hi everybody welcome to another live stream on a Sunday afternoon

I hope you are feeling well i am here at the moment with a recorded message before we begin

today's live stream i am here it at Lake Vyrnwy in wales mr steve's mother is also here as

well and we are having a very lovely time indeed

I hope you will stay with us today for this wonderful two hours of live english coming

to you from the birthplace of the english language which just happens to be...

we are back together again oh no i can't believe it have you had a good week i hope it's been

very nice hi everybody this is mr duncan in england how are you today are you okay i hope

so are you happy i hope you are feeling happy today i have had a crazy week i'm not going

to lie i'm not going to pretend everything this week has been very busy we've had a special

guest staying here with us and it's been a wonderful week we've been to many places we've

had a lot of food i have to be honest with you we have eaten quite a lot of food yes

we had mr steve's mother staying with us this week which of course meant that my studio

had to be taken to pieces so over the past couple of days i've been putting everything

back together but of course you know what happens whenever you move something or put

something in a certain place quite often you forget where you've put it so there have been

a few things that i've put in a particular place but then afterwards i've forgotten where

i put it so i have been trying to find various things including my reading glasses which

i really do need without my reading glasses i can't see anything i can't read your your

live messages unfortunately so anyway i found them they're here i have them now here we

go then yes we are back on a sunday and it is english addict my name is mr duncan what's

yours i wonder what your name is you can tell me because we have the live chat right here

today so i hope you are feeling good it's very strange because everything in the studio

is is in a slightly different place so i haven't put my studio back together in exactly the

same place so everything seems seems a little weird a little odd so if i if i seem a little

bit distracted or disoriented today you will know why because everything is slightly different

in here including the lighting which makes me look as if i'm standing in a dark shadow

i don't know why anyway i hope you can see me all right the name of the game is english

and that is what we do here we share our love of the english language you might even say

that we are english addicts coming up today we have lots of things besides you on the

live chat we also have we're talking about one particular subject today we are talking

about first world problems this is something i mentioned a few weeks ago although i did

not go into the subject itself so we will be talking about that with mr steve and also

myself also we will be looking at some abbreviations they seem to be everywhere don't they abbreviations

are everywhere everywhere you look you can hear people instead of saying the whole thing

quite often people will abbreviate they will shorten the thing that they want to say quite

often it is the name of an organization or maybe some sort of action that happens quite

often in day-to-day life so we will often abbreviate things sentences words some people

say we do it because we are lazy some people say we do it because it saves time so we are

talking about abbreviations and of course we will be looking at some lovely pictures

of our time spent

with mr steve's mother she was with us this week and it's been almost two years can you

believe it almost two years since mr steve's mother was with us almost two years can you

believe it so that is one of the reasons why we had such a good time because it's been

a long time since i last saw steve's mother a very long time indeed here is a photograph

from our time together this is the picture that i posted on my facebook page there it

is you can see myself and also you can see mr steve's mother looking very happy we had

so much laughter we did we laughed all the time we were making jokes we were making fun

of each other

we were doing all sorts of crazy things in fact you wouldn't believe the things we got

up to and also mr steve is there on the end looking very mischievous so mr steve and his

mother and also me at the front as usual pulling a very silly face and we had a great time

and as you know the place that we went to Lake Vyrnwy is actually one of my most favourite

places to visit not very far away from where we live so it's it's it's quite quick to get

to normally around about an hour you can drive there it's very peaceful there were not many

people there i was surprised that actually there were not as many people there as we

thought so we had a lovely time we had a nice meal at the local hotel and mr steve's mum

had a wonderful time in fact we all did we enjoyed it a lot and it was nice having her

here with us as i said we had quite a few laughs quite a few smiles some funny moments

so lots of things were happening during our trip to Lake Vyrnwy which is in wales if you've

never been there i suggest you go there because it is the most amazing place ah and hopefully

we will be seeing mr steve's mother in a couple of weeks because we will be going over to

see her

so we will be going to see mr steve's mother where she lives hopefully in a couple of weeks

from now lots of things going on in the world some of them happy and some of them not so

happy i'm sure you don't need me to tell you what the unhappy things are i'm pretty sure

you know what they are i know what they are in fact i think we all know what they are

we will be having a long break today because my voice i don't know why my voice has been

a bit bad for the past couple of days i don't know why i have a feeling it might be because

of the air quality in this area because at the moment the harvest season has started

and there are many farmers at the moment busily working they are working twice as fast as

they normally would so many farmers at this time of year have started doing their harvesting

and in fact many of them are doing it later than they normally would

and there you can see this is something i filmed a couple of days ago and you can see

one of the farmers very close to where i live cutting harvesting collecting all the grain

in the fields and there is another shot a beautiful shot of a combine harvester these

pieces of equipment are very expensive so most farmers don't buy combine harvesters

because they are very expensive so most farmers will actually rent they will actually rent

the combine harvester because they are very expensive pieces of equipment and of course

they are only used a couple of times each year during the harvest season and there you

can see there is a tractor a farmer driving a tractor collecting all of the bales and

stacking them onto a trailer so everything is used nothing goes to waste

so that is what is happening at the moment around here we have the harvest season and

i think that's the reason why my throat is a little bit bad at the moment because what

i think is happening i think all of the dust from the harvest all of the tiny particles

of dust are actually affecting my throat in this area so i think maybe that is why my

voice is a little bit rough around the edges today yes we do have mr steve coming in a

few moments i have been asked to talk about food however i also had a message during the

week from one of my regular viewers saying mr duncan would you mind not eating during

your live stream because we don't like the sound of your your chomping your chewing sounds

so today i promise i will not be eating any food here in the studio i will not be doing

it even though it's very tempting as you know i love food very much quite a lot in fact

we also have the live chat and yes we have made it to the end of another weekend and

almost the end of another month because september is just around the corner yes it's sunday

yes we are back together again even though my voice does not want to work i am back with

you again i think the other reason why my voice might be bad is because i've been doing

a lot of talking during the week we have been talking with mr steve's mum laughing joking

singing everything in fact so what a what an amazing week and i suppose also i would

say also it's been a very long time since we've socialized with other people because

