Meaning of LIFE OF THE PARTY and LATE TO THE PARTY - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

If someone says that you are the life of the party

in English, it means that you are

a really fun person to be around.

You probably have a friend

or someone in your family who is the life of the party.

That means that whenever you get together,

even if it's not an actual party,

whenever you get together,

they are funny, they help the conversation

to keep going, they are the life of the party.

Maybe your brother-in-law is like this,

maybe your cousin is like this.

When you go out for dinner,

when you go out and do things,

or when you have an actual party,

they are the ones that just make

everyone have a good time.

So when you say that someone is the life of the party,

it doesn't mean that they're there to try

and get everyone's attention,

it doesn't mean that they are arrogant.

It means that they have a personality

that makes them super fun.

Some people think that I am kinda that type of person,

but I'm not, actually.

If you ever met me at a party,

I'm pretty boring.

Anyways, we also have a phrase in English

called late to the party.

When you are late to the party,

it can mean that you are late to an actual party,

but it could also mean that you are

one of the last people to start doing something.

A good example of this would be

years ago, I created a Facebook account

and then about a year later,

some of my friends created a Facebook account.

You would say that they were late to the party.

For a whole year, I was using Facebook

before they were and kind of enjoying using it

and sharing pictures and connecting with old friends,

and when they eventually joined Facebook,

they were a little bit late to the party.

So again, it wasn't an actual party,

but we use this phrase in English

to describe when people start using something

or start doing something later than most other people.

So hopefully, you are the life of the party

and hopefully, you're never late to the party.
