Apparently, he made a phone call to his company

and he said something to them that was not true.

He tried to play an April Fool's joke.

Of course, the thing to remember is you cannot make an April Fool's

joke after midday.

So as soon as 12:00 lunchtime

arrives, you are not able to play a joke or a trick.

The joke then will be on you

for not remembering that important role.

So here we have.

Oh, my goodness.

It feels very strange, first of all, to be with you

more than once during the week days.

Of course, I am normally with you at the weekend, but it's great to be here we have the sun out.

We have a little bit of wind,

but enough about my stomach.

And I suppose it's cold.

If I had to describe today's weather,

I would say it's freezing.

It's very cold outside.

I thought April is always a month with lots of things happening.

I always feel as if April is a busy month

when we are talking about nature, I suppose, and also events.

We have a special ceremony.

coming up during this month as well.

I do have some information to give you about

unfortunately I have other things to do.

why do we have April Fools Day?

And it just so happens that

I have a video lesson all about it,

all about why we have April Fools Day.

And guess what?

I'm going to show it to you right now.

Right now,

we all like to have a laugh once in a while.

I know I do.

However, some enjoy it more than others.

One of the ways of raising a tutor is to play a trick on someone

or to prank someone into believing something that is not true or real.

Fortunately, for those who enjoy playing the occasional prank or hoax on others,

there is a special day put aside for just such an event.

Of course, I'm talking about April Fools Day

April Fool's

Day occurs each year on the first day of April.

On this day, people will play tricks and pull pranks on each other for fun.

Most of the pranks are harmless and cause no real upset.

While some create anger, outrage, and even

masochistic area,

there have been some rather adventurous pranks

played on the general public over the years.

For example, in 1980, the BBC reported that

the four clock faces on the famous Big Bend clock tower would be replaced

by digital numeral readouts

Many people called in to complain before it was revealed

that the whole thing was a big hoax.

In 1978, a wealthy adventurer

returned from Antarctica to Australia, towing a large iceberg

with the intention of selling chunks of the ice to locals.

This turned out to be an elaborate hoax.

In 1998, the fast food chain

Burger King released an advertising campaign to promote a new product.

The left handed hamburger.

Amazingly, thousands of people fell for the prank by showing up at burger outlets

asking for one of the left handed meals.

In 1976, British astronomer

Patrick Moore announced on BBC radio that the planets Pluto

and Jupiter would align in such a way that here on Earth

people would experience a change in the Earth's

gravitational pull whilst jumping up and down.

Amazingly, the BBC received calls from listeners

purporting to have floated around the room

in 1962.

Swedish television viewers were told that if they stretched a pair of ladies tights

over their TV screens, the black and white picture would become colour.

Of course it was all a hoax.

TV viewers in Sweden had to wait another eight years before they could really see broadcasts in colour.

So what are the origins of April Fool's Day?

Well, it depends on who you ask.

There are many stories surrounding the reasons

why we play tricks on April 1st.

Ironically, most of the stories surrounding April Fool's Day

are made up

the first written reference of April Fool's Day

appears in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, published in 1392,

where a mix up with the wording of the dates refers to there

being 32 days in March.

Another origin, albeit an unlikely one, occurred in Friends

when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1564,

which meant that from there on the New Year would be celebrate

ated on January the first and not the end of March.

Those who continue to celebrate after the change on April

the first were labelled as fools.

Other theories are that the date refers to the Roman Festival of Hilaria

or a revolt against Christianity when an annual day of chaos took place

as a protest organised by the worshippers of demigods

In all honesty, it would be fair to say that there is no definitive reason

why April Fool's Day really exists.

April Fool's Day

is also known as All Fools Day in some places to many people.

The act of playing pranks and hoax and others for fun

seems childish and infantile.

However, this has not stopped people from falling each other

with their creative shenanigans.

Did you fall for it?

In this instance, to fall for something means that you were taken in

or fooled by the hoax or prank.

You were made to look stupid.

You were made a sucker of.

You were made to look a fool.

we also talk about all of the things down there

in your body.

Sometimes the rude parts,

sometimes the parts that produce

the poop and the pee.

We call it your plumbing.

Quite often used in British English.

So apparently Beatrice has two plumbers

breaking everything they are making of a lot of noise.

I would imagine it's been a long time since

I've had anyone here to do any work because of course,

we had lockdown for two years, so no one really is being here to do any work.

But I will say one thing.

It can be quite stressful when someone

is working in your house, maybe repairing something.

Maybe you are having some renovation often done

some work to improve your house,

and quite often it can be noisy.

I have heard some terrible stories from friends

who have gone away on the holiday for two weeks.

