Meaning of TO DO A DOUBLE TAKE and MY JAW DROPPED - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So in English when you do a double take,

it usually means that you look at someone

and you notice them,

and then you look again, you look a second time,

because something is different about them.

Maybe your cousin comes over

and maybe your cousin normally wears really old clothes

with lots of holes in them,

and you're always wishing that they would

just wear a little something nicer,

and then one day, your cousin comes over,

and he or she is wearing brand new clothes.

They have gone out and gotten a new outfit.

You would probably look at them

and then you would look again out of surprise.

You would do a double take.

So when you do a double take,

it means you look at someone for a second time.

Maybe someone you know got a really, really cool haircut.

Maybe they normally have just a normal haircut,

but they suddenly have shaved their head

really short, like me.

You might do a double take.

You might look once and not really notice,

and then suddenly look again and notice their new haircut.

Another expression of surprise that we use in English

is to say my jaw dropped.

So maybe someone you know bought a brand new car,

and the next time you see them, your jaw drops.

When your jaw, this is your jaw, drops, you're like.

So you can see on my face I had an expression

that showed surprise.

If someone drove in my driveway right now

who normally drives a really old car

and they were driving a brand new sports car,

I would probably be surprised and my jaw would drop.

I would probably go,

and I would certainly be surprised.
