Meaning of NO CAN DO and SURE THING - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So I was sitting on my computer

그래서 저는

trying to think of an English phrase to teach you today,

오늘 여러분에게 가르쳐 줄 영어 표현을 생각하려고 컴퓨터에 앉아 있었고

and my daughter was watching cartoons,

제 딸이 만화를 보고 있었는데 만화

and one of the characters in the cartoon said, "No can do."

속 인물 중 한 명이 "No can do"라고 말했습니다.

In English if you say no can do, it's not proper English.

영어로 no can do라고 하면 제대로 된 영어가 아닙니다.

It's actually very informal English.

실제로 매우 비공식적인 영어입니다.

In fact, it's a phrase that kind of makes fun

사실

of people who don't speak English well.

영어를 잘 못하는 사람들을 놀리는 표현입니다.

So it's not a nice phrase to use,

따라서 사용하기 좋은 표현은 아니지만

but you might hear it sometimes.

가끔 들을 수 있습니다.

If someone says, "No can do,"

누군가가 "No can do"라고 말한다면

it means that they can't do something.

그것은 그들이 무언가를 할 수 없다는 뜻입니다.

You might ask someone

누군가에게

if they can give you a ride to work the next day,

다음 날 직장까지 태워다 줄 수 있는지 물어보면

and they might respond by saying, "No can do.

"안 됩니다.

"I have an appointment in the morning.

"라고 대답할 수 있습니다. 아침에 약속이 있습니다.

"I will not be able to give you a ride to work."

"나는 당신을 직장까지 태워줄 수 없습니다."

Or you might ask a friend if they could

또는 친구에게

come over for dinner on a certain night of the week,

주중 특정 밤에 저녁 식사를 하러 와도 되는지 물어보면 친구는

and they might reply by saying, "No can do.

"안 돼요.

"I already have other things on the go that day."

"그날 이미 다른 일이 있어서요."

So again, no can do is an informal slang phrase

라고 대답할 수 있습니다. can do는 비격식적인 속어

and it's a little bit rude to say it,

이고 약간 무례하지만 들을

but you might hear it,

and it means that you can't do something.

수 있는데,

The opposite, of course, is a very nice phrase

그 반대는 물론 아주 좋은 표현이고

and doesn't make fun of anybody,

누구에게나 재미있을 것입니다.

and that's to say, "Sure thing."

"물론입니다."라고 말하는 것입니다.

So this would be the opposite of no can do.

따라서 이것은 할 수 없음의 반대가 될 것입니다.

If someone said to me,

누군가 나에게

"Can I get a ride to work with you tomorrow?"

" 내일 당신과 함께 일할 차를 태워줄 수 있을까요?"라고

I could say, "Sure thing.

묻는다면 저는 "물론이죠. 물건.

"You can totally get a ride to work with me tomorrow."

" 내일까지 차를 타고 일하러 갈 수 있습니다." 그건

I think that sometimes when you are learning English,

it's good to learn something more than once

so that you can remember it.

So again, if someone says, "No can do,"

다시 말하지만 누군가가 "No can do"라고 말하면

it means that they can't do something,

무언가를 할 수 없다는 뜻

and if someone says, "Sure thing,"

이고 누군가 "물론이죠"라고 말하면

it means that they can do something.

무언가를 할 수 있다는 뜻입니다.

So if you were to say to me, "Hey, Bob the Canadian,

그래서 만약 당신이 저에게 "이봐, 캐나다인 밥,

"can you make another video next week?"

"다음 주에 또 다른 비디오를 만들 수 있니?

I would say, "Sure thing, I will make another video

"to help you learn English."
