hasn't the week gone quickly i think this week  has gone really fast by the way a lot of people

complaining this week about one particular thing  can you guess what it is i will give you a clue  

it is all in reference to a certain celebration

a certain commemoration if you will that happened  this week so a lot of people getting really angry  

certain people saying oh i'm so angry about it i'm  

why do people have to do that why do why do  they insist on doing that particular thing  

find out later on what it is for those who don't  know who i am well you are the the lucky ones  

that's all i can say you are definitely lucky  because you don't know who i am however that  

is all about to change my name is mr duncan i talk  about english you might say that i am a little bit  

of an english addict actually that's why i like  english so much i can't get enough of it in fact i  

love it so much i quite often come on the internet  and talk about it live right now that's what  

you're looking at you see this is this is what  is happening right now on your computer device

so now you know what that's all about  

we have made it to the end of another weekend  and also the end of another week yes it is sunday

i don't know why my sunday looks so big but it  is a big sunday it's a special sunday because  

we are all here together again it's so nice to  see you here once more right here on youtube

been a busy week here i will be honest with you we  have had a rather busy week in the uk in fact the  

big discussion that's been taking place over the  past week discussing the future of planet earth

all i can say is so far i haven't heard  anything that makes me think or believe  

that anyone is going to do anything to  change the environment i don't think anyone  

really cares especially those in power to be  honest i think it's all about making money

see greta thunder she was swearing and getting  rather excited i think my own personal opinion  

i think she is a little annoyed because she  wasn't invited to speak at the cop 26 summit  

so i think greta is actually a little annoyed  because she wasn't asked to come along  

that's the reason why she was outside getting  rather angry and saying things that were well  

they were not repeatable i can't say them  if i said what she said i would get thrown

we are heading ever closer to not only the end  of the year but also christmas as well this  

week this week lots of the big supermarket chains  lots of the big department stores here in the uk  

they launched their christmas  advertisements on television and already  

this always happens every year already people  are arguing and fighting about it and they're  

saying oh we don't like the new christmas  adverts you don't even see santa claus anymore  

where's father christmas where is he  we don't even see father christmas  

anymore in the christmas adverts and  it's supposed to be about christmas

so people are getting their knickers in a  twist if you get your knickers in a twist  

it means you get rather  annoyed and angry about things

english language when you say the english language  do you mean your own understanding and use of the  

english language is that what you mean i think so  one of the best ways to learn english and i know i  

say this all the time and i know i say it every  time i come on to the internet but the best way  

to learn english is to learn learn new words every  day that's a good one but also you have to make  

english part of your life something that you do  every day that involves using english that's it  

really and i suppose the the most important rule  is to keep going don't give up even if things  

seem difficult even if it feels as if you are not  learning as quick as you want or as you would like  

don't give up don't stop do it every day make  english part of your life so that is the simplest  

way of expressing the secret to learning  english there are lots of people on youtube  

by the way who say that they can teach  you english in just 30 days can i just say  

you can't you can't learn english in 30 days  a lot of people are selling training programs  

and teaching material saying yes you can  learn english in 30 days you can't you cannot  

do that it is impossible but a lot of people  like to say that they can do magic or do the  

most amazing things possible especially when  it comes to teaching there are a lot of people  

out there who make some rather extravagant  claims about their ability to teach i think so

topic today i will be talking a little bit later  on with mr steve oh by the way mr steve is very  

excited but also he's very involved with a task  a very important task which he will be explaining  

in the only way mr steve knows  how and that is in a very long  

drawn-out way if you explain something in a drawn  out way it means you talk for something for a  

very long time it takes you a long time to get  to the point of what you are trying to say but  

mr steve will be here talking about something  he saw yesterday that made him rather excited  

there aren't many things in this world that make  mr steve excited but the one he saw yesterday made  

him rather giddy with excitement we are talking  about gender specific occupations mr duncan  

that sounds like a big topic well maybe for some  people it is a big topic but i think it's quite  

interesting as we we are going through a certain  phase of human development where new things  

come along to challenge how we see the people  around us or should i say other people around us  

so we are talking about jobs occupations that  may or may not be gender specific and by that  

i mean you would associate a certain gender with  that job so we are talking about that a little bit  

later on because it's quite interesting i think  it's an interesting subject anyway we also have

spell at the moment here in england it's crazy  i don't know what's going on with the weather  

at the moment but it's quite mild very i  suppose the word i'm looking for is warm  

mild warm it is unseasonably warm today and  there it is a view from the window looking  

outside and you can see it's rather nice we  have blue sky we have a lot of autumn color  

spread around at the moment even the mountain can  you see the hill in the distance even the hill  

appears to be turning autumnal now as  many of the trees start to turn brown  

and gold so it's looking  rather nice at the moment but  

i would say that today is mild pleasant in fact  i suppose i should have gone outside really  

i should have done my live stream outside  the only thing is it's also windy we  

have a little bit of wind today blowing around  and we are not talking about mr steve's stomach

and all the things connected  to it nothing like that

it is not unusual one of the hardest parts of  learning english is not just learning new words  

it isn't just remembering the words but also  it is using the words as well when you come  

to speak so i think and this is something  that is not unusual so don't worry about  

it i am here to reassure you  and put your mind at rest that  

speaking is one of the hardest parts of learning  any language whatever it is german french spanish  

whatever it is the hardest part is speaking  the language but it is something that you learn  

slowly over time one of the biggest problems  of course is confidence having confidence  

to actually speak but just like everything  you learn those things over time

mr steves steve has had this tie for many years  and i found it one day in his wardrobe hanging up  

and i thought to myself

i would like to own that tie so now i do and  that's why i wear it on my live streams but  

