decided to put some large

illuminated posters around the city of Paris, including this one here.

It says Three Lions Roar.

And that was on the side of one of the buildings in Paris.

In fact, there were lots of them around the city.

And you know what they say Sometimes they say

that pride comes before a fall.

So sometimes it is possible to be too proud.

Just like this particular newspaper.

They thought that England were going to beat France.

But unfortunately, the French

in this particular situation were the better team.

Talking of

French, we are also talking about words, looking at words and phrases

connected to the English language that are used from or have been borrowed.

I use the word borrowed very loosely,

but borrowed from French.

And that's what we're looking at later on today.

I should also tell you that today's live stream is a little bit shorter than normal,

We are going to take a look at some words, some phrases that are used well,

they used in the French language, but as you know, if you have studied English for a long time,

you will know that quite a lot of words in English

come from other languages

or they have been slightly changed or altered and then used in English.

Maybe the spelling has been changed,

maybe the meanings are different, but quite often

you will notice that the words are very easy

to identify the ones that have been taken from other languages

and here in the English language we do use

many French words in everyday life.

We'll be looking at that a little bit later on.

It's time to study English.

We are looking at French words that are used in the English language.

We will go through some of them right now.

Are you ready?

French In English, It is quite common

to see words from other languages in the English

language used in their original form.

It isn't unusual, but you might notice

that most of the words that are used in that way

tend to be French.

I suppose in certain ways we are neighbours,

we are very close to each other.

There is just a little bit of ocean, a little bit of sea dividing us from them.

So we are pretty much neighbours.

So I suppose it's no coincidence many words and phrases are used

in the English language and we're going to look at some of them right now.

Are you ready?

First of all, the first word that we use

in English that is actually French

is the word rendezvous.

Rendezvous.

It is an arranged meeting

at a certain place quite often.

Also at a certain time you will have a meeting, a gathering,

you will meet together, you will have a rendezvous,

You will meet at a certain place.

Quite often.

At a certain time you will have a place normally prearranged.

You will arrange the place to have your rendezvous.

It's a great word. So to meet.

To meet in a certain place at a certain time, you meet together,

you join up, you get together,

you have a pre arranged meeting.

It is a rendezvous.

Very nice.

Oh, here's another one.

If you like watching mime artist.

It's like this. They pretend

to be trapped inside a glass box

like I am right now.

See, I'm trapped behind this screen.

Quite often we use the word silhouette to describe the outline of something,

especially when the details of the object cannot be seen.

So you might say the outline of something

or the shape of a shadow, the silhouette.

So something that can't be seen clearly quite often.

It is something that is lit from behind,

but you can't see the detail of that thing.

You can only see the outline of that particular thing.

We describe it as a silhouette.

Very nice. And yes, it is used

in English,

even though it comes from the French language, it is used

quite a lot, something that is not clearly seen.

You can only see the outline.

It is a silhouette.

Here's another one.

This one is cash.

Cash.

Now, this is not spelt in the same way as money,

which is c a, s h, This is a different spelling.

You can see that.

And this particular word means a quantity of supplies,

something that is gathered or kept in a certain place,

normally a quantity of something is a cash.

You might have a cash of food,

something kept in a safe place,

something that you will use over a period of time,

the quantity of supplies, things that you need, you

you have kept them or put in a certain place.

Also in computing as well.

Quite often we will use the word cash to describe

a temporary memory, maybe a place where something is kept inside

the computer in the memory for a temporary period of time.

Quite often, if you are watching a video, normally you will need

to do something called buffering,

which means a certain amount of information has to be read

first before the video is played.

And quite often if you are looking at something on the internet or maybe you are writing something

or editing a video, quite often will also need some cache

memory cache, a place where

a certain amount of information is stored

quite often temporarily is another one.

Oh, this is one

we often use these in everyday English.

Sometimes when we are trying to be clever we will use these.

The word is cliche, cliche

a cliche.

It's an overused thought or idea.

Something that a person says that seems witty

or amusing to them,

but to the person listening, it is something that is that has been done many times before,

something that a person has said many times

or something that has been done many times.

It is not original.

It is something unoriginal.

Or I suppose the other word we could use is trite.

I like that word.

So something that's been done many times before and someone is doing it,

maybe they think they are being clever or smart, but they're not.

Because what they are doing or what they are saying is a cliche.

You might say that this

that I'm doing today is a cliche.

When we think of French people, we often think of

the beret, the hat,

and we often think of striped clothing

as well, quite often a t shirt or a long sleeve shirt.