of lockdown social distancing all of that however something i i should mention on where

when was it was it saturday i think it was saturday or friday maybe friday we went to

buy some bird food from the local shop that caters for all of the farmers in this area

and the one thing i noticed when i went in was how few people were wearing masks it would

appear that the habit of wearing masks has now faded it would appear fewer and fewer

people are are actually wearing masks in shops and yes even yesterday we went into much wenlock

and we went into one of the main supermarkets in much wenlock and most of the people in

there were also not wearing masks and the reason for that is because the laws have all

been relaxed so you don't have to wear a mask when you go into a shop the the laws have

been relaxed so it would appear that most people are now not wearing masks even though

mr steve and myself we were still wearing ours i must admit i did feel slightly foolish

doing it because everyone else didn't have a mask so only mr steve and myself had masks

in the shop yesterday so it was very strange it would appear that a lot of people are very

eager to get back to normal i think so hello to the live chat i suppose i should say hello

to you mmm who was first on today's live chat i wonder let's have a look shall we oh very

interesting very intriguing um it would appear once again

that vitas is first on today's live chat well done vitas you are first again

we really do have to find out what your secret is what is your secret what is the secret

of your fast finger even i want to know i have become intrigued by how vitas is always

able to get onto the live chat before anyone else so how are you doing it vytas can you

tell me please oh by the way it's a lovely day today it's very nice outside would you

like to have a look there it is there is the view today it's a beautiful day we've had

some sunshine some cloud but we are having beautiful weather and that's the other thing

that was good about last week because mr steve's mum was here and we were able to go out every

day because the weather was so nice lots of sunshine not too much but it is dry and that

is the most important thing of all it is not raining and it would appear that the next

few days it is also going to be dry and sunny very good

i can't complain about that even though sometimes people do like to complain have you noticed

sometimes people do complain about things sometimes we complain about things that we

should not sometimes we behave like spoiled children do you think sometimes we behave

like spoilt children when we can't have something that we want quite often we will complain

about something very trivial or small and we often describe these things as first world

problems we are talking about that later on but now we are going to go into the kitchen

for a few moments i hope you will enjoy this and then i can rest my voice and mr steve

will be making himself comfortable here in the studio here we are now in the kitchen

this is something recorded and we are busy making one of mr steve's favorite cakes this

is a certain type of cake called a scone or as some people say scone and then after this

he will not be recorded he will be live mr steve we'll be right here after this little

moment in the kitchen hi everybody welcome to mr duncan's kitchen on a saturday night

and guess what mr steve is going to show us how to make his magic scones the only problem

is we are missing one important ingredient and that is mr steve come on mr steve hello

hello here he is here i am this normally is an english teaching channel but today it's

a cookery channel so you can learn how to make scones or scones and learn some new english

words as well so without any more messing about let's get on with it shall we i'm ready

mr duncan i have all my ingredients laid out here on this rather small area that i'm going

to make these scones on so right the most important thing is this uh weighing device

scales and i use the old-fashioned uh non-electronic ones i've had these since i was about 20.

right so first ingredient of course i've got my cookery book here this is a very big the

good housekeeping guide mr duncan monster but good housekeeping book i've had this again

my mother bought this for me when i was about 18 when i left home and it's got everything

in here you could possibly want to cook so on page 378 it tells me how to make scones

so the first thing is i want eight ounces of self-raising flour so we're going to weigh

this here we go eight full ounces it's self-raising of course because we want the scones to rise

in the oven so that they're nice and delicate and spongy and nice to eat so we also want

to make it rise even more so we add some baking powder so it just helps it to rise a bit more

so how much do we want mr duncan baking powder we want one level teaspoon now here is my

magic spoons uh they have all the uh the different measurements that you might need in cookery

so uh what did i say half a teaspoon or a whole teaspoon mr duncan you're the chef what

does it say let's check again one level teaspoon of baking powder there we go uh we also want

some salt we want half a teaspoon of salt which sounds odd for cakes let's just uh i

don't know why we put salt in i think it's because that's just a flavour so we need to

sieve everything to make sure there aren't any lumps and it also helps to mix the ingredients

plus i just like sitting sieve this is a sieve so it takes out all the lumps and also creates

my goodness a big cloud of flour at the same time i'll put this over here there we go so

i'll give it a bit of a mix i'll give it a bit of a mix mr duncan just to make sure that

all those other ingredients are mixed up now they would say you want cool hands for baking

because if your hands are sticky and hot everything gets sticky right now we've got to add some

fat to this mr duncan how much do we need we want one to two ounces of butter which

is 25 to 50 grams uh eight ounces of flour by the way is 225 grams of flour so i'm going

to add two ounces because i can and two ounces will make it just a little bit more rich than

it otherwise would have been in fact i might just add a little bit more there we go two

ounces of fat any old fat will do so we put the the fat into there with the flour and

then we've got to mix it all up i like this bit so you sort of squash the flour with the

fat and eventually it all sort of combines together now i should be using a bigger bowl

really can you describe this as kneading no this isn't kneading yet this is just sort

of mixing you're just blending the fat with the flour and what happens is it turns into

sort of crumbs it's quite magic the way it happens and of course we need to get it nice

and evenly mixed up here we go make sure it's all blended in i'm not really using the correct

bowl you normally use a bigger bowl but i haven't got one because i broke it it's only

recently that i've started actually baking again now can you see what's happened here

mr duncan all the flour has blended with the fat and we've got sort of breadcrumbs a breadcrumby

effect yes it's quite magic isn't it so i can't believe that this will eventually become

scones well it will and i'm just i can feel the odd little bit of fat here so i'm just

trying to blend it in to make sure it's all correctly done because we don't want any sort

of lumps of unblended fat right my mother always used to say you want cool hands for

making cakes right there we go it's always messy doing this don't expect this to be not

messy wear all old clothes now we need to add some milk we want a quarter of a pint

of milk or 150 mls now don't add it all in at once because this is quite important because

we don't want the mixture to become sticky we want it to go into a consistency that's

a bit like bread dough so i'm going to add a quarter of a pint of milk we're not going

to put it all in but we're going to leave some of it out because we don't want it to