i quite like this and a lot of people today  commenting on my little badges can you see the  

badges i have my smiley faces because as i like to  say there is no crime in being happy never worry  

about having a smile on your face whatever other  people say it doesn't matter it really doesn't

very nice thank you very much summer has gone  autumn is here it really does feel as if autumn  

has arrived it really does and you know what  happens when autumn comes shortly after that

we often associate the end of the year certainly  when we are talking about seasons with winter

winter will be coming as well although this year  

that there are no forecasts for  whether or not we'll be getting snow

so at the moment no one really knows if we are  going to get snow no one is going to dare to  

try and guess so every year we always have  reports that winter is going to be terrible  

or mild but this year no one is making a guess  i i'm not sure why but no one seems willing to  

make a guess at what the weather will be like  during this winter we are going to take a short  

break and then mr steve will be coming into the  studio i want mr steve to feel comfortable you see  

so that's the reason why we always have a little  break before steve arrives he has to come in  

he has to feel comfortable it's a little  bit like having a new animal in your house  

you have to calm them down you have to stroke them  gently and that's what i have to do with mr steve

have you ever been stuck for words have you ever  been in a situation where you could not think  

what to say there are many ways of describing this  occurrence we can say that you are tongue-tied you  

have been left speechless you are stuck for words  you cannot find the words to express yourself  

your mind has gone blank there are many reasons  why you might find yourself unable to speak  

perhaps you are in a state of shock or surprise  an unexpected event can leave you speechless  

the surprise can be a nice thing or it can  be something not so nice such as bad news  

if you are giving a speech to a group  of people you might find that your brain  

suddenly stops working you become  nervous and cannot remember what to say  

i'm ever so sorry my mind has gone blank after a  sudden surprise you might only be able to say i'm  

speechless you have become  tongue-tied and stuck for words  

if you try to remember the thing you wanted to  mention you might say it's on the tip of my tongue

a continuing debate in english usage is the  question of when to use who and when to use whom  

according to formal grammar who forms the  subjective case and so should be used in subject  

position in a sentence as in who decided this the  form whom on the other hand forms the objective  

case and so should be used in object position in a  sentence as in whom do you think we should support  

to whom do you wish to speak although there are  some speakers who still use who and whom according  

to the rules of formal grammar as stated here  there are many more who rarely use whom at all  

its use has retreated steadily and is  now largely restricted to formal contexts  

the normal practice in modern english is to  use who instead of whom and where applicable  

to put the preposition at the end of  the sentence who do you wish to speak  

to who do you think we should support such uses  today are broadly accepted in standard english

i'm very interested i'm i'm really intrigued  hello hello hello mr duncan hello hello what  

are you doing carry on it's okay oh right don't  be shy look at this one yeah no i was just um  

hello everyone well what are you doing well  what i'm doing is i'm checking out bulbs  

you're checking i'm checking all the bulbs  in the house yes to see if they are the new  

type oh made in holland well i love it no one  can actually see what you're doing can't they

what an interesting bulb no one no one could see  what steve was doing here's the old-fashioned  

tungsten filament bulb yes so these are the  ones now that you can't buy 60 watt steve  

i know these are the ones you can't buy anymore  this is my frustration mr duncan these have  

these have become illegal these are now illegal if  you are found to have any of these in your house  

the police will come they will kick down your door  they will drag you into the street and they will  

beat you with cucumbers worse than that mr duncan  they will strip all the lights out of your house  

and force you to fit led bulbs everywhere in your  house you see this is as we say the old-fashioned  

tungsten filament 60 watt bulb uh that's probably  going to be worth a thousand pounds in about 10  

years time i just love the way steve steve steve  is showing you something but then he goes off  

he says look at this look at this thing that  i'm showing you now look at it can you see it  

and i'm going no no stephen of course then we  moved uh probably about 10 years ago onto these um  

miniature what are these mr duncan these are your  the ones that everyone's got around their house at  

the moment fluorescent yes sort of miniature there  we go yes um 1 200 lumens well these are supposed  

to be long life can i just say the biggest con  ever but they're not they're not mr duncan you're  

wrong you're wrong wrong wrong wrong they do  last a long time anyway we're arguing already  

now you see the thing is i'm not a long story  short i'll keep with me we are running out of  

these and we've got to replace them  with low energy bulbs but unfortunately  

low energy bulbs a lot of them you can't  dim and uh they're quite expensive you  

can't dim them what do you mean they're  not dimmable so you can't reduce the lumens

lumens everyone knows about  luminosity you don't have to shout  

you told me to do this with while restarting mr  duncan all right i didn't tell you to do it i  

just said do it without sounding like a nutcase  uh so the these i think these are the biggest  

con ever they're not because they're steve oh you  know what i'm going to swear today are you going  

to hit me over the head with a lamp bulb no a  lamp bulb is that what they call this a lamp bulb  

miniature well you've got to be careful with those  because if you drop them yes you've got to vacate  

the room have you and open all the windows because  mercury vapor yes okay steve very careful can i  

just get to my point go on then it's like it's  like being with someone from a psychiatric ward  

these are the biggest con ever shut up by the  way shut up don't say anything they're supposed  

to last for 10 years but they don't i remember  when these were first marketed they said these  

bulbs will last for 10 years can i say they don't  sometimes they don't even last for 10 months  

so it depends some of them do do last a long time  but i've found that these can be quite unreliable  

you've got to get a good make yes see that's  phillips okay steve i bet there's a date on there  

because when i bought these i put dates on them  so that i could check how long they were lasting  

that there we go look at that okay steve rush  today doesn't matter what steve stop shouting  

i'm not shouting i'm just talking normally  mister you're talking like you're insane yes  

