We were out walking yesterday

and all I can

say is spring is really in the air right now.

Everything is spring like

it is like spring has arrived.

And I have a feeling maybe it has. Look at this outside.

So there is the view right now outside my studio window looking rather nice.

The grass is starting to look greener.

Some of the trees already have their leaves.

Not all of them, but some of them and everything is rather nice to say the least.

So I am a little bit excited today

and I am very happy.

We have a busy one, by the way.

A lot of things, a lot of juicy things to talk about

when we say that something is juicy,

maybe it is something interesting,

maybe something that will make you excited.

We have a lot of things today.

We are going to take a look at my weight.

As you know, I have been losing weight over the past few weeks.

Can I just say the fact that I'm losing weight

is not a representation or any opinion

that I have about weight or the appearance of people.

It's all about health, to be honest.

Each individual is responsible for their own lifestyle and health.

I think.

So I've decided that I don't want to get too overweight

because I am at a very delicate age, shall we just say?

That's all I'm saying.

An age where maybe I have to take more care of myself.

So I have been losing a little bit of weight over the past couple of months.

We are going to find out how much weight I've lost.

I was around 13 and a half stone, so we will see today

what my weight is.

Oh, we also have another thing we are doing today.

I think I will show you this now because it is perhaps interesting.

I'm not sure today we have a little competition

Yes, I have lost weight already.

I've been losing a little bit of weight.

Nothing too serious.

But I want to lose a little bit of weight because I've realised

that I am not as healthy as I should be.

I remember a couple of years ago, in fact, maybe three or four years ago,

I think it was around 2017 or maybe 2018.

I did lose weight and that's the last time I slimmed down.

But then over time, you know what happens?

You forget about all these things and you start enjoying all

of the unhealthy food,

let's just say.

So when I do want to lose

a little bit of weight to make myself healthier,

I have noticed when I am walking, sometimes I get out of breath.

I find it very hard to catch my breath.

But recently, with my lovely long

walks, I've noticed that that no longer happens.

It doesn't happen anymore.

So because I've lost some weight and even Mr.

Steve is happy because he says I do like

Slim.

Mr. Duncan I like Slim.

I think the reason for that is because when we met

way, way in the past,

I was very slim, incredibly slim, in fact.

So we will be looking at that.

We have words and phrases connected to food,

which I suppose is slightly ironic when you think about it,

because we are talking about food idioms and here I am

talking about trying not to eat too much food.

I think a lot of people have guessed correctly, Mr.

I don't know why, but suddenly Steve became very interested

in making or baking

his own bread of all things, so I didn't realise he was doing this.

He was doing it all in secret behind my back.

But he was ordering, choosing,

trying to decide what type of bread maker to buy.

It's taken me two weeks to come to a decision that.

Mr. Duncan That sounds about right.

Yes, because I do not make decisions lightly.

I have to look at all the reviews

and decide which one is the best one.

And strangely enough, Panasonic always came out on top

for these and that's the one I went for.

Well, I was going to buy it earlier on in the week. Mr.

Duncan Yes, but I delayed because not feeling very well

and then when I went back on to order it,

which literally by complete coincidence,

was exactly the same time you were talking about it

on was that Friday, Friday, Friday.

And it had reduced by £30 in price.

So how weird.

When I was standing here on Friday talking about Mr.

Steve wanting a bread maker, he was upstairs in his office

actually ordering a bread maker, and it came yesterday and Mr.

Steve could not wait. He went into the kitchen.

This is Mr.

Steve this morning in the kitchen, and I'm sure Steve will help us

by describing what we are seeing on the screen.

Here we go There all the different ingredients.

You've got flour with salt in there and a bit of sugar

you've got water and there's the yeast.

Yeast, yeast.

Yeast is very important and a little bit of butter, as you can see on that yellow plate there.

What is that the yeast do. Well that helps the bread.

You need the yeast for the bread to rise, for the dough to rise.

And that's little, that's what they call instant yeast or quick yeast

which you, you use for bread making.

So in that in the, in the flour I've mixed sugar

and I've mixed soaked according to the recipe and

that is the

inside of the bread maker with the heating element.

It's a it's an amazing looking machine and it's huge.

You see, I thought when Mr.

