hi everybody this is mr. Duncan how are you today are you ok I hope so

are you happy I hope so Here I am on my summer holiday taking in

the sights and sounds of Turkey in today's lesson we will take a look at

words and sentences connected with and relating to going on holidays welcome to Turkey

turkey is a country that covers a large area of land known as the Anatolian

Peninsula it sits precariously on the Europe Asia

border and not too far away from the Middle East which frequently causes

confusion over where the country actually is the place I'm staying at is

on a small island of the southwest coast called Chevalier

ancient history records Constantinople is the center of the Roman Empire and of

course Turkey is the birthplace of the Ottoman Empire

whose formation occurred towards the end of the 13th century and continued to be

there right up until the early 1900s

the recent history of Turkey has been a traumatic one where the military coup

the division of land between Greece and Civil War creating many problems

especially during the 1970s and early 1980s

tragedy hit this nation in 1999 when a tremendous earthquake struck with

devastating consequences

they say that to truly get away from it all you must first place yourself is far

away from all the familiar features of your everyday life you should endeavor

to escape the day-in day-out routine and shake off the shackles of the rat-race

existence taking the holiday gives your mind a chance to ease its daily burden

and your body a well-deserved opportunity to fully relax itself oh yes

we all need a holiday a break a getaway a vacation a change of scenery we all

need to get away from it all from time to time

yeah well I didn't realize it could get so hot here in Turkey it must be at

least 39 degrees at the moment

in English the place you travel to is your destination you set up from your

home and travel to another place you make a journey you go on a trip you take

a vacation you go on holiday the average holiday lasts for about two

weeks this is more common if the journey taken to get there is a long one the

slowest form of long-distance travel is by sea

the fastest form of transport is of course the aeroplane these days it is

common for those going on holiday to fly even if they are traveling within their

own country city hopping by plane is normal across both Europe and the United

States a short flight is referred to as short fall while a long flight is often

referred to as long-haul

a plane trip can take anything from a couple of hours with no stops to a

couple of days with many stops some people find flying less enjoyable

these days the long delays at airports and the many security checks that

passengers now face have combined to make travelling by plane much less of an

adventure than it used to be

for most people summer is the time for taking a holiday some will stay in their

own country and take a domestic holiday while others will take a long trip to

another country they will go abroad they will travel overseas a person may travel

just a few miles to a nearby country or they might decide to travel to a

completely different part of the world thousands of miles away

there are many different types of holiday which can be taken the choice is

yours from relaxing get away from it all Beach holidays where you simply spend

the time doing as little as possible right up to the wild adventure holidays

where you spend most of the time exploring the sites and taking in the

sounds the adventures can be on land or water high up in the air or even deep

down at the bottom of the sea after spending so much time on the small

island I have decided to take a boat trip across the bay to the nearest port

on the Turkish mainland called Fethiye

there is nothing like the feeling of being on a boat especially one so small

you certainly feel the force of each wave as one by one a lash up against the

whole

I'm not a big fan of being on water however for some reason today I do not

seem too worried

Vitya is a small bustling market town it serves as the main commercial centre for

this particular region on the southeast corner of the Gulf from here you can

take a sightseeing boat trip or go on a deep-sea diving adventure the town

attracts hundreds of tourists a week to its small shops and gifts stalls

despite the mass attraction fethiye does not feel like a tourist trap the

laid-back feel of the town gives you a real sense of the nature of the Turkish

people

there are plenty of places to eat with cafes and restaurants serving all types

of food including a full English breakfast mmm talking of food surely one

of the best parts of taking a foreign holiday must be sampling the local

cuisine tasting the local food each country tends to have its own speciality

dishes some countries have become connected to certain types of food and

drink for example Italy is known for its pasta dishes France is known for its

fine wines and high-class restaurants turkey is well known for its meat dishes

such as kebabs when people talk about English food they often mention fish and

chips what type of food is your country famous for

it is worth noting that there is a very large population of British people

living here in the southwest of Turkey

so now it is time to take the short trip back to my little island for a

well-deserved rest

it would be unfair to talk about travel without mentioning its impact on the

environment Turkey is a relative newcomer to the mass tourist industry

and because of this it has not yet been spoiled by the development connected

with this particular market

there are still many part of this country which have managed to remain

relatively untouched by progress

however the small island I'm staying on is now beginning to show signs of the

demand for places to stay new developments are starting to spring up

in and around this area

fortunately it is still being kept under tight control so for the time being many

parts of southern turkey remain relatively unspoiled

the island I'm staying on Chevallier is steeped in history the ruins of Roman

settlements are scattered along the coast of the island with some now hidden

beneath the water

here we see an excavation site archeologists are in the process of

uncovering the remains of just such a Roman dwelling

some ruins from not so long ago now a disused restaurant now sits derelict it

would seem that this small island could not sustain such a business although

that could all change in the future as more people come here

there is one thing you cannot do much about on holiday and that is the weather

fortunately storms like this one are not common during the summer in Turkey the

tourist season here tends to be between April and October with June to August

being the hottest time when the temperature can reach 40 degrees

one of the most well known superstitions in Turkey is the all-seeing benevolent

eye which is said to ward off the evil intentions and negative thoughts of the

so-called evil eye the benevolent I can be seen everywhere around Turkey a

person may wear one is a pendant or put it above the doorway of a room or have

one displayed at the front of their home the benevolent eyes believed to ward off

all evil intentions

one of the most enjoyable parts of traveling to any place is of course

taking in the sights and enjoying the scenery the small island I'm staying on

gives you just such a chance first of all there are no roads here so all

traveling on the island must be done on foot a slow walk from one end of the

island to the other takes around 40 minutes and the more adventurous can

swim right around the island in just under an hour

from here you can see some of the small villas which have been built the first

modern buildings on the island were constructed here around the mid-1990s

from here we can see the Turkish mainland and the town we visited earlier

Fethiye

one of the best parts of staying on an island of this size must be the feeling

of seclusion it gives you sometimes it is good to be isolated from others for a

while it gives you time to reflect on things you would otherwise not have the

chance to consider

you of course living in isolation does have

its downside there are no shops on the island and all supplies must be brought

over by boat

surely the most important part of any holiday must be the accommodation you

can stay in a hotel and have all your meals included in the price this is

called full board you may only want a breakfast

included in a deal this is known as bed and breakfast you may decide to rent

accommodation such as a small villa and make your own meals this is called a

self catering holiday the hotel I'm staying at has a nice pool to relax by

for the more adventurous there is a jetty for those who want to be nearer to

the sea from this point you can enjoy all of the maritime sights the word

maritime refers to anything sea related or an activity done on the sea marine is

also a word relating to the sea we often describe all things living in the sea as

marine life