it says it says 1201 which i presume is december  2001. and it's still working yes but it's been  

in the draw for nine years anyway mr duncan  uh we i don't want to bore people with bulbs  

uh the point was the point was i'm trying to get  to a point here steve we're trying to replace  

some light bulbs but of course now a lot of the  the old style bulbs i've just explained this  

yes and i'm explaining it again in normal  language the the these these to me i always  

think these are the best light bulbs i don't  know why they they give the nicest light  

and i like i like the sound they make when  you shake them they make a little noise  

and sometimes if if they if they blow if they stop  working you get a little inside i don't think we  

need that mr duncan great it's a great sound  but nowadays we have we have these new fangled  

light bulbs you sound very old-fashioned when you  say that mr duncan we're moving from incandescent  

through to fluorescent and now to led yes and  you can get you know nice sort of soft light i  

think eventually we will have virtual light so  it's light that's not real but it's virtual so  

you have to put up a special headset on your on  over your eyes to actually see the virtual light

is there anything there steve there's lots of wax  mr duncan lots of wax okay you'd have to say it  

twice we heard it the first time well that's for  the viewers uh no i'm not prepared for christmas  

uh a lot of people ask you a lot of people asking  about christmas christmas may as well not happen i  

don't do anything until december uh because it's  december the 23rd just don't do anything until i  

don't even think about christmas to december  i know there are people and i've got friends  

who buy all their christmas christmas presents in  the summer yeah and wrap them up in preparation  

for christmas see iris think it's it's a danger  buying the christmas gifts too early because  

the person might change their mind they  might say in july please buy me a new  

hat but then just before christmas they say can  you please not buy me a new hat can you buy me  

some new socks instead and and and you've  already wrapped them up so you have to go  

and unwrap them yes unwrap the gifts and change  them so you might actually end up having more  

things to do i would be interested please tell us  which type of bulb you have to use in your country  

if it's an eu country i'm guessing tungsten is  out fluorescent and led are in but if you're in  

a non-eu country maybe you can just use whatever  you like um i don't know it's not very interesting  

but i think it is good don't forget steve  what screwing yes screwing yeah that's it yes  

i'm so glad i mentioned that yes so you  can see here this particular bulb has  

a little thread this particular one is called an  edison screw or an e27 uh and uh or the e37 but in  

the uk we've got this bayonet yes but even those  are going now i know whether you push push it in  

and turn it you have to push it up i think they're  unique to the uk you push it in and then twist it  

so times i've said that there it is look at that  so that one that one screws oh that's it and and  

you can get you can get a screw one that's half  the size of that you've got so many different we  

only used to have in the uk that's all we ever  had was the push in and turn that's it and now  

we've got all these eu sizes we've got this one  we've got one that's half the size then you've  

got different ones for how oh it's so confusing mr  duncan you never know what bulb to get as you can  

see mr steve is completely confused you've got  to just you've got to decide now on what type  

of bulge you get do you get fluorescent or do you  get led what is the fitting uh and then you've got  

to look at the wattage to see what brightness you  want and not only that now you've got to look at  

are you going to have a white light or are you  going to have a warm light uh this i've been on  

the internet all morning trying to figure out  which bulbs to get poor mr steve and another  

complication because we have in the living room  mr duncan switches that allow the lights to be  

dimmed yeah so dimmer switches so if you want to  control if you want to control the mood yes you  

can if you have i don't know maybe you are having  a romantic meeting with someone in your house  

the bright lights will put them off there's no  way there's no way there is no way you're going  

to have any hanky-panky so what you do you turn  the lights down you dim the lights so everything  

is more seductive yes but the problem mr duncan  is that if you've got uh the modern bulbs  

even if they say they're dimmable the led ones  uh are we losing listeners probably ah viewers  

viewers we have viewers it's video there's  a camera there even if it says it's dimmable  

it won't work apparently i've discovered yesterday  with dim dimmer switches that you've got that are  

designed to be used with tungsten bulbs so  you've got to change your dimmer switches  

i mean it's just outrageous i wonder what  david starkey thinks i think we'll buy a  

load of these uh old-fashioned bulbs and stock up  on them does david starkey think we should have  

old style light bulbs what does he think let's  see what he thinks david starkey what do you  

think do you say yes or no oh no he's saying no  no david starkey doesn't want them no i think it's  

safe to say mega likes your tie i love the fact  that steve doesn't listen to a word i'm saying

my time steve from a shop that sells ties yes it  sells clothes you must have these in your country  

so not from a garage no so a shop that sells  clothes from shops that shops can't sell anymore  

so shops yes what's that shop i  go to what's it called i don't  

know i don't you know the discount  shop where you go and get all your  

all your brands at very cheap prices tk maxx  tk maxx in the uk we've got tk maxx are you  

probably all over are you being sponsored by them  no but i that's where i go for my expensive ties  

okay because i'm not going to spend 25 pounds on  a tithe of work can i just be honest with you i i  

think i preferred it when we were talking about  light bulbs i think that was more interesting  

that made me feel when i was at work that made me  feel dynamic you know the zigzags i'm going places

and it used to confuse the customers you know i  could say anything to them they'd look at my time  

they'd be hypnotized and they'd just buy anything  i can't believe this tie has caused such a fuful  

that's a tip for tomek uh a sales technique buy  a tie that confuses your customers and hypnotizes  

them they're so distracted by your tie i'm hungry  they just go pardon what you're saying you say oh  

you said you were gonna buy a hundred oh fine  yeah just but yeah sign here thank you bye i'm  

hungry i haven't eaten anything i  i'm so hungry i might eat my tie  

but don't eat that one that must have been an  expense it wasn't expensive i know it wasn't  

because i got it from tk maxx okay for you and  uh probably a fraction of the original price

