Meaning of THIS SUCKS and THAT SUCKS - A Really Short English Lesson with Subtitles

- So I really like being at home, okay.

I really like being at home,

but when you have to stay home,

when you must stay home,

eventually it gets a lot less enjoyable.

This sucks.

When we say this sucks in English,

it means that the situation we are in isn't any fun.

This is an informal phrase.

It's a little bit like a slang phrase,

and it simply means that you don't like

the situation that you are in.

You will hear this phrase a lot

if you watch English television and English movies

when the character is in a situation

that they don't enjoy where things are going wrong.

They will say to someone else on the show, "This sucks.

"I wish that things were going better."

Maybe you are driving in your car

and all the sudden it starts to wiggle,

and you're not sure what's wrong,

and you get out of your car,

and you notice that the tire is flat.

You can stand there on the side

of the road and say, "This sucks!"

Meaning that this is not a nice thing.

And if you are talking about something

that is not nice for someone else,

you can say, that sucks.

Maybe your friend says to you

that they have recently lost their job.

You could say to them, that sucks.

I feel really bad for you.

Maybe you have a friend who lost their wallet,

maybe you went shopping with them,

and they lost their wallet while you were out.

You could say to them, that sucks.

Basically, what you're saying is I feel really bad for you.

The situation that you are in is not very enjoyable.

I feel bad for you, that sucks.

So if something in your life isn't going well,

you can say this sucks,

and if something in someone else's life isn't going well,

you can say that sucks.
