I wanted to help you learn the English phrase

When you are asleep at the wheel,

it means you're not doing your job.

It comes from the idea that when you're driving a vehicle,

차를 운전할 때 운전대를 잡고 졸지

you should not fall asleep

말아야 한다는 생각에서 비롯됐다

while you're holding onto the steering wheel.

But we use it to describe anyone

그러나 우리는

who is not doing their job.

자신의 일을 하지 않는 사람을 설명할 때 사용합니다.

We say that they are asleep at the wheel.

우리는 그들이 운전대에서 자고 있다고 말합니다.

We actually use this a lot to talk about people

우리는 실제로 무언가를 담당하는 사람들에 대해 이야기할 때 이것을 많이 사용합니다

who are in charge of something.

Maybe someone at your work is in charge of a project,

직장에서 누군가가 프로젝트를 담당하고 있을 수 있지만

and they're not doing their job.

We would say that they are asleep at the wheel.

Certainly it's not something that you want to do.

You want to be alert.

You want to be doing your job at all times.

The other phrase I wanted to teach you today

I'm not sure if you knew

we had this word in English, asleep.

영어에 이 단어가 있다는 것을 알고 계셨는지 모르겠습니다.

When you sleep, it means you close your eyes,

잠을 잘 때는 눈을 감고

and you go to sleep.

잠이 든다는 뜻입니다.

But then we would say that you are asleep.

그러나 그때 우리는 당신이 자고 있다고 말할 것입니다.

Last night, I was asleep all night.

어젯밤, 나는 밤새 잠을 잤다.

It was a great night.

좋은 밤이었다.

When someone is sound asleep,

누군가가 깊이 잠들었다는 것은

it means that they are in a very, very deep sleep.

그들이 아주 아주 깊은 잠에 빠져 있다는 것을 의미합니다.

Sometimes when we go driving,

가끔 우리가 운전을 하다가 장거리 여행을 가면

our children, our younger children,

will fall asleep if we go on a long trip.

And when we get to the place where we are going,

they will be sound asleep.

We'll say their names,

and that won't even wake them up.

So when you are sound asleep
