it's a new day it's a new week but it is  the same old me for which i apologise right  

now here we go then yes it's a beautiful  sunny day and it's looking rather nice and  

dare i say it autumnal you can see many of the  leaves on the trees are now starting to turn  

as autumn finally arrives here we are then we  are back together with another english addict  

quick fix coming to you from the birthplace of the  english language which just happens to be england

are we really here again

hi everybody this is mr duncan  in england how are you today  

are you okay i hope so are you happy i hope you  are feeling super duper tip top fine and dandy

my name is duncan do i really  need to introduce myself  

i seem to be on youtube all the time at the  moment i'm sure you must know who i am i talk  

about english i love the english language in  fact you might say that i am an english addict  

did you see yesterday we were talking  all about different types of addiction  

not only english but other things as well thank  you very much by the way for your lovely response  

to yesterday's live stream a lot of people got in  touch to say wow what an incredible live stream  

yesterday you talked about some very deep and  maybe for some people controversial subjects  

but i think you should be allowed to talk  about anything discussing sharing your opinions  

even if we don't agree with each other i am a firm  believer that talking about things is the best way  

not always to solve problems so even if you talk  about things for hours days weeks months or in  

some cases years it doesn't necessarily solve  the problem but the important thing is there is  

some sort of dialogue taking place a conversation  is taking place even if the subject is not easy  

to talk about it is better to talk about  something that is not easy to discuss  

than not to talk about it at all  and that often builds mistrust  

so that's my belief anyway here we go it's another  live stream this is my final week of special live  

streams to celebrate my 15th year and that is the  reason why i have one of these on my hat 15 years  

next sunday will be the official birthday so  not only the queen of england the queen of  

england has two birthdays did you know that she  has her real birthday and her official birthday  

where all the soldiers march around and lots  of guns are fired into the sky and many pigeons  

fly away and hide but we also have an official  birthday for my life and also my recorded  

english channel which is this the thing you are  watching right now so next sunday we are going to  

celebrate i'm not sure what we're going to do  at the moment i haven't decided nothing too big  

nothing too grand but we will be  commemorating my 15th anniversary  

i wonder if youtube will  send any gift or any message

it is a bad day some people  don't like mondays at all

as i've said before i don't mind mondays mondays  are okay especially when the weather is as nice  

as it is today look at that behind me we have some  amazing weather today it is bright sunny mild as  

well it really does not feel as if november  is just around the corner it does not feel  

that late in the year it feels rather spring-like  

if you if you asked me to tell  you what the weather felt like  

i would say that it felt spring-like outside  but no next week of course november arrives  

it doesn't feel like it we are having some really  glorious weather and as if you needed any proof  

look at that right now so that is the view  outside the window right at this very moment  

in time it's looking nice not too bad  and also my more familiar view the one  

that i'm sure you are very familiar with and  you can see a lot of blue sky around today

because i am that old i remember the  1990s that's how old i am mr duncan  

were you really around in the 1990s what what  was it like living in the 1990s was it good it  

was all right yes it wasn't too bad we had we had  some interesting things happening in the world  

we had friends on television we had  what else did we have we had seinfeld  

we had a lot of good tv shows to watch the  1990s and a lot of people would use the word  

guys guys so if you were addressing a group of  people if you were talking to a group of people  

or you were coming into a room and there were some  of your friends sitting around quite often you  

would say hi guys now quite often we associate the  word guy with man or male but in fact during the  

1990s people would use guys as a general term for  a group of people even if some of them were female  

and some were male in the same place you would  still say hi guys i'm not sure about nowadays  

politically things have changed quite a  lot but i do remember way back in the 1990s  

wow such a long time ago before youtube before  we had any of that stuff there was none of it  

but i do remember we used to use the  word guys as a general term for everyone

entering into well i suppose  i was in my my late 20s and  

at the end of the 1990s i was in my early  30s so i would say that the 1990s for me  

was was in my in my 20s and then into my early  30s was the 1990s however i suppose for me

my teenage years were in the 1980s and i  suppose all of the things that i i started  

to like and started to admire or enjoy all of  that occurred in the 1980s however by the time  

the 1990s came i had sort of established my view  of the world or so i thought little did i know  

that after the 1990s and as the new  millennium arrived there were many new  

and exciting adventures waiting for me and i think  you know what i'm talking about including this  

i always see this as an adventure it's like an  adventure every day especially when i'm live  

