Live on my birthday - 1,300 feet in the air.

hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how  are you today are you okay i hope so here we are  

on a very special day because it's my birthday  and we've come out because the weather is so  

nice today we couldn't resist coming outside  and enjoying a little bit of this summer weather  

so it is my birthday and i thought why not come  outside and do a live stream and we've decided  

to go for a lovely walk in fact i have to be  honest with you this is the most exercise that  

i've had in a very long time i can't remember the  last time i had so much exercise as this so where  

are we i suppose the question is where are we can  i first of all check that you can hear me if you  

can hear me please say mr duncan we can hear you  even though it's very windy so if you can hear me  

please tell me mr duncan we can  hear you and then i will continue

and don't forget also i'm not on my own i am  with someone else as well i've just realized  

on this video the uh the location is  actually on the video can you believe it so  

i think actually you might know where i am so i  will tell you where i am i'm actually at the top  

of one of the most famous landmarks oh  there i am one of the most famous landmarks  

in shropshire and there is mr steve as well hello  mr steve hello hello everyone hello mr duncan  

and may i add my special birthday  congratulations to you as well  

thank you very much yes it is my  birthday today and happy birthday to me  

so we've decided to come to one of the most famous  landmarks in this area and this is the reeking  

the highest point in this area where i live  and i thought today we would go for a walk  

mr steve is here as well it's very windy it's very  windy we are what you would call um wind swept yes

which presumably you can hear but  hopefully it is audible our voices are all  

what we think that's right because we  are using professional equipment you  

see so it's windy up here at the moment we  are how high are we we are now 1 300 feet  

above well above everywhere to be honest and  if you look behind me you can see the toposcope  

so that little thing behind me that thing  that looks like a a white piece of stone  

that is actually a toposcope and that is the  highest point on the recon so this is the place  

that we can normally see  from the house isn't it steve  

it is by the way if you're wondering what the  spelling is of wrekin w r uh is it e k i n  

yes w r e k i m wrekin yes this is the rican  hill you can look it up lots of people watching  

as mr duncan it's very exciting it's uh yes  it's windy it's actually starting to get cold  

because are we about thirteen hundred did you  say i just said one thousand three hundred feet

down below but it's very exciting interesting walk  up it took us about how long about an hour to walk  

up it took us one hour roughly we stopped as well  for a drink and oh apparently i can't hear you  

says sorry can't you hear us can you hear us  hello someone's just said we can't hear unstable  

audio well i would imagine that is because  of the fact that we are at the top of a hill  

that might be the reason why because we are at the  top of a hill very high up it is very high up here  

what's your signal like i said it's perfect one of  the other things about coming up here is you get  

a very good mobile phone signal so i am talking  to you at the moment on my phone and we are at the  

peak the very top of the wrekin so this is the  place that you can normally see from my studio  

window in the distance and now we are doing the  opposite we are now looking the other way in fact

would you like to see the view would you like  to see the view out in in front of us this is  

not easy by the way so there it is there is the  view and somewhere over there is where we live  

i think we are we are around about  let me see we are around somewhere  

somewhere near there so there around there  somewhere is where we are somewhere around there  

it's hidden by the trees isn't it mr duncan  it's hidden slightly by the trees you are right  

so mr steve and myself are celebrating  my birthday steve bought me some lovely  

gifts which i will show you on sunday when  we are back with you live as we are now the  

only difference is on sunday we will be in the  studio we won't be sitting on top of the rican  

but it's lovely it's quite nice i'm amazed  how nice the weather is because recently  

the weather has been a little changeable  here in the uk but today it's rather nice

so what are we doing later mr duncan uh you  know it's your birthday i think i think you've  

already decided what you want to do later well  of course you can guarantee that it will involve  

food whatever we are doing later it will involve  eating food i think so i think it is safe to  

say that food will be eaten later on so so this  morning we had we had a lovely cup of tea in the  

morning and then mr steve gave me some presents  i normally have to hunt for them around the house  

so what steve normally does is he he hides  the presents and then i have to hunt for them  

it took you a long time today mr duncan because  i had wrapped a lot of presents for you but uh  

