Many, many years ago, she died, but she had cancer

and somehow she was living with the cancer.

And they were so interested to find out how that was happening.

They kept some of her cells and she died.

I think it's about 40, maybe 50, maybe even 60 years ago.

I think it was a very long time ago.

But they kept her cells.

And can you believe it?

Her cells are still alive.

There is still a part of this lady

that are still alive in labs around the world.

They've used her cells, haven't they?

For something, some kind of treatment.

Research into cancer and treatment, I think. Yes.

So, yes, she has.

She's still alive.

Her cells are still alive 40 years later.

So she she simply she sadly has died

a long time ago, but her cells are still alive.

They're still living, which I always find quite, quite fascinating when you think about it.

So I could be the one I could be the answer

to all of the world's problems with disease.

I was talking to some because I went back to the choir last night

and the person there that gave it to me two weeks ago.

But anyway,

that apparently people think that I've had a lot of

people have had this this new strain called crack, and

it's called crack.

And who is coming up with these names?

It comes out of the ground and bites your legs off.

Well, that's the latest strain of COVID.

It's called Kraken. And

I was describing my symptoms

and apparently they fit in with what this this particular strain is.

So I've had the crack. And.

It's been a while since I've had a crack.

A whole wheat cracker, which is nothing to do with crack.

And but a cracker, obviously, is something that you eat with cheese,

a small little savoury, slightly salty biscuit.

Don't mix up crack. And with cracker.

Yes, there is a difference, but one is real and one is mythical.

One is mythical.

I will leave you to work out which is which.

So I could be, but I escaped the dreaded look.

Don't know how. Don't know how. Somehow.

So maybe my years in China are now paying off.

So maybe all of that hidden immunity that I have to.

To all of the horrible illnesses that I caught when I was in China.

Maybe.

Maybe that state, maybe my my immune system.

My immune system already has the antibodies.

Oh, yeah.

But it didn't protect you last year when you caught COVID then off me.

Yeah. Didn't protect you then. But anyway.

Well, maybe I'm immune to the crack.

And maybe you're immune to the cracking.

Yes. Who comes up with these stupid names?

I don't know, but it sounds nasty.

I don't know whether it is, but anyway, I think.

I've had a nice boost to my immune system, so without any serious consequences.

So hopefully for the next nine months or so, I can just sort of wander anywhere.

I can go into any public space, I can breathe in any bonds, found

sneezes and coughs, kiss anyone I like Mr.

Duncan.

Not that anyone, not that anyone wants to kiss you and thanks

and shall I shall remain COVID free because I've had a little

a boost to my immunity without having to have a vaccine.

So how about that? Yes.

So I feel quite you know, I feel strong now.

If I can just go anywhere with no fear whatsoever.

Get on a train, a bus, go to a concert.

I can't imagine.

I don't know why. Well, when I'm 65, I'll get my bus pass

and. And, of course, that's not very far away.

Every year that passes, Mr.

Steve gets a little bit older, and it is your birthday

in just a few days from now, on the 16th,

the 16th of February 16th.

And of course, two days before that, we have another important date.

Why don't we Valentine's I suppose it depends on what your situation

is, whether you actually have someone you are you are

wanting to fall in love with.

Still got a bit of a cough. Yes, we've noticed.

I've taken vitamins all my life.

I've said this before,

It doesn't matter.

I've tried everything when it comes to coughs and colds.

As we've said before, I'm very susceptible to these.

And I've often thought over many, many decades.

What is it?

Why do I keep getting colds? Mr.

Duncan never seems to get them.

I've taken vitamins, you know, exercise

all the herbal remedies, vitamin C, you name it.

I've taken them all. Echinacea.

Well, zinc, tablet. Okay. Don't.

Don't name everything.

Vitamin D, nothing works in preventing me from getting these colds.

Some people know what to do.

Yeah.

What it comes down to is what I always say.

Some people will get it and some people won't.

It's a bit like, I suppose I don't want to talk about this again, but it's a bit like cancer.

Some people are more susceptible because of their routines

or maybe one thing in their life that is different from somewhere else,

from someone else or even genetic.

