Meaning of DOESN'T HOLD WATER and FISH OUT OF WATER - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So in English if we say that an argument

or a statement doesn't hold water,

it means that we think it doesn't make sense,

or that it's unreasonable.

Let's say someone says to you,

"You know, it's April so you should be able

"to go outside just wearing a t-shirt

"because it's supposed to be warm in April."

You could say, "That theory doesn't hold water.

"You need to check the temperature

"before you go outside because as you can see,

"sometimes in April you still need to wear

"your winter coat outside."

So in English, when we say that something

doesn't hold water, it means that it doesn't make sense

or it means that we don't think it is logical

or it means that we don't see it being true

without a little bit of research.

So it is definitely cold out here

and so if you said to me, "Ah, just go outside in a t-shirt,

"it's supposed to be warm in April."

I would say, "Your argument doesn't hold water

"because it's definitely cold out here."

The other phrase I wanted to look at today

is the phrase, "A fish out of water."

In English, if you say that you feel like

a fish out of water, it means that you

don't feel comfortable with what you are doing.

If I needed to fix my van, if I needed to repair the engine,

I would feel like a fish out of water

because I have some mechanical skills,

but not enough to fix the engine in my van.

It's much better off if I take it to the garage

where a mechanic can fix it

because when I try to fix something mechanical

I feel like a fish out of water.

So again, if something doesn't hold water,

it means it doesn't make sense.

And if you feel like a fish out of water,

it means that you feel awkward or inadequate

in the situation you are in.
