Two Meanings of COME ON - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So in English, when you say come on,

it means that you want people to hurry up

or that you want them to get going

or you want them to go faster.

Sometimes when we are getting in the van,

and I am in a hurry to go somewhere,

you will hear me say things like, come on, kids, hurry up!

Let's go.

Or, come on, kids, let's go.

I want to leave.

I don't want to be late.

So when you say come on to someone in English,

one of the things it means

is that you want them to hurry up.

Maybe you are picking your brother up,

and you drive to his house,

and you are sitting in your car in his driveway,

but he's not coming out of his house.

You could get on your phone,

and you could phone your brother,

and you could say, come on, man.

I wanna get going.

Let's hurry up, let's go.

And basically what you are saying to him

is that you want him to hurry up.

So when you say come on, let's go,

or come on, hurry up, or come on, let's get going,

those are all phrases that you would use in English

when you want someone to hurry up.

And I'm going to flip this now,

and I'm going to teach you the phrase come on,

which is the same phrase.

It's on both sides.

But we also use the phrase come on when we are frustrated.

So let's say I get in my van, and I turn the key,

and the battery is dead.

You would hear me say something like

ah, come on, you gotta be kidding me.

Basically, I'm expressing my frustration

by saying come on.

Earlier when I came out, this was blowing like crazy,

and I actually said this phase.

I was like, ah, come on!

So when you are frustrated,

sometimes you use the English phrase come on.

And it sounds just like that.

I literally said, come on!

So basically, I was frustrated

because the wind was blowing so hard.

So, when you say come on,

it can mean you want people to hurry up,

and if you say come, come on.

(laughs) If you say come on,

it can mean that you are frustrated.
