It's probably if you were at work, it probably would be a bit of a laboured point to make.

So maybe you saw them on the second or 3rd of January.

So if you go to work and you've said happy to, happy New Year

to most of the people there, then there's no point.

But when is it too late?

When is it too late to say, Happy New Year?

So I know today it's the 18th of January.

Is that too late or does it just apply to people you haven't seen yet?

So what if you don't see them until July?

Do you say Happy New Year?

I think you can.

I think after the first week it gets a bit silly after the

maybe the first week of January, but you can say it in a sort of a jokey way.

So you can see somebody say today and

maybe a neighbour or well, not any of these neighbours.

We wouldn't wish them happy New Year.

But if it was a friend for example, and you met them for example, I'm seeing a friend of mine tomorrow

and you can just say it in a joking email, Happy New Year

and then laugh about it because you've just seen each other.

It's still January, but it's a bit of a joke.

You can say it in a jokey while.

It's almost it's almost as if you're you're recognising the fact that it's too late to say it.

Yeah, exactly that that is sort of saying it in a joke

because you recognising that it's too late and you probably should have messaged them

on the 1st of January and said Happy New Year, but you didn't anyway.

I hardly wear it.

So, you know, there's no moths.

Apparently, you remember years ago, lots of people were wearing those big coats

that looked as if they'd been inflated with air.

Well, apparently, the puffer coat is coming back.

It's the big thing for 2023.

Could be out in the fashion area.

The perfect coat.

So that's the coat that looks almost as if it's been inflated with air.

Right.

And apparently that's the hit, the hippest, coolest

and trendiest thing you can wear this year, even though we don't have one.

So if you want if you're that type of person that always likes to keep up with the fashions,

go out and buy is or go into your wardrobe

and look out the look up the puffy jacket that you kept from when it was last in fashion.

It's not puffy, it's puffer puffer.

Okay.

Some people see Jackie, some people might say it looks very puffy, but it isn't.

But apparently, yes, yes, they're back in fashion, so they sleeveless.

It is interesting how clothing comes back in fashion, though.

I think now there is one type of fashion

that has not become fashionable again.

And that is, of course, the large wide flats,

trousers that go really wide at the bottom.

Now, the last time we saw flares was in the late 1970s

and then they slowly went out of fashion during the 1980s.

So flash earlier than that.

Mr. Flash made jeans.

So they're they're narrow at the top,

but at the bottom they go out really wide.

So flared trousers, they become very wide,

sometimes 20, 25 inches at the bottom.

And I used to have a pair of flares as well.

I remember I went with my father

on a ferry across to France

and I was wearing my flares on that day and it was so windy on the boat.

It was so windy.

My flares were flapping like flags.

Were you helping to push the boat along Where.

Yeah, they were making the same sound as the flags.

They were very impractical. I hated them.

I think they might have come in in the mid seventies because I remember having some

when I was an early teenager. Oh,

and I didn't like them at all.

They were, as you say, they flapped around and if they got wet,

they were horrible when they got wet because of course in those days

you sort of went out in all weathers.

You didn't have your mum and dad to take you in the car to very many places.

So they used to get wet.

They were horrible. I hated them. I never liked them.

I didn't I didn't like standing out because I felt as though

people were looking at me with these flares and I didn't like it.

So what I think I think that will be the next big fashion

craze to come back from the past

flares, big, wide bottomed.

So I think they used to call them bellbottoms as well.

Bellbottom jeans or bell bellbottom trousers,

very narrow at the top and then wide at the bottom.

And I think one day they will be back in fashion anyway.

Well, first time this year on the channel, how is 2023?

How is it going for you?

I always think now if you want to write a good science

fiction movie or a screenplay or a novel,

I think one of the best years is to set

your story in is 2023,

because I think it sounds really futuristic.

So you might say the year is 2023.

Man has left the Earth.

The only people living now

are those who have been rejected by mankind,

and they've all gone to other planets.

The only problem is it's now 2023 is

the obvious flaw in your little plan there.

Well, that's it.

But I think I always think the best year, if you want to make it sound futuristic, is 2023.

Well, it was in the 1980s, I'd said, but now we can't do it because to say it has to be something else.

