons that i did all about  halloween but here in this country it's not such  

a big thing it has become more commercial but i  wouldn't say that it is as as popular as in the  

united states they love halloween but they they  like anything that that allows you to dress up  

and decorate your house and and drink lots of  alcohol i don't think that's anyway yes i mean  

we never used to celebrate it here i mean  when we grew up when i was growing up in  

the 1960s 70s we didn't really celebrate  halloween it sort of has come from america  

and traditionally people dress  up of course in horror outfits  

and then go and knock on people's doors and the  children this is how ask for sweets but once again  

it's a religious festival that's it yeah halloween  stems from all hallows eve which was the belief  

that ghosts and the undead or the dead would rise  again and their spirits would float around and  

it's it's all connected to religion and paganism  and then it was moved and stolen by other people  

to to stop people from celebrating that's why  christmas is in december it's one of the reasons  

why we have christmas at that time of year to  to annoy all of the pagans it's true look it up  

i think uh we don't celebrate uh pound me we don't  we don't celebrate anything on the 4th of november  

uh on the 5th of november that's guy  fawkes night that's what we celebrate um  

and i just to be lovely i used to like going  to uh particularly it's a love guy for tonight  

because it was always it was november so it  was always cold sort of wet um mum would make  

uh gingerbread men yeah she would always make  gingerbread men which is a sort of like a biscuit  

yeah um pressed into the shape of like a bear  isn't it i think a bear yes i know that was it  

was it or was it into yes used to have it used to  make the pastry and then press out and it would  

give a metal mould a ginger a gingerbread man it's  a bear i'm getting it wrong of course uh and it's  

just shaped into a person about that big yes arms  and legs but not necessarily a man because that's  

sexist you'd have to call it a gingerbread  person no well not even person not even  

the person you know you've got to be careful a  gingerbread figure figure yes of indeterminate sex  

gender gender not sex you don't use the word sexes  okay you wouldn't survive a second by the way  

i'm so glad that you're not on social media all  the time because they would come around and they  

would drag your your carcass along the road i'd  be cancelled straight away you know i wouldn't be  

on the on the television for more than ten minutes  you would be cancelled before you even started but  

yes mum always had it was like a ginger biscuit  gingerbread bed shape of a figure a figure human  

figure yeah which i presume was representing maybe  guy forks i don't know but she'd bake those in  

the oven and we'd always have um baked potatoes  are sure it wasn't baked bears baked potatoes so  

dad would put the baked potatoes in the bonfire  they'd cook in the bonfire then we'd put  

butter and salt on them uh and you have  to be careful though because uh when you  

build the bomb fight you normally build the  bonfire sort of a week or two in advance  

oh sorry are you still talking so you get your  old twigs and branches and things as high as you  

can possibly go um very high but of course what  happens is in those week or two weeks after you've  

made the bonfire all the hedgehogs think that's a  good place to go and uh to go and hibernate okay  

so you have to check first before you light the  fight maybe the occasional [ __ ] and of course  

you have said it's food baked potatoes and  gingerbread men yes uh gingerbread persons

can we say human now is that can we still use the  phrase humans well that's described something it's  

got man in it oh dear it's not huge it's now a  huge person it's hugh person the world's gone  

or homo sapien are you a homo sapien i've been  described it's been the other words have used  

to have been used to describe me in that way where  are a couple of more derogators we are a couple of  

homo sapiens we are exactly and uh so we had the  bonfire and then we'd have fireworks of course  

yes oh my god are you replaying this in real time  well i thought you wanted me i thought we were  

sort of you know we've got 20 about 18 minutes  left i thought you hadn't got anything else to do  

another bloody subject oh i didn't know that i  thought you wanted me to vamp you know just carry  

on talking i wanted you to shut up fond memories  but usually damp cold and wet we have we have a  

whole other subject about teams do you remember  do you remember what i said when you first arrived  

vaguely oh my god it's like it's like having a day  out with your granddad nashad says that they just  

watch horror movies and of course there are lots  of horror films set around halloween halloween  

if you go out in the street at night on  halloween you will be grabbed by the ghoulies

or the ghosts oh it's here oh bears gingerbread  bears oh right mr duncan you know how to draw  

attention to my failing memory i just  don't i don't even know how where did  

you get that from i don't know well you can have  gingerbread bears gingerbread men look it up why

well come on then mr duncan move on to your next  subject you keep saying you want to move on to  

the next subject i'm still i'm still completely  blown away by your your well you know what my  

brain's like when i'm live you know i can only do  so much i get there eventually all i'm doing now  

is picturing these these gingerbread bears look  valentine says i'm a great storyteller thank you  

very much yeah but the problem is they go  on a little bit too long well do you know  

you know war and peace is shorter than your  stories sure people are interested in what we do  

in this country you know on 5th of november which  isn't far off by the way we used to celebrate  

that didn't we what we to have fireworks  we used to we have fireworks every sunday  

that's true that's euphemism isn't it it  means things things are becoming heated  

or heated people are arguing yes we say  that there are fireworks that's right

that's right come on then teams teams  someone said that our uh thumbnail today  

makes us look like sex offenders i don't  know what they mean right i haven't seen it

it's a tradition for me to sneeze on your live  streams like the one coming on steve is now going  

to sneeze i'm allergic to you i think what it is  think of not sneezing if you think of not sneezing

my nose is itching i'm trying to  suppress shall i call the doctor  

shall i call a doctor or a priest if you  press there it can very often stop the sneeze  