So this my appearance today

could be described as a cliche

or stereotype, and that is what it means in French.

So the stereotype of something that has been done many times before,

something we think of, but it is not original.

It is something that has been done many times

before.

Here is another one

cul de sac.

This is used in English,

and quite often you will see streets, small

streets or roads that end.

Suddenly they have no way through.

So a cul de sac is a road that you can go up

or along, but there is no way through.

You can go up and, down, but you can't go through.

It is a dead end.

So a dead end is a cul de sac, a road

that has no way through, unfortunately.

And as I understand it, the French

pronunciation of cul de sac,

the definition is bottom of the back.

I think it is the bottom of the bag.

And another one, this is a very common one.

I think you will know this one very well.

Oh, Mr.

Duncan, you have you have the little thingy there.

Look very nice.

You've made it look all French.

Cafe, cafe, cafe, cafe.

It is a word that literally means coffee.

Although quite often these days we will say cafe

to mean anywhere that serves drinks and snacks,

normally a place with a very relaxed atmosphere.

So it isn't formal.

It is something that is relaxed.

Maybe there is seating inside for people

to sit at and drink their tea or coffee or their lovely snacks,

or maybe quite often outside as well, on the streets.

And that's what I did with Mr. Steve. When we went to Paris.

We sat in the street, we sat outside a cafe drinking coffee,

and it was very nice, a small eatery or coffee shop.

Of course, it can also be a place that sells snacks

and tea as well as coffee,

so not necessarily a place that only sells coffee.

So quite often we will use the word cafe

as a generic word for a place to go into

to have a snack and a cup of tea or a cup of coffee.

So we often use that to mean a place

where we can grab something to eat quickly.

And you might notice there as well there was an interesting word

eatery, a word

that means a place to consume food eatery.

So this is a real word.

It looks made up, but it is real, an eatery.

So when we talk about a place that is designed

food to be served and consumed, we can call it an eatery.

And the generic term is

here's another one.

Oh, Mr.

Dunkin, you're very good with your French spelling. You.

And Ambassador, envoy

or a representative is often referred to

as an attaché.

Attaché.

So a person who has a certain amount of authority, quite often

they are connected with the government or maybe an embassy of a certain country.

They will travel to different places and have discussions and meetings.

Quite often that person will be described as an attaché

and maybe that person is representing a certain country

like Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain,

or maybe a person who is travelling from one place

to another to represent that particular country.

Diplomat I suppose we can also use the word diplomat.

They often represent their own country

normally on behalf of the government,

quite often pale mirror, says Mr.

Duncan. What about Bistro?

Yes, I believe Bistro is very similar.

It is a small cafe or maybe a place that serves hot food.

And Palmira says it comes

from the Russian word bistro, which means quickly.

So a place where you can go and get food

fast or quickly without having to wait.

BISTRO Yes, you are right.

I remember when I was in Paris, I saw a lot of places

using the word bistro, a place where you can go in

and have a meal quickly.

You don't have to wait for a long time to be served.

Bistro I like that one.

I think it's easier to learn French

than it is to learn many other languages,

especially if you already have a grasp of English.

because they're so similar to words that are used in English.

So I always find that quite interesting.

as a phrase used quite often in English.

This is for all those who are into art.

Maybe you are a person who is artistic

and you love art very much.

Film noir.

It is a certain genre which also is a French word genre,

which means a thing of a particular category, the category genre.

It is belonging to a certain category.

So film noir is a darkly filmed movie,

normally with gloomy themes.

So we often think of film noir when we are talking about movies

from maybe the late forties, 1950s.

There were a lot of film noir

movies made during that time.

Often they were filmed in black and white, of course,

and quite often the themes were dark.

Maybe, maybe it is fair to say that film

noir is a type of filmmaking

that is not particularly pleasant or happy.

So quite often there are tragedies or difficulties,

or maybe a person is in love with someone, but that other person does not love them.

Maybe there is some sort of romantic story taking place,

but everything is hidden within the shadow

is it is a certain type of moviemaking

that we call film noir

a darkly filmed movie with gloomy themes.

Talking of which,

here is another word that derives

from the French language cinema.

When you go to the cinema, you go to see a movie, you go to watch the latest movie.

Have you been to see the latest Avatar movie?

A lot of people talking about it.

I've never seen the first one.

If I was honest with you, I've never seen the first Avatar movie.

I was not interested.

Too many people were talking about it, so I did want to go and see it.
