Meaning of SPITTING IMAGE - A Really Short English Lesson with Subtitles

In English if we say someone is the spitting image of someone else it means that we think

they look a lot alike.

It means that we think they almost look like twins.

We often use this phrase to describe a son who looks a lot like their father.

You could say, "Joe, you are the spitting image of your dad!"

And that would mean that we think that Joe looks a lot like his dad.

We also use this to describe a daughter who looks a lot like their mom.

You could say, "Jane, you are the spitting image of your mom!"

So notice we usually use this phrase when we're talking about people's relatives.

Usually we are talking about fathers and sons, mothers and daughters...

Sometimes we use it to describe brothers.

People have said to me, before, that they think I am the spitting image of my younger

brother, which doesn't make a lot of sense, cause, technically he should be the spitting

image of me because I'm older!

We have another phrase that refers to the people whose behaviours are similar to their

parents.

So for instance you could say, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.", when you

are talking about some of my behaviours.

I have behaviours that are very similar to the behaviours that my dad had.

I like things tidy.

I like things organized, and I like everything just so.

So someone could describe me by saying, "Wow!

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.", and that would mean that they think I have

a lot of the same behaviours that my dad had.
