Learn the English Phrases IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, TRY, TRY AGAIN and FIRST THINGS FIRST

In this English lesson,

I wanted to help you learn the English phrase.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

It's a bit of a long one, isn't it?

We actually sometimes just say the beginning of this phrase,

we say, if at first you don't succeed,

and then people might respond by saying, try, try again.

And it's a phrase we use to talk about how in life,

sometimes you just need to try to do something

more than once before you have success.

You might have this with learning English,

maybe your first English conversation didn't go very well.

But the secret to success when learning a language is,

if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

We also had this on our farm

with some of the things that we grow.

We've tried to grow certain things in the past,

and maybe the fertility in the soil wasn't right.

Or maybe that certain type of plant

got too much water, or not enough water.

And our motto has always been,

if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

I, as a teacher, would insert in there,

if at first you don't succeed,

do some research, and then try, try again.

The second phrase I wanted to teach you today

is the phrase first things first.

This is a bit of a repeat.

For those of you that have been around

for more than two years,

I did teach this phrase a couple of years ago.

It means when you're going to do something,

there are a number of things you probably have to do.

Do the most important things first.

A good example of this would be

if you're going on a trip, first things first,

you should make sure the car has gas in it.

You should make sure the car has had a recent oil change.

You should make sure that if it's winter,

you have snow tires on your car.

First things first means

that you do the most important things first.

Once all that's done,

then you pack your things in the car,

and you get in the car, and you start driving.

But first things first,

you might want to make sure the car is ready to go.

So to review, if at first you don't succeed,

try, try again is a funny little phrase we say,

and we do say this.

I think my mom just said it the other day.

It just means that when you try something,

it doesn't always go well the first time.

So you should make sure you don't quit.

You should make sure you try again.

And when we say first things first,

it simply means that if you're doing something,

and there are five things to do,

do the most important one or two things first.

But, hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video.

This comment is from Cherong,

and the comment is my English learning goals

for this week are to watch at least one short video

in English, and write a short comment on it every day.

I hope to be able to make it.

My response was make it happen, you can do it.

I used to watch a show called Star Trek,

and Jean-Luc Picard was the captain,

and he would say make it so,

and that basically means do it, get it done.

You can do it.

Hey, I want it to talk a little bit more

about some of the crops on our farm.

The other day, I think it was on my member's only video,

Mohd Ags noticed that the pumpkins are doing well.

Let me spin you around.

Hold on, you're gonna go for a bit of a ride,

and I'll give you a view.

These are smaller pumpkins than what you might be used to.

And we actually use these pumpkins.

We cut them open, and we put little flower bouquets in them.

It's kind of fun.

I think I'm clicking the wrong thing here now.

You're gonna go for a ride again, there I am.

So those are doing well.

They grow really well.

I should say though, 20 years ago,

when we started growing pumpkins,

we didn't have enough fertilizer in the soil.

Pumpkin's really, really like a lot of composted manure,

and a lot of fertilizer.

So now we make sure that we always put lots there.

So these are kind of fun.

In a few weeks, when we do start making bouquets,

and putting them in the pumpkins,

I'll make sure I show you a few pictures,

or put them in a video.

They're really cute.