get sticky because we won't be able to turn it into nice shapes if it does go too sticky

then we can just add some more flour to it and i'm going to get in there with my hands

because there's nothing more satisfying than kneading a bit of dough that's perfect mr

duncan we just want it like that so that we can just it doesn't stick to our hands if

it sticks your hands add more flour but it's best to add less than they suggest right so

next stage mr duncan is that i like fruit scones here's the fruit raisins there we go

i like raisins i like sweet scones but mr duncan wants cheese in his oh yes there we

go so there's some cheese that i grated one of the things i've noticed steve is if you

grate cheese it becomes more much easier to handle you can you can handle it much easier

right so because mr duncan wants cheese in his i'm going to split this in half and then

i'm going to um make the cheese ones with one half so i'll approximately cut it in half

like that i'll just see whether they are the same eight ounces eight ounces so that's mr

duncan so these approximately the same and now i'm going to put cheese in we probably

should have done this before but it doesn't matter we can do it afterwards so there in

goes the cheese and then i'm just going to sort of mash it in there so you're mixing

the cheese into the dough yes but probably if i wasn't splitting this into two lots i

would have probably added the cheese in when i was mixing it in earlier but because mr

duncan's awkward and he wants cheese i do then i'm gonna i'm gonna mix it in now i love

cheese it doesn't really matter because we've got the perfect consistency for the dough

here it's not sticking to my fingers so we'll blend the cheese in there you can add all

sorts of things to this you might be interested to note that i haven't added any sugar to

this because you don't have to for scones right there's mr duncan's that's ready we're

not going to overdo it the secret we're cooking you don't overdo it now i'm going to split

it into three i'm going to roll it a bit and i'm going to split it into three scones for

mr duncan yeah because he's important so there we go well i didn't know i might be able to

get more than three i'll do three because that'll be quite nice there we go they're

going to be very big scones they are going to be very big scones now all i'm going to

do is roll them like that not going to mess around with them and put them onto a baking

sheet which has some flour on because i don't want it to stick

we don't need to be fussy with this you can get proper things for cutting out nice shapes

but we're not going to bother we're just going to shovel onto the baking tray like that and

then here's mine i don't want cheese in mine so we want raisins in mind so i'm just going

to add a handful of raisins that'll do we'd have to measure it just a few so i'm going

to just blend that in the flute like i did with the cheese and out of one mixture i've

got two different types of spoon which is i think that's very clever of me don't you

i think it's very not only clever but also resourceful yes it shouldn't really handle

this very much because uh it can affect the way it rises now i'm going to get three scones

out of this as well there we go one two that's about right one

there we go don't need to be too precise with it roll it up stick it on the on the baking

tray that's ready to go in the oven one more thing to do we're just going to uh glaze we're

going to put some milk on the top which just when they bake it gives it a nice colour you

can use egg mixture for this which makes it look a bit better it just gives it a nice

colour when it's cooked it makes them look brown egg egg works better but you waste a

whole egg just to to just to do this right one baking tray into a hot oven so so now

we're going to put these into the oven here we go oh can you see what i've already got

in there mr duncan mr steve has mr steve you have something else i have our tea cooking

in there already which is chili con carn i assume so the oven's already on so i'm not

wasting electricity by just putting it on to cook the scones i've got the chilli in

the bottom scones in the top right now we've got to time this mr duncan there we go we'll

start that okay it's done mr duncan the scones are in the oven what we're going to do we're

going to have a little break and then we're going to come back to see if the chili con

car and also the scones have cooked as they should and then we'll eat them tomorrow live

we will have one of the scones on the live stream okay does that sound like a good idea

they're ready mr duncan switch that off okay mr duncan they're coming out of the oven yeah

look at that oh my goodness and i shall put them on this cooling rack there we go oh my

god voila look at those now they are the most amazing scones that i've ever seen um i had

to put them in for 15 minutes uh because they hadn't really browned off okay yours have

browned off more than mine your these are the cheese ones here and these are obviously

the fruit ones here yeah yours are browned off more because i think it's because they've

got cheese in them but they will be done yeah i think it's safe to say that we have success

one thing worth mentioning if something is browned off it can also mean annoyed or if

you are sick and tired of something something can make you feel annoyed you are you are

you've had enough of it you are feeling down you're feeling depressed you are feeling browned

off anyway that's it steve let's go shall we yes i often feel browned off with mr duncan

around that's nice you like my clothes they're all warm and toasty steve's got his oven gloves

they are very warm right we're off to cook the rest of tonight's meal and tomorrow we'll

eat the scones yes on the live stream tomorrow we are going to eat one of these scones each

i will have a cheese one and mr steve will have one of the fruit scones and that's it

i will return you back live to the studio

we're not only back live but also we are back live with the man himself the man who this

week invited his mother over to see us and didn't we have a lovely time we've spoken

about it already we did have a lovely time i must talk slower a few people have commented

that they can't always understand what i am saying so i will make a special effort during

this live stream to just slow down a little and pronounce my words clearly for all to

hear yes is that better i don't think you have to go that slowly okay to be honest but

just i think the problem is and this is a common problem with people learning a new

language any language so this does nothing include just english it includes every language

is the speed at which native speakers use the language so if you go around we we've

met people native english speakers who who speak slowly quickly they they have an accent

so there are there are countless many ways of of speaking english or any language so

some people might say it or say the words clearly and slowly some people might mispronounce

words some people with a very strong accent might also do the same thing it does happen

but i think sometimes with steve he gets very excited in his words will become very mixed

i always get excited when i'm on the live stream mr duncan few people have been asking

questions about the scones how much flour went in how much salt what temperature is

the oven at things like that i think if you just search on the internet google or other

search engines scones are very basic cakes to make they're not difficult the recipe will

be everywhere yes for them that's it um so i don't need to go into any depth about the

exact recipe unless of course lots of people ask me that's it but i think scones or scones

okay don't forget we can say oh we had one yesterday well that's what i was going to

say we actually went we found a new place to eat in much wenlock i don't know what happens

but every time a place closes down or changes into a different type of business we always

manage to find another place to eat at so there is a new place that we've started going