Steve got it out of the box, I thought it was a printer for printing photographs.

So it looked like that. Yeah.

So there it is.

There's the little container that you put all of the ingredients in.

That's right.

So I was just breaking up the

the fact that I'd forgotten because I used to make bread when I was younger. Mr.

Duncan Okay.

You know, traditionally making it

by kneading it, putting it in a in a warm place to allow it to rise.

Can I just say making bread by hand is a very long and tedious process.

But this machine does everything. It is.

So I won't I well, we haven't we hadn't tasted it yet

because it was only ready half an hour before we came on.

And so what we're doing now, so we're putting obviously we put in the ingredients

into the bread pan.

That's called the bread pan.

So you have to do it in a specific order. Yeah.

Uh, according to these bread making machines,

I didn't realise that what I, what I love about this is it just does everything.

So I really thought you were going to have to do something yourself.

But you don't.

You just put everything in there and you'll see in a moment. Mr.

Steve just puts it straight in the machine

after adding some water as well.

So you have to do everything in a very precise way.

Fairly, yes.

I'm not quite sure why you have to put the yeast in the bottom

and then you have to put the the dry

ingredients in and then you have to pour the water in carefully.

Now, I would have thought it would have all gone, all gloopy,

but if you look at that, I would have thought that's not going to work.

No, it's all going to go weird with the water like that.

But I don't.

But obviously it doesn't. And how long does it take?

4 hours.

So for a basic loaf of bread and all of the all of the things

the machine does for you and I will, Steve, carefully.

But you have

to sort of do you have to sort of put it in and twist.

Okay.

And there's a little paddle paddle at the bottom of that,

uh, bread tin and that will

it sort of needs it.

Yeah, it's, it needs the dough so it mixes everything around and then, and then it slowly becomes solid.

And I would imagine also there has to be a period of time

where it is it is doing nothing.

It is just slowly heating up to allow the bread or the dough to rise.

So, yeah, 4 hours, it's quite a long time, but apparently

that's why they're so good, the Panasonic ones, because they take a long time.

Now, guess how much this customers are doing.

Well, I don't really want to talk about that because it does sound as if we're advertising this,

but we're not.

I just want to I just want to say how much people think,

because I would have thought I've wanted a bread maker for years.

And the only reason I'm getting one now is because our lovely bread shop is closed down and much.

Wenlock said, Well, we can buy buys packet bread.

Okay. Which is revolting.

So tell us about the machine.

Yeah. So there we go. It's got various settings.

I mean, I've only just used them.

We go, I've gone for the basic one at the top, basic bread for 4 hours.

It sets that automatically and you can, you can have a

you can have, you can adjust the crust how much it bakes

so you can have a medium crust, a light crust or dark crust. Yes.

Uh, and there's all sorts of different

types of bread you can make in there, all sorts of different types of bread.

I've just come from the basic one today.

All this made lots of comment.

She said that she's using

she's using a Panasonic bread maker.

Guess how much it costs?

Come on, give us some guesses.

All of you watching, uh, see,

See how much you think it costs to buy a bread maker?

Now, I've worked out that

it will make bread for half the cost of packet loaf in the shops.

Okay, so

it's going to take about 100 loaves to pay for itself.

Yeah, that's a lot of bread.

Wow. When you think about it, that's only like, probably not even six months.

But we used to three loaves a week.

Okay, Steve, I've got to stop you here, because this

this is about to turn into you working things out again, the gaps,

we all know it's not very interesting, however, for me to talk about it.

Well, so how much was it? Well, I'm asking for people.

I'm asking for guesses. Okay.

That ones.

Yeah. 4 hours. It is a long time.

You can set it to like on a timer

so you can

put all the ingredients in, go to bed and have it.

Come on.

You know, it's sort of 4:00 in the morning and then you've got bread ready for when you get up.

Imagine not waking up in the morning to fresh bread.

I like the sound of that. I know.

We want to see the result, Mr. Steve. You will.

I've got the loaf in. I can always go and fetch it.

Steve, you don't have to do that because we have it here on my system.

If you remember it, I literally took a photograph of it.

And we have it. I know it. Yeah.

So would you like to see the finished product on the screen right now?

that we we made this morning.

And that is what it looked like when it came out. Yes.