So maybe 30, 23 or 20, 50, 2050.

No, that doesn't sound futuristic.

I don't know why 2050 doesn't sound right.

So maybe the year is 2053.

I don't know why it has to have more than two syllables or three syllables.

But don't forget 20, 23, 2053 when it was the night we were in a different century.

When I say it sounded more when you were going into to something, Do you love 1904?

It's just the rhythm of the word. I don't know why.

So it's not the year itself, it's just the rhythm that that that year has.

Anything of the year 2000 sounded futuristic

in that, you know, in the 1980s or 1970s. Yes.

So so I remember in the 1970s, a lot of people were trying to guess

what the world would be like in 2020.

And they all got it wrong because they predicted

that, well, first of all, no one would be working.

Well, actually, they almost got that right.

And because during 2020 and 2021,

most people weren't working, so they could have got that one right.

But also they said that computers would be doing everything for us.

Not quite.

We still have a long way to go.

Flying cars.

No flying cars.

I'm afraid we can just about get cars

to drive on the road.

Yes, electric cars are starting.

People are beginning to see the flaws in them now.

So. Yes, well, certain fashion, certain fashions

do suit certain people stripes.

So people have stripes and sometimes they use stripes to make themselves

look maybe more more broader

or more slimmer.

So I can't remember which way it is.

I think vertical stripes, vertical stripes make you look taller and slimmer.

Horizontal stripes make you look wider.

And I think that's that's the general rule in fashion.

I think so, yeah.

So this is making me look especially slim,

I think, because the stripes are going down.

But then if you are already tall and slim

anyway, maybe you want to make yourself look a bit broader.

So you have some stripes going across, you know, because you don't have to

you know, you don't have to show off the fact that you're already tall and slim.

You might want to commit broad.

You don't want to look have been no, you don't look too thin.

We had some snow last night.

And look, there it is, the snow.

So this is what I filmed this morning.

Even though most of the snow has now gone because it's been raining.

But this morning we woke up and there was some snow on the ground.

I did get excited.

As you know, I am a big fan of snow and I decided to do some filming

just just some short clips.

You can see there is the Blackbird in the Garden.

So there it is.

I got rather excited because the weather forecast did

say that there was going to be some snow, but we didn't have that much here.

Just what you would describe as a dusting,

a dusting of snow, a bit

like if you were putting some icing on the top of a cake using a sieve,

you would just sort of you

would see that light icing dusting on the cake.

And so we have had a dusting of snow.

So just light snow just very not very much just covering the ground.

You know, we're not going to go out and make snowmen, but unfortunately,

most of it has now gone because it's been raining.

So just to prove that we've had some snow, I just couldn't resist pointing the camera outside

and the garden.

There is still some snow in the garden, but most of it has now gone.

Tell me about the way it's near her granddaughter's school waiting for a concert

to start a concert, she's no doubt in.

that was given to Steve for Christmas, and it's gone even more crazy now.

it has grown quite a lot is another thing.

And we still got that giant ladybird as well, which is,

So when you showed it the other week, I can't remember what it looked like.

We have a lot of things to talk about.

We are looking at cloning around clones.

Some people are afraid of clowns

and I have to be honest, as a child I did not like clowns.

They did scare me a little bit because, well, they are weird and slightly creepy

and some clowns are quite scary, to be honest.

But it doesn't help that there have been several films depicting clowns as murderers.

It doesn't help it. That doesn't help, does it?

But apparently it's very interesting how it came about.

So from that, from the foolish person or the person who is playing the fool,

or maybe a person who is maybe idiotic

even, or a peasant.

So the word clown does derive from that type of sense

in the sense of a person who is foolish, maybe not very clever,

maybe a person who is boorish.

Maybe they are not very refined in their character.

So that's where the word clown comes from.

I think it's from Denmark, Norwegian, and also

I think it's Norse as well.

So it's very interesting.

We are talking about clowning around and of course

I can't think of a better

pair of people to talk about that than two clowns

like us.

Would you say you haven't got a red nose, Mr.

Duncan I haven't got a red nose.

And we could have dressed up like clowns, except we haven't got any clown outfits.

That's the problem

that children love clowns because clowns act in a childish way.

