Meaning of TURN OF EVENTS and TOPSY-TURVY - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So we've had an interesting turn of events here

in Canada, at least in the part of Canada where I live.

If you can see behind me, it's starting to snow again.

I thought it was starting to feel a little more like spring,

but we've had an unexpected turn of events,

and it's starting to snow.

In English, when you say that you have a turn of events,

it usually means that things have changed

and now are going in a different direction.

They're going in a direction

you didn't expect them to go.

So, I thought that spring was right around the corner,

but we have had an interesting turn of events,

a surprising turn of events, an unexpected turn of events.

And now, it seems like winter is back for a little bit.

In fact, we're expecting a huge snowstorm tonight,

we're going to get 15 centimeters of snow tonight,

and there's also a chance that, a small chance,

that I might not have to go to work tomorrow.

We might have a snow day.

So, an unexpected turn of events, winter is back.

In fact, if I was to describe this winter,

I would say that this winter has been topsy-turvy.

This is kind of an older English phrase, or word.

When you say something is topsy-turvy,

it means that it's kind of like upside down and backwards

and the opposite of what you expected.

This winter has been very topsy-turvy,

sometimes there has been days on end where we've had

no snow, sometimes we've had lots of snow,

and then it melts, and then a few days later,

it snows again.

So this winter has been very topsy-turvy.

It's been a little bit upside down

and a little bit backwards at times.

Anyways, when you have a turn of events,

it means things start to go a different direction,

they start to go in a direction you weren't expecting.

And when things are topsy-turvy,

they're kinda upside down and backwards

and just generally weird.

I guess you could say, this has been kind of a weird winter.
