Meaning of HAT HEAD and MESSED UP HAIR - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

- So we have this funny phrase in English, hat head.

Hat head is what happens to your hair

when you wear a hat for a long time.

So you can see that I'm wearing a hat,

and my hair is getting a little bit long,

so sometimes, when I wear a hat, when I take it off,

my hair looks funny because I have hat head.

So again, wearing a hat doesn't mean you have hat head,

but when you take your hat off,

if your hair is kind of flattened,

or your hair is sticking up a little bit,

we say that you have hat head.

And we have another related phrase,

but I don't have a helmet to show you.

When I had a motorcycle,

sometimes when I took my helmet off, I had helmet head,

which means that the helmet flattened my hair

and made it look funny,

and that's why I cut my hair really short now,

because when I had a motorcycle, I cut my hair short

and I liked it so much that I just kept on doing it.

And then, how do you describe your hair

if it just doesn't look the way you like to have it?

We just say it's messed up.

Sometimes, you comb your hair or you brush your hair

to look a certain way,

and then, when you walk outside, it's really, really windy,

and then your hair gets messed up.

That's how we describe

when your hair doesn't look the way you want it to

because the wind has messed it up,

or maybe somebody came along

and they kind of messed your hair up.

That's not a very nice thing to do,

but perhaps your hair got messed up by the wind.

Perhaps it got messed up by someone else.

So again, hat head is when your hair is flattened

or looks funny after you take off a hat,

so when you wear a hat for a long time,

it gives you hat head.

When you take it off, your hair looks funny.

And when your hair gets blown around by the wind

or when someone actually touches it,

sometimes your hair is messed up.