because i don't know what's going to happen  i don't know what's going to happen i don't  

know what you're going to say sometimes  i don't even know what i'm going to say  

but i still say it mohsen says in the 1990s i was  a child yet it seems like such a long time ago  

i don't know if you've noticed but if you ever  see maybe a news item or maybe a news report that  

was done maybe in the early 1990s it looks quite  old it looks old-fashioned the the quality of the  

picture and and the way it is filmed and edited  it looks old-fashioned it almost looks like it  

is from the 1980s so it's very interesting to note  that in the early 1990s a lot of the fashion and a  

lot of the things people did were still almost in  the 1980s so it did take maybe two or three years  

before the 1980s faded away it might sound  strange but if you lived through the 1980s  

into the 1990s i'm sure you will agree  that it did take a while the music  

the fashion everything took a while  before it started to look new and fresh

or am i wrong am i completely wrong the  1990s there was some good music around  

although as you know i still believe  that the best music was in the 1980s

a job a job you might have a type of job there are  many ways of expressing jobs maybe the collective  

nouns that we use when we are talking about  people who work in a certain place for a certain  

company and it always amazes me one of the things  that always amazes me is is how how do you run  

a big company i often think of these things  normally when i'm asleep or trying to get to sleep  

at night how do you run a big company so imagine  i'm sure you can think of many big companies  

so i can think of maybe for example supermarkets  so there are big chains or brands of supermarkets  

i always think of supermarkets like tesco tesco  is a huge company and they have branches here in  

the uk but also around the world so i always find  it amazing when when you hear about the logistics  

and the way in which huge companies  are run and how they actually do it  

so if you are running a small company maybe you  only have two or three people working for you  

or with you then i suppose it's much easier but  even then there are a lot of things you have to do  

there is a lot of paperwork you have to record  all of your sales you have to make sure that  

your workers or the people working for you are  happy so even if you are running a small company  

the amount of work you have to do is is incredible  so imagine if you are running one of these huge  

multi-corporations that have branches uh and  maybe shops or offices all around the world  

incredible i i can't even begin to imagine what  that must be like delivering food another thing  

that always amazes me is how supermarkets are  able to get such a high volume of food into  

each of their branches each of their supermarkets  i always find all of that quite fascinating  

and of course a lot of it happens during the night  if you drive along the motorways here in the uk  

at night you will see lots and lots  of huge lorries and quite often  

well certainly a lot of them are supermarket  lorries they are delivering the fresh goods  

or the fresh produce in the early morning but i  do find those sort of things quite fascinating  

just just organizing those things  preparing those things incredible

if you ask me you just run a company as  smoothly as possible you need to be on top of  

everything yes i think if you if you have a  large company if you are part of a large company  

i think you will find your level of management  is quite vast solid so you have to have a solid  

management team and i think that's  always the part that fascinates me is how  

all of these different teams all of these  different areas communicate with each other  

and how things well i'm sure things do go wrong  sometimes but it is it is the whole network the  

chain the the management chain the worker chain  all of these things that have to be monitored

hello ricardo all companies run with teams  and the management only gear them yes  

i did used to work for quite a large company a  number of years ago they they no longer exist  

it's not my fault but they were they were they had  a lot of management and sometimes i think in large  

companies you can sometimes have too many managers  too many people giving out the instructions  

or making the instructions or the orders so i  think sometimes in large companies i i think the  

one one of the companies big companies that have  been criticized over the years is the bbc the bbc  

the british broadcasting corporation is well  known for having lots of levels of management  

people overseeing certain departments and they are  often criticized for wasting money public money  

on teams of managers and having lots of levels of  management so the bbc is one of those companies  

especially at the moment that over the next two  or three years the whole future of the bbc is  

going to be decided there are going to be some big  changes made but that at the moment is early days  

eric oh mr duncan by the way there  is a new show called that 90s show  

oh yes i remember i remember that 70s show i  didn't know there was one called that 90s show  

it is the same as the 70s show but it is also  nostalgic yes it always seems strange to me  

that people reminisce or remember the 1990s as  if it is a long long time ago in the distant past  

but to me the 1990s is a recent memory so i  remember lots of things from the 90s or the 1990s  

for example i i started traveling quite a lot  during the 1990s so i didn't actually start  

traveling abroad i didn't fly in a plane  until 1991 so 1991 was the first time that  