Now, I have to say, you know, Steve, that I don't get impressed by things very easily.

I'm very hard to impress,

but I

am impressed with that.

Well, I'll tell you what, You'll be even more impressed with Mr.

Duncan,

and that is the cost of this machine.

So we've had one gas.

Well, Alexander says £40 and that's at the low end.

It was a little bit more than that. Olga said £200.

The answer is somewhere in the middle.

It was £99. Yes.

So that's about €110,

which I think for what that is,

you know, that's very cheap and it will pay for itself Once

I've once we've baked no 50 loaves, it would have paid for itself.

No hundred lives. Okay.

It's just, uh, compared to what you can buy in the shops and it'll be nicer, hopefully.

And we will cut it open after this livestream,

and we will put some jam on it and some butter, and we'll see if it's been.

If it's not, I'm sending it back.

Steve, mainly because I try to work on YouTube and anyone will tell you, if you try to

work on YouTube, you will not make much money from it because they don't really pay you Well.

I got the prize that was like a mid-range model, the cheapest one.

They normally were at sort of £90,

but I got the one above it because it was in a sale at £30 off.

So I was really pleased that and yes, it will make brown bread, it'll make any bread,

any bread you want, it will make, it will even make beautiful

French style brioche. Yes.

All it changes is the ingredients and then the machine works it out for itself.

So anyway, that's enough about our bread machine, I think.

Uh, but yeah.

Yeah, well, I'm hoping it tastes as nice as what I used to make when I was younger.

Yes, I used to make it every week at

when I was,

you know, probably about ten, 15, ten.

I yes, I used to love doing it.

I just can't imagine a ten year old Mr.

Steve in the kitchen making bread.

Well, maybe I was 12, 13 or something like that.

But, you know, it takes a long time. Morning, virtually.

If you do it yourself, you have to looking at it, kneading it, adding this.

So we're thinking of opening our own bread shop. Yes.

And we might sell it from the from the front door of the house.

So we might be doing that.

We'll see how many types of bread we can make.

So although I think I think we might have to buy a few more bread makers,

we might have to have about ten or 15 of them in the kitchen or running at the same time.

I'd say to the we're going to open our own bread shop.

And of course people are commenting that

that your diet is now, of course, over effectively over

because all you're going to be eating is bread.

So it's going to really affect your your diet.

I have to say I do like eating bread.

I can't I can't pretend I don't like eating bread because I really do.

I do love it. But I have cut back.

We will be looking, by the way, in a few moments at my weight, I weighed myself.

I had to be very careful.

By the way, one thing I realised this morning, I was going to feel myself

going onto the scales Steve in the bathroom.

And then I realised because you have to do it naked, of course you have to take all your clothes off.

That's the only way of working out what your true weight is.

The only problem is when I looked down I realised the reflection.

You couldn't see the dials?

No, the reflection of me

in the nude, which

was clearly visible in the glass that I was standing on

because the the scales are made of glass.

So they're very reflective.

And I realised you could see everything,

everything that's you just putting people off their affair.

They didn't.

So all of the flour hasn't been converted by the yeast.

So it's not really the same bread.

But if you do it at home, you can take your time.

So we could actually have some lovely sour dough bread,

for example, that has to be fermented for is it 5 hours?

But I think it's 24 hours.

You have to you have to do something like a starter.

so you have to leave that bubbling away for 24 hours and then the bread itself takes a lot longer to cook.

This morning I was around 13 and a half stone

So if I lost much weight.

Well, the answer is not really.

Well, I've lost I think I have lost about ten,

maybe ten stone, ten times,

So I was heading towards one stone, but not quite.

And for those, of course, Mr.

Steve is going to wonder what it is in kilograms.

That is around 80 kilograms something.

So that is what I weigh at the moment.

So I have lost some weight.

I've lost about six kilograms and haven't know six or seven kilograms.

I would say okay, so yeah,

I've lost some weight, so I've lost some weight.

I've kind of done what I wanted to do, which was lose some weight.

So I have.

In what period of time have you lost that weight?

It's around two and a half, getting on for three months.

So I've been steadily doing it, but I haven't been going crazy

trying to lose lots of weight,

just a little bit more exercise, cutting down on junk and rubbish and that's it, really.