to and the food there is delicious it's nice it's local and we took mr steve's mother there

as well would you like to see something funny steve belso would you like to see your mother

supervising you whilst you were working in the garden so this is mr steve's mum see if

you can see where mr steve's mother is in this clip here it is now

so you can see mr steve very busy working but sitting in the chair supervising i think

this is great by the way it's your mother she was there what was your mother doing was

she was she giving you instructions or giving me all sorts of orders occasionally she'd

point at me um i remember when she got up at one point and pretended that she got a

whip oh in her hand because she was going to you know give me a whip to get me to work

harder in the same way that you whip a horse okay that sounds like it to uh to gallop faster

that sounds like too much information there but it's funny because my mother's only joking

and we have quite a lot she doesn't like she does look like she's asleep there yes um well

she was not nobody's asking of course what i'm doing i am of course mixing soil uh to

plant those laurel bushes yes so so steve has decided to plant some new bushes and also

um you have to feed them as well with some nice new soil and that's what mr steve is

doing he's digging a hole in which to put the actual plants but he's also mixing some

some i suppose you would call it fertilizer um it's just uh just soil just some yes it's

just not because the soil under there that i don't i dug a trench to put these plants

in but the soil that i dug out the trench is a long hole wide normally very wide because

i was putting several plants in otherwise i'd have just dug one hole and the soil is

very poor quality because there were conifers that were growing there before okay and conifers

suck all the nutrients out of the soil well any tree does really but conifers in particular

are renowned for it so i wanted to put some um organic material into the soil that's what

that is the compost yeah so so something with some nutrients yes it was um soil conditioner

okay something to improve the organic material in the soil so that it retains water and i

added a little p some fertilizer as well just to encourage the root growth of the new plants

yes that i put in otherwise i mean they would grow but they would grow poorly and slowly

that's it and i want them to grow quickly so that we can have a hedge there to block

out their neighbours so hopefully in a couple of years time those those tiny laurel bushes

will be taller than mr steve i just love that i love the fact that your mother is sitting

there watching you and giving you directions i think that's brilliant look at this a.d

yes who um addie i'm sure it's 80. okay um

told us last week he was going to california and he is in california but he's still joining

the live stream because he's in the car and got nothing to do so he says you are now in

california in california i'm very jealous i know watching us in the car isn't that wonderful

that's fantastic the efforts that people go to to watch our show you're not driving you're

not driving are you that is commitment don't don't drive and text at the same time don't

send me live messages if you're driving i don't want to be responsible for for any law

breaking i think that's very impressive to be honest um but then we have lots of viewers

who watches even though they're doing other things they've got people around they're maybe

doing housework you know lots of people watch us in all sorts of circumstances and make

the effort it's fantastic yes well by the way giovanni the unit of weight on the scales

because it's the uk we've got two units on there we've got pounds and ounces which is

the traditional weight and measure in the uk but also we've got grams as well and being

somebody who was born in the 60s i tend to still use pounds and ounces but people younger

than myself will use the grams and all the weighing devices in the uk tend to have both

on yes whereas probably in europe they've probably only got grams on so let's say them

again grams grams and ounces so those are the two measurements that we often use when

we are weighing things here in the uk yes good we we use both good and uh but yeah that

just thought i'd i'd mention that this is interesting yes um go on i've missed it okay

that's good steve that's another magic moment of youtube yes no it was sergio made a comment

about oh yes let's play master and servant i think he's referring to a song by um let's

play master and servant who's that by can't remember who it's by now

but of course he's referring to the fact that mum is the master and i'm the servant i think

or the mistress yeah what's that group somebody tell me tell me surgery depeche mode the pesh

mode that's it

isn't that the group that you go mad about oh i used to love them yes and you can't remember

the name i can never i can never remember names i'm very bad at it but then you shouldn't

say that because you will not get better if you keep convincing yourself you're not good

at names by repeating it to yourself if you say so yes what about length and measurement

do you still use inches it depends what it's for it depends what your matter is it does

depend what you're measuring at the time yes we often use inches when we are measuring

small things or short things so if you're measuring something that's not very long then

you use inches or maybe even centimetres he's joking of course um no we still use in this

country most people use feet and inches um we don't really tend to use centimetres very

much for measuring height do we i hate meters i don't know what if somebody said to me you're

120 centimetres i mean i know that's over a meter but you know if somebody says six

foot to me i know what that is six feet i can see six feet but i can't see 184 centimetres

184 centimetres doesn't mean anything but if you say six feet i know what six feet is

i know it it's six feet which is my height is roughly yes even though you know we went

metric oh yes in the 1970s people still tend to use the old measurements it's the same

we use miles here not kilometers kilometers means very little to me i can't picture it

because i grew up with miles but then on the other hand i couldn't use pound shillings

and pence well you can't anyway but we just you know it's a hundred pennies to a pound

so that's metrics nobody is using shillings anymore depeche mode everyone's talking about

depeche mode yeah it's a good group is it depeche mode is it the peshmerga or the it

was from the 1980s one of the one of the the best groups around in the 1980s yes they were

fantastic yes anyway we are straying way way off from the subjects that we're talking about

steve was very busy in the garden yesterday would you like to see mr steve

mowing the lawn but i i've made some slight changes so this is mr steve cutting the lawn

as he often does at the weekend but with some slight differences

oh mr duncan

oh that's made me laugh and it's my it's me i haven't seen that when did you do that mr

duncan what did i do when you were cutting the lawn no i meant when did you edit the

video to make it faster and funnier oh this this morning when i was trying to do 20 things

at the same time i had a very hectic morning because well first of all i was rebuilding

the studio yes and then i couldn't find things because i'd put them somewhere i know you

do this don't you sometimes steve no sometimes put things away and then you can't remember

where you've put them no i never do that mr duncan you do it literally all the time oh

no my brain is sharp i'm focused i know what i'm doing at all times you know what that

reminds me of what what what i just showed it reminds me of that time i was playing on

the swings in the in the park shall we have a look at that just for a laugh i'm a big

boy now you certainly are oh okay there you are you had that beard then didn't you mr