i actually went up in an airplane with mr  steve so we shared that experience together

but yes the 1990s to me is still quite  vivid i remember it quite clearly  

in fact christina is asking about  the situation with the truck drivers  

the lorry drivers how is the situation in the  uk well no no it hasn't really been resolved  

but not many people are talking about it  at the moment but it hasn't actually been  

solved or settled at all so no that is still  happening we haven't sorted that problem out

tomek says communication and transparency  is the key to running any business i reckon  

yes regardless of the size of the company  there are certain rules that you have to follow  

certain ways or methods of doing things i think  you're right yes good one ricardo says the bbc  

is a dependent or no dependent company and  the and this is very difficult to manage

over the years and i think the bbc is a very  good example of showing how things have changed  

over the years as far as the the business  side of a large company how it can change  

those changes have have been  a lot over the last few years  

so the strange thing about the bbc is that it is  funded by us the taxpayer so we all have to pay a  

certain amount of money every year to fund the bbc  however over the years the bbc has gone off into  

private enterprise doing things and setting up  side companies that are still using the bbc name  

so that is one of the reasons why there is more  pressure on the bbc being completely privatized  

so we will not have to pay the bbc for for  their their money and their their running costs

but we will see what happens there it is  a very hot topic here in the country here  

in this country at the moment a very hot  topic the funding and the future of the bbc

hello to palmyra today my nephew has flown from  liverpool to lithuania and the ticket only cost  

five pounds it really did palmyra  i have a feeling maybe your nephew  

was flying with ryanair i think  that's one of those budget discount  

airlines so i would imagine it would be ryanair  ryanair is a very well-known airline and a  

very well-known company because they do very  cheap flights and sometimes you can get them  

incredibly cheap so maybe it was ryanair or  maybe easyjet so those two companies actually  

do provide a service they provide flights that are  quite cheap so maybe it was maybe it was ryanair  

i must admit i i i'm trying to remember if  i've ever flown with ryanair i'm not quite  

sure i think i think maybe i have i think maybe  i have palmyra says yes mr duncan it was ryanair  

and sometimes you can get some good deals with  ryanair but the problem is and this is one of the  

things they've been criticized for over the years  is quite often they have lots of hidden costs  

so maybe if you want to book a ticket and  then you want to bring some luggage onto  

the plane you will have to pay extra money so  you have to be careful sometimes if you go with  

budget airlines cheap airlines you might  find that there are some hidden costs  

that you will have to pay so your ticket might  be 5 pounds or 20 pounds but then suddenly there  

are some extra charges that you have to pay  on top so it's it might look cheap sometimes  

but you can also find that in the end you  have to pay a lot of money unfortunately  

yes ryanair they are they are both loved and hated  by people so it depends on your experience with  

the company if you if you have a good experience  with the company then you will love them but if  

you have a bad experience with the company  then you will hate them so it really does

it really does depend on your experience  with them to be honest christina says i  

have always travelled with ryanair although  it has some pretty boring baggage rules yes  

there are many hidden costs that you  might have to pay not always but sometimes

especially when the plane starts moving and  shaking i have been on some terrible flights

i i am not a good flyer i can be quite nervous  when i'm on a plane i will agree with you there

travelled with many airlines over the years  one of my favourite airlines well two of them  

two of them um malaysia airlines i used them a lot  

over the years i've flown many times  over very long distances with malaysia  

airlines and i've always enjoyed them i've  always thought they were a good service  

even though they did have some very serious  problems a few years ago for various reasons

you should always think positive when you take  an airplane i do i try my best and one of the  

things many people do when they get onto an  airplane is they drink alcohol which actually  

is the worst thing you can do it is  it doesn't help in fact in some cases  

it might make you worse it might make you feel  worse and more nervous about what is happening

rosa says i like to travel but i don't like  to go in an airplane it isn't comfortable  

maybe in first class

i've never flown first class and  i have a feeling that i never will  

it would have to be something  that other people have paid for  

because i can't afford it british airways have  you seen how expensive how expensive it is  

to travel by british airways one of the  most expensive airlines in the world just  

for a basic ticket you are talking six or seven  hundred pounds and if you want to go first class  

with british airways maybe two or  three thousand pounds for a ticket  

that's too expensive so i can  see why a lot of people are using  

budget airlines like ryanair and easyjet so they  are two very popular ones the hardest part of  