you're never like this away from youtube no i'm  the complete opposite whatever you see now think  

of the opposite and that's what i'm like yeah and  i'm not miserable downbeat negative steve although  

i think one of the reasons why you are excited  today because you saw something that made you  

very well you sat up you sat up straight and  you were going oh my goodness look at that  

he was looking at the rear end yes of something  something very very attractive yes he was looking  

at the rear end i followed it for miles you were  following something with a beautiful rear end  

in fact you couldn't take your eyes off  it now luckily you know i could keep up  

but uh you know i had a wave and sort  of i did a bit of a thumbs up okay

was it was it one of these this was the rear end  that i was looking at so that's the rear end the  

back end that mr steve was looking at yesterday  there it is on the motor that way no because i  

wasn't looking at it like that i was looking at  it like that i don't know but it's not exactly  

that's better i've been having an accident had  i been looking at it at that angle that's better  

there you go so yes mr steve was driving  behind one of these you hold it i know because

i've never known anyone to have such a  lack of perspective when on camera my show  

yes there we go forward mustang  i followed one yesterday  

in a way i was pleased to see it in another  way i wasn't because i was just so disappointed  

to notice instantly yes that there were only  two exhaust pipes which means only one thing  

cheapskates only bought the two-liter engine  so they were driving this flashy car this  

amazing car yes but they had the the the most  pathetic engine they hadn't got the quad pipes  

at the back quad means four four exhaust pipes  on a ford mustang you know you've got the v8  

which is the only engine you should ever buy for  that car if you don't you're a total loser okay  

steve it's true yeah it's true in your opinion  oh my gosh in most people's opinion no not in  

most people's but that he might be happy  maybe that's all maybe he can't afford  

a a big engine look if you can  afford 50 000 pounds to get the v8  

five-liter ford mustang why scrimp what if  no if you can afford 45 000 pounds to get  

the 2-liter engine well it's gone down in price  surely you can afford another 5 000 to get the  

eight cylinder version i mean you're already  spending 45 000. oh my god just spend another five  

and be happy uh of course greta thundberg would  not approve i in any way shape or form i know  

i know what greta would say do you know what she  would say steve go on she would say how dare you  

exactly yes she has no truck with anybody driving  yes trucks she has no truck well any car probably  

anyway steve you are now going into the realm of  rambling but this is i think this i do like the  

paint job on this one so if you do ever get  a steve if you ever get a if you ever get a  

if you ever get a ford mustang steve steve  yes i'm listening i don't think you are i am  

listening please get one that looks like this it  also could you make it bigger than this because  

because we can't get in this one exactly yes well  interestingly enough olga says can we go back to  

bulbs please i understand nothing about cars and  engines well just remember one thing if you ever  

get the chance to buy a ford mustang do not go but  never go for a small engine in any car is what i  

say you'll always regret it isn't that nice what  i like about this is you can open the the things  

you can it's actually got an engine i love the  fact that this it's got the strut brace this mod

we have no choice however certain  occupations and jobs are often seen as being  

gender specific in that we often associate  one particular sex or gender as doing that job  

so i'm not talking about the  gender of people i'm talking about  

genders that are often associated with certain  jobs so what we actually say is gender specific  

and i thought it would be interesting to have a  quick look at that particular word first of all  

so we are looking at gender specific occupations  jobs that you might think only a certain gender  

would do but if something is specific if something  specific or exact we are often saying it is often  

associated with another thing something specific  is exact or is often associated with something  

else or another thing so the word specific can  be used in many different ways the connection  

between two things is specific maybe there is a  link between two things maybe smoking and lung  

cancer we might say that there is a specific link  between those two things we are saying that those  

two things can be associated with each other not  always but quite often something explained exactly  

can be described as being specific something you  explain exactly is described as being specific  

one particular thing that you are focusing on  mr steve for example yes yes i think so and

to name one thing that is often seen as  being connected with another is being  

expressed in a specific way you are mentioning  two things or maybe you are looking at one thing  

and then connecting it to another thing like today  we are talking about jobs that we might associate  

with a certain gender a gender specific occupation  is a job that is viewed as being carried out  

by a specific sex or gender and i'm sure there  are lots of them we can think of steve here's  

a good example here's my example first of  all and we have a list of occupations jobs  

for example nurse so when you think of a nurse  steve yes what exactly are you doing here while

they're showing hospitals doctor's surgeries these  nine 99 times out of a hundred really that person  

what that's just a phrase that you use to say if  you use that phrase most of the time so it's it's  

not not an official figure if you say nine times  out of 10 or 99 times out of 100 what you'll mean  

is that that is what normally happens uh you're  not saying a hundred percent of the time because  

steve what what what the hell are you going on  about i'm just saying i'm just explaining an  

expression mr duncan and and so whenever you  see a television program normally nine times  

out of ten if there's a nurse in it it will be  a woman yes okay quite often if you see a doctor  

yes well in this house shall we just wait until  the other things come up on the screen steve

i how do you how do you actually survive in the  world i'm i'm multitasking as we speak i can't  

i can't believe that you sit behind the wheel of  a two-ton automobile driving around at full speed

we don't uh anarchy ask that question well we know  we never specify we don't speak you can say a male  

nurse yes but officially you don't but officially  you don't but if you wanted to be specific you  

could say that you wouldn't say a female nurse you  would just say a nurse yes but if you wanted to  

identify that that nurse was a man you would say  male nurse yeah but normally you don't i suppose  

there might be situations where the nurse would  have to be a woman so maybe if you were in a ward  

in a hospital that was just for women so there  might be situations where you would expect to  

see a woman however nowadays there are female  nurses male nurses and everything in between