So it's all it's all it's like it's like

spinning the wheel on a roulette table.

That's what I always say about health.

Sometimes a person can live an unhealthy life,

completely smoke and drink, and they

and they can live to a very old age. Yes.

And no one knows why.

And other people and other people who go running every day

and take lots of vitamins and exercise, they drop dead

when they're 28 and no one knows why.

So there is there is this this strange phenomenon in life

where you try to try to look after yourself,

but don't make it something that takes over your brain because then you will just go crazy.

And if you do live for a long time, you will just have a very long life

where you are constantly worried about everything around you.

Like me. Yes.

So, yes, you you can't you you've got to be sensible.

I mean, you know, my father.

Let's take my father as an example.

He would pretty much say he pretty much abused his body when he was alive.

And I think I think, you know, he smoked all his life.

He drank, you know, because he was a sailor, but he still lived to 80.

So, you know, that's not bad, is it?

He was being a sailor.

Got to do that.

Say this drink.

They've got a reputation for alcohol consumption.

High alcohol consumption. Yes.

That is very prejudiced. Well, I think it's true.

I don't think it's I think it's actually true when you're stuck at sea.

He was in the merchant navy.

So you're at sea for sort of weeks, months on end.

It was he was surrounded by seamen.

Yeah. Okay.

So what are you going to do? Yeah.

You're going to drink, aren't you, to while away the time.

And particularly if you're shipping lots of

lots of alcohol, which I think they often used to, but I don't know.

It was a different time then back in the sort of 5060s.

So. So sailors now what do they do now?

They just they just drink bottled water like me probably. Yes.

Yes, well, a lot of people do now suffer from anxiety.

I know I've been through a period where I used to have

terrible anxiety about things and sometimes for no reason,

I never found out why I had it, but it would come and go and sometimes I would fail.

Dreadful.

My heart would pound in my chest and I would feel as if as if I was going to die.

That's the feeling you have.

So I think a lot of people do suffer from this.

I do, especially in their life, if they've got problems

or maybe something bad is happening, a stressful situation.

So I think you can have it. And the lockdowns

for a lot of people

really brought anxiety on

and caused a lot of people to feel anxious for a long time.

And I don't I think a lot of people haven't fully recovered yet.

I think those harsh lockdowns that we had,

yes, mental health has suffered considerably.

So, yes, it's very common now, stress, anxiety

in a modern world,

social media, all sorts of different things influencing it.

I think social media is has anything to do with people being anxious that

that's just that's just what people do nowadays, isn't it?

But I think young people suffer more of anxiety due to that because they blame the Internet for everything.

Well, I think other people are actually drawing

attention to that as well, because young people are constantly being

assessed, aren't they, by their peers anyway, anyway.

But what do you know about young people?

Well, I don't I just what I've read, I can read Mr.

Doom can I can read the news, I can read articles, Got to talk to any young people, have to actually know.

There's no shame in actually admitting that you have it, because I think it is

something that everyone goes through, especially during certain situations.

and also in parts of Syria as well?

Terrible, absolutely awful scenes

coming from both Turkey and also Syria, especially northern Syria,

where all of the help and all of the aid

that is needed there cannot get through.

I hope you're okay.

There is a strange feeling, though, and I have to say it's it's on my mind at the moment.

Steve, there is a feeling that sometimes you see things happening

and the feeling that you have, well, you feel

you feel helpless to feel helpless.

So that's, that's that feeling that you have in life where something is happening in front of you

and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

It's very strange. It's a very strange feeling.

And it's it's very nice, isn't it, when you can sit in your nice,

comfortable house in front of your big TV and you're watching the news and all of this stuff

is going on in the world and it's terrible and people are dying,

they're injured, they're suffering, Whole families wiped out.

It is an awful, awful situation.

And I have to say, sometimes

the feeling of helplessness has to be the worst feeling of all.

It's you're in a situation where you could say anything.

You could even do anything to a degree, and it won't change that situation.

I suppose the last time we felt that was with your mother last year,

and also with my mother, who's in a situation right now where there is nothing you can do.