a flight the hardest part is taking off well  i would say the hardest part is taking off  

but also landing as well but yes you are  right the most crucial stages of any flight  

apparently is the first few moments as the plane  leaves the runway and takes off apparently that  

is one of the most crucial parts of the  flight that is where things can go wrong  

that is where if there is a technical problem  or a mechanical problem quite often they will  

be discovered quite quickly and also one of  the problems i hope no one's taking a flight  

by the way one of the big problems with  taking off is you don't have enough height  

so if something goes wrong you are still climbing  you are still going up so if if you have a major  

problem with the plane that is the reason why  many planes crash just after take-off if there  

is a mechanical problem because you don't have  the altitude you don't have time to put it right

i'm sure that has cheered everyone up i  hope i have cheered you up on this monday

on ryanair you even have to pay for  the air you have to pay for breathing

what is the longest flight you've ever taken i  have taken a flight it was 13 and a half hours

13 and a half hours and that was when i was going  over to malaysia a night flight to malaysia and  

it was it was over 13 hours sitting on a plane  in economy so i wasn't in first class i wasn't  

enjoying all of that lovely leg room i i didn't  have a bed i just had a small chair and you know  

what happens when you sit in economy there are  always people around you who are quite annoying  

to be near there is always someone in front  of you who wants to push their seat right back

you know who i mean and and the other problem when  you're flying is quite often the person next to  

you wants to put their their their elbow on on the  seat on the seat so your elbow rest so quite often  

people will take the elbow rest next to  them as they're sitting down so flying  

is not the best experience sadly i have never  experienced first class or business class ever  

and i probably never will but i can only  dream it must be lovely it must be very nice  

so we've been mentioning business  businesses workers workers rights  

and i suppose all of these things can  be defined as the work environment  

so when we talk about the work environment we  are talking about the place in which we live  

but also all the things connected and involved  with that work as well so the word work covers  

a lot of things your work place the place you  work the thing you do the company you work for  

maybe you work for a small company  maybe you work for a large company  

so there are many words we can use when connecting  

things we do in our situation to the workplace  for example personnel is a good word the personnel  

quite often we use this word to describe those  that work for a company the people that work  

in your place the people that work  with you or for you generally speaking  

we often use the word personnel when we  are talking about the people who work for  

a company your personnel what i find  interesting is it almost sounds like personal  

and you would be right in thinking that so the  personnel are the people working for a company  

another word we can use staff staff this is a word  we often use in british english so quite often you  

will hear the word staff used when we are talking  about people in the workplace those working for  

a company your staff maybe there is a place where  the people working for you can meet and have food  

your staff room also those working in schools  as well teachers are often referred to as staff  

as well i suppose another one we can use is  employees i like this one employees the employees  

work for an employer an employer employs  employees so the people working for someone are  

the employees very nice here's another one we  often use the word team this is something i  

was talking to steve about i think it was last  week and your team normally is part of a group  

of employees so quite often you you will divide  your employees into groups and then they will be  

referred to as teams the group of people working  together as a team we sometimes use the word body  

as well it seems like a strange word to use  but a group of people a team of people together  

can be described as a body a group of things  or a group of things associated with each other  

we can also use workforce as well  your workforce the workforce is

your personnel the people working for you is  the workforce however we can also use this word  

generically to describe the workforce in a country  so all of the people around the country who are  

employed by various different companies they  are the workforce the workforce of a nation the  

workforce of a company so the workforce is often  used in a very generic term or way workers the  

workers this always sounds a little old-fashioned  i don't know why whenever i think of workers it  

sound it sounds like something from the 1920s the  workers the workers coming out of the coal mines  

after their long shift underground another phrase  that sounds a little old-fashioned labour force  

your labour force is your workers or are your  workers they are the people that are working  

for you they are the people doing the heavy work  or the hard work so we often think of the word  

labour as being something that is done that  might also be hard or difficult or gruelling  

i like that word gruelling gruelling something  that is gruelling is difficult it is hard work  

here is a phrase the first time i  ever heard this phrase i thought

it sounded rather odd it sounded a little  cold and clinical and maybe unfeeling  

human resources most companies  nowadays have a department where  

they deal with all of the problems  that arise concerning their employees  

human resources is the department that  normally deals with those problems i think

it's a very strange term what do  you think it sounds rather cold  

it sounds like something from a george  orwell novel you must go to human resources  