it's a male occupation yes definitely  because there's a whole culture  

culture that goes with lorry drivers same with a  culture that yet there is a because truck drivers  

all meet up at truck stops yes well and it's  it's a sort of a it's a very much a man's world  

i think if you were going to be a woman doing  a truck driver's job i think you would find it  

lonely unless you were prepared to really get  in with the sort of male lorry driving culture  

so which uh do you realize that would be every  lawyer drivers fantasy probably well yes well i  

think you would have to be a particular well even  for a man you've got to be a certain character  

you've got to be to be a lorry driver i mean you  and i couldn't be lorry driving well no i have  

no interest in lorries well that's it plus  we wouldn't fit in i'm not a haulage person

you do carry lots of baggage around but he  wouldn't want to carry it around in a lorry  

that wasn't attempted a joke but anyway  yes so i mean you've got to be a certain  

type of person whether it's male or female to  be a lorry driver you've got to be you know a  

tough sort of man have you i think so yes uh  and truck stops have got their own reputation

have they oh yes because i know someone that  was a lorry driver okay he was a lorry driver  

what what happened was he banned he's retired oh  uh but yes there is a culture with that job just  

the same as there is with construction workers  brick layers you know so you what ever sex you are  

gender gender uh male female or anything in  between anything in between anything in between  

anything in between you must say that anything  between then you've got to fit in haven't you  

with that there are quite a few female bus drivers  in the uk there's a lot of female bus drivers but  

not so many lorry drivers not quite the same thing  though as a lorry driver when you think about it  

you are you you have a very different cargo you  got a yes which is why i think as a female you  

will fit in better probably with being a bus  driver because you don't have to go to truck  

stops okay you just go to bus stops instead you  just pick up people at bus stops go to the depot  

i think it's you know you don't have to  be quite so sort of macho i don't know

what so he came he met me one time it's this story  yes because when i dropped him off after this was  

in the winter so it was getting dark i dropped  him off to pick up his car by the renault garage  

and he had to make some phone calls and he said  the renault garage was in on the edges of the  

red light district okay and uh he said he  had people ladies knocking on his car window  

and he said never tell me never let me have  my car serviced there again this was my boss  

it didn't go down very well that i had told him  about having his car serviced in wolverhampton  

and he had uh ladies of the night you  know when you said that this story

there is actually a shortage of male teachers  there there is they have lots of female  

teachers but not enough men are getting into  teaching particularly in primary school okay  

so you open that door steve so once yes why do  you think well it's because a lot of a lot of  

men have been put off teaching particularly in  primary school because they are often labelled

mr duncan if i should say the word no  please don't say that i know people  

that have been teachers in primary  school and they've had a lot of hassle  

of friends off social media because  people make certain assumptions

is it similar to being a scout master  yes i see and and because of the um  

what's the phrase unlike a stigma stigma now  associated with that a lot of men won't go into  

teaching anymore they feel very vulnerable because  there have been lots of cases where students have  

deliberately made up stories of teachers trying  to chat them up let's put it very kindly yes  

and particularly with that affects particularly  obviously that's going to be the girls trying to  

cause trouble well it might it might be the  boys as well but you you can have a female  

teacher it can be you can have a female teacher  who will chase her male students around as well  

it does happen it does happen but it's not seen  as anything bad uh by who well the perception  

if you write okay so if you have uh a 30 year  old male teacher who is dating a 16 year old girl  

okay the the the press will look very unfavourably  on that the press yes the the media i'm not i'm  

i'm not about me i'm not about the law and the  law yeah but who cares what the newspapers think  

i'm just mr duncan but if it's the other way round  if if a a 16 year old boy is dating a 30 year old  

female teacher then all his everyone's going  to go walk good on you war aren't they they do  

who's saying that they do there's there's  never a problem there isn't a perce i mean  

it's illegal yes but it's not going to you  know it's seen as oh good on you you know  

it is that's how it seems i've heard it's  the other way around it's uh looked it's

just told the story yeah you can very easily get a  male teacher into a lot of trouble very easily yes  

by just in by just accusing them of something even  if they haven't done it so that alone puts off  

that's why there's a shortage of male teachers  because it puts off male teachers from going  

to teach well maybe maybe also it might just be  seen as a profession that is not manly so maybe  

it's the opposite of true it's not that mister but  it's in there not that it's in any way i think i

there women doing it well that's what up yeah they  could be now because all you've got to do is wheel  

the wheelie bin down to the refuse collector hook  it onto the thing and it it automatically justice

might be a bit demanding too demanding for some  people you know because if it's about you know  

like like working in construction for example okay  then that's you've got to be really fit to be able

well if that could get you into trouble that's  just from my experience that's that's my own  

experience how do you know they're gay mr  duncan have you asked them have you ever  

had sort of liaisons with well you know i am  i am a frequent flyer of the mile high club

it's amazing how many people you can squeeze  into one of their those airplane toilets  

they look very small but you can get at least  five people in there it's it's a bit of a squash  

but that's why that is the  reason why you're all there

if i had said that mr duncan would have thrown me  off the live stream well you wouldn't one rule for  

you you wouldn't have for me you wouldn't  have said it as well as me i think that's  

that's the point so come on women i want to see  more women becoming refuse collectors because  

it's only men it's a male-dominated world well  i mean you know in the levelling up world that  

we live in yeah where a certain occupations and  companies feel that they have to have a balance  

of genders and everything in their prof you know  that's it then in which case the refuse collecting  

uh profession is needs to be levelled up yes so  we need 50 50. yes you know you can't have that  

rule for one profession and and not apply to  come on it's it's always the it's always the  

nice jobs that the women want it's it is isn't  it it's always the oh i want to be a tv producer  