you know it was your birthday and i thought it's  mr duncan's birthday it only comes once a year  

let's treat mr duncan that's it so there you go  yes yes yes indeed of course this this is not  

a very flattering angle by the way this is not  the best angle to be standing or sitting at and  

there are quite a few people up here but it is not  very busy to be honest it isn't very busy up here  

so there are one or two people but not many yes  we we probably walked for half an hour and then  

we there was a cafe halfway up a cafe so we i had  a cup of tea and a flapjack which is oats butter  

and sugar and a little cake and uh mr duncan  had an ice cream because it was his birthday  

and uh you've also got a kit kitkat yes  a chocolate bar to eat on the way down  

we literally had only walked because mr duncan's  legs were turning to jelly yes i don't know what  

it is i think maybe i think it would be fair  to say that i am a little unfit slightly unfit  

so maybe maybe i am a little bit unfit put it  this way we were being overtaken by uh grannies

overtaken by people who must have been twice mr  duncan's age i can see the transmitter there it  

is so just between us now can you see there  is the the rikin transmitter so that is where  

we get our television pictures from and the  signal that is no doubt uh transmitting this  

broadcast to you well it i don't think it  actually is oh right okay no i don't think i  

don't think he just said yes it would have looked  quite impressive mr duncan but it would be a lie  

a lie a horrible stinky lie i look awful today  i've just realized i do not well viewers mr duncan  

has made no effort uh in his appearance today  i on the other hand have shaved and of course  

i'm looking as beautiful as i ever do look it's  my birthday if i want to look scruffy if i want  

my birthday i think i am very much entitled  to do that i think i have everything mr duncan  

looks like uh in between live streams so on a  sunday he looks presentable but this is what he  

lets himself go during the week well i'm not  wearing a suited tie no one comes up here  

dressed smartly why would you why would  you oh look at mr steve's new boots  

there there those are mr steve's new boots very  nice it's very rocky and stoney so you need tough  

boots to get up to the top of this hill and  these feel like they could go up everest in  

fact they're very heavy um they feel like i've  got two lead weights around my around my ankles  

but i'm hoping that they will last for many many  years maybe they will last longer than we do why  

don't you look at mr duncan's boots and my boots  are lovely there's nothing wrong with my boots

okay so there is a comparison these are my boots  and those are mr steve's boots as you can see i  

think it's safe to say mr steve's boots are nicer  but they're very new but my boots are around seven  

years old that's the reason why and as you can  see mr duncan has probably never treated them  

with all the various waxes that you're supposed  to treat walking boots with mind you as you say  

maybe i will buy you a new pair for christmas  yeah okay then can i have something else  

i don't really want a pair of boots  for christmas that just seems you know

while moving their boots at the same time this  is very interesting i know one thing it's bloody  

windy a bit windy and because we were sweating  on the way up we're now cooling down rapidly  

due to the uh effect of evaporation so let's let's  talk about the view okay so here is the view this  

is looking out over shropshire if you look in the  distance you can see what is left of the power  

station so there is a power station or there was  the chimneys have now gone they were demolished  

at the beginning of 2020 i want to say is it  really a year over a year since the chimneys  

were demolished i can't believe it and that power  station of course is in a town that you've uh  

shot videos at yes i made a lesson i made a  lesson right there in ironbridge ironbridge  

that's it there used to be two gigantic cooling  towers four four uh but they were demolished  

last was it last year the year before i just  literally said did you i'm not listening to a  

word mr duncan is saying obviously as usual mr  steve is not listening to anything i'm saying  

uh yes we've got some interesting plants  here as well uh uh with uh purple flowers  

um if mr duncan would like to  scan right okay maybe just show  

our viewers this is what you get on top  of a mountain top in in the uk heathers

h-e-a-t-h-e-r-s heathers which are uh they're  plants that always flower at this time of  

the year they're very hardy and they can  withstand freezing cold high temperatures  

lack of water but they have these lovely purple  flowers which always come out around august good  