They're adults acting like children.

I don't think they do.

I don't think kids like clown.

They scared me when I was a child because they would act in a slightly crazy

way, hence the word clown.

So if you are acting in an unruly, maybe in a very

unsavoury way, maybe you are causing a commotion or noise,

we will be looking at that laser anti clown.

Mr. Duncan. I am not anti clown.

I am all for the clowns.

If there are any clowns watching at the moment, I am not against you.

You have to be careful nowadays.

So I am all inclusive clowns,

jesters for all of them.

They're okay.

Unfortunately, you don't normally see clowns.

Sometimes you might hire a clown for a child's birthday,

But I only used to see them at the circus, and then they'd be sort of doing silly things.

And as you know, I love the English language and there are some words

and phrases that are interesting to look at.

Certainly when we are talking about words,

I thought it would be fun to look at some idioms connected to a certain part of the body.

Oh, yes.

And of course, there are many there are many parts of the body that you could talk about

and use in phrases.

Today we are looking at phrases

connected to your neck, neck idiom

and you might be surprised to find out how many idioms there are connected to your neck.

The neck is the thing in between your shoulders and your head.

Some people I've noticed, some people have very slim and long necks.

So I think I think my neck is quite long and yours is quite long as well.

Yes. Especially when you do that, you look like a tortoise coming out of his shell.

Yeah, It's everyone's anatomy is different.

Some people have sort of short necks,

others have long necks.

And yeah, the next quite a sensual area of

the body is as well can be if you kiss someone on their neck.

Can be.

They might get very excited.

Yes they might. Groans are very sensitive.

Yeah it's

yeah it's an interesting part of the body.

The neck

adds can add inches to your height or take inches off,

but it's also very vulnerable to damage. Yes.

And of course, if you want to chop someone's head off, it's a good place to it's a good place.

Yeah. Well, let's start.

Isn't this not the only place that's the only place you want to decapitate someone?

I mean, not that it detracts at all from his loveliness, but

let's face it, he is probably a very eligible man.

If you look at his neck is wider than his head, but then his shoulders are very wide.

So that makes up for it.

But it makes his head look like a peanut.

Yes. Well, of course, if you're a Formula One driver,

you often have a very big thick neck because you need strong

neck muscles to withstand the forces of going round those cold.

I know he is, yes.

But I just said I know he's a footballer, Mr.

Duncan, I'm talking about Formula One drivers who have to, you know,

they have to be able to resist the cornering forces

and they have very big, thick, powerful necks.

I think it's also people who do a lot of weight training as well because they develop their muscles.

And I think what happens eventually is their neck muscles also develop

and their neck becomes much wider than their head.

Mm hmm.

Yes, I might do that.

I wonder if you could do weight training on your head, sort of balance

some weights on your head, and then and then sort of do training like that?

Well, I think you could actually do sit ups like this.

Oh, this is what it is to do this.

You sit up and down and it puts it puts a lot of strain on it

because of course, your skin on the hair starts to sag as you get older.

So you need to do that.

Just keep that all firm.

I know that. Well, that's the worst part.

And again, the worst.

But the one thing I'm noticing as I'm getting older is my neck.

My neck is getting a little

loose.

So I'm hoping by losing weight, it will set everything back in.

It will

pull it all back in.

I hope that's a good exercise.

Going back and then doing that, you can feel

all your muscles tightening and the hair and making you, you know,

taut and muscular again, keeping everything everything nice and firm.

And here anyway, it is now 2:30 on a Wednesday.

We are looking at some neck idioms first and then we are going to look

at clowning around with Mr.

Steve and Mr. Duncan.

So first of all, we can save someone neck.

You can save a person's neck.

If you save someone's neck, you are getting someone out of a bad situation.

You are saving them from some sort of misfortune.

Could you think of an example?

Yeah, maybe.

Maybe you're having to give a presentation at work.

Is it Bill now?

And maybe you're giving a presentation at work and you.

Well, you get mixed up in your in your presentation

or you forget your words and then somebody comes in, helps you

in a subtle way.

You could say afterwards, Oh, thanks for saving my neck.

Because the, the,

the idea is that you were in a situation

that you really had to perform in

and thus if you didn't, you would have looked stupid.

