Meaning of IN HOT WATER and HOTHEAD - A Really Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So in English, if you're in hot water,

it means that you're in trouble.

Sometimes people get in hot water

when they do things without telling other people.

So maybe you have a girlfriend,

and maybe you went out with another girl,

and when your girlfriend found out,

you would be in hot water.

By the way, you shouldn't ever do that.

If you have a girlfriend,

you shouldn't be going out with other girls.

So that would mean that you are in trouble

with your girlfriend.

It would mean that your girlfriend is mad at you.

Sometimes politicians get in hot water.

Politicians get in trouble when they lie

or when they make promises

and then they don't keep their promises.

So you could say

that the politician promised to build a new bridge,

but because they couldn't afford it,

he's now in hot water because he broke his promise.

So if you're in hot water, you're in trouble.

Hey, this is a little different

than to be a hothead. (laughs)

A hothead is someone who gets angry really, really easily.

In fact, we would say that that person is hotheaded

or that that person is a hothead.

Sometimes I can be a little bit of a hothead.

I get angry.

You wouldn't probably believe this,

but I can get angry really quickly sometimes,

and so I can sometimes be known as a bit of a hothead

or as a hotheaded person.

So I hope you're not.