that's very uh oh and look there's a  there's a there's a there's a bird there  

a bird of prey hovering in the distance  looking for a mouse or something to eat  

i have a feeling that might not appear very well  i've been hovering there for ages searching for uh  

oh there is there is actually a bird of prey yes  yes hovering i wonder if the viewers can see that  

bro no no i don't i don't think so no it's it's  just a very tiny dot on the screen unfortunately  

we're virtually virtually alone here  i feel very vulnerable mr duncan well

well vulnerability is not going to get less  oh suddenly gone cold viewers will have to  

warn us if there are people coming from behind  us who look like they might want to attack us  

yes and you'll have to shout  out to us and say look out

gentlemen

in a world of threat threat terror impending  doom and danger is always just over the horizon  

it's very hard for my world it's very hard  for mr steve to do anything without without  

there being some element of danger yes just  around the corner i imagine constant danger  

everywhere so if you just joined us we  are now at the top of the rican hill  

and there you can see the the famous transmitter  behind us probably zapping our bodies  

with thousands and thousands  of watts of electromagnetic

energy although to be honest i could do with some  

i could do with some energy there's  someone on a bike oh that's exciting

i think we could wondered are we able to are we  mobile or is it difficult to want to move around  

well all this equipment you happen to do that's  not the problem the problem again is the signal  

the old signal it takes a while to get the signal  you see we are in a strange location we are high  

up high up i think this is the well in fact  i know this is the first time that we've ever  

done a live stream on the recon we've never done  it before so this is actually the first time that  

we've done a live stream from the top of the  rican the first time ever never done it before  

see this don't go on we might  never do it again what's that steve

my famous added ass bag yeah this  is i had this this must be 30 years  

more than that probably i don't know

it's a very and it's kept me going for years  i wonder if people are interested to see what  

i carry in my rucksack no i don't think anyone  is interested i brought some painkillers some  

very strong painkillers yes well mr steve is  still having difficulty with his shoulders

that's right and and uh and i thought i'll bring  some painkillers always thinking of what the worst

if one gets injured while we're waiting for rescue  we've got incredibly strong painkillers because

so that's how my mind works steve is looking  on the bright side of things the only the only  

problem today is i don't have a tripod if i  had my tripod this would be all much easier  

to do but unfortunately we don't have a tripod i  don't think you could have climbed up here with  

your tripod today mr duncan it would have been  just too much for your body to take i just can't  

believe how awful i look i mean this hat looks  terrible i'm wearing i'm wearing an old vest  

look at this old fist oh i don't  think you should show your viewers  

but look at the sky today we have some beautiful  blue sky it's looking rather nice today everything  

is very lovely we do have a lot of we do have a  lot of messages coming through but the problem  

is i can't read we can't read them because uh the  writing is very small on mr duncan's phone that  

he's filming from and the light is very bright and  reflecting on the screen so unfortunately we can't  

read your messages we will read  them later though i probably can

i don't need glasses even though i am of a  certain age i still don't need glasses okay  

uh how do we get to the messages well i can't  you see this tell me where to tap mr duncan just  

just tap on the screen anywhere

oh yes happy birthday nice surprise i've  arrived home says beatrice hello beatrice  

hat crooked oh what have i done you you just  press cancel yes there we go that's what happens  

when i get new technology yes probably best to  keep your big fingers away from it what tell me  

where definitely not to to well the problem  is you're pressing you're just swiping now

we now have the view look at that isn't that  lovely look at that i can't believe how nice  

the weather is today and we are enjoying my  birthday tonight we are going out for a meal  

i'm not sure what what type of meal it will be i  think we know but we're hoping it will be curry  

although it might also be a chinese but it  also might be a mcdonald's it just depends  

if we can find a place that's open because  there are still lots of places that are closed  

because of coronavirus and  the lock down unfortunately

oh there's a message thank you for your  messages unfortunately we can't read them  

properly but that we can tell there are lots of  fair not farewell lots of congratulation messages  

don't come back to our boots again there we  go yes mr duncan it does look scruffy today  

he's not put on his best birthday uh  a tongue here attire yeah no one says

that's not clothing quite often clothing that is  suitable for a certain thing how would you event  