So I haven't really been changing everything that I do in my life.

Just more exercise and being more careful of the things I eat.

I can still have my my little treats, so I still have nice things

occasionally, but I don't have them every day.

So things were like before the Taliban came back in charge

and there was a thriving film

industry in Afghanistan and then all of it suddenly stopped.

It was all brought to an end and also a very similar situation in Iran as well.

So there is an Iranian film industry,

but I would imagine it's quite heavily censored.

You see, we are here to teach English, to talk about the English language.

we are going to talk about a subject that is very close to my heart,

sometimes too close to my heart,

where looking at food idioms, Mr.

So there are many ways of using food,

maybe words connected directly to food

maybe ways of preparing food perhaps,

and also specific types of food,

actual food that can be used in

certain phrases.

So we are going to look at those right now.

Mr. Steve Goods is another one.

So we had Pedro's suggestion earlier,

who who is the bread winner?

This one Who Who brings in the dough? Yes.

Okay, Steve, kind of we're doing this one first. Okay.

Bring home the bacon.

Bring home the bacon.

I think this is a great expression.

Of course, bacon is something that is well, it's actually processed pork.

We don't really eat

lot of bacon, do we, because it's quite heavily processed.

Very salty, full of nitrites.

Yes. It's got all sorts of things in intuitive, including.

Yes and colouring as well to change the colour

of the actual meat so it looks more appetising.

This isn't the sort of

this isn't the phrase you would really.

Well, tell us what it means first, Mr. Duncan.

If you bring home the bacon, it means you are bringing home something that is useful to your family.

It is helping your family to live or to sustain themselves.

Maybe you are bringing something back that is useful

or you are earning something or gaining something that will be useful

to you, your family and it will help you to support them.

You bring home the bacon.

So it is it is very similar

to breadwinner.

It means the person that that really brings in the most money probably doesn't it

or brings in a lot of money go out,

go to work and bring home the bacon.

Your wife might say to you if you're lazily

sitting there not doing anything,

I, I mean, obviously bacon is

is is probably when this phrase was invented

it was 700 years ago with something

bacon was was was probably seen as quite

an expensive cut of meat.

It was I mean when we were growing up, bacon was expensive.

Well, it's what it actually is.

Is it is it it's a basic commodity

because bacon and cured meat.

Well, cured cured meat has been around since I think you'll find since Roman times.

I think they were they were curing meat.

So bacon is a type of cured meat preserved kept.

But over the years of course it is now

considered quite an unhealthy thing to eat, to be honest.

It is.

And it's not the kind of expression you would use if you were a certain religion.

You know, it's restricted in its use around the world.

Maybe. Yes.

Phrase, yes, maybe if you well I don't think the phrase is outlawed now, but you just want to use it.

It's just, you know, anyway.

Oh, are we really that insensitive?

I don't think so.

I think they are inserting religion, bringing home the bacon.

Unless, of course, you are a muslim or a Jew, in which case you may.

People watch the world, you know.

They bought the nice presents and then you went out in the evening for a meal.

You took your loved one out for a meal, and then in come

the people that work in the in the restaurant

and they come in with a cake or something or they sing Happy Birthday.

Is this in real time?

And you might say, Oh, I've had such a lovely day, but that's the cherry on the cake.

Or the icing on the cake is another phrase.

Yes, similar thing, similar thing.

The perfect finish, the perfect detail

that makes everything else fantastic already.

Good.

But then you just add one little extra thing and then it makes it perfect.

I'm trying to think of another example because it's good to give lots of.

Oh, well, I think that example that you gave there,

well, we all lived through it.

It was like it was really happening in real time. Yes.

Anyway, here's another one, Steve.

I mentioned this earlier, by the way.

It's a rude one.

It's rude.

Rarely do you.

So there's going to be a rude one meet and two French.

So this is what I mentioned earlier.

That's quite suitable for today?

Something is your bread and butter? Yes, that's it.

That means that show, that's the main thing that you do or the thing that you're best at.

Would you say the thing, The thing that you do that

also means you can make a living from it?

So in my case, uh, when I was working in sales,

my bread and butter were my, were my customers.

I would say, yeah, get going to see my customers.

I would you would describe them as my bread and butter because without,

without the customers then I wouldn't have sold anything.