And that's, you know, so if you're giving a talk or a speech,

obviously you if it goes wrong, you're going to look bad on it.

So somebody helps you out with that.

Well, maybe the boss asks you for a report

that needs to be in there by a certain time and you haven't got time to do it

and you give it to him and if you ask a friend or can you do this for me, I haven't got time to do it.

My boss needs it.

Then afterwards you say, Well, oh, thanks for doing that.

You really saved my neck.

So it it's got to be a situation that is quite,

you know, you've got to be performing it

and it's got to be a situation that has some peril if you don't complete the task.

Of course, it derives from the battlefield where

in the early days of battle and the early days of

I suppose you would have wars, battles

taking place, quite often people would use large,

sharp things such as axes and swords, and they would swing them around.

And quite often you would either get stabbed by the sword or they would chop your head off.

Quite often you would lose your head.

So if your friend in the battle helps you,

they will literally save your neck,

because that's the probably in battle that's going to be a very vulnerable.

If you want to kill somebody, go for the neck.

I would say so if you yeah, you probably

literally saved their life, save their neck.

So and using this in a situation like I described it, work, then

it's a situation where you could have lost your job if you hadn't done this report.

Yes. So it's normally a very serious outcome that that person is being saved from.

Yes, that's good.

So we'll get some more of the definitions.

You might stick your neck out

to stick one's neck out for someone.

So again, very similar, but the other way round.

So instead of you saving someone else,

you are actually doing the thing.

It's the action that you are doing that is saving someone else

so you can have your neck saved or you can stick your neck out for someone else.

So you risk yourself. Yeah.

For another person,

which is very similar, you are doing something

maybe courageous, maybe in battle.

Once again, I think this derives from the battlefield.

So if you stick your neck out, you are getting in the way of another person.

You are defending someone, you are risking

your self for another person.

And an example could be and this I've heard this used in this situation

that people will say that,

for example, at work you've got some meeting going on.

There's always a meeting. Always a meeting. Yes.

And or it could be sports.

And they want volunteers for something

to do something because somebody volunteer

to give a talk on something right now

will you give a talk on on English

in five minute talk?

We need somebody to do that.

In half an hour's time there's a meeting and the things need to be done.

And do you volunteer?

Do you stick your neck out to do that,

or are you the person that won't, you know, don't dare do anything that you do?

Frightened.

So in that sense, it's that person doing a brave thing?

Yes, doing a brave thing.

And you will often hear people say, oh, you know, if you're trying to this happened to us.

This happened to us a lot at work, we'd have to

we'd have to present back a group of would be in groups and you'd be

undertaking some task about how to increase your sales.

Okay.

And you were in groups of, say, five, several groups of five, but one person from each group

then has to feed back to everybody else about what they've discovered.

And you know it.

There's always somebody that never will volunteer for this.

And you might then say, Oh, Dave, how he never sticks his neck out for anyone.

So you can use that to say a particular person will never do that.

But you might say, All right, I'll it, I'll stick my neck out. Yes.

So you're you're making yourself vulnerable, aren't you. Yes.

So you stick your neck out for someone.

You risk yourself for another person. Here's another one.

Maybe there is a race taking place to be neck and neck,

maybe a contest, a competition

to be in equal position in a race.

So two people might be running.

Maybe two horses are in a race

and two of the horses at the front are exactly in the same position.

You might say that they are neck and neck

and that means that they are at the same position, they are level.

And I suppose you could say also if you were scoring something.

So maybe if two people are on the same amount of points,

you can say that those two people are now neck and neck.

Yes. It doesn't have to be a race.

I think that's where that comes from because obviously you have to cross the line.

And if P and it's the head, the head that goes over the line

first, isn't it, that wins nobody normally with a horse or a runner.

But if they're neck and neck, then that implies that they're very close

and you won't be able to tell until, you know, maybe you done a photo finish or something. But.

Yeah.

Yes. What were you saying just for that, Mr. Duncan?

Yes. It doesn't have to be literally a race.

It could be

points in something

in a competition, as you say, any anything, maybe in your workplace.

Maybe you have to have your sales figures have to be at a certain level,

or maybe you have to be at the top of your group.

