Learn the English Phrases THE GRAND TOUR and TOURIST TRAP

In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn

the English phrase, the grand tour.

This is something we say kind of jokingly.

I think it's we just say for fun

when we are showing someone our house for the first time.

If my sister bought a new house and I went over to visit her

and I had never seen her house before,

I might say, "Hey, can you give me the grand tour?"

Basically, what I'm asking for her to do

is to show me all of the rooms

in the new house that she bought.

If someone came over to my house

and if they had never visited me before, I could say,

"Hey, why don't you come on in

and I'll give you the grand tour."

So when you tell someone

you're going to give them the grand tour,

it just means you're going to show them

everything in your house, all of the rooms,

and all of the things that are in your house.

So that would be the grand tour.

The second phrase I wanted to help you learn today

is the phrase tourist trap.

I wanted to teach you this phrase

because I actually went to Niagara Falls today

and I made an English lesson there.

It'll be up on my other channel tomorrow.

But a tourist trap is an area that's designed

to try and get tourists to spend their money.

When you go to Niagara Falls,

there are many stores that are tourist traps.

They have lots of big signs and they're very colorful

and they try to lure tourists in

so that the tourists will spend their money.

So you can describe things in a touristy area as tourist traps,

if they're designed to try and get tourists

to spend their money.

So to review, the grand tour

is simply showing someone your house.

You can give them the grand tour.

And a tourist trap is an area in a touristy part of a city

that's designed to try and get tourists

to spend their money.

If you ever go to Niagara Falls,

there are a lot of tourist traps there.

But let's look at a comment from another video.

This comment is from the video about the phrase jump ship,

which means to leave your place of work

or to leave an organization.

Now, the comment is from Silent Night.

Silent Night says,

"I'm going to jump ship from my current job."

And then my response is, "I wish you all the best."

That's a very common response in English.

If someone says that they are going to leave their job,

or if they're going to make a change in their life,

you'll often say, "Hey, I wish you all the best."

So that was my response.

Natalia also had a response.

Natalia said, "I did jump ship last month.

This was my best decision in the last five years."

And my response to that was, "I'm glad for you, Natalia."

So Natalia did jump ship.

Natalia did leave her job and did start a new job.

I think she's talking about her job

and she now has probably a better job

or is in a better place,

and she's saying it was the best decision

that she has made in the last five years.

So very cool for you, Natalia. I'm glad for you.

So thanks for the comment, Silent Night.

I hope that if you are planning to jump ship

from your current job,

I hope it goes well.

I do wish you all the best.

I think sometimes change in life is good.

It's good, sometimes,

when something isn't exactly what you want

and if you have an opportunity to change,

you should do that.

I was able to go to Niagara Falls today.

I went to Niagara Falls this morning.

I took my camera with.

I made an entire English lesson about travel and tourism

while I was in Niagara Falls,

and that video, I'm almost done editing right now.

I'll probably forget,

but tomorrow morning at three a.m. Eastern Standard Time,

"Learn English Vocabulary About Travel and Tourism

It was beautiful. It was a beautiful, sunny day.

I got the video made before rain came.