What's another example, Mr. Duncan?

Well, anything, anything that brings in a living or something that that allows you to earn money,

your bread and butter, it is the thing that allows you to survive or live it.

So literally, bread And butter

is the most basic food, but it is food that most people eat at some point.

So it is it is the thing that allows you to keep surviving you.

It's a bit like, to be honest, it's a little bit like bringing home the bacon.

Something is your bread and butter.

It is the thing that helps you to survive and live

in this world to get another. Yes.

Yeah.

Well, that was a good example, what you say. Yes.

But it's always nice to have other examples, um.

We've got lots of suggestions from people here for ideas for food.

We'll go through yours first and then if they don't come up, then I wrote them out.

So we do another one to water down something.

What happens, Steve, If you water down

something again, this is something that can be used

literally or figuratively.

So you might have some orange juice and you want to give the orange juice

to lots of people, but there is only a small amount of orange

juice in the bottle, so you might add some water.

So there will be more of it.

I think that's what Jesus did with the wine.

I think he just put lots of water into one bottle

and then it made lots and lots wine for everyone to enjoy.

If you water down something, it means you make it weaker.

You add something, you get more,

but it is not as strong, the flavour is not as strong.

We can also say if you make something not so strict

or not so strong, maybe a law,

maybe a rule you might water down that law.

You make it not so strict.

Maybe you reduce the punishment you water down.

So in that particular we are using it figuratively and it's normally used in a sort of a negative way.

You often hear

politicians from other from

other parties criticising the government who might have brought out a certain proposal

and then they will accuse them later and then they realise it's unworkable.

And then they

changed the, uh,

the details of this new law and then the opposition will say or cry.

It's a watered down proposal.

So in other words, it's not as good as it originally was.

Fancy.

That's what you're inferring there, that if you water down a proposal

or a law or an idea something at work,

then it means that it's probably not as good it was before,

possibly because it was unworkable in its in its original form.

For example, here's here's an example at the moment related Cars.

Mr. Duncan says the EU okay,

the EU has got there had this proposal in place

that, there would be no more cars with internal combustion

in the Netherlands after 2030.

That's it, Cliff edge.

You can only buy electric cars after then.

But they've they they've watered down this proposal only last week.

They've already now extended it to 2035.

So there's a lot of criticism of people actually using that phrase

that the EU watering down their proposal for,

you know, getting greener and and and

going towards a net zero and all that kind of rubbish.

Well I won't say rubbish but it's that.

Yes. So yeah, you watered down something, it's usually used negatively.

Maybe you are finding out what is new in their life.

You chew the fat, maybe

you are discussing a certain subject.

Yeah, the suggestion is that you're giving in to you.

The suggestion is that you're not really talking about anything serious

when you say chew the fat, it's almost like.

And it tends to be used for men, isn't it?

When men get together and talk, I think.

I don't think because Yeah, let's, let's chew

the fat is usually something that I think

would be used to describe sort of men getting together in a pub

and just sort of moaning and groaning about things and,

and just airing their grievances

about what's going on in life at the moment.

So general discussion about anything maybe in business, people could sit down over dinner

and chew the fat, not, not the actual meal,

but maybe something to do with their business.

They just talk it over, to talk something over.

We will have a couple of more.

So a hot potato is something that you can't hold in your hand very long.

You can't hold it for a long time.

You have to pass it on to someone else.

You can't hold it.

You can't keep talking about that particular subject.

You might describe it as a hot potato.

I'm sure we can think of many things at the moment.

Politics, perhaps.

Maybe something connected to world events.

Trends.

Well, I wasn't going to say anything particular. You're.

I'm just saying that's

a bit of a hot potato at the moment because the idea is with a hot potato as well as it

is, it's a subject that can cause controversy because when do you think about it?

Yeah, I could just said so.

You know, you get into lots of arguments like Brexit's a hot potato.

Still, it's a hot potato, which is one of those subjects.

You talk about it lots of people get upset and they take take their sides and get into the silos.

And you know that.

That's interesting, isn't it?

Something people avoid talking about might also be described as a hot potato,

perhaps something that's that maybe is taboo

or maybe something that you should avoid talking about.

So it's it's a little bit of a hot potato.