And maybe two people have the same sales.

Maybe they've both achieved exactly the same amount of sales.

So you could say that they are neck and neck moving on.

You might put your neck on the block.

Very similar to what we talked about a few moments ago to stick your neck out for someone.

But in this situation, I think you are putting yourself

in actual danger.

You put your neck on the block, you are doing something.

But it might cause in fact,

it might well cause danger harm.

Or maybe in a relationship. You're feeling pressure.

You're feeling pressure from somebody who could be at work.

It could be in a relationship.

But you're feeling pressure.

I mean, there might be threat.

Your boss might be phoning you up and saying, you know, how are you getting over that project?

And then they phone up the next day.

How you know, when are you going to have it finished?

You know, this is simple. And you say

when you stop breathing my neck.

Hmm. Literally, it feels like they're pressurising you,

that they're that close to you, that annoying you.

So a person may be in a relationship.

We've all been in relationships where that other person that we're with

is constantly thinking about what we're doing.

Or maybe they're watching us.

So maybe they're looking at a phone or something like that,

and they're always breathing down your neck.

They they're to the to needy.

They always wanting your attention or they're worried you might be seeing other people.

Oh, and they might be keeping an eye on, you know, watching your family

have usually it's used in a way it's often used in a work situation.

To describe your boss or manager or somebody like that.

So breathing down my neck, someone let me get on with my work.

Someone is always nearby watching what you are doing.

And he says, Oh my gosh, you you've got a brass neck.

It means you've done something very daring

and you have shown a lot of confidence

and you are very self-assured of the thing you are pursuing

and might say you've got a brass neck, but I'm not going to give you a pay rise.

You're fired.

And then you might say, well, he's got an even tougher brass neck than me, and

you can use that very much.

But you do use it. Yeah.

We all know someone like this

in our lives, a person who is dead from the neck up.

many politicians perhaps might be described as this.

They are an idiot or a fool.

going to take me weeks of having to console that person.

This sounds like an experience.

If you had this experience, the suggestion is you

probably let it go, go on for too long before you've done something about it.

And that's the same with that.

You've let it build up to a point where it's now very difficult to get out of it.

It seems the relationship you may be should have done something earlier.

So it's a good

I suppose we are all capable sometimes of doing this.

We are all capable of not again, acting

silly, acting in a crazy way,

playing the fool, being foolish.

Or maybe if we are trying to do something serious

or in a serious way, but we don't do it very well,

which is what a lot of people use nowadays as well.

So let's have a quick look.

So we have about another 10 minutes and then we will be going.

First of all, and the sense that we are using it in today.

Now, I know it can be used as a noun to describe

that person, the person that looks like this, for example.

So there is Mr.

Steve dressed as a clown, blowing his big horn, and there is me over there

also acting like a clown.

But you can also use it as a verb as well.

You clown, you are playing the fool.

You are doing something in a foolish way so you might clown around.

We can say that that person is being very silly, very foolish,

you clown around, which also is a verb.

So the things that they are doing, they are doing it in a foolish way.

A silly way.

Yeah. Maybe you're a work and somebody is.

Moving things around on your desk all the time or,

or taking things away and hiding them

or, you know, spilling your drink or something.

Just acting like a fool.

You might say, Oh, stop clowning around.

Or they poking you or doing something

like that can happen at work.

It means you stop acting The fool. Yes.

So to clown around is to play games

in a boisterous, disruptive way.

A person is doing something and maybe they're doing it

just to make you happy or to to have fun.

But it can also be quite annoying when someone decides to clown around.

someone has their own profile on Twitter and they're called Clown World,

and they often highlight all the stupidity of human behaviour.

So a person who is a clown described as a clown

nowadays might be a person who has a lot of authority

or a very important job, but they don't do it very well.

Well, Boris Johnson was often described as a clown,

and so was.

So was Trump, of course.

Yes, but I mean, yeah, the archetypal

authoritarian figure

of recent times, I think you would describe Boris

Johnson would fit into that quite whether you agree with what he did or not.

But he did use to act a bit like a fool in public.

I think he used it as a sort of shield almost.

So a person who is a clown in in modern terms

might be a person who is just not very good at their job.