duncan yes yes and when we were making the scones did you see it when we were making

the scones i had my beard then as well oh thank you nissa admiring my clothes again

nissan always makes comments about my clothes you are in blue yes somebody described it

the other few weeks ago is French blue yes it's very nice it's a very pleasant colour

it's very old it's very old top you don't realize that there are so many different shades

of blue you always think that blue is just one colour but this actually i think you have

light blue so that must be the french blue but this one here this is also blue it's darker

and quite often we refer to that as navy navy blue navy blue yes very dark blue because

the sailors don't they wear navy blue i don't know yeah you wouldn't say i think you would

know more about that than me but they do either navy blue is dark blue it's a but yes it's

a particular sort of it's a sombre colour yes it's sort of used in fact my mother always

tends to wear navy blue it's a very conservative colour to wear uh you're not going to offend

anyone you just look smart and it's just a very conservative colour but my mother has

been getting complaints from people or comments i should say comments what about that she

great i'm only it's all a joke what are we doing then today mr duncan well we're talking

about a couple of subjects one of them is it refers to the way we behave not us personally

but people in certain parts of the world and we're talking about something called first

world problems right okay yes now in the past i know this is a very old-fashioned term but

we often just describe developed countries countries that live with a certain level of

economic stability as being first world countries now i don't particularly like that term i

don't like it but we do use it and i'm not here to judge whether a term is right or wrong

but first world problems are things we often refer to when we are talking about the small

things that are inconveniencing us but they are they're not very important no because

we don't have to worry about food shelter safety so instead we worry about other things

which people in other countries might think what on earth are they moaning and complaining

about at least they've got the basics so i haven't even got that i'm not criticizing

any other part of the world i'm just saying that that's that the term we often use and

i suppose we should first of all look at what that actually means so when we are talking

about first world problems we are talking about things other than what one might take

for granted such as clean water or electricity so those are the things that are there and

you expect them to be there in fact quite often we say that we take them for granted

so when you switch on your light you plug your tv into the wall and it works you don't

think about it you just do it when you turn the tap in your kitchen fresh clean water

comes out you don't think about it you just take it for granted but we are talking about

other things that are small or trivial

small problems or inconveniences that appear more important than they actually are are

often referred to as first world problems they are problems that we see as something

very big and important but in fact they are not they are small things and i suppose we

could think of some examples well we'll we'll take a look at a couple of examples in a moment

for example steve we've all done this running out of milk or not being able to buy the milk

you want so maybe you go to the supermarket and you want to buy a particular type of milk

because you're very fussy about the type of milk that you drink yes and you can't find

the one you want maybe you have low-fat milk or non-dairy and there are many different

types of milk now that are not actually milk they are made with other things such as i

suppose almonds you can have almond milk oat milk oat milk it's disgusting by the way they're

all disgusting but a lot of people nowadays do prefer to have those things so they might

complain they might feel annoyed if they can't find them but those things are very small

problems even if that person feels annoyed outraged angry that they can't find their

favourite milk haven't you got any organic semi-skimmed milk in this supermarket this

is terrible what a terrible situation and then you're upset for the rest of the day

not us not us well i've got to speak i've got to carry on speaking slowly because uh

mary alba is saying omg such a lovely episode today with scones mr steve's mother and mr

steve talking slowly so i've got to keep remembering to speak clearly and slowly but yes first

world problems things which you would think were very unimportant that people in poorer

countries might criticize you for saying for goodness sake at least you've got milk you

know don't complain about the fact that you can't get organic semi-skimmed so not everyone

can get milk anyway not everyone can have milk in their kitchen not a lot there are

people that don't have kitchens and there someone is complaining they're they're complaining

about the fact they can't get their particular type of milk yes it is a first world problem

victoria says living in peace can be taken for granted but it is not at all no as we've

seen on the news recently reminded yet again of the plight of people in other countries

yes um here's another one steve maybe your car it's not as nice as your neighbors yes

and it's a very small thing but you might be worried that your car is older than your

neighbours but you have a car and you can drive that car around it works perfectly well

however you think you have a problem you think you have a big problem because your car is

not as nice as your neighbours yes you you might another example could be you might have

a coffee maker at home you might have spent a thousand pounds on a coffee maker which

some of them do cost that much easily and it's not working it's broken down and you're

complaining my coffee maker isn't working anymore i've got to have instant coffee oh

it's horrible disgust i can't believe that i'm having to live like this nest cafe with

my instant coffee okay steve i'm not sure if he's really reacting now but that would

be a first world problem if you've got coffee you've got to have coffee made in a coffee

maker that you've spent thousands of pounds on at home yes and it's broken so that's the

problem so i think the best way to describe this is is maybe a situation where a person

is behaving spoilt like a child when it can't have its favourite sweet i want that mummy

i want it and i want it now that sort of situation where we talk about something or we get angry

about something that we can't have maybe a person complains because they're 50 megabytes

per second internet speed is not fast enough oh my internet speed is only 50 megabytes

per second i wish it was a hundred or two hundred it's not fair that there are people

in the next town and they have 500 megabytes and i only have 50. but 50 is more than enough

that's all you need that's all you need you need well in fact you only need about five

to function every day unless of course your whole family is using the internet at the

same time but 50 megabytes is a lot per second but there are people who might moan about

that they'll say no no no i should have 200 megabytes per second it's not fair just be

thankful that you have internet just be thankful and that's it you see mobile phones valentina

mentions mobile phones young generations take it for granted that having a mobile phone

when i was young it didn't exist but i lived very well yes that i think i sometimes think

that particularly as you get older and more affluent you get more money because you've

worked for a long time you build up possessions you live in and go and live in a nice neighbourhood

i think you become i i think you always want something to moan about i think we keep forgetting

to remind ourselves every day the value of what we've got and i think we need to remind

ourselves every day you know what we've actually got health if you've got your health that's

everything if you've got you know a roof over your head you've got food you don't have to

worry about money for food things like if you've got those basic things you've you know

you've that's all you need really and all the other things are just fripperies they're

just i mean in a modern society you have to have internet you have to have no mobile phones

computers otherwise you couldn't work no but certainly over the past 20 months it's yes