i've heard if you put it if you put a  polythene bag over your head and then tie it  

here that can also stop you from sneezing thank  you very much mr duncan and everything else

anyway we are talking now about teamwork are we

finally i'm trying to here we go teamwork  now i think this is something i've done this  

for you by the way wow because i think  this is why you're asking me why sorry

you know one week i am going to cry i'm going  to burst into tears teamwork so so you work  

with a company and you you work as part of  a team as well yes these are things that i  

feel you should know already i don't know why i  pretend that i'm working in a team i'm actually  

just working by myself yes but we often we often  use the word team in various ways including team  

building and i think in many companies especially  where you have a lot of employees working  

in a similar field and by that i mean sales so  i suppose sales you would often have teams yes  

because the companies think and they're  probably right that if they can get people  

working together sharing ideas sharing best  practice then you will get more results that way  

um so i mean i i think it probably does  work um i think tomek probably works in a  

in an industry where teams are important i'm  getting the impression from uh the uh comments  

that he's made earlier and from in the past  okay and it wears me down a bit mr duncan how  

the companies are constantly trying to forces our  little local sales team of about six seven of us  

this is a very interesting way of handing in your  resignation no but uh i think they go over the top  

i think they do it too much they're always having  social events or bonding where you have to sort of  

you know climb ropes or do something together  to to overcome some obstacle in the middle of a  

forest somewhere or or something or or beat  somebody the other team in some other game  

because they think that if you all bond together  then you'll phone each other up and share best  

practice on how you did that and that'll move  things forward i'm not sure i'm not sure that it  

how much effect it really does  have because i think ultimately  

particularly if you're in sales you always  want to beat other people so you're always  

going to keep something back for yourself  some little nugget of truth some little  

way in to the customer that you don't want to  share with somebody else because ultimately you  

want to be numero you know in the sales chart  uni yumio you know numero you know uno uno

it's numero uno yes that's what  i said yesterday it was not  

it's exactly what i said it was not what you  said it's almost as bad as gingerbread bears

maybe we've started but what i actually  wanted steve was was the meaning of  

team building not not not a dire tribe  about it so you said you'd done it for me  

yes what it's a tradition for us to argue on the  live treat streams the subject the subject is  

team work which i did for you i didn't do the team  building for you so team building is normally when  

you gather your colleagues or people that work for  you together and you want them to bond together so  

normally you give them activities some of the  activities that steve very helpfully mentioned  

so it's building not only the team but i would  say also it is building a sense of trust as well  

and here's the i love this steve there is no i  in team yes i think tomek mentioned this earlier  

he did yes that is a well-worn phrase yes well  used well used or well-worn everybody says it  

there is no i in team but as i said earlier look  there is me m e so you have me in team even though  

there is no i and the reason why we say that is  because there is no individual person in a group  

or team so everyone works together there is  no one singular individual who stands out  

you all work together as a team however i've  noticed that there is the word me in team  

very clever mr duncan by the way when we go to  visit louis in paris which we will do one day

we will not ask to go and see the eiffel tower  because uh louis says that when people come  

to paris the first thing they want to see is  the eiffel tower so you have to go up with them  

don't worry no i was disappointed we won't  go up the iphone we won't ask to go up the  

eiffel tower we won't okay because because  well first of all it's surrounded by glass  

now at the bottom you can't get near it there's a  long queue we don't like you so anything involving  

a queue we won't be interested in well there  is a reason you see because everyone has to  

go through metal detectors that's right and  they have to strip down to their underpants  

and they have to have body cavity searches i  think you're exaggerating we have to make sure  

that you don't have any any explosives hidden  inside your bum abdul is watching from malaysia

creating a team because it creates or you  will create a sense of belonging as well  

so quite often within a company you have maybe  there are certain phrases that you use i know  

in your particular company there are phrases and  there are things that you always have to remember  

and as a group those things are normally  said uh during your day-to-day work  

so quite often you will learn things  together and you will learn things as a team  

and discuss things as a team especially nowadays  because many people are using the internet they're  

using facetime and other things to to communicate  thanks to coronavirus all right louis we don't  

want to go up the eiffel tower we don't we're not  we don't want to go i don't want to but it looks  

like we'll be forced to too many people this is  going to drag us up there whether we like it or  

not too many people it's not that funny i'm only  joking but yes no i mean you you they starting  

to introduce things like team charters yeah i  i steve i would i would stop criticizing your  

company no all companies do it and you spend hours  creating these team charters and then everyone  

just ignores them no one knows what a cheap team  charter is oh so it's a it's a series of sort of  

almost like rules yes that you say in our team we  will do these things and you normally what is it  

when you assign a a word and all the letters of  that word you you have other words coming off it  

well it sounds like an acronym yes and then you  have an acronym acronym like you might have a  

team charter starts with sales and then you have  words one beginning with s like uh or a and then  

you form these little acronyms and then everybody  sort of supposedly is all bonding as you do it  

but i don't nobody really believes in it and as  soon as it's created everybody just forgets about  

it by the way if steve's boss is watching  you can send the p45 to the usual address  

when you get to my age ultimately companies just  want results by the way a p45 is what is what an  

employer will give you when they fire you or when  you lose your job we are coming towards the end

the majority of people are women now um used  to be half and half but i don't know why

get on with anyone i can mr so that just in uh  we can now confirm that steve is not a misogynist  

great i'm lucky yes i'm lucky nashad i am  to have wonderful teammates and a wonderful  

boss of course and unfortunately i am not so  fortunate because i'm surrounded by mr steve
