My name is Duncan.

I'm talking to you live now from the birthplace of English, which is England.

Unfortunately, I am under the weather with my seasonal allergy.

And I thought today it would be interesting to come outside.

Now, as you know, many years ago,

I made the very strange decision

to move to the countryside.

And that's where I am right now.

The English countryside on the hottest day of the year.

At the moment it is around 29

I made the decision to come and live in the countryside.

Of course, there is one thing I forgot about, and that's the fact that I suffer from

hay fever

and now I'm living

in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by farmland.

My particular hay fever and I will explain what hay fever is in a moment.

For those who don't know,

my particular hay fever is grass pollen.

So when the grass starts to produce, it's pollen.

That is when my hay fever begins

and that is what is happening right now.

So I thought I would come outside on the hottest day of the year.

The pollen is in the air

and I have been suffering from hay fever.

So I'm not sure how long this will actually last for.

And I certainly don't know how long I will last for.

Maybe just for a few moments, we will see what happens.

But first, I must explain what hay fever is here

in England and across the UK

and in many parts of Europe

and in other parts of the world as well, where

certain plants or trees grow.

There are people who are sent ative

to certain types of pollen produced

by flowers, grass and trees.

And at this time, of year, normally normally at the start of June

and the end of July

is when most people see

the pollen at its highest point.

That's when the pollen is everywhere.

So at the moment, we are having

a very intense pollen season.

In fact, a lot of people are complaining.

They are saying that the pollen count

so they can measure the amount of pollen that is in the air.

The pollen count is as high as it's ever been.

I don't know why.

Maybe it's because we are having a lot of intense heat.

Perhaps. I don't know.

But a lot of people have been saying how much worse

their hay fever is this year.

So today we are having the hottest day of the year.

So far.

It might get hotter next month.

We don't know. We have no idea.

But for the time being, at the moment, we have to just wait

and see what happens next with

the weather.

Apparently tomorrow it's going to become very cool.

So today's heatwave is just for one day.

But apparently in southern Europe, a lot of people are suffering

and have been suffering for many days through intense heat.

Certain parts of Spain, Portugal,

they've had temperatures as high as 43,

43 degrees.

So what about hay fever?

What happens when you get hay fever?

How do you deal with it?

Well, first of all, you need plenty of these.

You need a lot of tissue paper, a lot of paper

or a handkerchief to wipe your nose

and wipe all the disgusting,

horrible mucus away from your face.

So these are always something that you have to have nearby

when you have hay fever.

So imagine hay fever as a type of cold,

maybe when you get a cold.

The symptoms of hay fever

and a cold or fever are very similar.

not cure, because there is no cure for hay fever.

One of the things that people who suffer from hay fever

complain about quite often is the fact that you can't

get rid of it.

It's very hard to get rid of it.

So to ease the symptoms, you can't cure hay fever.

Unfortunately not yet anyway.

Not yet.

There are many things you can take to,

as I said, and not cure your hay fever.

Because there is no cure, although I believe there is some new medicine

or there is a new vaccine that you can actually have

that is supposed to ease the symptoms of hay fever.

So we will take

a look at the things that are available now.

First of all, well, first of all, we have this you can put this up your nose.

It is a type of spray And what you do

is you spray this thing up your nose

and it is supposed to to ease all of the sensitivity

It does work, but only for a very short time.

So what I find is when I use this stuff,

it works for maybe an hour

or sometimes just a few minutes.

And then after that, I'm sneezing again.

So that is something that many people use.

It is something you spray up your nose and it is liquid.

It looks a little bit like water, but it has lots of other

things added as well.

Very common.

This on many different types of this particular

medicine is available

They call it a nasal spray nasal.

It's a great word.

The word nasal refers to anything connected with your nose.

Nasal spray.

Another thing a lot of people take

is a certain type of medicine called anti histamine.

And the antihistamine is something

that you can take.

The only problem is it can also make you sleepy, drowsy.

So one of the problems with this particular type of medicine,

this will will help your hay fever,

but it will also knock you out.

It will make you drowsy and sleepy

and you will suddenly have no energy whatsoever.

So these do work.

But again, the level of success varies.

Some people say that these work very well and some people say that they don't.

So there are many different types of this particular medicine, as you can see.

So there isn't just one.

There are many different types of this particular antihistamine,

and they all can contain very similar ingredients very similar things.

They contain very similar ingredients.

Oh, another thing you need on a hot day like this

is, of course, water.

And I have the biggest bottle of water that I could find to bring outside.

So I do have plenty of water.

I know that a lot of people worry

that I am punishing myself

but I'm doing my live streams, especially when I'm doing them for a long time.

But I have some water here as well to soothe

my throat Hmm.

And for those wondering, I haven't actually

taken any medicine today, so I haven't taken any

hay fever medicine

at all today.

But we have lots of cows at the back of the house.

I've read a lot of books in my time when I was at school,

One of my favourite lessons, one of my favourite classes

was English literature.

So our English teacher used to read stories to us.

Sometimes we would read a book together,

so we would sit in the classroom and we would all have a copy of a book

and then the teacher would read and we would follow and she read.

So it was a very good way of looking at

words, understanding the meaning of the words.

And also my English teacher had a very nice voice.

She she had a lovely English accent.

So I think I think maybe she was responsible for the way I speak.