first world problems it's problems associated with things which are not essential really

yes or maybe you have something already that is good but you think it could always be better

and then you complain about it you complain about the fact that my internet speed is too

slow my neighbour's car is better than mine yes tomic mentions where says we're hardwired

to get used to things which are luxuries yes i think there is always a way of encouraging

people to keep buying things i don't want to get too much into that because that is

a whole different subject to be honest but i think sometimes people behave like spoiled

children because they have everything they want the essential things for for living for

getting through the day but they want more or they want things that are better or something

that might make them appear better i was reading a book recently and it said you know remind

yourself every day of what you have what are the valuable things which you have just remind

yourself and then you won't get down or dip down and depressed about the things which

you think you should have but you haven't got for example you might want you know a

mercedes top-line s-class or something like that but in fact you already have a car yes

so you can go from a to b yes remind yourself of the things which you've already got and

then you won't worry about the things which you haven't got and yeah we've often said

if we lost everything and were living had to live in a cardboard box at least we'd have

something yes you know each other so it it you're able to see the things you have and

the things that you you should really probably be be more pleased about having but quite

often we forget about them instead we complain about small trivial things here's another

one i was going to say that's why sometimes it's good and

to do something which brings you back to basics like going on holiday say just go camping

for a week very basic holiday somewhere without all the luxuries without all the luxuries

and then you'll appreciate them when you get back but yes we just get used to things the

way they are and we forget that a lot of the things which we've got we probably don't really

need and in fact i mean we've got friends haven't we who keep and neighbours people

that we know you're not going to mention any names but they keep buying sheds and putting

another shed in the garden oh i need another one because they keep buying things and they've

got nowhere to store them in the house so they buy a shed so they can store these things

in the shed so they've used up all the space in the house for consumerism buying stuff

which they don't really need i mean for example everybody around here has a lawnmower that's

it i think we're straying off though in reality from where where really but we don't all need

a lawn though we could buy one for a group of seven and then each person uses that lawnmower

every day and then we've only got to purchase one we don't need a lawnmower each we don't

need a leaf blower okay every household he doesn't need a leaf steve this is not this

is becoming something coming in we're coming ranting now about wanton consumerism uh which

i hate it sounds like you know what i think i think mr steve might be a communist no it's

nothing it's not that much it's just sharing your plough with with the local community

but you know this would all help help the planet i mean i can never understand why they

encourage people to buy a new car every three years they should say buy that car and keep

it for 20 years surely that's better for the environment yes than making lots of new cars

every three years anyway but that's you know because this is this is not actually what

we're talking about this is none of that my soapbox is done steve steve we've got you

laid were the chickens indoors or outdoors which way was the wind blowing on that particular

day when this egg was laid can you tell me the name of the chicken and can i have a photograph

dogs and cats from war-torn areas because you will you are going to have a a hell of

hurt from the world all i would say is surely no no probably probably best priority would

be to save the humans first yes if you're going to try and fund an aeroplane to rescue

dogs and cats from a war-torn country you need to seriously think about your priorities

because surely you could hire a plane and save some humans but anyway yeah well i think

one of the problems nowadays there are people who live their daily lives and they see animals

such as cats and dogs as being more important and valuable than other human beings giovanni

complain about but really you should not be complaining about it at all because it's a

in other countries that don't have the benefits of the wealth that we have in the uk europe

uh would think that we were behaving in a very selfish way yes but i think it's just

that thing that you get used to something you get used to a certain way of life and

normally normally as you get older normally not always you probably get better jobs and

you probably earn more money and then you reach a stage in your life where you've got

everything you need but then you know you always want something more and so you start

getting upset about all the trivial things yes and uh so that's what i mean when a person

behaves like a spoiled child yes it's like worrying about your neighbour whose dog barks

for five minutes a day i know i think that's that's a that's a good one to get annoyed

about especially when it happens five or six times a day maybe we could send that one on

the plane that's going out are there any planes going out with that will take cats and dogs

instead of coming coming back i'm gonna get into trouble for that now i've had it that's

it i'm not sure if if our viewers know exactly what uh story we're talking about are you

joking are you kidding me do you realize that every person on the planet knows that story

well i didn't know about that story until you mentioned it to me this morning and i

was boiling inside with rage at the lunacy of what they were proposing to do we are talking

about abbreviations in a moment abbreviations a very interesting subject because we often

use abbreviations in everyday language we will say

hello you phoned them i didn't complain hello is that waitrose they charged me for it that's

different they charged me for the pizza but hadn't delivered it so i didn't complain i

just pointed it out to them and they said oh thank you for letting us know mr harper

we will refund you the three pounds 50 for that pizza i mean you know that's it's a sort

of a but you know you you don't want to be ripped off well i don't think they're ripping

i've heard that the so-called first world is falling into pieces right now well yes

for various reasons various reasons yes uh right

game no sentence game not today that's why we're having our our abbreviations you see

so that's kind of the replacement for the sentence game but uh oh we had a little surprise

the other morning i was lying in bed and i heard a very strange sound a very strange

noise i heard it sounded like air escaping and i thought maybe it was mr steve breaking

wind as he often does quite often he will break wind so hard that the duvet the cover

on the bed flies off it flies up it's gone it's gone completely we have to go and retrieve

it from the front garden but it wasn't that it was something rather unusual something

outside the house something flying over the house and there it is from from the bedroom

window there was a hot air balloon going over the house right over the house very low and

you could hear the sound of the the flame that is used to to introduce the hot air into

the balloon we were fast asleep yes woken up by the sound of

flames going into a balloon wow

that's that's the sound i woke up to there it is again at the back of the house yes this

balloon was hovering around or should i say floating it was floating it wasn't hovering

when something hovers it normally stays in one place but when something floats it means

it is moving through the sky with no visible means of support so there is a difference

between those two things but there it is a balloon floating by i know there must have

been six of them passed right over the top of the house yes there were lots of them lots

of them apparently this weekend there is a big balloon festival very close to where we

live so all of these balloons were coming over but this one came over the house at about

seven o'clock in the morning it was very early and it woke me up i wanted to complain to