but what about refuse collecting you've got to  do refuse collecting 50 50. sorry so so there  

has to be more women doing refuse collecting that  that's it you can't get away with it definitely

oh dear yes okay mr duncan said what's next here's  another one builder so you you mentioned this just  

construction work so you you often see men working  on con construction sites yes but i i've always  

had this this interesting fantasy because quite  often build really what kind of what uh having a  

liaison with a builder no is that your fantasy mr  timmy oh can i can i just carry on yes i've i've  

always had this this image in my mind of when we  see men on a building site quite often they will  

shout and call to a beautiful woman as she goes by  they will say oh hello love hello oh hello darling  

give us a smile give us come on then come on give  us a smile but i always have this fantasy this  

image in my mind of the reverse where the women  are working on the building site and then the men  

are going by and then the women are shouting  to the men oh hello hello sexy bum hello oh  

get that shirt off well you see you see if that  was to happen it's unlikely that the the man  

would complain well but the other way around it's  a different matter yes okay you've just spoiled my  

whole fantasy my my my mother always tells me this  story when she was your mother was never a builder  

your mother worked on a building site no that's  why she has such big biceps but she tells me this  

story of when she was i don't know if i don't know  if men still wolf whistle is a wolf whistle if you  

yes that's a wolf whistle yes so men  well i don't know if that that particular  

sound is used in that particular way of whistling  is used in other countries in this country i  

don't know if men still do that because probably  they would get complaints i tell you where i am  

nowadays you know you know it does happen i think  in in places like italy i think men are still  

not ashamed of showing their excitement when they  see a beautiful woman but in this country in the  

uk and i suppose if i'm being specific england  you find now that that women do not react but  

secretly i think some women do like it well  my mother you see tells me this story okay  

of when she was a sort of a teenager yes i can't  imagine that but she obviously was a teenager once  

okay uh that she would pass this building site  uh and the men would whistle but she liked it  

oh she said oh because she's got a younger sister  and she said oh my sister never got wolf wolf  

whistled out by the builders but i always did and  she also told me that one day it happened and her  

brother was with her and her brother went up  to the builders and told them not to do it  

but uh of course my mother was  secretly annoyed because she liked  

the builders wolf whistling yes i think my  mother was quite attractive when she was younger  

i've seen i just i just have to take your  word on that yes uh yes but we're getting  

all sorts of interesting uh comments about what  you see in italy there seem to be a lot of female  

well not a lot but they seem to be refuse  collectors that are female okay quite a lot yes um  

so they might actually be a little bit further  ahead there you see yes with having having  

female refuse collectors and i think you can have  female builders it isn't often so i i again i'm  

talking about in this country you don't often see  women working on building sites carrying bricks  

on their shoulders and and going up and down  ladders and climbing across rooftops so it's not  

it's not often so maybe in that particular sense  you might say that building construction is still  

a male dominated job or trade mr steve i yes it  is uh it is again i think a lot of it's to do with  

the culture around the building trade probably  okay it's going to be difficult to i mean being  

gay would be difficult to be a gay builder just  as it's very difficult to be a gay footballer  

in fact there was a story about that this week uh  was it last week i don't know um a gay football  

maybe it was the week before came out in in i  can't remember which country no this is good i'm  

enjoying this story uh but i'm no i'm just saying  it's very that's one of the occupations you're  

a footballer where it's very very has been very  very difficult to talk about your sexuality yes uh  

because the crowds will make it very difficult for  you when you're playing football and they've been  

lots of tragic cases people have tried coming  out in the past football because in rugby it's  

fine it has been for a number you think is tougher  than football but rugby seem to have accepted uh  

non-straight men quite straight is that  the new term now well i'm trying to i'm  

always trying not to upset anybody my my  son hasn't got married yet my son hasn't  

got married maybe he's a non-straight but it it  it's um it's still very difficult in football  

yes to come out as being gay whereas other  most other professions it probably is now fine  

but probably building i bet that's difficult to  be a gay builder i bet that's very difficult i'm  

just i'm just picturing that now you see i'm just  picturing a gay builder going up the ladder in a  

jaunty way with a with a big pile of bricks on  their shoulder it's a very physical job isn't it

are there any gay golfers who who are trying  to get a hole in one i'm sorry i'm sorry about  

that i couldn't resist uh anarchy says um  anaki if you plea i i would be pleased if a  

woman builder shouted me down in the street well  exactly you wouldn't mind but but now you've got  

to be very careful if i don't know have we got any  builders watching any builders and do they whistle

at uh i didn't know that that was not  whistling by the way that was i don't know what

that's it that's the sound that builders will  make to attractive women yes as they pass by the

in women's clothes again and uh i'm going  to go past a building site yes and see if

well what do you think they might be called now  for persons because foreman immediately you would  

assume that person was a man because they always  used to be in the past whereas you would you know  

but a lot of professions now are foreman is is a  is a term yes it's it's genuine it's a bit like  

saying postman so i remember when i was a kid i  said oh the postman's here and i wouldn't even  

look out the window to see if it was a man or a  woman i just say the postman so you're not you're  

not really sort of being offensive or trying to  be offensive you're just saying what the postman  

i think foreman it means it's probably a man  who's that he's the foremost person isn't he  

the foremost yeah that's the most important person  well then that site they're the ones that make all  

the decisions that's it and control what happens  but i'm just saying how that word is derived  

what about a manhole the foremost man what about  what it means what about manhole yes manhole uh  

let's make sure that we the viewers can  understand what we're talking about here well i  

think everyone knows what a manhole is yes do you  know what a manhole is that i do indeed have you  

seen any manholes not for a long time i've i've  we've got a manhole outside our house we have