human resources will deal with your problem  they will sort your problem out so i always  

think human resources is a very strange term it  sounds very cold and unfeeling what do you think  

do you agree with me or do you think it is  okay quite often it will be abbreviated to hr  

human resources but many companies nowadays  do have a department where they deal with  

all the problems that arise concerning those  working for them disputes or maybe punishment  

normally they are those things are handled  or taken care of by human resources  

here's another one staff rotation so quite often  if you work for a big company if you work for a  

large company you might find that people work  for a certain amount of time and then they will  

take a rest maybe for a day or a couple of  days so your staff rotation normally happens  

if you are in a place that has long working hours  or maybe a place that never closes like a factory  

a place where people always have to be there  so quite often you will have a staff rotation  

we often call this a rotor rotor or schedule as  well so your staff rotation you decide when people  

are working and for how long they work and you  always make sure that all of your staff have a  

period of time when they can rest contract oh i'm  sure we all know this one i think we all know this  

your contract quite often when you start  a job you will normally have to sign some  

contract or some sort or a type of contract  to decide how long you work for how much your  

pay will be how many days holiday you get all  of the conditions surrounding your employment  

normally it is contained within a contract but of  course there are many different types of contract  

you might have a temporary contract so perhaps you  are working in a place for a short period of time  

a good example is here in the uk where  normally around christmas time the post office  

the company responsible for delivering everyone's  mail and parcels they will often employ extra  

people during christmas time and the period of  time before christmas because many people are  

sending parcels and letters through the mail so  quite often they will have extra workers extra  

staff working for the post office but their  contracts will not be full time they will just  

be temporary they will not be permanent they  will just be temporary during that busy period  

another type of contract that we have here and  it has been quite controversial over the years is  

something called a zero hours contract and as its  name suggests it means you don't have any contract  

you work for a company but you don't actually  have any agreed contract you have no hours that  

you have to work you have no holiday pay and  in many cases you have no health care either  

so quite often zero hours contracts are  given out in this country quite often for  

maybe supermarkets maybe large companies where  they need lots of people working for them  

temporarily not permanently temporarily  so quite often zero hours contracts  

quite a controversial thing over the past two  or three years in this country because more and  

more companies in the uk are using zero hours  contracts and then finally before we finish we  

have something called gig contract gig the  gig economy i'm sure you've heard of this  

so a lot of people these days they work for  a company and they have a contract they have  

a lot of security however if you have a  gig contract or maybe you are on gig hours  

or perhaps you are in an area that is known as  the gig economy that means you have no security  

whatsoever you have no security nothing has  been assured there is no contract nothing so  

maybe you have to work when you are required but  it doesn't mean your job is permanent or safe  

sometimes you might go through the whole  month without working at all and then you  

will earn no money whatsoever so that is one  of the the most i would say it might be unfair

if you are working under a gig  contract or maybe a zero hours contract  

but also you will be amazed how many  people nowadays work for themselves  

and quite often their their income or their  earnings or their salary is not guaranteed  

i suppose a good example of that  would be an actor if you are acting  

maybe you appear in the theatre or maybe you get  small parts on a television show or in a movie  

but unfortunately you you might find that you are  having long periods of time where you are doing  

no work at all and that can also be described  as gig economy the gig economy you are part  

of a group of people whose work is not  guaranteed you might work for a whole month  

but the following month you won't work  at all you will have no work at all

it's been a big problem a big problem over the  past well i would say maybe five or maybe even  

10 years i think this zero hours contract  the the situation where you have no security  

and maybe also your your job  might end at any time is not good  

but i think many companies now are starting  to to not do that especially at the moment  

because we are finding it hard to get people  to work in certain areas in certain professions

but that's all i'm saying about that i'm  not going to say anything else about that

as controversial but we did talk about  some interesting subjects yesterday  

so if you haven't watched yesterday's live stream  with myself and mr steve i do strongly suggest  

that you watch the whole two hours maybe you can  watch a little piece of it or a small part of it  

and then have a rest and then watch another  part of it later so you don't have to watch  

the whole live stream in one go maybe  you can watch a little bit of it and

hello marwah is the word gig an acronym it is not  it is actually a proper word gig unfortunately  

there is no there is no derivation so i don't  actually know where it comes from in fact nobody  

does even the oxford english dictionary doesn't  know where gig comes from with that particular  

definition so we don't know we don't know  where it comes from its origin is unknown