be honest what about you steve would you ever would you ever go would you ever go up in

a hot air balloon i've been in a tethered hot air balloon that's not the same i know

tethered that means it was tied it had a bit of rope that only allowed it to go so far

into the sky would i get well i don't know only probably if i was peer pressured into

doing it for example if i was on a work trip and they might say we're going up in a hot

air let's all go up in a hot air balloon and i you know i would probably feel the need

to do it so that people didn't think i was scared i mean we had something at work a team

building exercise can you believe this are you are you now getting it yes we won't go

into that are you going to talk about something that's nothing to do with the subject yes

was it walking on hot cold yes okay that's it that's the story by the way that's it that's

the story i've just saved i've just saved you five minutes of mr steve telling a story

the company made them walk on hot coal well they decided it would be a good idea yeah

again to help us you know that was the short version of it because it's sales they're always

wanting you to push the barriers and and try different things so they think oh if we make

these sales people walk over hot coals their sales will go up all that actually happened

was that several people got very burnt feet yeah it all went horribly wrong and some people

ended up in hospital i didn't do it no no this is very interesting very interesting

steve uh giovanni says by the way i would not thanks for asking by the way i would not

go up in a hot air balloon at all oh it's always all about you mr duncan because i i've

i've seen i've seen so many of these disasters recently there was one i think it was in the

united states where a hot air balloon struck a power cable and the basket caught fire with

the people inside it and then the balloon detached from the basket and the basket fell

to the ground and everyone killed so no and some people say i would go up in a hot air

balloon if they had a parachute but it wouldn't work because you're too low and you have to

be trained in using a parachute well yes but what i'm saying is you're too low anyway the

parachute would be no good because you have to be quite high up for the parachute to work

properly so even if you had a parachute by the time you jumped out you would be so close

to the ground the force of your body would still be very great giovanni says that those

those balloons that came over our house were spies wanting to know about your channel trust

me trust me there is no one there is no external force out there interested in my youtube channel

steve was not saying things that could you get a screenshot of that could somebody please

save that that moment take a screenshot of of mr steve not saying anything florence went

in a hot air balloon and was very scared i think i would be yeah and they don't they

don't have toilets on hot air balloons you know so so what happens if you want a wee

you just go over the side what about what down it goes through the basket what about

a poop is there a little flap under the basket and where does the poop go well you wait till

you're over a house or someone you don't like or someone you don't like um i i would like

to know how they manoeuvre them what sort of degree of control do they have over where

the balloon goes well i had to imagine they do have control some i mean i mean they can't

go against the wind it's got to be basically going in the same direction as the wind but

uh you know do they can they sort of i mean you thought they got flaps or something in

the balloon yes i think there is a steering mechanism there is something that they can

use it's a thing they they put up and pull down that allows the balloon to catch the

wind and so they are able to control some kind of rudimentary control like a rudder

if we said rudimentary it means very basic and probably not very good but at least they've

got some control um yes do they eat and drink i think they do i think you can sort of if

you go on an organized balloon trip yes i think they've got sort of hampers they've

got a barbecue they're just yes they just cook the food on the flame yes just got a

fork and some burgers oh yeah that's

sort of like like barbecue you can just you can just put your food up to the flame so

and then it it cooks the food yes that's very funny that is very well you you could i think

you can some of them have got quite i wonder how many people can you get in the in a balloon

basket well some of the baskets it varies because there are small baskets and there

are big baskets so it depends on the size of the balloon so the balloon is not always

the same size some of them are much larger so the larger the balloon the larger the basket

so by just by simple physics really that's how it works but toilets what what happens

if you need a wee maybe they give you a bottle maybe there's a big bottle that you can you

can have a wee into yes they change the height of the balloon by uh by putting more hot air

in if you put more hot air into the balloon obviously it will go higher that's altitude

that's altitude and if they stop putting the hot air in it'll cool and gradually sink but

can they sort of you know sort of get things to manoeuvre i mean they've got to go with

the direction of the wind but can they sort of sort of move a bit within that they must

have some control because or else there would just be lots and lots of hot air balloons

everywhere and just all going in the wrong direction avitas says you're not allowed to

take anything with you in the balloon can't i take my big lung sharp needle probably it's

all to do with weight can you play darts on a hot air balloon they don't want you taking

things and then sort of deliberately throwing them out to try and hit people what about

archery

but you know i mean it's like it's like anything in life everything's risky isn't it uh it's

you just got to weigh up the risks there are balloon tragedies that's one way of putting

it i suppose uh just like there are helicopter

are you going to crashes all the crashes that exist but it's just you know weighing up the

risk what about dropping a chance is probably very slim about slipping over on some dog

poop uh that's that's that's a crash you're falling over because someone carelessly let

their dog poo poo on the pavement

yes so uh no i ha i have been in a balloon but it was tethered yes it was tied to the

ground tied to the ground so um and it didn't i probably only went up 100 feet or something

that's nothing 100 feet what's that 30 meters something like that is it uh

no one cares by the way about that not many people have said that i has anybody actually

been in a hot air balloon yes i don't think it's a thing that i don't think it's a common

thing i i've never met anyone who has been in a hot air balloon i will be honest with

you it's very rare i don't think it's something that people do often what are you doing today

well i am going up in a hot air balloon oh okay i wasn't expecting that are you oh uh

nobody's no flammable drinks on the balloon

with any alcohol do you mean alcohol then yeah it might set fire yeah well i think it

might explode i mean you know sergio's sort of

vodka is probably 100 percent alcohol yes highly flammable probably maybe i'm joking

oh yeah so uh one little stray flame and that bottle of vodka will explode and cause a tragedy

because you didn't have time well i've had a busy day i had a busy day i couldn't find

my reading glasses and that's terrible because without my reading glasses i won't be able

put them somewhere and i couldn't remember where i put them so no sentence game because

and they don't really exist no one's been in one that was strange though having hot

air balloons going over the house it was strange they could have crashed into our chimney yes

well again i i don't think hot air balloons demolish houses they they move very slowly

so if if a hot air balloon was coming towards your house i think you'd have plenty of time

to run downstairs and get out before it it bumped gently into your chimney belarussia

