Learn the English Phrases AS GOOD AS NEW and BRAND NEW - An English Lesson with Subtitles

So I always buy used vehicles.

I have never bought a new vehicle

because I find that if you take your time

and if you spend a lot of time looking and researching

and trying to find a good used vehicle,

it is as good as new.

If you buy a vehicle that has very, very few kilometers

on it, if you buy a vehicle that has very little rust

or no rust, and if you buy a vehicle that was taken care of

by the previous owner, it's as good as new.

So the English phrase, "As good as new,"

means exactly what it sounds like.

It's when you buy something that is used

but it's in such good shape, it's in such good condition,

that it is as good as new.

So I do this with vehicles, I don't do this with computers.

I usually buy my computers new

and I buy my vehicles used because used vehicles,

for me, are as good as new.

So this question came up once in one of my English lessons,

"Why do we have the phrase, 'Brand new,' in English?"

So I can say, I always buy my computers brand new.

I like to buy a brand new computer every couple of years.

And why don't we just say, "New?"

Well, it's because something's new, it's new for awhile.

So when I buy a computer, for about a month or two

after I buy it, I tell my brother or I tell my sister

that I bought a new computer.

But if you buy a new shirt,

and it's the first time you are wearing that shirt

and someone says, "Hey, is that a new shirt?"

You could say, "Yeah, it's brand new."

And it kinda means like it's the very first time

that you're wearing it.

It doesn't have to mean that,

but certainly brand new means that you bought something new

and you bought it fairly recently.

So I don't buy a lot of things, like clothing, very often

but when I do I'm always happy

to have something that's brand new.