they've taken the gender they've taken any  references to gender out of a lot of jobs so i you  

know it always used to be salesman but now it's  sales person yeah and we've mentioned a few others  

because we don't want to assign genders into  occupations so that leads me to the next thing i  

wanted to mention is non-gender specific right so  that those are jobs or job titles that don't have  

gender they're not actually connected to  it yes postal worker postal delivery person  

see the ice cream man the ice cream man would come  round steve yeah and we we would always say the  

ice cream man but we never thought maybe maybe one  day the person coming around with the ice creams  

would be a woman we just used to say it's the ice  cream man it's the ice cream man yeah and that's  

it so we wouldn't think um is it a woman or a man  today selling ice creams we wouldn't care as long  

as there was ice cream do women drive ice cream  trucks probably not why because what too physical  

lifting all that heavy ice cream well i you you  get well i mean it's you get all these fights  

and wars don't you are because people have their  this has been in the news a lot in the past i mean  

it's it sounds funny it sounds like something that  would be something you might find humour in that  

but um if you are an ice cream man and somebody  else tries to sell ice creams in the street that  

you've always sold your ice creams in there people  have been killed they have fights don't they steve

so when you say whistling do you mean just  whistling generally yes or whistling at

a very interesting job of all the jobs you could  have in this life i think being a grave digger

a policeman obviously if it's yes uh is there a  non-gender-specific name for someone who works  

in the police yes officer well what happens if  they're not an officer maybe they're all officers  

yes well an officer a police officer police  officer a police officer is just a police person  

but you don't say police person because that  sounds really weird police officer yes so you  

don't say policeman anymore you say police officer  but you can say policeman if it is a policeman  

if there is a man coming towards you who has a  giant helmet then he is a policeman but if you  

have a lady coming towards you with a flat cap  then she is a policewoman yes you can say i think  

you can still say policeman policewoman or police  officer police officer would cover all variations  

uh so yes and there are a lot of female police  officers in the uk yes there are uh a lot a  

lot loads in fact somebody at work so many their  daughter is a police officer and uh she loves the  

job and i think i think when it comes to policing  uh you know if everyone's having the same training  

then you know you wouldn't want to mess with  a female police officer because they can  

you know they've probably been trained in the  same way as a man would all skills involved in  

overcoming overpowering someone who's being too  physical towards them okay great i'm trying to  

i'm trying to think of sentences self  defence self self defence that's right  

so if they are arrested so be careful next  time you're walking down the road and you're  

doing something wrong you might end up being  grabbed by the fuzz i always it's very painful

it's not necessarily gender specific but it  is showing the female form and male form of  

that particular word so in grammar quite often  this happens this happens in grammar i believe  

the same thing happens i think in turkish as  well i think there are male in female forms  

and french french is very well known for  having male and female forms of their language  

within their language uh formula one racing  drivers there are female formula one racing trunks  

f1 pardon oh f1 i thought  he said something else um

so that's good yes exactly so anyone can do any  profession because we're all human we've all  

got the same basic skills yes it's just i think  naturally some professions particularly the more  

physical ones even though i know women can do lots  of physical work but i think naturally that more  

physical jobs would probably be taken up a higher  proportion would be have men in them yeah wouldn't  

they men well they'd be done by men yes yes okay  here's another honesty before we go we are going  

to be skipping out of the room in a moment like  a couple of ballet dancers minutes ago jesus

like a couple of ballet dancers steve belly dancer  valley dancing yes yes okay well of course i think  

that i i would probably estimate that there are  an equal number of male and female belly dancers  

um because you have to have uh male and females  don't you to because a lot of the routines  

uh you have to have a man dancing with a woman  not necessarily i know not necessarily but quite  

often sleeping beauty is often performed with  a woman playing the part of prince charming  

probably because they can't get a man to do the  wrong yes well isn't that the opposite of what  

you just said i know but i'm just saying you  do see lots of bally dances you see ballerina  

would be the would would refer to a female belly  dancer okay and then you would say bally dancer  

for a male okay so how would how would you  know that the ballet dancer was a woman then  

a man if you're saying ballet dancer so i think a  ballet dancer can be anyone it can be yeah it can  

be a ballerina yes is specifically a female  that's it valley dance yes that's where the  

term prima donna comes from i believe yes the  lead the lead ballet dancer is the prima donna  

very nice but when i when i was a little child  and my next-door neighbour their their son  

was a ballet dancer and i always thought it  was quite strange to be a ballet dancer right

i thought i thought you were about to finish  no that that's definitely not a sentence that's  

ended that's a continuation of a sentence taking  place i always thought it was strange but then  

later on in life he he actually changed his job  or his his want in life his what he wanted to see  

where are you going with this i'm turning  into you i'm starting to turn into mr steve  

i'm sure whatever steve has so he wanted to be  a ballet dancer but then he changed his mind  

and decided to become what a builder yeah  well i think he did i think he went into  

some profession that was completely the  opposite here's you see there is a lot of

he got married and had kids so so what  do you what what's wrong why wouldn't he  

let me just carry on but you would often  assume that if a man is a parry dancer  

yes that he might not be heterosexual he  would yes that's the perception yes i think  

actually when it comes to ballet dancing it's  quite off well quite often isn't the case but  

you see here's a story you can see but there is a  stigma isn't that associated with or an assumption  

that if a man is doing bally or a boy is doing  bally he must be gay that is what everyone  

most people would assume and that certainly  was the case when i grew up because my sister  

when you were a belly dancer no i didn't i didn't  my sister used to have a ballet dancing lessons  

okay right okay but because my father was  always late home from work i had to go to  

with my mother my mother took my sister for belly  dancing lessons every week most weeks but i had  

to go along with my mother because there was  no one to look after me at home and of course  