has been on a hot air balloon oh um tell me more because it was a present and it would

be a birthday present and it would be impolite to refuse to go yes that's um yes if somebody

buys you a present as a flight on a hot air balloon you would feel as though you would

have to go even if you didn't want to i just exchange it for something else a pair of socks

no one has ever fallen out of a pair of socks valentina says i would have refused

but never mind oh giovanni mentioned something and this reminds me of a very funny thing

that we did once have you ever been in a cable car i have and i hated it we went on a cable

car many years ago in madeira and i actually filmed it which was a big mistake because

i was absolutely petrified i was so scared i was screaming like like a little [ __ ] girl

yes if you won't go in uh in a cable car there's no way you're gonna go in a balloon it was

horrible because because you could you can feel you can feel the as as the cable car

goes along now and again it will go over something where where the the things are supporting

the cable so every time it went over those little sections the cable car would suddenly

do that and i i hated that and when you looked out the window there was nothing underneath

you just just space for you to fall from and through so i did not like that i do not like

cable cars and to be honest i did scream like a little girl and it's on videotape somewhere

it's on video i'll have to show it one day i'll try to find it but it's very embarrassing

i was 10 minutes late how on earth are we going to fit 20 minutes with interesting comment

for our viewers well the first hour and 40 minutes wasn't wasn't that good to be honest

that's very funny and there's there's a guy that's trying to climb up some crates and

halfway up he falls and breaks his neck apparently that's the latest craze client literally breaks

his neck what they do is you you put you stack milk crates i don't know where they're getting

milk crates from because i've never i can't remember the last time i saw a milk crate

but apparently they they put milk crates on top of each other like like a pyramid and

you run up from one side and the idea is you have to get to the top and then back down

but unfortunately most people don't get halfway by the time they get halfway all of the crates

start to collapse and the person falls in the most uncomfortable way possible can you

imagine falling on top of lots of milk crates and apparently now tick-tock has now banned

people doing this or uploading videos because apparently lots of people are getting hurt

and injured can i just say i do worry sometimes about the human race i do i worry about people

under the age of 25. they want excitement well okay they're bored they want excitement

jimmy says why don't we invite questions well we we people are always asking questions and

we try to answer as many of them as we can yes well this is it um well well that's why

we have the live chat if you want to ask a question as long as it's nothing too difficult

don't ask about the sub atomic particles of the inside of mr steve's underpants because

well defence if you if you inform the feds then you are telling the fbi you are giving

them some very important information i think from what i understand it's the sort of next

level up from the police so if the police sort of might solve a crime or something that's

going on but if it's very serious and involves more complicated matters uh or national security

that the cia is often involved with espionage spying things that might be harmful to national

security so yes the cia the central intelligence what's the a stand for agency i think it is

agency central intelligence agency that's good anyway we have this one here anyone aidy's

got it sharian's got it oh good um yep definitely got the answers there itv is well in fact

it's one of the main tv channels here in the uk commercial channels and it stands for independent

television i t v so if you come here to the uk you will often see itv and all of its wonderful

high quality entertainment including britain's got talent it's the rival to the bbc isn't

it amazing shows the bbc british broadcasting corporation is uh funded by us and doesn't

have any advertising on it true which probably is difficult to believe for a lot of people

watching but the bbc has no adverts because we fund it we pay every citizen has to pay

i think it's 150 pounds something like that a year you'll be amazed how many people are

not paying their license fee anymore no but so it's it's been controversial for a number

of years but there are no adverts so we all have to pay for it automatically you have

to if you have a television in your house okay steve you have to pay for it whereas

the itv is as you say it's an independent network and it's funded by advertising that's

it so yeah yeah well in a lot of countries that's the only television that's available

not necessarily i know but in a lot of countries so i was pointing out the difference between

that and the bbc which is funded by us if you are unfortunate okay steve if you are

unfortunate to to live in a a place that is let's say more strictly controlled you will

find that there is state tv which what about channel 4 somebody else channel 4 is also

yes that is as i understand it channel 4 is independent from everything so it is a completely

independent organization and i if i'm not mistaken i think also it's partly paid for

by the government so it's funded not by the license payer but by the government itself

although there are talks now about privatizing channel 4 so they are going to offer that

to to a private organization whoever wants to own their own tv channel maybe we could

buy it yes maybe we could do some crowd funding yes so there's the bbc steve the bbc there

we've got that one yes the british broadcasting corporation and then we have another one here

w-h-o and this is one that we've heard a lot of over the past well i would say over the

past 20 months we've heard a lot from this organization apparently kyber yes is going

it is yes well done often seen as more left-wing let's just say left-wing although at the moment

they they're not sure where they are because they're trying their best not to criticize

the current us government so does that mean that it only comes through cable as i understand

it its origins yes although many it is worth noting that many tv channels in the united

states are cable channels but but of course cnn has been around for a very long time so

it has been around from for many many years indigo suggests cctv yes as an example well

that's interesting because cctv has more than one use so it can be closed circuit television

but also it can be chinese television as well so cctv is also the communist china television

right so that's also cctv ah right but i suppose i suppose if you're in china nowadays it's

just everything everything watching you all the time giving you scores on how well you

cross the road and how politely you eat your food with your chopsticks yes i think so here's

if i can sergio's making a point that people can just google these well you can google

then you don't have to ever watch anything ever again or read anything ever again so

politicians that we have in our country well that's not that's not strictly true but that's

labour politician yes but he's he's no longer the leader but he was we have now a safe and

he's still there we have a now we now have a safe non-communist as the leader of the

labour party but yes i know what you're saying exactly but it hasn't really been far left

since since the mid 1990s when tony blair i'm not saying no we haven't i'm just talking

about individual politicians yes well i'm talking about generally well i started the

subject going yes right well left-wing politics is a general subject yes i don't i don't think

yeah anyway let's move on i can't believe i was just comparing yes is it bernie sanders

is seen as a very left-wing politician in america well to the left yes yes i know he's

seen as that yes but it's not really very left-wing if you compare it to what you know

americans think that that is left-wing extreme to them bernie sanders is seen as quite extreme