They've gone somewhere lovely and they've had a wonderful holiday.

And then they come back from their holiday and they find whilst they were gone,

the water pipes in their house had burst

and the water had flowed from the pipes

through the house, through all of the floors, and everything was wet.

And downstairs on the ground floor,

water everywhere.

This is a horror story.

I will be honest with you.

I think that might be the second worst thing to find

when you return back home from your holidays.

I think the worst thing

is finding your house burnt down

I've had many nightmares,

especially when I'm away on holiday,

that I will come home and find

that the house is burnt down.

So I think having a leak in your house,

a water leak with the water flooding through your house, that's pretty bad.

But I think that's number two because you can put that right.

However, if your house burns down

completely if it catches fire,

it's much harder to repair.

A lot harder.

Duncan, it was leaks.

I have leaks.

There is nothing worse than having a leak in your house.

In this particular case, it

can help the insurance of your flat.

I think

definitely

one of the worst things about having something go wrong with your house

is the insurance, because anything that goes wrong has to be put right.

So if you have some sort of problem in your house, maybe something needs repairing.

Maybe there is some damage to your house.

You have to put it right.

And as we all know,

if you have someone to repair

a part of your house, maybe a plumber or an electrician,

maybe a carpenter, or a builder,

it can be very expensive.

So most people these days do have insurance.

You must have insurance because if something goes wrong

with your house, something really serious.

It will be expensive to put it right.

It will.

in being foolish sometimes, as we cannot be always intended.

I have been fooled in the past.

When I was very young.

A radio station

that was broadcasting on something called Medium Wave.

Do you remember that? Who remembers Medium Wave?

Most people now have digital radios,

but many years ago, we had lots of different frequencies.

But listening to the radio there was medium wave,

which wasn't very good, especially at night, because you would get

a lot of atmospheric interfere ins and the signal would be awful.

But during the day, you could listen to medium wave.

The only problem was it was not in stereo.

It was in mono. So the sound would come out

equally from each speaker.

You couldn't have stereo on medium

wave because of the type of frequency that it was.

However, there was an April Fool's joke

by by a BBC radio station Radio One

that said on the morning of April, the first

a long time ago, they said that from a certain time

of that morning they were going to start

broadcasting in stereo

So I thought, Oh, this sounds great.

Not thinking that it was April 1st, so I actually thought

that I was listening to stereo radio

on medium way, which is actually impossible.

You can't do it.

You can only do it on FM So when when we have f m

then that's much better.

You can have stereo on there because the frequency is clearer, but not on medium wave.

And of course there is another

another type of frequency

called shortwave shortwave.

And that is a very unusual type of frequency

because the wave, despite its name, can go much further.

So if you broadcast on shortwave, you might find that people

in very distant places can hear your voice very unusual.

So that is going back to the days before the Internet.

Of course, we don't have to worry anymore

about shortwave or long wave.

That's another one by the way.

Medium wave.

No, but no one bothers any more.

You had to tune the radio you had to try to find

Maybe you have to go to court.

Maybe a person who has been accused

of committing a crime

Have you ever been accused of anything?

A crime?

Perhaps.

Maybe you were falsely accused

Maybe later you were exonerated. So.

So to exonerate, to remove or

absolve blame I like that word, by the way.

Absolve. That's a good one.

Exonerate derives from the Latin word for remove burden.

You are taking away the burden.

You are taking away the weight, the strain of something.

So to exonerate is to remove the burden.

That's where it came from originally.

Here's another word. Oh, I like this one.

Perturb.

Perturb as a verb

to make someone anxious or unsettled

And it comes from the Latin word for completely disturb.

So unsurprisingly,

the word perturb means to be anxious.

Something might cause you to feel anxious or unsettled.

Perturb.

One person might perturb another

Don't let my advice perturb you in any way.

so to be perturbed is is to be made anxious.

You feel worried, concerned, anxious.

Another good word vindicate a verb

to show or prove a person to be blameless.

So in this situation, you are carrying out an action.

For example, the solicitor was able

He was able to prove that that person is blameless.

They were not responsible so very similar to exonerate

vindicate comes from the Latin

for claimant avenger

For those who are fans of the comic books and your superheroes, you will know that

there is a use of the word avenger

to avenge, to retaliate,

to get your own back, to respond,

to put something right is to avenge.

Is a meeting that has been arranged normally between two people.

So two people will agree to meet at a certain time.

They will have a rendezvous.

So that's a French word.

If you have a silhouette, it means a shadow

or the outline of a person will think.

You can't see the detail, but you can just see the shadow of something,

the outline of a thing,