all my school friends used to see me going into  this place that everyone knew was where you went  

for your belly lessons uh and assumed that i was  having badly lessons and i used to get called  

all sorts of names at school all the way through  because of that i mean they were obviously right  

but for the wrong reasons i never did do bally  wish i had because it's actually incredibly  

you've got to be incredibly strong and muscular  to do that job rudolph nuriev oh he was attractive  

russian famous russian ballet dancer rudolph yeah  yes anybody from russia watching today well he  

turned didn't he he turned what when he turned  he he he left his native homeland oh right yes  

defected defected defected yes he did  we saw that i saw a program about that  

but uh he was married so you know Baryshnikov  another famous ballet dancer male but loved  

his women so so yes sometimes i think it is it  is easy to to misrepresent i think that's a very  

i think the i think you would find i don't know  if it's right but it's probably not let's not go  

down that road there's no evidence i doubt it's  right otherwise if you're thinking it's steve

air quality you would think would be i mean it's  probably not as bad as some of that beijing but  

uh or mumbai which i'm sure has got very bad air  pollution but i think our air pollution i'd like  

to monitor it i'd like to get an air pollution  monitor and shame the local residents steve can  

i just point out that yes we burn logs we we also  have a lump i know but we do it responsibly with  

only properly very dry logs because what if a log  burner is but anyway let's go into that all right  

wow that was that was that was so boring they  shouldn't smoke once they once they're lit and  

they're burnt correctly you shouldn't see smoke  after it's first lit it should be just virtually  

smokeless okay steve again right again  you know if anyone's watching me here yeah  

the clue is in the word boring well  i'm going back to bulbs mr duncan  

secretary do you think women make these bulbs i  think they do in factories all around the world i  

think predominantly women are making those bulbs i  would say well if you go to certain countries like  

china you might find that there are  many women working in factories but  

it doesn't necessarily mean that's all it that's  the only place where it happens because here when  

we used to have a very thriving textile industry  most of the people were women working in the  

the the mills and all of the place where where  the cotton was spun yes so so quite often that  

would be also a place where that was dominated  by females and in during the second world war  

most of the men were out fighting uh women were  working in the factories building the tanks  

and the aircraft there was a huge number of  women that kept everything going during the  

war years so it just shows that you know women  can do these ma that would have been a very  

manual difficult job to do yes but i think it's  not that people certain genders can or can cannot  

do certain jobs it's just there are preference  people just probably don't want to do it no  

women probably don't want to work on you know  a car factory making cars or building tanks  

but during the war but but they can because  it's been shown that that has happened in the  

past well it's also the fact that there wasn't  very little choice it was either get the women  

to build the missiles and the tanks or or we would  all be you know doing the uh heil you know what  

somebody said that shirin said there  was smoke behind us there was it was  

blowing by really yes really that's it you  see what i mean that someone's lit there  

someone's lit there there there was wonderful it  was just just as you were talking about really yes  

it took you all so you never even noticed that  that while you were talking about log burners  

there was actually smoke billowing behind us well  i wasn't looking at myself no on the screen when  

i was looking at the camera that much that much  there we go exactly so there's my case in point  

everyone's lighting their log burners they're  burning wood that's too damp or wood that they've  

picked up from somewhere and polluting the air  with foul stinking smoke maybe they're burning  

their furniture well that's the problem they don't  burn what they're supposed to burn they just get  

get old bits of wood from out the garden  somewhere or they found in the woods  

okay steve this this just sounds like you moaning  now security job uh bar ram a security job yes  

security guard security guard quite often we  will associate that particular job with men  

yes i don't think i've ever seen a female security  guard i don't know so that's another one we need  

more female security guards please can we  have more i want i want to see some equality  

in that profession about other professions  we've spoken a lot about professions where  

men are dominating that profession for  whatever reason or what about professions  

where there's a lot of women we've spoken  about nursing teachings teachers what else

can we think of any others well in sales there's  a lot of female sales people because in the job  

i'm in and for many years now there are far more  female sales people than there are male which i  

think's it didn't used to be i mean 30 years ago  it was the other way around but now it's swapped  

i don't know why that is what are you looking  at mr duncan no i'm not looking at anything  

don't worry about me i'm just operating  the equipment giovanni wants to know  

uh how much does the fire would cost you see  people are interested in firewood yes uh they'll  

be they'll be burning us tonight so the problem is  now there's a new law coming in you can only buy  

what's called kiln dried logs so they're i've  got they're dry they're very dry they're below  

20 moisture absolutely level to be specific and  they're quite expensive so um 300 logs big logs  

would cost you about 100 pounds 140 pounds  of course if you have trees in your garden  

you can just chop those down and it costs you  nothing yes but of course it wouldn't be at the  

correct moisture level and would create uh lots of  particulate matter yes which is bad for your lungs  

okay um whatever right so yes they're not cheap  it's much cheaper to run your central heating  

system yes in gas or oil than it is to burn logs  but mr mr spencer but mr steve does love his lock  

burner so you're complaining about other people's  log burners but you you burn wood and some of it  

does go into the atmosphere it's not just because  you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there but  

because yes but if you if they're burnt correctly  then you don't get so much pollution from it

says sir please can you help me how how would you  like me to help you well if you need immediate to  

help with say you're in a danger we can't help  you yes but uh is it to do with english yes  

are you hanging paris perilously at the edge of  a cliff in which case that it's not just we can't  

we can't do much but uh if it's to do with health  specifically with english we can help you yeah so

people were people were complaining though  that the loud bangs were disturbing them  

you mean they're they're specifically their their  animals their pets yes well they it happens every

on sunday we we often have something very light  something that's not too heavy a very light meal