And I think helplessness has to be one of the one of the worst

feelings

where you see something happening and there is absolutely nothing

you can do about it, especially when it comes to nature.

Yes, volcanoes, earthquakes,

natural disasters, rain, heavy rain,

typhoons, tornado, Edo's.

So many countries in the world suffer from

a preponderance of these events.

I only see these bad weather events.

I almost feel guilty talking about it here because we're standing here

now on the Internet relatively comfortable and we're talking about it.

And it's a horrible feeling.

It's one sometimes that you can't actually you almost can't cope with it.

It's very, very strange feeling.

It really is.

But can I say can I say a big hello?

And that's all I can do for now, unfortunately.

And I hope that everything where you are is okay.

And if it isn't, I hope you're getting the help that you need.

And of course, Turkey is a very unique place because it sits on on

not just one, but several faults in the earth.

So the crust of the earth is divided up into sections and they're all pushing against each other.

And apparently it moves two centimetres every year

it shifts and the pressure slowly builds up.

And of course, as you know, if you press two things together, sometimes

those things will suddenly move or shift and that is why we have earthquakes. But

absolutely awful.

Sometimes Mother Nature

has the last word.

Nothing we can do, nothing we can do about nature.

We can't control it despite all our technology.

So, you know, I mean, the worse that we get in

the UK is really just, you know, temperatures

suddenly go into 40 degrees for for a few weeks or maybe a bit of snow, I think.

Oh, and here is wind. Yes.

But we never get anything really serious in the UK.

But we're very lucky from that point of view.

I mean, as soon as we we always talking about the weather,

but as soon as we get a bit of snow, you know, the whole country comes to a standstill.

Yes, we have a bit of hot weather for a week.

We do overreact. That's about it.

We do get earthquakes, but then nothing, nothing on that sort of scale.

Yes, well, we call them tremors.

So the earth moves a little bit sometimes,

but it's it just shakes the ground

very slightly and nothing like

the ones that have happened over in Turkey

and also across parts of Syria as well.

Well, you know what?

I know?

I know you're probably joking there, but you might have a point.

I think it is a thing that's become I think it's normal now

for people to come home from work and the first thing they do is open a bottle of wine.

Now, we're not going to talk about people in specific circumstances, but you know people, don't you?

Well, I'm not an I know people.

I mean, I agree this I saw a survey.

It's an interesting point that you made. I saw a survey.

It was done around the world about how what people perceive

what are the qualities they perceive in British people.

And the number one thing that came out was drink a lot.

So it was, you know, being polite and that sort of thing was there.

But the number one thing that people associate British people

around the world with is getting drunk.

And that, of course, a lot a lot of that has to do with the football crowds.

But, you know, it's a reputation that the British people

now have around the world, that they drink excessively.

So even in daily life, even in daily life, I think it's almost routine.

I think I think not from the point of going to the pub, but just being at home.

The first thing people do is open a bottle of wine and and we know people who sometimes

maybe during the week they will finish a whole bottle of wine.

And one night I've got a friend every night, drinks a whole bottle of wine or every other night.

I mean that's, you know, excessive really.

But people do.

Yeah.

You've got, you know, you've got your obvious drinkers,

the football crowd, the ones that get drunk and then cause

you get football hooliganism

and all that, which of course were well known throughout the world.

But then you have the secret drinkers, the middle class people who you go home and open

a bottle of wine at home and maybe have half of it every night and things like that.

Of course, the French drink, but they're what

the French are known for, being very moderate in their drinking.

So they will have one or two glasses and they won't get obviously drunk.

Whereas for British people we tend to go mad and have loads of it and get completely drunk.

It's just become a culture.

Yeah.

In, uh, in, in the UK, we're not part of that. So.

Well, well, this is what I was going to lead on to.

We don't really drink with.

I've never thought to myself, I must have alcohol.

I've never thought it as a child of course.

Well, when I say a child, it does feel as if it was my childhood.

But when I was in my teenage years, 18, 19, and even my early twenties, I would

of course go for a little bit to the pub because that's normal for teenagers.

And then you sort of grow out of it as I did.

So we didn't really drink alcohol at all.

But the other thing is the culture at work.

