Meaning of HINDSIGHT IS 20/20 and THERE'S NO GOING BACK - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So in English we have this saying

that hindsight is 20/20.

Now, hindsight is not a common English word,

but this phrase is common.

Hindsight means looking at things

that have happened in the past.

The numbers 20/20 come from when we talk about eyesight.

If you have 20/20 vision,

it means that your eyesight is perfect.

It means that you don't need glasses.

So when we say that hindsight is 20/20,

what it means is that, when you look at things

you did in the past from where you are now in the present,

it's easy to decide what was bad

and what was good in the past.

So when we say hindsight is 20/20,

we are talking about things in the past

and how we now know what was a good decision

and what was bad.

If you buy a car that breaks all the time,

after a couple of years, you know it was a bad decision

but hindsight is 20/20.

There's another phrase we use in English,

there's no going back,

and this basically means something similar.

You can't go back and change a bad decision in the past.

So sometimes in the example, again, of buying a car

that needs lots of repairs, there's no going back.

You can't go back in time.

You can't travel through time

and undo the fact that you just bought the car

and that it ended up costing you a lot of money

because it needed a lot of repairs.

Anyways, hindsight is 20/20 means that

when you look at the past from where you are now,

it's easy to think that some things were bad decisions

and there's no going back just means that

you can't really undo something that's been done.