a t i a-t-i-r-e double t there we go  

not a tire but attire okay how many  how many more times are you gonna

that's how you teach english mr duncan is it  are you sure i don't think it is i fancy a snack

whenever i get to the top of the hill i fancy  eating something i've just realized i think we  

might be the only people on the recon now well  what's happened is of course that they've all  

run away because they've seen us yes they're  all too afraid they think they might appear  

on our live stream do you like the way i'm using  my leg as a windbreak to stop the wind from  

affecting the microphone so that's why i'm doing  that you see it's all very clever clever stuff

is it of course it is yes i think people  

uh i think we've come at the right  time mr duncan there's no one around

there aren't any animals i thought i  would see animals up here like rabbits  

because the grass here is very short so i think  rabbits come out at night and eat the grass  

because they're are rabbit droppings everywhere  

rabbit dropping i think i might be sitting in  some rabbit poop i wonder what the smell was

what are you showing now mr duncan just showing  the the toposcope so there is the toposcope  

and also the transmitter so we can't move so  we can't really show you because mr duncan's  

worried about the signal although  the uh the signal oh am i on camera  

how delightful just let  people see me in all my glory  

my lips have gone dry mr duncan because  of the wind mind you i have got factor 50  

factor 50 uh sun cream on to protect  skin prevent me looking older

asking how old i am they're all  saying mr duncan how old are you today

there he is oh that's the duncan oh i  just pulled my shoulder oh i'm in agony

i tried to be funny for the camera and i i  wrenched my shoulder oh i think i've just  

undone two weeks of physiotherapy steve has just  injured himself oh dear oh i'm i think i need  

those painkillers mr duncan yeah i think i might  have some as well i literally just raised my arm  

up quickly and something went in my shoulder oh mr  duncan i need a massage yes well don't look at me  

you are getting you are getting no massage from  me it serves me right for trying to be funny on  

camera yes were you filming all of that or  not well yes oh good good i i could hear  

the the moment your your shoulder snapped  oh oh miss duncan i think i i feel faint

oh

so that's good for just for the comedic moment for  a bit of comedy mr steve has damaged his shoulder  

once again as i say i've just undone two weeks  of intensive physiotherapy which involves lifting  

a tin of baked beans above your head yes never  mind uh is anyone feeling sorry for me no i want  

i want i want lots of sympathy trying to take all  of the attention away from me because today it's  

my birthday it's my birthday and we're sitting  on a very big hill in the middle of nowhere

yes i've got this down so that the hat doesn't  blow off yes don't mention the hat look at the sky  

behind me it's in this tilly hat it's a beautiful  uh beautiful day breezy but of course we are very  

high up and being so high up it is going to  be windy definitely we are going in a moment  

we will leave you in a moment what time is  it mr duncan oh yes because we've got to  

take we might say about half an hour 40 minutes  yes we've got to go back mr duncan's got to  

smarten himself up to clear all of those  little sweaty parts of my body after walking  

because we can't go into a posh restaurant with  mr duncan looking scruffy because they might throw  

us out we don't even know where we're going yet  because we might not be able to get in anywhere  

because many restaurants are still  closed because of covid you see

you both look very relaxed thank you very  much peters that's very kind of you all  

i'm all i was worried about i was worried  that you wouldn't be able to hear us but  

apparently people can hear us so that's good  fantastic fantastic uh we'll have one last look at  

the view okay so i will turn the camera around and  then we will have one last look at the view today

so there it is there is the view looking  across from the reeking and over there in  

that direction is where we live somewhere over  there is where we are because of course you can  

see this hill from our house so i suppose if  you had a pair of binoculars or some sort of  

camera that could zoom in i think we could  actually see our house from here but we can't  

because i'm using my mobile phone and anyway  we don't want people to know where we live  

mr steve always worries that one day a large van  will turn up with lots of people wanting to come  

and see me no it'll be me they'll be coming to  see mr duncan i don't think so it'll be me um

so that is one last view of the  surrounding hills the surroundings

in fact we are in shropshire in england and  there it is one last look before we say goodbye