You see, I always found there's a culture in the UK of particularly if you go out with friends

or even in work when you go to a

maybe a work party or I used to go on sales conferences a lot.

There is this there is a lot of pressure in British culture to drink excessively.

And I mean, I battled with this for years.

Every time I went to a sales meeting, probably about four times a year and probably three or four

of the smaller regional meetings,

The expectation was when we'd done the work

in the evening, you would get drunk and it wasn't just one or two glasses,

it was the managers buying you drinks, trying to get you drunk.

And I used to battle against I used to throw the drinks away or.

Or hide them. Yes. Because I just didn't want

to feel awful the next day.

It's a type of it's a type of bonding

that, yes, it was There is a lot of pressure in the UK.

If you go out with groups of people or in the workplace to drink excessively and it's still then.

Well, I think it's starting to reduce now because I know in the company

I used to work for before, I've since found out now in all work meetings

they don't buy any alcohol and that's and the reason is it's, it's

corporate responsibility because if you get all your employees drunk

and then the next day they've got to drive back,

then they could be driving illegally on the road.

And I know people used to drive back in the UK,

they were still way over the limit the next day anyway.

But yeah, I'm just saying it is, it is.

There is pressure to drink in the UK when you go out

with friends or in company meetings.

Sadly, but then you go, Oh don't forget to give us a like by the way we can, we have a like

I know it sounds desperate and rather pathetic, but those lights really help.

They really do, because maybe, maybe someone at YouTube

will will see me and they will go, Oh, that Mr.

I have a feeling that's what's happening here is no doubt.

Take a few tanks back with him and he's in his aeroplane.

Maybe they're trying to smuggle.

Which I think he desperately needs at the moment.

Anyway, we shouldn't be joking about that because that's also another one of those serious things

going on in the world and once again, it's very easy to feel as if you want to do something.

You want to go there and maybe help,

but it's it's quite risky.

Quite, quite a few ex British soldiers

have have gone out there to to help in the conflict.

Quite a few of them have been killed.

Well, most of them, unfortunately, have actually died Just just a couple of weeks ago.

Two volunteers who went out there and they weren't fighting,

they were just going out there supplying aid

and helping communities out there.

And they were both shot heroes, really, these people going out, whether they're all heroes,

anybody battling to to stop somebody

invading that country is a hero.

Have you ever done that falling asleep in the afternoon, woken up and you're

all disorientated, You don't know where you are, you don't know what time it is, what day it is,

and then you suddenly realise you've got to be somewhere

in a very short time.

So it sort of makes you a bit

disorientated, a bit panicky, but yes,

It is a load of rubbish.

They understand British English.

Yes, it's it's one of these things that over the years has been created as a myth.

And the reason why I know that is because I can watch

television programmes from the United States and I can understand what they're saying.

And most of our programmes come from the United States.

Certainly most of the programmes we've watched, most of the comedy has to do

because it looks he's coming down with cable.

Okay, that can just draw attention to it.

so yeah, British people can understand.

American and American can understand British people.

They might be the I don't think there's

So it's all a question of accent.

So British English, American English is English.

There is only one.

And I know I say this a lot of times and people still don't listen to me.

I have to say it again and again.

But there are many variations with small differences like spelling.

And sometimes words mean different things, but no, it's not true.

It's just a question of that accent, isn't it?

It's English with an American accent in sentences, everything's exactly the same.

They find it very slight.

there's a lot of history

You know, people are still hate the English

because of what they what they did as people involves people.

And so we drove from the place where I was working to Beijing,

So imagine that 14, 15 hours in the back of a car with two people

Anyway, when we got to Beijing, I ditched them.

trendy dogs, dogs that people want to own.

But the only problem is they're not very friendly with children or small animals.

I often find that with with people that have unusual

dog breeds, like

very large dogs or something of a very unusual breed,

they're actually trying to get attention for themselves, I think.

So to take it for a walk and other people to stop and say, What's that?

And then they get into this conversation and then that, you know, it's helping them.

So, yeah.

Anyway, criticise dog owners, but we are definitely not getting one

because they are thousands of pounds.

