Meaning of WORK YOUR WAY UP and PASSED OVER - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

When you have a job,

you're either happy with the position you have

or you are eager to work your way up.

When you try to work your way up

at a company or at a business,

it means that you start as a worker

and you want to move up to the next level

so that you can be in charge of people.

Maybe you want to work your way up to being a supervisor.

Maybe you want to work your way up to being a manager.

But you are either content or happy with the job you have

or you are someone who is motivated

to work your way up.

I'm content with the job I have.

I have no desire to work my way up.

At home here, doing my YouTube channel, I'm my own boss.

At home here, working on the farm, Jen is my boss

and at my real job as a teacher,

I am content to just be a teacher.

I don't need to work my way up.

If you do want to work your way up though,

you are always looking to get a promotion.

A promotion is when your boss or your supervisor says,

"We are going to give you a job

"where you are going to be in charge of people

"or in charge of projects."

But if you don't get the job,

if you don't get the promotion,

we say that you have been passed over.

So you might say that you have been trying at work

to get a promotion but you keep getting passed over.

That means that you just never get

the promotion that you want.

So again, when you want to work your way up at work,

it means that you want to become a manager

or you want to be in charge of people or projects.

And when you get passed over, it's a sad day

because it means you did not get that position.