And the other thing is dog theft is, is

if something is rife

it means it's our EFA, it means a lot of it occurs.

So dog theft in the UK is, is, is obviously

popular isn't the right word, but it's rife

because there are lots of these breeds of dogs,

pedigree breeds of dogs like this one here

that costs a lot of money.

I think the average pedigree dog now is something like £1,000.

So if you can steal somebody's dog, you can sell it and make money and it's quieter.

So that particular dog is actually thousands of pounds because they're very rare.

And also they take a lot of looking after, as you can probably imagine, that huge.

By the way, if they get up on their back legs, they are actually probably as high as I am.

So they're they're massive dogs.

They're not small dogs. They're huge.

But I suppose some people

to have something that they can show off with to their friends

or maybe even show off on the Internet, as has they are doing today.

And of course, YouTube is full of clickbait.

It's everywhere.

I don't do it myself.

You may have noticed over the years, but many people do who are who are now successful

and they put things they have thumbnails and titles that are very misleading.

So you click on the video and then maybe you see an advert

and then afterwards you realise that it's not quite the video that you thought.

So that's how some people get millions and millions of views

on their videos by, by tricking you into clicking on the video.

And that's what clickbait is.

Maybe you should, maybe you should produce a lesson. Mr.

Duncan And it says Do not click here if you want to learn English,

that word.

And then people, lots of people would click on it to see what it was that you were going to teach them.

No, I think there you see, they wouldn't click on it.

Obviously, that carries all sorts of implications with the law.

But it might be simple things like you, you didn't make somebody

a cup of tea or or you did something at work.

You you, you forgot to do something at work

or maybe you were going to do a presentation and you didn't really prepare.

So you you confess that you didn't really put much research into, into what you did.

It could be something quite simple.

Quite often lies.

Lies?

Yes. Listen, I yes, you lie about some of it.

So maybe you arrive late to work and you say to your boss, Oh, sorry.

The the train broke down, but really,

you were cuddling it with your wife in bed and you didn't want to leave her,

so you missed the first train and then the second one you caught that one.

But because of that, you were late for work. And then you lie about it.

But later in the day, you feel a bit.

You feel a bit guilty because you might get found out.

Someone might discover what you've done, they might check the trains

and they might discover that there was no breakdown.

And so they will know that you were lying.

So you go to your boss and you say, Oh, sorry.

I feel I feel as if I'll have to confess this

because if I don't, you might find out.

So this morning I was just lying in bed.

I was late for work because I was lying in bed.

The train did not break down, so you confess and your boss might say, Well,

okay, I appreciate the fact that you've been honest.

I'm still going to sack you for lying to me.

But thank you for your honesty.

Yeah.

So you might you might tell somebody else.

You might tell a work colleague or a friend at work.

Yes. That.

Or they might realise that you didn't miss the train until you in fact would just.

You just got up late.

But yes, confessions can be.

They say a confession is good for the soul,

and Cristina has hinted at that in her comment.

There, that if you're the sort of person who feels guilty about something that you've done

which is bad or doesn't follow,

sort of you've upset somebody, maybe

then talking about it

releases that stress and frees your soul to be able to be calm.

And, you know, you can sleep at night.

You're not going to be worrying about something.

You know, maybe you did something in anger.

Maybe you deliberately scratched your neighbour's car.

Who annoyed you?

And you know, in a moment of anger,

you did something and nobody found out that you've done it.

Nobody knew that you'd done it at the time.

And then you later confess it because you feel guilty about it.

Here's another one.

Steve So to confess can also be described

as admitting you admit something.

So maybe feel as if you're under pressure

because people are

starting to work out that you have done something wrong.

So just to save time, you put your hands up

and you you admit you admit the thing that you've done.

You say it was me.

and let all your chickens out and allowed the fox to eat them all.

It was me, I confess.

I put my hands up and I say that.

So you confessed earlier.

Somebody asks, Were you growing a beard?

And you could have said, Oh, I didn't have time.

You could have just said that and sort of lied.

But in fact you confessed it was because you were lazy and you didn't want to do it.

Yes, that was pretty that was very honest of me.

but but yes, you can confess small things.

Big things.

It doesn't have to be anything serious. Yes.

And you can say it quite light-heartedly in a conversation, can't you?

People will often use that expression.

Or admit. Of course.

Yes. Or admit or yes, you can use those sort of as synonyms.

So this is a phrase that we often use.

We own up to something.

We own up.

We say normally

in in spoken way.

So you will speak your confession, you own up to it.

You are saying that you are responsible

for that thing you own up.

There's always that famous scene in Spartacus, isn't there?

And I think it's Kirk Douglas.

And he's Spartacus, of course. He's all naked.

Very, very oily.

I don't know why he's so oily, but he is.

I don't mind it, by the way, but.

And they're trying to find out who Spartacus is.

who's trying to be the rebellious slave.

He's the one that's that's trying to hold up a rebellion and start one and want to know who

Spartacus is.

And then Kirk Douglas stands up and says,

I am Spartacus, but then everyone else does.

It's a very famous scene, so everyone else then starts standing up.

I think Tony Curtis was one of them as well.

I think he was.

So they were trying to protect him there. Yes. Right.

So he he owned up, but then everyone else

also owned up and admitted it, even though they weren't.

Even though they were they weren't all Spartacus.

No, that was that was just that was just.

Yeah, that would be quite a coincidence.

Everyone, everyone there was called Spartacus.

But. Yeah, yeah. So own up.

You own up.

You might also I suppose he's another way of confessing.

You show guilt.

Now, this is something you might do without intending to do it.

So you confess to something, but you don't want to.

You do something that makes people suspicious

about you.

Yes, you, Bella says, can do you have to say own up to or can you just say own up?

You own up to something you always use the word to.

So you are using it as well.

It's almost an adverb, but you are owning up.

So you're saying that you are doing that thing so you own up

to stealing that ring,

you own up to speeding down that road, you own up

to all of the things that you've done wrong in your life.

So if you are saying that from your point of view, you used to, but if somebody else was trying

to get you to own up to something, they might say, Why don't you own up?

That's it. It was you that did it.

Yeah.

So in that case, if you're if you're saying that to somebody else, say you think somebody has stolen

your bike and you accuse them

and they and they say, no, it wasn't me,

you might just say, why don't you own up?

It was you.

Or you could say, Why don't you own up to it. Yes.

So yeah, you can.

It depends on the end of the sentence isn't it.

So to own up is to admit something,

to make a confession or you own up to something if it is the actual action

anyway, so as I admit

or I confess, I put a lot of garlic in the tomato sauce.

So don't worry about that.

I forgive you straightaway because I love it.

Here's another one.

You come clean,

you come clean, You say, I did it, I did it.

I confess I did that thing.

You come clean.

Maybe people already suspect that you've done something wrong.

So you have to. Admit it.

You have to confess. You come clean.

You decide to to ease your burden.

As you said earlier. Yes.

Come clean about something means to confess.

It means you talk about it.

And it's often a sense of relief that you feel after you've done it.

People often people usually confess because they they feel guilty.

And, you know, they want to they want to

get rid of that guilt.

And maybe for religious reasons.

Or maybe just to heal wounds in relationships.

You know, they confess to something that may be

I think also confessing is risky as well because you don't know how the other person

is going to react to the confession.

So I think depending on what it is

you are confessing to, if it's a very serious thing,

but if it's something that you you're not sure how the other person will react.

So it can be seen as a risky thing

to do, to confess to something or of course,

maybe something that is is dangerous

for the person who is confessing the thing they've done wrong.

They might get into very serious trouble

or lose their partner

if they admit to having an affair with someone else.

Yes, You might want to confess that

your partner might be suspicious

because you know your behaviour has changed and they might confront you with it.

And then you confess.

Because sometimes the evidence against

you might be too strong to deny it.

Yes, that is it. That is it.

The case against you is solid.

You cannot get out of it.

Sometimes being on a diet, it's almost like an admission of guilt in a raisin it.

Or you might oh, you might put on a lot of weight.

And so I confess, I've been I've been eating a lot of cakes recently, although I don't think

you'd need to confess that because they would be able

to see it with their big stomach.
